of events, masterminded by Ms Morin, at school to mark the day.

See below….

Wilson’s School

Badminton Club

The season will soon be upon us and all the players are training

hard. The school has now been designated an Academy school

by Badminton, England, and the top 6 boys from years 8,9,10,11

and 12 all receive extra specialist coaching. This means

attending one morning session 7.30 –8.15 am and one lunch time

session each week, plus the club session and matches. The

school also has employed 2 extra coaches on Mondays and

Fridays after school. The school club runs on Monday 3.30 until

6pm for years 7 & 8 and on Fridays for Years 9 and above, The

school is now the home for Chadacre Badminton club, one of the

top clubs in the county at senior level. The club provides the

opportunity for the older boys to experience high quality play

and Surrey County League matches. If there are any parents out

there who are good players, the club welcomes new members on

a Thursday evening 7.15 – 9.45pm on 4 courts. If you want to

play in the school club, particularly Year 7 pupils, please see Mr

Molyneux.

Weekend Fixtures Wilson’s vs Glenthorne all teams at home. There will be

refreshments available in the new Sixth Form Café. We will be

selling a variety of hot and cold food on a trial basis. Cashless

catering cards or cash will be accepted.

CCF The Combined Cadet Force had its first parade of the year last

Tuesday. It was encouraging to see seventy Year 9 recruits on

parade. It is not too late for boys to join they should come to the

playground at 15.30 on Tuesday 19th

September and expect to be

dismissed at around 17.30.

School Play There are still plenty of parts available for boys to perform in the

school play. Any in Year 10 and above who would like to

participate should see Mr Shaw urgently. The ability to sing is

most welcome but there are some non-singing parts available as

well. The script can be perused by going to the school network

shared resources area and looking in the folder Drama/Poppy.

Congratulations to Hikaru

Harazawa 11H who was amongst the 10 highest scoring candidates

nationally in the summer 2006 Japanese GCSE examination.

Hikaru studied independently for the examination.

preparation! The only equipment required will be an HB pencil

and rubber. Normal timetable will resume at Period 4.

SPECIALIST COLLEGE IN THE

ARTS

Recently designated as a “high performing specialist school” in Mathematics and Computing, Wilson’s has now been invited to develop plans to take on an additional rôle as Specialist College in the Arts. The new specialism, which will become effective in the New Year, will bring in substantial new resources to support English, Media and the Arts in the school. We will also be developing a community programme with a strong Media focus.

After an internal competition amongst Upper Sixth economists,

Joe Ruiz, Lawrie Harper-Simmonds, Howard Hume, Saad Sattar

English Schools X-

Country: First

Round

The first round of the English Schools Cross Country was held at

Wilson’s this year. Many thanks to the sixth form and year 11

pupils who acted as officials and “hared” races.

The Junior team won their race comfortably with Jordan

Maurice taking first place. Superb runs from the rest of the team

ensured that Wilson’s were placed first overall a long way ahead

of the rest. This was a combined Year 7 and 8 team, with four

year 7 runners, making this an outstanding performance. The

Year 9 and 10 boys had a tough act to follow, but George Roffey

and Miles Collin finished in the top ten. After the first lap the

situation did not look promising, with four schools ahead of

Wilson’s; but Jon Mapp and Darren Spain managed to overhaul

enough of the opposition to steal the last qualification place from

Tiffin by one point! Well done.

Both teams now progress to the regional final with hopes of a

place in the National Final.

New Rewards

System

We’ve been looking at ways to improve the ways in which we

acknowledge, celebrate and reward the good contributions that

students make to the school. The school is launching an exciting

new rewards system to operate in the Lower and Middle Schools

which will ‘go live’ from next week. Details of the scheme can

be found in the parents’ handbook on the website:

www.wilsonsschool.sutton.sch.uk

CCF Camp During half-term one hundred and three cadets from Wilson’s

attended camp on St Martins Plain. All our Training Company

recruits (Year 9) passed off as qualified cadets, entitled to wear

the cap badge of The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment or the

Royal Air Force, with Tim Hoe winning best recruit Army

Section and Jack DiLizia winning best recruit RAF Section.

In Senior Company (Year 10) all boys passed their Self Reliance

Test and Jake Marshall was awarded best on course.

The NCOs (L6 and U6) have been working with the junior

cadets since September and special mention should go to Cpl

Robert Smith for his work with Drill and Turnout and to Cpl

Robert Law for his instruction of the self-reliance cadre. Many

thanks also to Sgt Diluka Karunaratne for stepping in as

Senior NCO whilst colleagues were on the school trip to Russia.

PTA The PTA are still looking for prizes for the Christmas raffle

small or large. All donations gratefully received. Please contact

Cathe Sanders at [email protected] or Mrs Mitchelmore

at the school.

Matthew Kasoar U62, William Hogg L66, Alex Barrell 11C, and

narrowed the gap. By the final round of questions, both teams

were neck and neck. The match was decided on the tense race

Contact Numbers We are still having difficulties contacting parents when we have

a boy who is taken ill or has had an accident. Please would

parents make sure that the School office has up to date work and

mobile numbers. If possible please leave us with an alternative

contact name and number if you are not contactable at work

Wimbledon Ball

Boys

The following boys have been selected to be Wimbledon ball

boys next summer. Jack Heller 10G, Joe Rifaat 10H, Ross

Graham 10H, Jonathan Mapp 10C, Anthony Childs 10C, Jack

Carter 10G, Jack Ambrose 10C, George Panther 10C, Cameron

Smith 10C, Miles Collin 10S and Jonathan French 10G. Many

congratulations on their selection.

Pay Phone We are considering removing the school’s pay phone, which is

used very little now that most pupils who need to contact parents

have mobile phones. The phone is very expensive to maintain

and we think the money could be better used elsewhere. In

emergencies boys would be allowed to use the school phone

system. We would like to know if there are any pupils or parents

who rely upon pupils’ access to the school pay phone.

Issue 21 24th November 2006

The first Annual House Jelly Eating competition was held on a gloomy, overcast day

brightened only by the mounds of jelly in lurid house colours. In teams of four,

students competed relay-style, plunging their faces into plates of jelly, mastering the

art of Jelly Hoovering in a strictly no-implements affair. Congratulations to Brecon

and Camberwell who won the overall competition and to 8B who raised the most

money for charity. Thanks to the Year 8 charity representatives, jelly-servers and

prefects for their organisation and to the staff at the canteen who supplied the jelly.

May this prestigious event be repeated next year!

Learn to Earn Day Last Friday, year 8 participated in their Learn To Earn day. The event

was hosted by Young Enterprise using representatives from the world

of business and the boys spent the day working in teams, investigating

and giving presentations on a variety of topics.

These topics included the boys defining what success meant to them- a

wide range of responses, but larges houses and Mini Coopers seemed

to feature heavily! They then looked at possible careers and then

matched their likely monthly expenditure on their dream lifestyle to

their likely salary. As you can imagine the two didn’t often match!

They finished the day by participating in mock interviews to get a taste

of what they may face in the future.

The day was a great success and the boys responded with a great deal

of enthusiasm. The feedback from Young Enterprise was extremely

positive and they said that our students were “ a delight to work with”.

Thanks to all the staff involved in the event.

PSHE Lessons Year 7

will be collected by the borough and sent to the developing world for

re-use. In return the school will receive £5 for every sack of shoes and

£1.25 for every sack of clothes. The shoes must be usable and in

At the end of term we are saying goodbye to Mrs

McLoughlin who is leaving to pursue a career in

counselling having worked at Wilson’s for twenty-

three years. Appointed originally in the Modern

Languages Department in 1983, Mrs McLoughlin has

also for many years taught History throughout the

school. Her other major role has been as Charities

Coordinator and under her supervision boys have

raised many thousands of pounds for charities such

as Kenyan orphans, Multiple Sclerosis and the

Pakistan Earthquake Fund. Boys and staff will

perhaps remember Mrs McLoughlin most for the

many and varied school trips she has organised over
