Congratulations to Blake and Claudia and we look forward to seeing our State flag and Aboriginal flag fly near our National flag. INNOVATION SHOWCASE A must for educators interested in inspiring student learning and leading change in schools”, is the catch phrase for the Department of Education Innovative Showcase on the 27 th and 28 th November at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre. Walliston PS, in partnership with Marmion PS, will be showcasing our teaching and learning journey in STEM education. A few of our staff will be out next week as they have been invited to interact with other educators and showcase our school. I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff for their efforts in supporting this initiative, especially during a busy term. TRANSITIONS With the end of the year nearly coming to a close, many of our students are about to experience what the next school year will bring. Our year 6 students took part in a transition to high school at Lesmurdie SHS yesterday and all reports from the students was that high school will be a breeze, as Mrs Levy and Mrs Field has taught them everything they need to know. Our 40 new Kindy students for 2020 will take part in an orientation day with Mrs de Saran on Friday 29 th November and on Tuesday 26 th November our 2019 Kindy students will experience a morning with Mrs Westphal and our PP students will be allowed out of the ECE grounds and enjoy a morning with Ms Wake. DATA COLLECTION Over the last couple of weeksstudents in Years 1 -6 have been engaged in ACER testing. This testing is done twice a year and gives teachers data on student achievement not only for their report writing but also to inform and review their teaching programs and practices. It was fantastic to see students being resilient, taking the tests in their stride and trying their hardest. Assessments such as ACER testing, Brightpath for writing and PLD for spelling helps the school to track to see what progress our students are making. A goal for the future, is to share this data with parents. As the software begins to improve, it will become easier to interpret the data and make it accessible to parents. 35 DAYS TO CHRISTMAS Time flys when you have fun! We have a very busy end to the term, and I would like to remind parents to check the term planner and keep up to date with a number of events happening at our school. The social dance next week on Wednesday 27 th November and the Hills Christmas Assembly on Friday 13 th December at 9am are two dates to highlight. Sleep is imperative at this time of the year (for students and parents), as our school days are packed with fun and engagement. SHARING A HILLS CHRISTMAS APPEAL

It is still early but the School will soon be putting up its Christmas tree and the Sharing a Hills Christmas Appeal is about to begin. The appeal just gets bigger and bigger each year. Ap-proximately 350 food parcels and 150 smaller bags to nursing homes were delivered last year impacting on approximately 1200 people in the Kalamunda Shire. The collection by Walliston PS is a significant help in providing for the hampers. I have included a list of the sort of items that are needed for the food parcels. You could add an item or two to the weekly shopping basket or fill a basket specifically for this cause. If you have any of the following items please feel free to bring it to the front office or next week to the library to be put under the Christmas tree. The Year 6 leaders will be there to welcome you, hopefully with a smile and a kind word between 8.30am and 9am at the new library, every school day until the 12th December…………. The collection will then be handed over to a Sharing a Hills Christmas volunteer at the assembly on the 13th. Thank you

On Thursday the 7th of November, Walliston Primary School celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day along with hundreds of schools across Australia. Modern, busy lifestyles and pressures are resulting in children spending less time outside. Nature Play WA started celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day in 2017 to highlight the benefits for children to learn and play outside. The pre- primary class along with some senior primary students, were invited by Nature Play WA to attend the inaugural Outdoor Classroom Day at Perry Lakes in 2017. Last year was the first year that we celebrated it as a school. This year, classes at Walliston headed outdoors for some of their learning, proving that whatever can be learned inside can also be learned outside. It also has many benefits for children’s engagement and emotional well-being. Activities included class spelling outside, STEM activities, graphing the most popular coloured cars, measuring heart rates before, during and after exercise, persuasive writing outside about whether it was better to learn inside or outside, phonics outdoors, Investigation Time in our bush area surrounding the senior oval and mud play! The outdoors is an often neglected “classroom” with many opportunities and benefits. It was wonderful for students across the school to experience a different way of learning on the day.
