Get the most out of PMI.org (Part 2 of a series)

Last month at the annual leadership conference we learned big changes and improvements are coming to PMI.org. PMI has

invested in broad improvements to the website that we will begin to see in the near future. Changes will include better search

functionality to locate items on the website.

Where is the info and how to I get to it is a major focus?

Our knowledge base available with our annual membership has a huge amount of great data. But you have to be able to locate

it. As the improvements roll out we will update you on what we see and learn.

This month, let’s take a look at the Knowledge Center Tab allot which is housed within this tab that you will find resources to get

your job done.

- Ever needed a form and had to make it from scratch? Next time check out the Tools & Templates section for a free

resource you can download and use.

- Ever needed to review a concept or technique? Check out the On Demand Webinars or check out the EReads found in

the Virtual library or newsletters.

Within this tab you will find Highlighted articles and information on Leadership and personal growth.

- Voices – Learn from real world projects including last year’s project of the year.

- Blogs with info from PMs in various industries.

My Message Center ‘Let Our People talk…’ This is a new section that I have introduced in our monthly newsletter so that YOU can voice your idea of something that may

prove to be worthy of EVERYONES attention. I hope you all enjoy it and learn a bit from all the great input provided.

Timely Tips… ‘LEAN’ In December it is hard to think Lean with all the pumpkin pies and other goodies; however, this month is also the month for giving. You can give back to a charity in many ways. To make the most from monetary donations, a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt could work with a charitable organization on and improvement project to improve the effectiveness of the utilization of their funds. This LSS Green Belt project could be used for certification.

Here is PMI Houston December question. Test ‘LEAN’ your knowledge.

At the North Pole, what is the difference between a Project Manager (PM) and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB) ?

a.) If Santa Clause were the Project Manager (PM), he would consider risk in his travels from such items as extreme snow, sick reindeer, and roof-top not being able to support his sled.

b.) If Santa’s primary supplier of toys was a LSS Green Belt, he could use the DMAIC process improve his production process.

c.) During Christmas Eve, the elves would count the cookies that Santa received during his deliveries and make sure everyone gets an equal share of the goodies.

d.) After Christmas, Santa Clause (PM) and the elves (LSSGB) will review how well the delivery went and look for improvement opportunities for next year.

e.) All of the above

*Answer and explanation to the answer are at the end of this newsletter.

Message from the VP of Communications:

On behalf of PMI Houston Communications team, I would like to take the opportunity to honor the service given to the chapter and our members, this past year, by all the volunteers that made this effort possible.

In particular, I would like to point out the unique contribution by our past Communications Director, Erika Valencia, to all of the new initiatives pioneered by the communications team this year. Although her plate was full when she decided to offer her assistance, due to those commitments and long term career goals, Erika has politely declined to continue her role going forward. I'm thankful for the short and dynamic time we had her in our team and wish for her to achieve all of her career objectives.

Consecutively, I have the privilege to welcome a great friend and teammate who will be serving as our incoming Director of Communication, Justin Coe. Justin has been a tremendous help in the last month as he has literally 'hit the ground running' and has quickly and effectively mastered the chapters communications instruments and most importantly, contribute his valuable knowledge and experience with the team. I definitely look forward to working and growing side by side to this energetic fresh talent that has decided to give back not only to the profession but to the Houston's PMI chapter members.

Answers Let Our People Talk- Timely Tips ‘LEAN’ Answer

Question: At the North Pole, what is the difference between a Project Manager(PM) and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB)?

Timely tips “LEAN" answer is ….. (E)

For the following reason: a). Before Christmas, Santa Clause the Project Manager, works with the team to create schedule that considers delivery risks.

b.) DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) are the 5 phases a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt would use to improve a process.

c.) Every home leaves the Santa crew a thank you gift. It is important for everyone on the team to share the gift.d.) When the project has been completed, a timely review must be made so Christmas will run efficiently again next year.

BONUS QUESTION:  During Christmas who is in charge of children's letters to Santa?

BONUS ANSWER:  PMs let the LSS Green Belt listen to the voice of the  customer and analyze the best way for it to get there.  Once that's done, PMs make it happen.  HO HO HO!
