Very little room at the top appears to be the situation for the next few weeks. Power Trio remains the same as last week and all three have plenty of muscle. CHICAGO pours it on in the "Hit Factor" arena, confirming their fourth winner at 85 %. FOREIGNER closest to matching MADONNA's "Crazy For You" blazing chart action, nearing the top ten in only 3 weeks. ANIMOTION has continued to build week by week; now showing a much improved "Hit Factor" of nearly 70 %! As far as increases go, MURRAY HEAD more than doubles "Hit Factor" status up to 52% from 25% last week. SIMPLE MINDS had less than 10% of overall airplay when it became "Record To Watch" back on February 15th. This "Breakfast Club" special debuts at New York's Z100 #14, WPLJ #17, 92KTU #24 and added at WAPP. Same story across the country as Miami confirms it at I -95 20 -10, Y100 25-16, Chicago's B -96 19-14 and added at WLS. West Coast leads the way at KIIS 12 -6, KKHR 11 -6, KMEL 6 -3, KDON 17 -8, etc. SADE ready to score her first American hit with a long list of stations moving it up inside the top twenty, including WBCY 25-' 5, WCCC 26 -15,

WKZQ 23 -17, Q104 26 -13, WRKR 23 -19, WHYT 27 -19, KTXY 25-17, KRQ 28 -12, KS103 31 -14, KLKT 28 -12... very impressive. HOWARD JONES moves into "Chartbound" position with adds in New Haven KC101, Bangor WZON, Washington DC Q107, Balti- more B104, Augusta WBBQ, Richmond WQLK, Stevens Point WSPT, FM102- Sacramento, L.A. KIIS, etc. The TIME has The Bird flying high at WBMW 10-8, B -97 #5, WKXX 13 -7, WDEK 9 -6, Q104 21 -7, and WLLI -Joliet debuting at number 9. Belief growing fast for KATRINA AND THE WAVES (33 adds) and RICK JAMES (32). Any record that reaches a 10% "Hit Factor" with only 30 reports is certainly a Record To Watch", that's the NEW EDITION story,

debuting at KWES, KMEL, KSTN, WQBZ, WKSP, FM102, and added at WANS, WXKS /FM, WORD, WRFC, Z -98, WPFR, KIIS /FM, KRRG, WHYT, WBLU and moves 15-13 I -95, #14 Y100 and 26 -16 WMPZ. Jonathan Little at Z104- Madison reports KURTIS BLOW's "Basketball" was featured in his nightly "make it or break it" spotlight feature with listener's response 85% positive.

PROMOTIONS BETTY HOLLARS

PARADE OF PARADES Thousands are expected to join WMMR for the 1st Annual WMMR Morning Zoo April Fool's Parade on Sunday, March 31st All musical bands will play one song through- out the parade -the classic "Louie, Louie," and WMMR will attempt to set records in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest group to perform "Louie, Louie" when all the musical groups assemble for a rendition of the song conducted by WMMR's JOHN DeBELLA.

pictured (left to right) standing: Kid Leo (WMMS M.D.), Denny Sanders (WMMS A.T.) Chuck Wright (Giuffria), John Gorman (WMMS Op. Mgr.), Greg Giuffria (Giuffria), Alan Krigger ( Giuffria), Matt the Cart (WMMS AT.) Kneeling: Gary Bird, Mike Rose (MCA), Craig Goldy (Giuffria), Gina brillo (WMMS Prog. Asst)

COFFEE BREAK CONCERTS RETURN On Wednesday, February 20th at 1 pm, GIUFFRIA took to the stage at Peabody's Downunder to kick -off the return of the WMMS -CLEVELAND COFFEE BREAK CONCERT. This was the first after a four month absence due to a fire at the Cleveland Agora, which was the original location of the concerts. WMMS mid -day Buzzard MATT THE CATT resumed his "Host Duties." A line of people began as early as 9 am in front of Peabody's Downunder. The doors were opened at 11 am, with hundreds of people having to be turned away!

"METERMAN" HITS THE STREETS WORC -WORCESTER's METERMAN hit the streets in late January. He feeds expired meters in the downtown area and leaves messages behind telling parkers they were saved from a parking ticket With his outlandish costume, it really enhances the station's visibility, plus of course earn- ing the gratitude of the "saved."

MONEY VALENTINE KIXS /FM- KILLEEN /TEMPLE, TX, made this Valentine's Day easier for ten of their listeners. On February 13,

KIXS /FM took ten calls at specified times and let the callers record a Valentine message to their sweetheart (30 seconds or less). On the 14th, KIXS /FM hand -delivered the tape recorded message on cassette, along with a rose and $50.00 to the winners' sweethearts.

HOP GOES FOR THE GREEN Mr. David Allyn Kraham, P.D. of KHOP/FM- Modes- to /Stockton, CA calls to tell us about his green St Patrick's Day promotion last week. When listeners were asked to send in "anything green" (the more original, the more apt to win), they came up with some beauts. For instance: an office -sized green door, behind which was painted a pic- ture of Marilyn Chambers, grass (which was green when harvested), a dead frog (which was green when alive), a green fingernail, and someone's grandmother's dentures painted green. Winners (7 of them) got dinners for 2 at both Stockton and Modesto restaurants.

Local Pueblo fireman "Cooling Things Off."

COOL -OFF THE KISS -OFF KIDN - Pueblo, CO celebrated Valentine's Day with their listeners by holding their "First Annual Great KID'N Kiss - Off." They started with 14 chosen couples competing for more than $1,000 in prizes and cash. After 20 hours of almost non -stop kissing (the couples had to remain stand- ing the entire time), one lucky couple walked away with the loot and a severe case of chapped lips. During the contest, members of the KID'N staff arrived with survival kits which included chap sticks, breath mints, mouth wash, bumper stickers and T- shirts. The fire department was also availa- ble in case things got too heated.

THE GAVIN REPORT March 29, 1985

RANDOM THOUGHTS FROM

HOLLYWOOD

Does anyone remember when Saturday Night was the evening to stay home and watch television? As recently as the mid -seventies, it was ALL IN THE FAMILY, MARY TYLER MOORE, MASH, NEWHART and the original SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!

Now THAT lineup HAD to hurt the rock concert business ... and if you're wondering why Saturdays are so BIG at the venues these days, here's a list of current Saturday fare: DIFFERENT STROKES T.J. HOOKER DOUBLE TROUBLE AIRWOLF GIMME A BREAK LOVE BOAT COVER -UP HUNTER FINDER OF LOST LOVES OTHERWORLD ITS YOUR MOVE.

The question is ... has ANYONE, other than Ed 'I Must Say Grimley EVER seen any of these programs? No one WE know has, and as a result, TV has lent a helping hand to us in the music industry.

Here's our suggestion to the network moguls if they want to continue to assist our acts: Dump CHEERS and HILL STREET BLUES from your Thursday schedule and replace them with anything starring McLean Stevenson and /or Tim Conway and we'll REALLY be in business! If you'd like to contribute MIGHTILY to us record folks, how 'bout reviving the Dean Martin Roast! Or Dean Martin for that matter.

INSIDE DOPE: The Capital Cities acquisition of ABC -TV will be shortlived. It was strictly for tax purposes, and Rick Dees will be purchasing the network from Cap Cities for 4 point 5 billion within thirty days. He plans to install Les Garland as programming head, a move which will immediately replace Joan Collins with Madonna and Blake Carrington with William It;ol.

21 44 Our readers will note that Art Roberts

is the only Gavin correspondent who had the chutzpah to honor the recent writers' strike. Eric, Elma, Ron, Dave and yours truly buckled under and crossed the somewhat violent picket line in front of the plush Gavin San Francisco offices. Although I was personally upset by the cries of "scab!" from Art and his hordes of compatriots, I was determined to file my Grammys column on the chance of a mini -chuckle from one of the Zimmerman Brothers.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW DEPARTMENT: The Buffalo Springfield: Currently working the Quality Inn Lounge circuit. This sixties' aggregation has worked up a new arrangement of "For What It's Worth," which they introed at Rick Sklar's ninetieth birthday party.

Bruce Wendell: Formerly with WINS, KDAY, KBLA and Capitol Records. This renaissance man is working on an in- depth bio of a guy who once met Alan Freed, and supports himself with the two -man mime act which he and Buzz Bennett perform on Fisherman's Wharf.

SCOOP FROM THE WORLD OF ADVERTISING: Olympic champ and surly guy Carl Lewis has been whining to the media about the lack of commercial endorsements coming his way after winning four gold medals. Our sources tell us it's because of his

uncanny resemblance to Grace Jones ... and HER image is just too bizarre for General Mills. We suggest a Dorothy Hamill hairdo for the irritable sprinter and guarantee that THEN he'll see himself on those Wheaties boxes.

CONTEST: For anyone who can explain to us just what Harvey Mednick was talking about in his R &R column about the cherry and the cake ... we offer a cherry AND a cake at Musso and Frank's Grill in Hollywood next time you're in town. This contest includes Harvey himself and anyone who knows a parable from a simile, from a metaphor. If you think Harv's place was a travesty of a mockery of a sham ... you obviously don't need to renew your subscription to Atlantic Monthly.

To the guy who wrote the cowardly threatening letter about my alleged put - down of country music several weeks ago, I have the folowing rejoinder: YOUR MOTHER LOOKS LIKE THE STATLER BROTHERS!

John Fogerty roadie Mervyn Harmon, whose life story was chronicled here recently, has resigned and joined Shep and The Limelites on their 'Daddy's Home' Tour.

Dynamic new heavy metal group, THE PAPER ADDS, is booked into The Holywood Palace on Passover Weekend. They have promised that, upon introduction, they will appear on stage and never utter a sound.

And THAT's Hollywood!

It started out almost like a fairy tale. Five youngsters coming from a rough inner city environment strike it rich after singing and dancing on the streets to a tape blaster's accompaniment. Actually, that's the easy way to look at the meteoric rise of New Edition. Fairy tales usually leave out the fine details like hard work, timing, and peer insight.

At the tender ages of thirteen and fourteen, New Edition was formed by

Ricky Bell, Ronald De Voe, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, and Michael Bivins, who we recently spoke with. To categorize New Edition originally as a

streetcorner act is simplifying the facts a little. lt wasn't really that organized.

"We just started singing, not on any particular corner. We weren't really an act, we were just doin' it," Bivins recalled.

Eventually the dance steps did get a

little tighter, the vocals a little sweeter, the harmonies together enough to enter a local talent show sponsored by

Boston entertainment entrepreneur Maurice Starr. As urban circumstances would have it, New Edition placed second to a rap group. However, the lucky break came when the winning rap group couldn't record the grand prize, one of Starr's slick soul tunes. So New Edition recorded that song, their first single, "Candy Girl," with most of the sessions scheduled after school.

Do you remember the first time you heard New Edition on the radio?

"lt was around Christmas of 1982," said Bivins. "We did a radio interview on WRBB, a college station. They introduced "Candy Girl" before it was out lt wasn't on wax, it was on tape"

New Edition's first label association was the then street level Streetwise Records of Boston, with Starr and pi o- ducer /mixer Arthur Baker providing primary leadership. Under Streetwise's direction, "Candy Girl" hit number one on Black Music /R &B charts nationwide, at one time edging out Michael Jackson's "Beat It" (particularly

ironic considering obvious comparison with and inspiration from the Jackson Five). Eventually the boys met their mentor.

"He understands what we're going through because he went through it," Bivins remembers. "He told us to stick in there and keep a level head."

By the summer of 1983, New Edition's relationship with Streetwise was legally dissolved after a suit between the parents and the label ruled the boys free agents. The judge declared that the contracts signed with Streetwise were null and void after it was discovered that the label had not sought approval

"We tell kids that ifs important to stay in school."

in probate court prior to entering a

complicated legal agreement with a

group of minors. "As far as negotiating contracts and

stuff like that that's usually done upstairs. That's not our job."

Making the transition from vocal group to recording artists meant gaining experience as live performers. s

Up until switching labels, New Edition played primarily on the dance club circuit, making guest appearances in S urban dance clubs, lip- synching or 'A performing to taped backing tracks, never requiring the services of a back- ¡, up band live.

Signing with MCA Records forced Co; New Edition into making the total commitment towards becoming a big time act. A rigorous touring /recording schedule demands the use of tutors keeping the members up on their studies. The band also lends their name and efforts to all sorts of "Stay In

School" promotions. Nationwide school attendance contests using pledge cards are set up. The first prize is an assembly appearance by the band.

Times are good for five young boys from Roxbury, Massachusetts. Their current tour is a sold -out string of up to

12,000 -15,000 seaters. They've recently filmed a Coca -Cola commercial. The band receives 10,000 fan letters a week. In assessing their appeal, Manager Bill Dem (who also handles John Waite) comments, "In a way, New Edition is

telling kids their own age that it's okay not to be so cool you're an idiot"

New Edition is now trying to collect enough time to follow up their first platinum MCA release. Material and producers are usually presented to the members, who spend a lot of their time together on the run. The latest album was assembled by four different sets of producers.

What about working with Ray Parker Jr., who wrote and produced "Mr. Telephone Man "?

"That was pleasant," mentions Bivins. "It was something we'd always wanted to do -work with someone as high as Ray Parker is in the music business. lt

just so happened Ray was the first We hope to continue working with artists of his stature in the near future."

Who'll be there for an upcoming session in New Orleans?

"Maybe they've got a surprise in store," Michael conjectures. "They usually surprise us with people."

With the current LP now well over a

million and a half units, New Edition has turned the corner, becoming a

group of young men performing music aimed at their immediate peers. Their music has a sugary, harmless innocence unique to what's currently riding Black, Dance, and Top 40 charts these days. New Edition has so far maintained primary support from their early core supporters at Black /R &B Radio, stemming from their days at Streetwise.

"Were glad that our music is getting played in nightclubs reaching adults. lt

lets us know that what we're trying to accomplish is on its way."

Still, New Edition's most impressive accomplishment is speaking responsibly to their own generation of fans. "We tell kids that it's important for them to stay in school, to take in all the things around them and inside of the school and use it to their advantage."

Appearances at schools often bring questions, some of them loaded. What's the most common?

"Do we have girlfriends ?" And what's the reply? "No. We have lady friends and we

meet a lot of girls, but nobody has a

specific woman." Not yet, anyway.

In a normal week the Manhattans would have at least held its own at $5, but phenomenal growth on both USA For Africa and Madonna makes the Manhattans take two steps back. Anybody see any fatigue in the top six? I didn't think so. Fogelberg, Alabama and Billy Ocean should pull major moves next week along with Foreigner and Wham!. Four debuts next week, with Eric Carmen and Chicago leading the way. The last two weeks we've seen a considerable drop off in adds per week. The usual culprit is the beginning of the Spring Arbitron rating, but it would also be hard to match the volume of GREAT A/C records made availabe to us during the past few months. Ron

THE GAVIN REPORT March 29, 1985

P.D. NOTEBOOK by Eric Norberg

PD in the PM, Part 2

In the February 8 column, I expressed skepticism that PD's could handle PM drive on the air and their Program Director duties without some compromise to both. I've received a

letter from one PD who does both and makes it work. He's Mark Larson, Program and Operations Manager of KFMB (AM) in San Diego:

"As an 'on air PD' who handles afternoons, I can't dictate how it will work for others ... but I can explain how it works for me.

"After being off -air PD for a few years here, I went back on, in March 1981 ... for a variety of reasons ... hopefully most of them GOOD. I knew then that the ONLY way I could handle it all would be to get a total grip on my time. So, it was back to The Time Trap and other great books that we need occasionally to brush up on, to stay on track. AND it took a restructuring of my entire day.

"It helped to gear calls to a period in the morning ... set time for return calls between, say 10:30 and 11:30 am (after a moratorium between 8:30 and 10:30 am in which the switchboard took

messages). The key is making it a habit to return the calls ... and to discipline yourself. I found that most major calls and problems develop in the morning - not 2 -5 pm as you noted -but it's

different for everyone. It does take some conditioning of the people you do business with; making it clear when you're available. As long as the on -air PD manages his time (and helps others manage theirs), it works.

"By the way, I have just discovered the most fantastic planner I've ever used -guaranteed to help you get rid of boxes, overstuffed files, and yet keep BETTER records -and KNOW WHERE TO FIND ALL THE INFORMATION. It's

called the "Franklin Planner" -and it's

available from the Franklin Institute, Salt Lake City. Good stuff!

"The reasons many PD's have such a

problem is that they don't have a real plan. No system of delegation. It is

possible to do both jobs well ... if you give them both the necessary attention and enthusiasm!"

I'm very impressed with Mark's letter and agree with him that the secret to combining what easily can be two

different jobs, with two different people doing them, is planning and organization.

I suspect that I have difficulty being that organized. I also suspect that I am a little less apt than Mark is, to do the necessary "conditioning of the people you do business with." However, in

reflection, in virtually all of the PD jobs I've had so far, I had duties relating to writing copy for the sales department, even when I was at KEX in Portland, Oregon; and copy tends to come in late in the day. If I was on the air in the afternoon, I'd wind up doing the copy - and resultant production -after I got off the air.

As Mark says, "It's different for everyone." But if your particular situation makes it desirable that you be both PD

and PM drive DJ, Mark's comments should help you pull it off!

Your letters are always welcome! Write me c/o the Gavin Report, or through Consolidated Communications Consultants, Suite 209, 2130 Huntington Drive, South Pasadena, CA 91030.

SOUTHERN ACCENTS -TOM PETTY (MCA) DREAM INTO ACTION -HOWARD JONES (ELEKTRA) Petty debuts at ?t2 and will likely see ?k1 next week. Howard Jones makes a terrific CERTIFIED debut at #17!

"Steady" -JULES SHEAR (EMI America -12 ") Here's a switch. CYNDI LAUPER co- writes one cool tune for songwriter JULES SHEAR. Mark your GAVIN, this one'll be one huge huge record. When this one cracks TOP TEN, maybe we can finally use all the bio trivia on JULES in a future BIO FEEDBACK. This is one of those money -in- the -bank songs that'll keep ole SHEAR in cheese- burgers forever.

Things Can Only Get Better /Bounce Right Back /...Get To Know - HOWARD JONES (Elektra) HOWARD JONES was on trial in my mind until his new single stormed its way hither. His chops as a key - boardist are respectable (check the final solo on the single),yet his use of melody may scare off album programmers. However, this single could very well catapult him onto much higher, ground. So far it's catching on good. Usually once his face gets familiar, album radio is playing catch -up ball, holding the bag with a bunch of mediocre metal bands in medium rotation. This time we won't get fooled again. Bass note of the year goes to the single. Produced by RUPERT HINE, known for combining progressive sound with hit results.

The Riddle /Wouldn't It Be Good /Wide Boy -NIK KERSHAWIMCA) In the same vain as HOWARD JONES is NIK KERSHAW,whose sophomore LP is impressive as well. Both share almost indentical chops in melody and keyboards. There is aggressive playing and the recording /production is quite superb. I was surprised and sorry I overlooked this LP until now. A very tight and chal- lenging effort, bordering on fusion oriented accompaniment, NI K's been listening to AL JARREAU and STEVIE WONDER. "Wouldn't It Be Good" is also included, in case you overlooked (like a lot of people) this fine song.

No records were qualified this week. See analysis on page 26 for the full story.

She's Out With a Gun /Right On Time /Midnight Sensation - VAN -ZANY' (Geffen) This is an LP indicative of the changing mood of Album Radio. Ordinarily a singer like VAN ZANT would have rocked his way through all ten trax. Yet after three years of "southern boogie ", VAN -ZANT decides to finally sing to the whole country. The voice shows signs of maturity plus the mater- ial extends beyond the single. The above listed trax show a little more feeling.

Love's Great Adventure /One Small Day /Reap The Wild Wind/ All Stood Still -ULTRAVOX (Chrysalis) -It's worth your while to dig through ULTRAVOX's COLLECTION since most of the great songs on this compilation have never received more than a trickle of American airplay. Spanning the previous four LP's (VIENNA, RAGE IN EDEN, QUARTET, and LAMENT) most of these tunes sound remixed and great.

Method To My Madness /Murder Style -LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH (IRS) These guys look, sound, and play like death. There's a

method at work, all right. Each song rocks and teeters to the point of either succeeding or else falling flat. THE LORDS. have a rather faithful following at the Alternative Radio level. A classic moment of their live show was when (after opening act REM finished) vocalist STIV BATORS accidently knocked himself in the balls swinging the mike.

ANALYSIS This'll be PHIL COLLINS' last week at number one. TOM PETTY

will be stepping in next week, no problem. TEARS FOR FEARS makes a remarkable leap to number three. Will VAN the MAN crack TOP TEN ?? HOWARD JONES (known to our computer as HJONZ) is this week's CERTIFIED, debuting at 617, after getting a push from the single. Album Radio's appeal to women should increase. Compared to normally none, there are five female acts (not count- ing the male acts that could also draw female demos) on the Chart

alone. Major achievers include POWER STATION, JASON E HIS SCORCHERS, KATRINA, PORKY'S REVENGE, ALISON MOYET, and FIONA. Look for KENNY LOGGINS, GRAHAM PARKER, and perhaps JULIAN LENNON to debut onto next week's chart... Music played a big part in this year's OSCAR awards. AMADEUS, PRINCE, and STEVIE WONDER all made waves with the cellulites. In fact, STEVIE's music was banned the very next day by the SOUTH AFRICAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION for, mentioning NELSON MADELLA... look for a brand new EURYTHMICS LP near April I1th (if these two fuss budgets ever finish remixing)... .

How important is playing a good and wide variety of music? Here at the GAVIN, we talk to an awful lot of aggressive FM Top Forties. The competition is fierce. These guys don't mess around BARBARA WALTER's talking to BOY GEORGE was hilariously lame. She was much better off with NEIL DIAMOND or EICE CHERRY, as he almost called himself... betcha didn't know that LOS LOBOS have passed the 200,000 unit mark...SCOTT ROSEN- BERG at KSTM- PHOENIX is playing the extended mix of ANIMO- TION's "Obsession ". It seems like other extended mixes would work , too. Listen to those suckers before you pitch them... Enough is enough . DENNIS ERECTUS, former KOME -SAN JOSE crazy is available, fer cryinoutloud. This guy puts hours into pre -show preparation to give em just that --a real show. Give him some ground rules and watch him go. Phone him at 415- 351 -3876. GAS number two has hit the postal system. There's no stopping it now. In less than VI hours, both signed STRANGLERS LP's were given away...The upcoming GINO VANNELLI LP, due out here soon, is different and very strong. It's already done very well in Europe...BUNKER FAVES of the week is the wonderful single by JULES SHEAR and the deep dark sounds of SISTERS OF MERCY -- especially "Marian ". Have mercy, stay well KZ.

ANALYSIS March 29, 1985

It's six consecutive weeks at number one for THE SMITHS. The strength of the music, and timing of its release, are making it one of 1985's top Alternative albums. The record is deep in material and showing no signs of fatigue. The VELVET UNDERGROUND and STRANGLERS check into the next two positions for the fourth week in a row.

This blockade will be challenged by POWER TRIO entree THE BLASTERS, who have steadily climbed since their debut on the chart March 1st. They're exhibiting potential, for futher growth should eventually squeeze inside the top three. The quantity of airplay is very good, but they will need improved rotations to compete for #1.

TEARS FOR FEARS are experiencing multi- format success on Alternative,Album, and Top 40 radio. The album, like many Alternative records crossing over now, is so deep in material that there are plenty of songs from which to choose.

There is no CERTIFIED headliner this week. CERTIFIED's are recently released albums exhibiting outstanding growth in an early stage of development. There has been a recent lull in new releases, but that should change quickly! Our two MOST ADDED records GRAHAM PARKER and LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH are likely candidates for future CERTIFICATION.

THE GAVIN REPORT March 29, 1985

GASTRONOMICS by Art Roberts

"Alo mes amies. Mademoiselle, Monsieur -welcome to the Roberts Back To Basics Cooking School. In this class you will learn recipes today that will make you a better chef tomorrow. Now, please put on your apron and gather around the table so we may start planning the menu. We begin with Freedom Fondue.

"The purpose of a Fondue is to give the audience a choice, ñ est pas? They all dip into the same pot, but each finds a different ingredient that pleases them. That is why, in order to accomplish variety, one must include color, taste, and selection, and then allow each server to dispense this delicacy in their own style. Limit the contents of a Fondue, or restrict the method in which it is served, and you will quickly bore your audience, causing them to leave before the rest of the dinner is served.

"Next we serve Stability Of Staff Souffle. Unlike the Fondue, once the correct ingredients for a Souffle are

JOBS

found, it is best never to change, if at all possible. In time, your guests will grow to appreciate the familiar flavor and the delicate formula with which it is prepared. I know of many cooks who insist upon constantly changing the contents of a proven recipe, only to find their Souffle falls flat, never to rise again.

"Enter, The Entree. The meat is the main course. When properly cut and aged, there is really no need to add very much of anything else. Served medium rare, au jus, it is most appealing to the majority of the palates. Do not overcook the entree as it will become harder to digest Remember, the secret to fine cooking is to never go to extremes in

either direction. Serve the meat with a

simple side dish of double baked promotions, and get ready for the compliments.

"As in all great French restaurants, the Musical Salad or Le Salad de Musique is served last, and is

considered the piece de resistance of

the dinner. A salad is more than greens, yellow, reds and orange. There must be a delicate balance of ingredients. The new, fresh and crisp is skillfully blended with the old standbys that are never allowed to look wilted or tired. There is

a growing trend today to let others prepare the salad and observe the reaction. Need I remind you, a great Chef does not copy. They innovate. Create. Excite their guests with imagination. Do not be afraid to experiment with a variety of spices. A dash of this, a pinch of that -you will be amazed with the results.

"For dessert, I have chosen a Low Audience Turnover. Not too sweet, nor too tart- encrusted in a light flaky dough, the Turnover never appears to be heavy, and will convince your friends to come back for yet another time.

"Voila. Simply by returning to the basics, your audience will sample your creations with increased frequency. Bon Appetite."

It's been a confusing week for programmers, with both EXILE and STEVE WARINER having two new records out. Here are the stets on all four: "Stay With Me" -EXILE (Curb /MCA) - 15 Adds, "She's A Miracle" -EXILE (Epic) - 26 Adds, "When We're Together" -STEVE WARINER (RCA) - 13 Adds, "Heart Trouble" -STEVE WARINER (MCA) - 28 Adds.

BOB RANDALL- KQBR -BRAINERD is getting more calls for THE JUDDS "Drops Of Water" than for "Girls Night Out ". CHARLES LANDE at WMLS /FM- SYLACAUGA reports great response to the album cut "Restless Heart" by RESTLESS HEART.

STEVE STROUD's number one requested song is an album cut - "She's Gone" by WILLIE NELSON. Very big for CRAZY EDDIE at WMC- MEMPHIS is "Little Things" by the OAK RIDGE BOYS. SYLVIA, CONWAY TWITTY, EMMYLOU HARRIS, and RONNIE MILSAP are all "cookin "' in GRAND JUNCTION for DON RHEA at KQIL. DAN OLSEN tells us that SAWYER BROWN and the FORESTER SISTERS are especially hot at WXYQ -STEVENS POINT.

If you look back at last week's four choices for "Chartbound", you'll find the first four headline listings for this week. "Certified's" go into the chart at #22 for the TEMPTATIONS and #24 for B.B.KING. "Chartbusters" come in strong, too, at #25 for WHITNEY HOUSTON and #27 for EUGENE WILDE. They all had better be on the lookout for three artists - all male - who did something that's fairly irregular - they skipped "Chartbound" completely and "charted ": JEFF LORBER at #28, GEORGE BENSON at #29 and an astounding HAROLD FALTERMEYER goes from "first time listed on this page" to charted at #30! A quick look at this week's four new Ghartbounds show another unusual reaction to action on SHANNON's "Do You Wanna Get Away" - could be she wants to "get a way" into the chart ahead of many who've been hanging around. First week response is almost uncanny. It's one of those that passes the "loved it the first time I heard it" tests, whether the test was given in the car or on the office turntable. So if the listeners like it as much as their programmers that I've spoken to this week, SHANNON's on her way to something big. KLYMAXX is another one that several of you have

stopped midway through your reports to comment to me about. I like to keep tabs on any deviance in your tone of voice while giving what routinely can get to be a monotone listing of gainers on your charts and KLYMAXX ends up with the most hash marks on the note pad next to my terminal! Whatever the "Meeting In The Ladies' Room" is all about, it must be holding your interest. RICK JAMES' number on next week's chart is anybody's guess, but high guesses would be in order at this point in time. OCEAN "winds" up with three in a "row" now - "Suddenly" is upon us with a vengence (Chart number next week, mateys) . Everything else pales in comparison to SHANNON when we take a look at newer listings, although CHAKA KHAN and STEVE ARRINGTON had good weeks and hold promise for better ones. AMII STEWART's back with "Friends" and might be a sleeper to open your eyes to - some of you are pretty high on it already, as is true of the JEFFREY OSBORNE. Could be as big as his last without much effort based on the spread in airplay this week. Also starting to get good reports on the new PHILIP BAILEY and READY FOR THE WORLD. Betty

THE GAVIN REPORT PERSONAL PICKS March 29, 1985

Qtc Personal Picks

JULES SHEAR - Steady (EMI America) Cyndi Lauper thanks her buddy Jules for writing "All Through The Night" by co- writing this seductive tune that incorporates a McCartneyesque chorus. Trivia buffs will surely remember Jules as a member of the Funky Kings, who fought a cover battle with Johnny Rivers on "Slow Dancing" in 1977, and of course his ever popular band, Jules and the Polar Bears (I own all their albums) .

GLENN FREY - Smuggler's Blues (MCA) America's declared war on drugs is in full swing, resulting in stepped up enforcement by government agents. Glenn's appearance on the highly popular series "Miami Vice ", on which the song aired, only made this entry that much hotter. As the lyrics state, "You see it in the headlines, you hear it everyday ". So true, making the timing of this release perfect. Somewhat ironic to note that co- writer Jack Tempchin fronted The Funky Kings (see above), with Jules Shear after writing the Eagle's hit "Peaceful Easy Feeling ".

BOY MEETS GIRL - Oh Girl (A &M) Took me a little longer to get as excited as Ron Fell about this effort, but after living with it a few extra days, I've become a

believer. This talented pair, originally from Seattle, were signed to Thom Bell's publishing company at one time...easy to hear why.

SHADOW W. DIAMOND - Pass Over The Rainbow (Foonman) Finding a rare gem such as this is truly one of the great rewards of my job. It's a joy to see a guy who'd paid his dues behind the scenes step forward to surprise us on his dazzling debut as an artist. At first I was puzzled, wondering "why is this record different from all other records? Credit producers Musso and Frank for the original recipe!

,' Personal Picks ALBUMS

"Vox Humana" - Kenny Loggins (Columbia) The title track establishes a fast pace for Kenny. Top 40 radio already has it in good rotation and there will be plenty of follow -up material in the album from which additional singles will be chosen Upbeat tracks like NO LOOKIN' BACK, (written with Michael McDonald and Ed Sanford) and I'M GONNA DO IT RIGHT, catch a similar groove. And for variety he throws in a few mellower tracks: I'LL BE THERE (with Bunny & El DeBarge) AT LAST, which includes Philip Bailey and an Earth, Wind & Fire feel and a gorgeous ballad, LOVE WILL FOLLOW, with David Sanborn on sax. Somethin' for everyone and sure to be one of Spring's hottest LP's.

"Breakfast Club Soundtrack" (A &M) Don MacNeil would be proud. (You have to be older than me to know what he meant to radio.) Anyway...once around this turntable and I hear multiple hits. Its leading single, Simple Minds' DON'T YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME) is already over the hump and heading for a single digit future in our Top 40 chart. Besides the Simple Minds track Album Radio is also hot on the Wang Chung track, FIRE IN THE TWILIGHT. Three other favorites of mine have yet to reach the necessary ears, but look for Joyce Kennedy's DIDN'T I TELL YOU, and Elizabeth Daily's WAITING, to spin successfully at 45 RPM's. And don't overlook the duet by Jesse Johnson and Stephanie Spruill, HEART TOO HOT TO HOLD.

"Dream Into Action" - Howard Jones (Elektra) A good mixture of tracks to dance to and tracks to listen to. Until now I hadn't thought of him as such a philosophical lyricist, but rather as a

consumate musician - a master of instruments, beats and melody. Here, however, he dips his quill into a bottle of lyric and ends up scribbling really thoughtful rhetorical prose and eurythmic poetry. He can't be passed -off as "dance ", though his credentials heretofore have boxed him in. "Dream Into Action" opens with his latest single, THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER, looking like a solid Top 40 side. It's followed by a simple rhythm piece, LIFE IN ONE DAY in which he plea bargains for moderation. The rest of the side is incidental melody smothered in headier material, the best of which include: NO ONE IS TO BLAME and ASSAULT & BATTERY. Side two's strongest are: BOUNCE RIGHT BACK and IS THERE A DIFFERENCE.
