Issue 18 18 September 2017
Welcome to the end of term where a busy and fun filled ten weeks have been
had at McAuley College and it’s hard to even start to try and recall all of what
has been achieved and celebrated.
Today, we finished the term on a wonderful note… enjoying our inaugural
Mercy Day.
What is Mercy Day?
As I explained to the kids in simple terms… McAuley College is named after
Catherine McAuley, and Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy and
so our College embraces a Mercy charism which we celebrate every day, but
in particular on our Mercy Day!
Mercy Day is on the last day of Term 3 because it is close to The Feast of Our
Lady of Mercy held on the 24 September. In 1824, over 180 years ago, the
seed was planted through the opening of the House of Mercy by Catherine
McAuley in Dublin, Ireland. At this time, Catherine McAuley placed her work
under the care and protection of Our Lady of Mercy… and it continues today.
And in 2017, for the first time, McAuley College celebrates our first Mercy Day
where we reflect on the story of ‘our founders’ and look to our future as we
continue to write the remarkable story of McAuley College in the likeness of
Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy. We acknowledge the hard work,
commitment and devotion of the Sisters of Mercy and people of Mercy whose
work has made a positive difference in the lives of so many people.
Each day, as the staff, students and parents walk along Baggott Street; the
students work hard in their classes in the Ellen Whitty Block; and our staff
collaborate and plan in the Catherine McAuley Administration Centre, we
recall why these names have been chosen, and we reflect each day, when we
put our boots on, how our words, actions and thoughts, bring Mercy to those
around us.

Change of Date for Opening and Blessing
Please note that our Opening and Blessing date has changed. This was originally planned for Friday 6 October
but due to the Archbishop being called to Rome we have had to reschedule.
It will now be held on Friday 17 November. The time is unchanged and we hope to see you there.
Special Achievements
We would like to showcase the special achievements of our students, staff and community members in
our newsletter. This is not just isolated to what happens at school and encourage parents and students to
contact us with any news to celebrate… a Sporting Team victory, passing another grade in an AMEB exam,
achieving the next belt in Karate… and the list goes on.

Celebrating Mercy Day
What a great way to finish the term—Mass, food, tons of fun … mouse trap races, sack races, three legged
races, limbo, ball games—what a day!
We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Mercy Day. A day to celebrate Catherine McAuley and all the good things
she stands for. A day to celebrate US!
