Farewell to Geoff LambI am sad to report that one of our long standing MBC Newsletter distributors died in May.

Geoff Lamb had delivered the MBC news to residents in the Golf Road, Golfview Road, Marchbank Road, Station Road area of Bieldside for many years. He was a great contributor to the community and his presence will be missed.

On a happier note, I am pleased to say we had several new volunteers helping to deliver the last edition so my thanks to them and all of you out there who help to make sure the community receives the newsletter.

If you read this and are interested in delivering the MBC news, it is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air.

If you would like to help out please contact Peter Roberts on Aberdeen 868524.

The deadline for the next edition is:

EditorialEnjoying the ‘summer’? Anyone? We seem to be in a new world of ‘perpetual autumn’ without much of the at-tendant ‘fruitfulness’, I’m afraid. I gather that like mine, no-one’s garden is doing anything his year. Whether this is really ‘climate change’ seems to be a matter of debate, but if they have now found ‘Higgs Bosun’ (which I actually doubt, because they are saying that they are 99.999999% sure, just like the ‘new’ higher speed of light), surely they can fix the weather in Scotland to be drier and brighter?

Well it may have rained all over the Jubilee celebrations and spoiled a few street parties, but at least it did not rain when the Olympic torch came to the MBC area. I was not alone in being moved by the community spirit engendered by this relatively modest event. The photo, supplied by Barbara Cresswell, shows the flame’s passage through the packed streets of Bieldside. The whole country has em-braced the Olympic torch’s trek round the British Isles and we all seem to be very proud to be part of it. Mr Cameron also thinks it will make the country some money…we’ll see…

We have what can only be described as a bumper issue for you this time with information about new markets, local government websites, MBC News production and updates from our regular contributors. You will also find notices about the forthcoming MBC festival, local people doing well and winning prizes, and a tremendous response to the Dear Green Space which wrote to us in the last MBC News. In addition, our local counsellors who were re-elected have contributed their thoughts on issues of interest to our readers, especially the impact of the proposed housing developments, and the new counsellor Mr Malik has taken the opportunity to introduce himself to our readers.

CANCER, DON’T GET SCARED, GET CHECKED.

If you’re worried about cancer, the best person to speak to is your doctor. It could be nothing, but it’s better to be safe than sorry and, outcomes are much better these days. In fact, twice as many people survive cancer compared to 30 years ago.

Whatever you do, don’t worry that you might be wasting your doctor’s time. They want to see you. All you have to do is make an appointment.

A FEW SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR.

• A new lump which appears or gets bigger, in the breasts, testicles or anywhere else.• A sore that doesn’t heal up – in the mouth, throat or skin• A mole that changes shape, size or colour• Any growth that appears on the skin and continues to grow• Coughing up blood, or blood in the urine or mixed through stools• Things that refuse to clear up, like a cough that never goes away, or a pain somewhere that won’t settle• A change in pattern of going to the toilet • Unexpected weight loss (that’s not because you’ve been on a diet)

Please remember that these symptoms don’t necessarily mean you’ve got cancer. But they could indicate that something else is wrong. So, it’s still important that you talk to your doctor anyway.

Don’t just rely on screening, although it is important; you should still check yourself regularly and keep an eye out for any of the above changes in your body.

For more information on signs or symptoms and signposting to local cancer support organisations contact your local NHS Grampian healthpoint, call the free healthline on 0500 20 20 30 or log into nhsinform.co.uk

Firstly I would like to welcome two new members of staff to our reception team, Shirley Morrison and Julie Mcpherson who both joined us last month.

Our Breast Screening Programme will start around 14th September. Please do attend your appointment when you receive a letter. Trials demonstrate that deaths from breast cancer can be significantly reduced by participation in regular routine mammographic screening programmes for women aged 50-70 years.

Many thanks go to the family of a patient who sadly passed away recently who donated money to Cults Medical Group. We will be purchasing a pulse oximeter which is used for measuring oxygen in the blood.

The Scottish Ambulance Service has opened a new direct patient telephone booking line and is now asking patients to book their own ambulance when attending appointments at the hospital. The telephone number for this is 0300 123 126 and all calls will be charged at local rates both from mobiles and landlines.

PINs PortalA Public Information Notices (PINs) portal has been developed on behalf of Scottish councils (and funded by the Scottish Government) to allow public notices from across the country to be published on a single website for the first time. The portal allows each council to pub-lish their Planning, Licensing and Traf-fic notices in one location without cost, thus reducing newspaper advertising costs and aiding councils to make effi-ciencies in the time and effort involved in the administration of public notices. Eighteen councils are already taking advantage of the ‘tellmescotland por-tal’. Aberdeen City Council is currently uploading its Licensing notices to the portal and expects to begin upload-ing Planning and Traffic notices in the near future. The aim is to provide improved ac-cessibility for all, to statutory and non-statutory information. Registra-tion is free for public users, allowing anyone to access live and archive information. As it is countrywide, live traffic information will give users a cohesive national picture of any pro-posed journey with interactive maps highlighting road closures and problem areas. Public information notices from other Scottish regions will be easily accessed and users can opt to receive real-time SMS and e-mail alerts. It is hoped these improvements will lead to greater engagement and a higher level of response to public notices. The priority for the PINs portal is to ensure that the public can access information in the most effective way possible and to ensure that councils and taxpayers get the best value for money. Now that the portal is up and run-ning the Improvement Service wants to raise awareness and promote it to communities within the councils that are currently uploading their notices. It is thought that Community Coun-cils would be of great help with this, through displaying marketing material in the buildings in which they meet, posting articles on their Facebook pag-es or websites and generally spreading the word. The portal should be a use-ful tool for Community Councils and as it is continually being developed, Com-munity Councils are encouraged to give feedback or offer any comments on its further improvement. Community Councils wishing to receive any marketing material (posters, book-marks, stickers, business cards), text for articles, or any further information should contact Joanna Anderson, e-mail: [email protected]; tel: 01506 775575

The portal can be accessed at www.tellmescotland.gov.uk

News from the Cults Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council

In October 2012 we will be having the Community Council elec-tions. There are 18 places on the Cults, Bieldside and Milltimber Community Council. Nomination forms will be available from the City Council in late August but if you would like to put something back into the community, why not come along to our next com-munity council meeting on Thursday 23rd August at 7pm at Cults Academy? We meet every 4th Thursday in the month except in July and December. It is an opportunity to see what we do and if you are interested in joining, you can pick up a nomination form from our Secretary Guus Glass.

Major Housing DevelopmentsThere is very little progress to report from the previous MBC News article on the proposed housing developments at Friarsfield and Oldfold Farm. A detailed planning application for the first phase of the 285 housing development at Friarsfield involving 81 houses has been submitted. As far as we are aware the school-ing issues remain unresolved as the City Council has only just begun a school estates review. The legal challenge on the AWPR will be heard in the UK Supreme Court in July with a judgement expected before the end of the year. Even if the legal challenge fails, the procurement exercise will take 12 months and the construction of the road will require at least three summers. The earliest the AWPR will be completed is 2017.

On Oldfold Farm the planning permission in principle has been approved by Aberdeen City Council for the initial 400 homes with an additional 150 to come later. No planning application has been submitted by CALA. We understand that CALA have been carrying out a number of technical and environmental surveys and investigations. They anticipate that any amendments and improvements to their plans can be made in the next month leading to a planning application and supporting information ready to lodge with the Council in August 2012. As previously agreed with the community council and other community groups CALA will meet with us to discuss their planning application prior to its formal submission.

In June the Countesswells Consortium consisting of Stewart Milne Group, Heron Property and IDJ Properties launched their proposals for the development of Countesswells. The Aberdeen Local Development Plan identifies an opportunity for the pro-vision of 3,000 homes and 10 hectares of employment land, including community and commercial facilities, extending over 165 hectares. The consortium arranged a series of community engagement events in June at the Hilton Treetops, the Fourmile House and Cults Academy.

A total of 244 people attended the events. At this stage in the consultation process there is an outline of the size of the site and the consortium’s objectives but very little about how it would be developed. As anticipated by the relevant community coun-cils the major concerns of those attending focussed on traffic and transport problems, the road network and the provision of schooling. It is recognised that the scale of this development will require 2-3 new primary schools and a secondary school. It will require significant investment in the local road network and the completion of the AWPR.

Six representatives from the Craigiebuckler, Kingswells and Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber Community Councils met with representa-tives from the Consortium on 2nd July. It was agreed that a Countesswells Liaison Group be formed, made up of c.12 CC members, some local residents and other community groups. The purpose of the group would be to represent the views of the community with the consortium in preparation for further public events. It is envisaged that a further round of public engage-

ment meetings will occur in September. The consortium committed to provide much greater detail about the provision of the infrastructure, particularly roads and schools at these meetings. There is a need to build public confidence that the infrastructure will be delivered at the right time and the right place. If it is not, the development should be deferred. Critical to the September events will be the need to show how the infrastructure will be delivered with real transparency on timing, phasing and funding. The September events should provide a picture of what the site will look like with the facilities to go with it to enable more public debate.

The Countesswells Liaison Group will meet regularly with the consortium over the coming months. If local residents wish to make an input into these discussions please contact your com-munity council representatives.

Jubilee PartiesThere were a number of jubilee parties that took place over the first weekend of June in our area. The Community Council were particularly pleased to support the party at St Devenicks Church on the 3rd June. It was an opportunity to bring the community together. We think we should look for more opportunities for community events and we would be very interested to hear from you if you have any good ideas.

The real Green Space writes to MBC NewsI am the real green space, not the im-poster who wrote to you in the last MBC News. It’s true I am situated in a place where I could bring much joy to many people, but I really need a lot of help to make myself a nicer place to come to. You see I’ve been placed in a shaded mostly North and East facing dark and damp valley where the cold wind is funnelled through. My grass rarely dries out enough to sit on, and although you do see photos of people doing just that, there are maybe only two or three days a year when it is possible to have a picnic.

Some people do come to visit me as I’ve been in the news so much recently, but they rarely come back a second time, and if they do, they have an extra layer of clothes on even in the summer.

But I’ve been told I’m going to have a makeover. I’m going to be raised up into the sunlight, newly landscaped and restocked with lovely plants and trees. The ugly railway line and dual carriage way that are my unwelcome next door neighbours are going to be covered over and I will be extended over the top, creating much more space for visi-tors to enjoy. I will even have people sitting out on verandas and balco-nies facing the sunny south where the road and railway used to be, and they will be able to enter these sun traps from Belmont St, one of my favourite places and be able to enjoy a panormic view over my new greenery.

I will have space for events, shows and even street theatre! So I think I will come alive again, and lots of people will come to Aberdeen to see me and enjoy my facilities, and while they are here will enjoy our shops and galleries and restaurants, of which many of the best in Aberdeen are situated all round me. I will literally be the new centre of Ab-erdeen! I feel so proud that I can again help to create jobs for Aberdonians and bring new prosperity to the city centre.

My future is bright again, thank you to all who have thought about me and decided to give me something we can all look forward to.

Yours faithfully,

The Real Green Space

Councillor Boulton on that dear green space! As the Union Terrace Gardens have caused a lot of controversy, I think it is important to make my position clear. I am in Administration with Labour, who are against the current proposals, the Conservatives who are in favour and two other Independents, who like me are still considering the financial implications. My starting point was the result of the referendum, this confirmed that the public who voted were in favour of doing something with the gardens; I say ‘something’ because the majority of people that I have spoken to, who voted yes, have said that they would like the road and railway covered and many have said they would like the gardens improved. That aside, the next stage in the process is to examine the finances and ensure that firstly the funding scheme is sound and secondly that in spending the money we are getting best value for the citizens of Aberdeen. I have shown below the suggested area of spend for the £92m of borrowing and what the repayment amount is, obviously dependent on interest rates:

CITY GARDENS PROJECT (Union Terrace Gardens)Total Project Costs £140mFunding identified from existing sources £55m pledged £15m to be raised

Aberdeen City CouncilTo borrow using the Tax Incremental Financing Scheme £70m

ST NICHOLAS HOUSE REDEVELOPMENTTotal Project Costs £6m

Funding identified fromexisting sources £0m

Aberdeen City CouncilTo borrow using the TaxIncremental Financing Scheme £6m

THE CITY ART GALLERY REDEVELOPMENTTotal Project Cost £24m

Funding identified fromexisting sources £20m

Aberdeen City CouncilTo borrow using the TaxIncremental Financing Scheme £4m

THE CITY REALMTotal Project Cost £6m

Funding identified fromexisting sources £0m

Aberdeen City CouncilTo borrow using the TaxIncremental Financing Scheme £6mScheme

THE NORTH DENBURN VALLEYTotal Project Cost £6m

Funding identified fromexisting sources £0m

Aberdeen City CouncilTo borrow using the TaxIncremental Financing Scheme £6m

Total amount to be borrowed by Aberdeen City Council using the TIF Scheme would be £92m; the amount to be repaid over 25years is approximately £165m using an interest rate of 5.2%. Clearly with this amount of potential borrowing we must ensure that the right decisions are made.

The “new” Administration of the Council will be working over the Summer recess to finalise their vision for the City’s future. We will set out our priorities for the City, how we intend delivering them and the expected timescale. In doing so we will give the clarity and direction the City needs and hopefully end the rumour and speculation which has been circulating in the press.

Dear MBC,I was intrigued to read your letter from ‘a Dear Green Space’. The debate will continue to go on for a period of time yet. However there were a few things that seemed a little disturbing to come from the pen of such an ‘Innocent’ writer. The reference to a particularly nasty man who lived in a German concrete bunker was the most distasteful. Was that the same man who suppressed expression of opinion for large bodies of people? Yet after a democratic vote, where the majority of people said yes to a new beginning, we have no advancement. The views of the minority are overriding the majority. After spending over 10 years living in the centre of Aberdeen, I can honestly say I visited ADGP once. Why? It is dirty, has poor access, is unsafe at dusk/night. The Denburn road is noisy, a rail line is close by, etc. Some of this can be attributed to neglect but at the same time it can be seen as a change of people’s priorities. Aberdeen is host to all manner of events like Youth Festivals, International Markets, Dance festivals, etc. The existing layout of ADGP hides some of these away whilst providing poor access for people of low mobility. At present the safest access is via the HMT end of Union Terrace. This prevents the majority of passing people from wanting to wander in.Glasgow changed George Square many years ago into a concrete site, which faced a lot of opposition. Princes Street Gardens in the

capital has multiple access points and can be seen from many points along the way. George Square now has the capacity to host multiple events without risking damage to the underlying ground. The Great Scottish run starts from it. Where else is central to hold a New Year’s party? It’s a great venue for Big Wheels, music events and many more. Edinburgh allows everyone at any point of the street to cross over and enjoy an open landscaped area with safe paths to walk along and relax from the bustle of the city.Aberdeen could easily adapt to the above models and gain from it. The city still benefits from Hazlehead, Duthie, Westburn, Johnstone and other gardens, all with better access for families. The name Granite Web sounds very grey and nondescript but it is exactly the opposite. Aberdeen is famous for its granite, just like Sydney is for its Harbour. Also as Aberdeen is one of the largest focal points for anything Oil in Europe with multiple ‘spin offs’, the term web is very apt. The GW will have landscaped areas so what ADGP states is incorrect. My last observation to ADGP is why did they write to the MBC News? When I lived less than a mile from them I never once found MBC through my letterbox. So other than trying to stir things up I fail to see their point. The other Dear Green Places listed above are closer to the residents in the MBC area, with far greater relevance.

Ex-City Centre Resident (now MBC resident)

That familiar Green SpaceI was intrigued by your missive from a ‘dear green space’. Is he by chance related to the pot-hole who used to write so wittily in your newslet-ter? Are we to expect more com-munications from say the Haudagain roundabout or the Bridge of Dee in the future?

Being a green space he has not had the opportunity to travel of course and is probably unaware that a comparable green space exists at the heart of our capital, Edinburgh. The Princes Street gardens also have a railway line running through the middle, an adjacent heavily used road and a delightful and nationally recognised art gallery beside them. Yet they are accessed by the public come rain or shine; people picnic there and walk their dogs. A regular venue for music concerts, they also feature in the Hogmanay celebra-tions which are widely enjoyed and televised.

Aberdeen’s dear green space will also be unaware that Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester have open spaces which have been concreted over and ‘landscaped’ in the most unattractive and unimaginative man-ner possible. They are now popular only with pigeons and skate board-ers though they may be pressed into service for the odd protest march.

I think the site in the heart of our city is right to be worried that it is going to be transformed rather than upgraded. Who knows? The next daft scheme that will be suggested, and which we cannot afford, may be a tram from Union Street to the airport. At least the people of Edin-burgh can take comfort from the fact they did not vote for their unpopular and un-needed tram scheme!

Hello from Councillor Malik

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of lower Deeside for electing me. I feel I was made a part of history by being

chosen as the first Asian Councillor in Aberdeen City Council. This was the first time the Labour Party won from lower Deeside and I will try to the best of my ability to serve the people of Cults, Bieldside, Milltimber and Peterculter. So far I have received many emails from local residents regarding various issues. I have always given their concerns my utmost attention and will continue to do so. Many of you will be aware that we lost the no. 93 bus service a few months ago and this was of concern to a lot of people. Therefore I had started a petition requesting the return of this service; the petition had more than 200 signatures. However after discussion with Stagecoach they are unwilling to resume this service due to costs. Another option for this was to approach First Bus which I did and had a meeting with their operations manager Mr Duncan Cameron to discuss the re routing of no.19 service. Mr Cameron had assured me he would look at this and write to me but I am still waiting for his reply, so here’s hoping. If anyone has any problems or issues they want to discuss with me please do not hesitate to contact me on my mobile 07732172225, email [email protected] or my home address 25 School Road Peterculter.Again from the bottom of my heart thank you all.

News from Councillor Aileen Malone I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks for the support I was given in the recent election. It is a privilege to have been elected once again to serve our area. My top priority is to stand up on behalf of residents and to protect the quality of life in our area. Please get in touch at any time if I can help in any way. I will do what I can.

New Community at CountesswellsThe proposed new community at Countesswells is a major development proposal to the north of Cults that will have a major impact on our area. The site will cover approximately 470 acres. The new settlement is intended to be larger than Huntly with mixed use land for housing, commercial use and schools which is being delivered by a consortium of businesses. They anticipate being on site to start the development in 2014 with a completion date of 2028.

This team has held various community consultation events throughout June. There will be a second public consultation event in September. The dates and venues are yet to be finalised. At this event the proposals will have progressed considerably and the team will be presenting a Draft Development Framework and Masterplan for any comment. This proposed new community has considerable implications for traffic, schools etc throughout the area. I urge all to take part in the consultations. I have been relaying comments and questions on behalf of residents. Please get in touch if I can help. Further information can be found on the Countesswells website: www.counteswells.com or e-mail:[email protected].

Contlaw Brae upgrade on trackAfter many discussions, the re-surfacing of Contlaw Brae was approved recently. The work, which is currently on schedule, is expected to be carried out during the October school holidays. As long as the weather stays reasonably kind to us this important upgrade should not fall behind.

Earlswells Road Re-surfacingMany residents have complained to me about the state of the roadway beside Cults Primary School at Earlswells Road. I am pleased that this will at last be re-surfaced. The work is due to be done in the first week of August, depending on weather conditions.

Deeside Line – further re-surfacingThe Deeside line is much appreciated by walkers and cyclists. Over the years I have campaigned to have this popular route improved and much has been done to make this a safer and more attractive pathway. Local people have told me they wish to see further surfacing work to improve the standard of the route and additional work is now scheduled to be done this year. The gravel sections from Culter Station to Bieldside will be resurfaced in tarmac. This will be a welcome improvement. Please let me know any comments and questions.

Over-hanging TreesSummer is a favourite time of year for many of us but it brings its own problems. I have received several complaints regarding overhanging trees and bushes. These can obstruct pedestrians and obscure visibility for motorists. Where there are complaints, the property can be inspected. If the plantings are in a private garden and the situation is causing a danger to pedestrians or drivers, the property owner will be contacted and given 28 days to carry out remedial works. If corrective action is not completed by this time the Council will arrange to carry out the work and

have the costs recharged to the property owner. I will be happy to provide more information.

Cults Swimming Pool Community Cults Academy swimming pool is a very important amenity for our area. Unfortunately, I have received several complaints about poor standards of cleaning in the locker and shower areas. I have brought this matter to the attention of the contractors and I have been given assurance that this will be rectified.

Public Swimming Sessions – Cults AcademyThe public sessions on a Saturday and Sunday are still running. I would like to ensure that members of our local community have fair use of the pool and I have been discussing this with Sport Aberdeen. They are currently reviewing the swimming programme. I have emphasised to them the need to achieve the correct balance between lets and programmed activity. The pool needs to be an accessible, safe and enjoyable facility. Please let me know any comments about the pool and I will follow up.

Getting things done I am always keen to help to get things done for the benefit of our local community. Please contact me if you have any comments, suggestions or questions and I will do my best to protect and improve our local quality of life.

News from Councillor Marie BoultonFirstly let me thank all of those who voted for me at the recent Council Election. I will continue to work hard on behalf of Lower Deeside and Aberdeen.

The new Council term has got off to a busy start. I would like to update you on one of the most important issues, the Schools Estate. Unfortunately a decision by the previous administration to delay the report on the Schools Estate by almost three months, meant that was deferred to the March Education Culture and Sport Committee, which left only three weeks before the end of the school term. We had urgently to arrange temporary accommodation i.e. a portakabin for Milltimber School which will allow them to accept all children living in the area. Other schools across the city faced similar dilemmas. I have described below sections of the deferred report pertaining to Lower Deeside. Full report is available on the Aberdeen City Council‘s website.

Cults Academy ASG is served by three primary schools.• Culter School (Victorian granite building),• Cults School (1970s single storey building with community facilities),• Milltimber School (1970s panelled building).

There were no proposals in the 21CSSP report concerning Cults Academy which is a new 3Rs building. The school is as large as could be built on the site and larger than the school it replaced. It is one of the top performing Scottish state schools, attracting pupils from outwith the zone.

There are three large developments proposed in the area. These are Oldfold at Milltimber, Friarsfield, at Cults and a large proportion of the Countesswells development. Based on the current catchment areas, Cults Primary, Milltimber Primary and Cults Academy will not be able to absorb all of the pupils generated by these developments.

The Local Development Plan indicates that the development at Countesswells will require two or three new primary schools and one new academy. The development is expected to generate 1,500 primary and 600 secondary aged pupils. The Friarsfield development of 280 houses is expected to generate 140 primary and 56 secondary aged pupils. The Oldfold development at Milltimber for 550 houses will generate around 250 pupils.

The Local Development Plan indicates that a new primary school will be needed as a result of the development. The existing Milltimber School is a flat roofed 1960’s building. Cults Primary School is one of the largest primary schools in the city and it is forecast to go over capacity in 2014.

Culter School and Cults School are both B (satisfactory) for condition and for suitability. Milltimber School is B (satisfactory) for condition and C (poor) for suitability. Culter and Cults both rate very poor and poor for energy performance respectively F+ and G.

The roles of all three schools are likely to fluctuate during the next few years. Culter may remain under capacity in future but by 2014 Cults school roll will rise, and the school is predicted then to become over capacity, with this increasing steadily until 2019 (236 pupils = 44% over capacity). The roll of Milltimber School is predicted to fall fairly steadily, becoming zero by 2017 and the school is then predicted to become over capacity in 2018 and 2019 (37 pupils = 14% over capacity).

The main issue is that the primary schools within the ASG will not be able to accommodate the anticipated increase in pupil numbers resulting from the proposed housing development.

A large part of the proposed development at Countesswells currently sits within the catchment zone. The local development plan indicates that this development will require two or three new primary schools and one new academy. The development is large enough to potentially support a new ASG.

A short term issue is the C (poor) rating for Milltimber School for suitability. Longer term issues are about the provision of, and funding for new primary schools and a secondary school in the ASG area to accommodate rising rolls consequent upon new housing developments.

A consultation on the Schools Estate will be carried out once the school holidays are past, events will be carried out across the City and online consultation will also take place, to ensure we reach as many people as possible. I would stress that every option will be looked at from ‘through schools‘, to school closure, school amalgamation, re-zoning of catchment areas. We aim to ensure we get a Schools Estate that is fit for purpose, located in the right place, delivering the best education, with the optimum numbers of teachers and support staff.

Currently underway is a consultation on the Countesswells Development, the official consultation period will have passed by the time you read this, but I would still urge everyone to make themselves aware of the proposals and engage if possible by emailing any suggestions. Clog Dancing – Alive and Clattering in Aberdeen ‘Raggie Morrisons’ was formed in1994 taking our name from a famous draper’s shop which used to stand on George Street in Aberdeen. We are a ladies’ Clog Morris team who dance traditional clog dances. Many of these dances have their origins in the late 18th century and were choreographed by workers on the barges, in the mills and factories of the new industrial towns.

Dances were named after their town of origin and usually danced during local festivals and processions. ‘Raggies’ have continued this tradition by naming our latest dance ‘Bieldside’, which is where we hold our weekly practices. We also dance out during the summer at local events as well as further afield, including a Mayday tour along Deeside.

We are lucky to have our own musicians and clog dancing is a really enjoyable way to keep fit, make friends and get out and about. Would you like to try it out for yourself? Come and learn something new. Experienced dancers and complete beginners all welcome.

Mackinnons Solicitors have, for many years, enjoyed strong rela-tions with the Cults community and, as part of those relations, have forged links with Cults Academy. Over the years, many Academy pupils have offered their services to the charity fund-raising events undertaken by Mackinnons. Without exception, these young adults have proved to be willing, polite, articulate, genuine people with an obvious desire to make a difference.

With this in mind, the Partners of Mackinnons made a conscious decision to recognise these attributes in young people and make an annual award to an individual, nominated by their peers, as being an outstanding member of the community.

This year’s Mackinnons Award has been presented to s6 Cults Academy pupil, Breige Yorston. Breige was selected as a result of all the fundraising work she has done in her final year at school in aid of cancer support.

Cults Academy Deputy Head, Brian Angus, said, “Breige organ-ised a number of events for her fellow pupils to raise money for cancer research. As a younger pupil, Breige had to wear a back brace due to a congenital spine condition. This must have been difficult for her but throughout, she has been very positive, cheery and with an excellent attitude.”

The presentation which took place at the Academy on 13th June was attended by Breige’s parents, a number of teachers, friends and fellow pupils. In welcoming the Mackinnons party to the school, Anna Muirhead, Headmistress, spoke of the strong and valued links the legal firm have enjoyed with the school over a

number of years and how delighted she was that Breige’s hard work, attitude and efforts had been recognised.

Breige is due to leave school in the next two weeks and after the summer, plans to study Geology at Aberdeen University.

Lower Deeside Community CentreThe management committee for the former Cults Community Centre has been meeting for nearly a year now, attempting to keep the facilities going and negotiate its future with Aberdeen City Council. A few decisions have now been made and are reported here.

In June the Education, Culture & Sport Committee agreed that community wings within 3 R’s schools will remain the responsibility of the council to ensure that the lifelong learning requirements of communities continue to be met, and the Council continues to meet its statutory requirements. Officers are to consult with management committees to determine how this will operate in practice.

The Finance & Resources Committee agreed that management committees connected to 3 R’s schools be provided with a grant of £625 per year, for the purpose of purchasing indemnity insurance, and public liability and employers’ insurances.

After school Childcare

The Lower Deeside Management Committee will be entering into a Childcare SLA agreement with Aberdeen City Council once it is properly constituted (Officers, AGM etc.). The Parents Committees of

both the Casper and Casket Clubs have worked on the agreement, attempting to get arrangements to suit their situations and needs, and Gail Woodcock, Service Manager - Communities has met them to discuss the SLA. The final document should be available by Monday 26 July 2012 enabling the arrangement to be formally entered into.

Adult Learning

It is still anticipated that Adult Learning classes can be reinstated as part of the Management Committee programme. Tutors who can support German, French, Italian and Spanish language classes and Upholstery classes are prepared to run programmes in the Community Wing and Academy again. This may not be immediately at the start of the new school session at the end of August 2012 as some of the tutors have installed other arrangements to ensure some continuity for the students.

Interest in any classes is invited by email enquiry to: [email protected] - both to register interest in classes listed above and to enquire about any others that may be of interest in Cults and Culter. Anyone enquiring is invited to put the subject they are enquiring about e.g. Italian, in the email subject line. It may be

after the school summer holidays before a response can be made. As part of the agreement of community wings within 3 R’s properties remaining the responsibility of Aberdeen City Council, a part-time reception will be provided. Receptionists will be able to collect money, accept class registrations and deal with customer enquiries. At LDCC they may be shared with Sport Aberdeen as the facilities are shared. In addition, it is intended to appoint Community Centre Supervisors whose role will include working on programme development with Management Committees, being their key link person to the Council and to the relevant local Learning Partnership.

Sport Aberdeen/Cults Community Wing

Alistair Robertson, the new Chief Executive of Sport Aberdeen attended the management committee meeting of 27 June 2012 and heard of people’s efforts to ensure the facility could and would be used by local people. They expressed their disappointment at the feeling that the facility is not used to its maximum potential. Alistair took up his post in April and intends to review current use and charging structures of sporting facilities throughout the city, the intention being to use facilities to their maximum potential.

St Devenick’s Playgroup NewsSt Devenick’s Playgroup achieves Aberdeen City Council’s Early Years Health & Wellbeing AwardSt Devenicks Playgroup in Bieldside, Aberdeen is the first early years setting in Aberdeen to be awarded the Early Years Health & Wellbeing Award. Playgroup staff were presented with the award on June 7th by NHS Grampian service manager Hilary Young and Liz Gillies, service manager for Education, Culture and Sport for Aberdeen City Council.

NHS Grampian and ACC worked together to develop the new award, which recognises the playgroup’s efforts to promote positive health and wellbeing to children, staff, parents and the wider community. This works to provide children with the

confidence, skills, knowledge and resilience they will need to make healthier lifestyle choices, cope with challenges and embrace opportunities throughout their lives.

Hilary Young said: “St Devenick’s Playgroup should be congratulated on their achievement in gaining the Early Years Health and Wellbeing Award. It not only reflects the hard work of the children but the strong commitment from staff, families and the wider community. The playgroup has demonstrated that health and wellbeing is very much part of their everyday practice.”

Manager of St Devenicks Playgroup, Lesley Swan said “St Devenicks Playgroup is very proud to have gained the Early Years Health & Wellbeing Award.” Suzanne Carry, Chairperson of St Devenicks Playgroup said: “We are delighted to be the first setting to have gained the Early Years Health & Wellbeing award. Health and Wellbeing is embedded into everyday life of the playgroup. Children at St Devenicks are encouraged to grow in confidence and resilience.”

As well as focussing on health and wellbeing this term the playgroup also hosted its own coronation to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The children watched the Queen being crowned then had a fantastic street party to celebrate. After reading the book “The Queen’s Knickers” by Nicholas Allan the children decided to design knickers for the Queen too! The pair judged to be the winner was sent to Her Majesty and we got a lovely letter back thanking us for our thoughtful gift and passing on the Queen’s regards to the children.

Finally, the playgroup finished the term with the children taking part in the first St Devenick’s Playgroup Olympics. They tried mini-versions of Olympic events and completed a sponsored circuit of different sports. This coincided with the Olympic torch visiting the area, enabling the children to gain a wider picture of what the Olympics are about.

Our Mother and Toddlers group runs on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30 to 4pm and it’s a great way to meet other parents from the area. The group is run by one of our wonderful playleaders and costs £2.50. Come along and have some fun – all welcome!

St Devenick’s Playgroup is based on Baillieswells Road, Bieldside.

Playgroup sessions run from 9.20 to 11.50am on Monday to Friday with lunch club on Wednesdays. Rising Fives sessions are from 12.30 to 3.00pm on Tuesday and Thursdays. If you would like to find out more about playgroup or Rising 5’s, please call playgroup on 07931 223545 or Julie on 868644.

St. Devenick’s Church host Jubilee Party

The community came together for an afternoon tea party at St. Devenick’s on Sunday 3rd June to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II with entertainment and refreshments in the afternoon and a musical concert in the church in the evening.

Over three hundred people attended throughout the afternoon and were able to listen to music from a local Jazz band and enjoy a seeming endless supply of burgers, hot dogs and salads in one of the marquees outside, or tea and cakes in the church hall. A small exhibition of local artists’ work was on show in the hall and face painting and games and activities were available for the children outside.

The musical evening included entertainment by the Aberdeen Rock Choir conducted by Chris Mutch; father and daughter musicians, Colin and Jillian Hunter on clarinet and flute; soprano Eleanor House singing a variety of songs, accompanied by Laura Tickell on the piano, and Rowan Ah-See played guitar and sang some of his own compositions. The audience also joined in to sing communal songs and an evening of high quality musical performance was enjoyed by all.

The Aberdeen Rock Choir will be back at St Devenick’s on Saturday November 24th at 7.30 pm, so there will be an opportunity to enjoy their singing then, with proceeds going to the charity Refuge.

MBC Festival 2012 (11th August - 5th September) As you will see from the Festival Programme, the weeks from 11th August to 5th September will be filled with a wide variety of events in which everyone should find something of inter-est. The opening weekend not only sees the Art Exhibition return to Newton Dee at the new Phoenix Centre, but on Saturday 11th August a Fun Afternoon and BBQ will be hosted by the Hillview Community Church (near Cults Primary School) where the Rotary Club will also hold fun races etc. for children. The Cults Hillwalking Club are organising a Sunday Hillwalk on 12th August to round off a busy first weekend. Activities continue on Saturday 18th August with the Leprosy Mission Coffee Morning and

on Sunday 19th, the Rotary Club Charity Fun Run/Walk will be held along the Old Railway line. In the evening the Athol Smith Jazz Band will be playing in Cults Parish Church. From

Tuesday 21st to Sunday 26th August an exhibi-tion of wedding memorabilia ‘Weddings Gone By...’ should provide an interesting new event at Cults Parish Church. Another Family Fun Day will again take place at St. Devenick’s Church on Saturday 25th August

to be followed on Sunday by Songs of Praise, this year at Cults Parish Church. Music will again be by the Northfield Community Band who will also play Music from Shows at the end of the evening. On the final Saturday, 1st September the ‘Kid’s Come and Try’ event will be held at Cults Primary School. This was a very popular event last year and enables primary school children to experience any of the many activities which are available locally. During the Festival a wide range of Dance and Sporting activities run by local Clubs are on offer with ‘Come and Try’ and ‘Open Days’. Come along and try, or just spec-tate and see if you would like to start a new or restart an old interest. All these events are free except for Badminton and Hillwalking (where a contribution towards bus costs is required). The Festival events provide a great place to meet friends and neighbours, to socialise or try new activities and to promote community spirit within the MBC area. We hope you will enjoy this year’s Festival. Programme Flyers are avail-able from a number of local shops, libraries, etc. For any further information please contact: John Page (01224 867988) or Joyce Wright (01224 867398)

Cults Hillwalking ClubCommittee member holidays have conspired to keep the forthcoming talks and walking programmes for the next season secret as this goes to copy in early July. With a very wet June we are still remembering a pleasant May weekend away when about 40 members had fine weather during their stay in Skye. Numerous different routes were walked from the challenging In Pin to coastal beaches. Our AGM in May is also a social event and the business was dealt with reasonably quickly so that we could move on to the cheese and wine. There was no evening talk at the Cults Primary School in June as the club embarked on a short evening walk, this year from Burnhervie to Kemnays, which was followed by supper at the Benachie Lodge Hotel. The Club’s new season starts in September when a new programme of evening talks on the first Thursday of the month, and walks the Sunday 10 days afterwards, will be announced. Why not come along and see for yourself what a varied programme we offer? New members are always welcome. The club website http://www.cultshillwalkingclub.org.uk/ has details of the club walks and other activities or contact Chairman, Andy Roberts on 01224 733710, [email protected] or Membership Secretary John Adams on 01224 868402 [email protected]

Cults Tennis Club – from Dunmail to Abbotshall - 125 years on One hundred and twenty five years ago a group of Cults residents met to discuss the possibility of setting up a local club but the meeting was adjourned in order to engage 50 persons to make the proposal viable. However, on 19 May 1887, 39 gentlemen and 3 ladies agreed to go forward with the intention to form themselves into a Tennis and Bowling Club. They had a very generous offer from Mr Geering for the use of grounds at Dunmail on a regular basis for 10 years at a rental of £10 per annum and he also granted use of his own Tennis Green to the Club. Five years later two committees were formed - a Tennis Committee and a Bowling Committee. The Club was becoming well established with the season opening in May and finishing in October. Additional funds for

activities were raised by holding a Fancy Fair and Floral Fete, which was an elaborate two day event complete with band.

In 1895 the Club moved to ground offered by Mr Geering at Meadowbank for a term of 30 years. At the end of the 19th century the club was experiencing some financial difficulties and it was agreed to have entertainment during winter months. In 1929 the Tennis Club moved to the current site. The ground on the estate at Abbotshall was secured by tennis members agreeing to pay a subscription of £2/10/- which was greatly in excess of the current subscription.

Deficits continued so again in 1932 the Club held a Bazaar, with numerous stalls including fancy work, sweets, fruit and flowers, shooting gallery, bagatelle, miniature golf, fortune telling, conjuring and tea stalls. By now the name of the Club was Cults District Tennis and Social Club. The Club continued successfully through the war years, despite players having to shelter in the pavilion in the event of an air raid siren being sounded.

The intention of the Club had been to buy the Feu at Abbotshall. In 1950, Mr and Mrs Whyte Mackay donated the Title Deeds of the Feu to the Club. The Club continued during 50s and 60s with just under 50 senior members and half as many juniors. There was a revival in 70s and 80s with membership approaching 200 seniors and 200 juniors. 1987 was the Centenary Year for the Club and in recognition of its success, Cults Lawn Tennis Club was awarded the Annual Club of the Year Award by the Scottish Lawn Tennis Association. The same year to fund the ‘Pavilion Project’ members agreed to pay an additional imposed levy to raise funds. Original planning permission for a two storey club house with a balcony was refused but plans were progressed for the one storey extension which we have today.

125 years on and Cults Lawn Tennis Club is thriving. A celebration dinner dance with presentation of trophies is planned for September. Successful competitions and events (including playing tennis with wooden racquets and appropriate attire) have been held during the season. The current members are indebted to the commitment of past members but share the same enjoyment of playing tennis at a local club, the game itself, the challenge and the social banter on court. Times have changed in that we now have a website with full details of current activities -

Cults Primary PTAFundraising UpdateWe’ve had a wonderful run of fundraisers in this last term - each yielding substantial sums towards our main project.

Bags2School in May raised £1,240. We are really grateful to everyone in the community who took the time and trouble to clear out their cupboards, store the bags and bring them in on the appropriate days.

The Summer Fair on 9th June was a huge success. We extended the event by 1 hour this year; a move that was welcomed by everyone because it really helped maximise the mood (and the profit!) on the day. This year’s raffle was particularly well supported with our best ever prizes, and we are enormously grateful to the following companies who helped us raise more than £8,800:

Stratstone Jaguar Garage ; Marcliffe Hotel & Spa ; Hotel Missoni, Edinburgh ; Bedlam Paintball ; Russell Anderson (AFC Captain) ; Gallery Onetwentyone ; Scott Gilmour Optometrists ; Paul Lawrie; Interiors at Home ; Frank Coutts Golf Pro ; Quartz Photography & Imaging Services ; Ian Wilson Soccer Coaching ; Temple Aesthetics ; N Sainsbury & Sons Carpet & Furniture ; Anjools ; Lynn Frost Interiors ; Dental Inspirations ; Alexander R Will Plumber & Electricians ; Hollywood Cars ; The Cults Hotel ; Kelly’s of Cults ; Alison Miller Soft Furnishing ; Orkid ; The Card & Gift Company ; Nicky Walker Florist ; Rowlands Pharmacy ; Dulcia ; Costa Coffee ; Circles of Mannofield. Thanks also, to Aberdeen Football Club, for letting Angus the Bull come to the fair!

A Psychic Night, with Maureen Smith, at the Cults Hotel on Friday 15th June also raised a substantial sum. This unique social event sold out very quickly and was well received. Again, raffles helped us maximise profit, and we would like to thank: The Beauty Fountain ; Ishoka ; Flower Vogue by Kirsty Thomson ; N Sainsbury & Sons Carpets & Furniture ; Tracy Skene ; Susan Smith ; Circles of Mannofield ; Macdonald Highlands Resort.

Our 200 Club was launched in September 2011. Initial membership was much lower than anticipated, with only 34 members by the end of the school year. However, even with low membership, we have handed out prize cheques worth £730+, and have generated nearly £900 for school funds.

Playground Project

We have been awarded two substantial grants towards the playground project. We received £10,000 from the Lottery Fund in May and £30,000 from Entrust (via AberdeenForward). These major funding grants, along with money that the PTA has been saving mean that we will be able to get ALL the planned work done this summer.

The new playground equipment will include climbing and play equipment for all ages, as well as seating for whole classes so that we can make the most of the sunny days (if they ever come back!). We also plan to install surfacing in some of the areas where the grass can no longer grow due to the compacted ground; which should extend the play areas available to the children in the winter and will help reduce muddy shoes and knees!

Thank you to everyone – inside the school and out – for your support in the last school year. We look forward to doing it all again, bigger and better in 2012/13!!

Cults Primary School and the best laid plans…!The whole school picnic has become an annual event at Cults Primary, but this year’s was designed to also be a farewell to our Head Teacher – Mr Iain Smithers – after 20 years in charge. Despite having a gloriously sunny day for our “Olympic Sports Day” the week before, the deluge of rain in advance of our scheduled picnic meant that it had to be moved indoors. The children had their picnics in their classrooms, and a brief whole school ceremony with invited parents was laid on in the gym hall.

Iain was gifted a pair of clogs by Ada Renwick of the Dutch School for the support they have received over the years; they fitted perfectly and allowed Iain and the P7s to kick off an impromptu chant from Queen’s “We Will Rock You”!

During the final term, David Newbatt had helped the children in all primary classes create a large pointillism picture – there was no clear plan of what the picture should be at the outset, but as it moved up through the various year-groups, with children dabbing randomly, an image of a tree and people started to develop. The end result is a serene image of a teacher and children in a natural setting; the picture was beautifully framed and a photograph album of how the painting progressed was also handed over.

Kirstin Gove read out a poem that she’d written especially for Iain, and the PTA Treasurer, Susan Smith, handed over an oversized cheque, representing the donations received from families who wanted to acknowledge Iain’s service at our school. Along with financial donations, the pupils and families had been encouraged to hand in memories, cards etc. and these were collated and placed into a keepsake album by Debbie Bone, for Iain to treasure.

The children had rehearsed two specially written songs – “Smithers” and “Mr Smithers is the Heidie of our School” (sung to well-known tunes) – which we all, including Iain, took delight in hearing.

We wish Iain all the best in his retirement. He had a vision for Cults Primary which required and ensured significant parental involvement in school life, and the whole school community has benefitted from the culture he created. We’ll miss him, but hope that we can build upon the foundations he laid.

How MBC News is made: money mattersSelling advertising for MBC News has got to be the easiest sales “job” around! I do little actual selling, because the vast majority of new advertisers approach us directly asking for space, rather than me having to seek them out! This suits me perfectly, because I am a working mum and do the bulk of the MBC News admin in the evenings via email.

I monitor the [email protected] mailbox, which is how most adverts come to us. These I forward to Sue our amazing layout lady. If we receive any copy via the mailbox, I forward it to our editor, Maureen, so that she can work her magic.

The list of adverts is tracked via an Excel spreadsheet. I use this file to track the total number of “advert” pages sold as well as the new revenue generated by each issue. My simple spreadsheet has been tracking advertising since the current editorial team took over, so I have advertising records dating back six years.

I try to limit myself to a total of 15 pages of adverts in each edition, but keep an eye on revenue too. Each issue costs us approx. £2,500 which includes the print bill, postage costs etc. We regularly generate £3,000 per issue, so we do run with a small surplus on an ongoing basis, and this is how we fund the bi-annual Deliverer’s Party. Occasionally this covers revenue lost when a business goes into liquidation.

Not-for-profit local groups have one-off adverts published free of charge (e.g. scouts jumble sale, school fairs etc.). The local churches have never been charged for their adverts. Charities (e.g. Blue Door shop) pay a charity rate of £10 per ad, but are limited to the eighth page slot for this price.

We usually have approx. 70 advertisers in each edition. When the deadline date comes round, I issue a pdf of the advertiser listing, clearly showing who’s booked an advert, who’s in the middle of a pre-paid run, who needs to be invoiced and for how much.

Sue uses this file to ensure that she includes all necessary adverts in the collated magazine.

Phillip uses this file for invoicing purposes.

Peter uses the file to work out who needs to have a copy of the new issue posted to them (i.e. if they live outside the MBC News area).

Sue generates the draft magazine as quickly as she can, and both Phillip and I review the draft to ensure that all booked ads are included correctly.

Phillip issues the invoices once we’ve received confirmation that the magazines have been received from the printer and that deliveries are starting. Our terms are 30 days from the date of invoice, and payment issues are (luckily) minimal. Phillip and I work together to deal with invoicing queries; if bills are still unpaid when the next issue is ready, those adverts are omitted.

Tracey (advertising) and Phillip (accounts)

Cults Playgroup It has been another busy term at playgroup. At the end of April our theme explored ‘The Weather’. We experienced rain, hail, cloud and just a little sunshine in a very short space of time. This led to some interesting discussions and art work. We followed on with a topic on ‘Myself. The children enjoyed telling us about their families, homes and hobbies. We had a visit from a baby brother and learned how to look after him. We also had a visit from the NHS Grampian ‘tooth lady’ who showed us how to clean our teeth correctly and which foods are good for our teeth.

On warm days we have spent time outdoors in the garden and had the opportunity to put bedding plants in the beautiful planters gifted to us by a member of the church. We will continue to develop the outside area next term with the help of a Woodlands Community Ranger.

On April 26th we said goodbye to our manager Jenny Willox who moved to a full time teaching post in the pre-school sector and welcomed Lisa Gray as our new manager. Lisa has worked in the early years’ sector in a management position before and will be able to assist us in raising the standards of our childcare provision and development of the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’.

We are now happily settled into our new location in the Upper Hall behind Cults Church on Quarry Road. We look forward to welcoming back some of our children in August and getting to know many new faces as well.

Since I last wrote we have celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with street parties in both Murtle and Camphill; in Murtle the road was closed opposite Murtle House as celebrations and games took place while, in Camphill, 14 tables were laid head to foot on the road by St Hilda’s, creating a 100-foot long table - Union Jacks were flying, cucumber sandwiches and strawberry layer cake were eaten and we danced the Hokey-Cokey to finish the party off!

The celebrations were not finished, however, as the following week we took to the North Deeside Road to watch the Olympic relay wind its way into Aberdeen; we were all part of an historic moment as local history was created. In between these two events a group of us walked the length of Aberdeen’s Union Street as part of the second ‘Celebrate Aberdeen’ parade as the folk of Aberdeen paid tribute to the work of the voluntary sector in the city.

Notwithstanding these celebrations, undoubtedly one of the highlights of the term was being recognised as an Eco School as we achieved gold standard at our first attempt. The credit for this lies with our Pupil Council and Eco Committee which has worked tirelessly over the last two years to get us to this point. Many congratulations are due to all those involved.

Earlier in the term we held a fundraising event for the Camphill School in Hermanus, South Africa. With plant sales, a jumble sale, café and candle dipping, we raised over £400, sufficient we hope for them to complete their workshop.

Congratulations go to nine Camphill School students among the 20 who graduate with a BA in Social Pedagogy and 14 who will graduate from Class 12. This year we became a school community open 52 weeks a year and more than half of our children and young people now stay beyond 40 weeks on a variety of ‘service agreements’. At the same time the fund-raising effort undertaken by the Nature Nurture team has raised over £75,000, including a grant from the Scottish Government, which will enable them to run up to three groups a week over the next six to nine months. To this can be added renewed interest in the service offered by the expanded St Andrew’s Project and first applicants for the Sapphire Project. These developments are very encouraging for our future.

The Council of Management recently agreed that our next major fundraising project will be the swimming pool development, which will create far better disabled person access, changing room facilities and a hoist and tracking system. This will bring the building up to modern standards and enable us to offer a better service, both to our pupils and to the wider public. We hope to raise £70,000 and have got off to a good start with a bequest of £20,000 from the family of one of our current pupils. Watch this space…..

And finally, advance notice of our annual school Open Day - Saturday 22 September, 2-5 pm on Camphill Estate. Please make a note in your diaries!

Milltimber Community AssociationThe folks of Milltimber certainly make the best of an excuse to have a celebration! And the Jubilee was just the excuse they needed! As well as lots of street celebrations on the Sunday, the MCA decided to hold one for the whole community at the Hall/Park on the Holiday Tuesday. The format was simple; the Committee provided the venue and BBQs and people took their own picnic along.

The day was a great success despite the weather; in fact as soon as the Barbecues were lit the rain came on. Luckily the rain did not dampen the spirits, although it did dampen the kids on the ever popular inflatable assault course. The marquee (provided by the Scout Association) provided the necessary shelter outside, where music from the last six decades was played and inside the London Jubilee celebrations were being screened live for the more patriotic to enjoy. Casa di Gelato were on hand selling delicious ices and sorbets throughout the afternoon.

And then came the highlight of the afternoon – NOTHING gets everyone away from their drinks like the appearance of a big rope. The Tug-of-War was a hoot; Boys vs. Girls, Lads vs. Dads, Girls vs. Mums and the most hotly contested pull of the afternoon, the Mums against the Dads, the results of which shall remain known only to those who attended.

All in all, a great afternoon, and a big thanks to ALL those who

helped. Special thanks to the Scouts for the Marquee and to Guy for the AV systems.

Things are now winding down for the summer but we’ll be back in the autumn and are planning an evening of ‘Local Tasting.’ Watch this space, or why not become a member of the association, it’s free and regular emails will keep you abreast of what’s happening.

Jeans Too Tight?

Time To Lose Weight?

Forder HypnoticsMaria Forder AMIHProfessional HypnotherapistContact: 07824395671E-mail: [email protected]

I’ve tried many diets but this is so easy. I’ve lost 12lbs in 3 weeks and never felt so positive.

Wayne.

I’ve now lost almost 1 stone, which is pretty good as i’m not on a diet!

Lynn.

Milkshakes for breakfast, no carbs, counting points, pureed baby food,

cabbage soup - sound familiar? Tried them all? Nothing worked?

Perhaps I can offer you an alternative. Would you like to eat normal everyday food and lose weight? Would you like to be allowed to eat cake if you fancied it? Would you like to be inspired to exercise regularly? Would you be willing to try hypnosis to help you achieve the size and shape you believe you should be?All of my clients come to me having tried the popular diets, with limited success. I help them find the reason they cannot lose weight and separate their emotions from food. My methods are very simple, I use hypnosis to help my clients eat when they are hungry, choosing healthy foods, and stop when they feel full. I’m sure most of us have made a decision to do something whether it’s dieting or going to the gym but you just don’t stick to your decision. That’s because there is a part of your mind that doesn’t like change, so it sabotages your attempts to keep to your decision. Hypnosis overrides this and helps you to change. So whether you eat because you are bored, stressed, lonely or it’s a habit, I can help you get back to eating and enjoying food in moderation- no more diets, promise.

Successful Scottish Nearly-New baby and Kids Market Comes to AberdeenA new rival to boot fairs, internet auction sites and newspaper advertising has arrived in Aberdeen. Money wise parents can now buy and sell quality, gently-used baby and child products making savings for their families.

The Jack and Jill Market is a not-for-profit Scottish Social Enterprise dedicated to helping reduce the cost of raising a family while facilitating recycling. By organising large scale, indoor markets, Jack and Jill help parents buy and sell a huge range of quality, nearly new maternity, baby and child products in one place, on one day. Parents can book stalls and keep 100% of the profit they make on the day with most mums making £100-£350 during the market and the top selling mum to date having made £800! Savvy shoppers can handle and compare the goods for sale while collectively enjoying up to 90% off the retail price, making big savings on their favourite brands.

Launched in Edinburgh in 2010 by mum and entrepreneur Nicole Diamond, The Jack and Jill Market has proved so popular that it is steadily growing across Scotland. The Aberdeen community market is being run and managed by Milltimber mum of three, Vanessa Smith. “I’m a keen recycler and believe in being money smart, so I knew I had to get involved in establishing this in Aberdeen.” says Vanessa.

Nicole explains that “Researchers have found the average person in the UK is hoarding £581 in unused but workable everyday possessions. For a two-parent family this adds up to more than £1000, much of which is locked up in toys, buggies and other equipment no longer being used. Increasingly parents are turning away from buying used goods over the internet as the description often does not match up with the reality or more commonly, they do not have the time to chase up sellers and buyers”.

“The percentage of parents that buy nearly-new is now nearly 50% and that is driven by both a current awareness of the impact land-fill has to the environment and the need to recycle, and the current economic climate where thrift is the new cool with many new and experienced parents being more money savvy about how to spend their budget – after all, why spend more, when you can spend less!”.

If you have kids or grandkids aged 0-9 these monthly markets are a great resource. With thirty two stalls bursting with brilliant bargains from cots, car seats and buggies to clothes, equipment and toys these monthly Jack and Jill Markets can help make a real difference to the family finances, a great bonus in the current economic climate.

To sign up for market alerts and make sure you don’t miss out see the website at www.jackandjillmarket.co.ukSunday 9th August, Sunday 12th September and monthly thereafter at Hilton Treetops Hotel, Springfield Road, Aberdeen AB15 7AQ from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Adults £1 entry. Children go free!

Congratulations to Culter Youth Football Club on another successful season, thanks to the commitment and dedication of coaches, managers, first-aiders and fund raisers, as well as the players and their parents. Vice-Chairman and Under16s manager, Dougie MacPherson would like to convey the club’s appreciation for all their hard work over the year.

The aim of the club is to provide football for youngsters at different levels. There are currently 16 registered teams, ranging from Under10s to Under19s, providing maximum participation for around 300 players; the club would like to encourage more girls to join. The club also supports community participation and, as well as the good work done by Jason White with PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups), an increasing number of boys are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh award through training the younger children.

The many positives to report from the season include: ‘A’ league positions for teams in the U19s, U16s, U15s and U13s age groups, with U13s Boys finishing 4th and U15s Boys finishing a close 3rd in A league, and winning the Belmont Trophy. U14s Colts were promoted and with the growing number of boys now training with the club another U13s team has been set up.

Culter Deeside Under13s entered the B League for their first competitive season and won 13

of their 18 games, missing promotion by only one point despite being in the top two places for most of the season. The big success of the season was the trip to Blackpool for both teams, one managing to get to the Final of the Blackpool Cup, beating AFC Blackpool, Invergordon and a side from Bavaria! They also toured Old Trafford, a fantastic experience for both teams.

BLACKPOOL - APRIL 2012

A number of players have had a very good season, notably top goal-scorer, Adam Reid (second year running), Alex Scott and Max Foster. Most improved players this season were Callum Livingston and Dhiluv Lakhani. Max Foster was unanimously voted player of the year by the parents, players and coaches and is well deserved.

The new football pitch has been developed and is almost ready, despite poor grass growth this past winter. Much hard work has gone into trying to improve the growth so that the younger ones can start using it later this year,

and thanks are due to Doug and Geordie at Culter Juniors for their advice and support. Portable changing rooms have been installed: two converted containers kindly donated by Swire. Thanks are also due to DFC Oilfield for their sponsorship and vocal support at matches. Advertising boards will be made available to help with pitch maintenance costs and the club’s next target is sponsorship for training floodlights.

The Vice-Chairman is keen to encourage parents who are not coaches to get involved in the running of the club. The committee, usually made up of team managers, meets on the first Monday of every month and any interested parents should speak to the managers. The effort put in by the fundraising committee also needs the support and participation of all players and parents to ensure the success of events like the Annual Fundraiser Dinner later in the year.

A final thank you from the Vice-Chairman to all the parents for their support and for getting the boys to training and matches on time. There is a great spirit in the club that is worth keeping up. Congratulations to all the players, especially to the Players of the Year; the club is proud of you all.

Opportunities for Aberdeen artists to showcase their creationsEntries for North East Open Studios (NEOS) 2012 may have just closed but VSA, the UK’s largest city social care charity supporting people in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, has announced it has space to accommodate further artists and creators at its annual NEOS event at Easter Anguston Farm, Peterculter.

NEOS is an award-winning, not-for-profit collective of artists, makers and galleries in the north east who open their doors to the public each September. VSA’s Easter Anguston Farm has been a venue for the last four years.

Belinda Rowlands, farm manager at VSA’s Easter Anguston Farm, said: “We are so excited to be a NEOS venue again. We’ve already attracted some great local talent for 2012 and, as usual, we’ll be celebrating the creativity of VSA service users, displaying artwork from Easter Anguston Farm trainees and Friends for Life clubs’ children with additional support needs.”

“However, there’s still space for many more to join us, whether old, young, a dab-hand or a newbie. It’s an ideal occasion for artists in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to present work to a captive audience and support the local community at the same time. Our space is most suited to sculptors, ceramicists, land artists and other outdoor exhibitors but there is very limited indoor space remaining too.”

“We’re also keen for students and other groups to consider working collectively on a NEOS project. For the last few years, we’ve been lucky enough to be home to the Knit Wits, a group of knitters led by VSA Trustee Rosy Wood, who come together for NEOS each September. The knitters covered the farm in multi-coloured woollen sheep last year and have already organised their 2012 designs. They’ve gone for a topical animal theme but to find out more, you’ll have to visit in September!”

Well-known local artist Alex Kay has been heavily involved with NEOS at Easter Anguston Farm over the past four years. She said: “Easter Anguston sets itself apart from other galleries by creating a unique link with art and the community. Local creatives can showcase their work while raising awareness of the UK’s largest social care charity. That’s what drives me to be there every year.”

The Peterculter-based attraction, comprised of a 70-acre working farm and 20-acres of woodland, nurtures adults with learning difficulties. It provides meaningful work and training in social skills as well as horticulture, aiming to eventually ensure trainees are confident about entering the potentially intimidating mainstream job market. The farm is open to the public and has a coffee shop, education centre, farm shop and garden centre where the trainees sell their homegrown fruit, vegetables and plants.

To find out more or get an application form for exhibiting at NEOS at Easter Anguston Farm, con-tact Claire McBain, fundraising officer, on 01224 358611 or e-mail [email protected]
