Tena Koe whanauThe final week of term 2 is uponus next week and hopefully, aswe have now passed the middleof the year, and we wind uptowards the holidays and term 3,hopefully the weather will

become a bit more settled for us.A little warmer would be nicetoo.I will be absent for thefollowing week and for all of week 1 of term 3. During myabsence, Mrs Suddaby will bethe big chief, with Miss P as her very able sidekick. I have it onvery good authority that theschool will continue to functionas normal and that the sky willnot fall in.You will receive your childsreport via mail in the first week of the holidays. If you have anyquestions about it, arrange atime to see your childs teacher,in week two, at a time that suits

them too. The first week of theterm is always busy for us, so donot expect us to just dropeverything on a whim or toknow the answers to everythingoff the top of our heads. Makean appointment!

    PrincipalsCommentary:

school uniforms and I see thatthe message hasnt got through

properly. The next step that Iwill take is to consider issuingconsequences to studentsdirectly from the behaviour management handbook, such asextra work, detentions, lines, or heaven forbid, rubbish duties,

and on that last one; yes, legallywe can. If consequences donot have the desired effect thenone of the few options left will

be to escalate the consequencesto stand-downs, suspension or exclusion. Basically, if youdont want to wear our uniform,we do not want you at thisschool. For those of you thatthink this a little heavy handed, Idisagree. We are a uniformschool and we all take pride inwearing our uniforms and I donot want that to change. As theschool has a uniform policy in

place, we are legally within our rights and quite able to enforceit if students continually or repeatedly disregard the rules. If you as a parent have a

problem with the uniform itself, then the correct approach wouldin the first instance be to let meknow, preferably in writing, sothat I could consider andrespond to your concerns, or sothat I could raise it with theBoard of Trustees. Those

parents that make the effort and pay the uniform costs are beingdisadvantaged by those that aredeliberately ignoring the rules. If you are having difficultysourcing uniform, throughhardship or availability, ask atour office or make a time to

come and see me and discuss it.So far, no-one has, so I feelquite justified in mentioningenforcing the rules.

Treating people fairlyI have a personal policy of NOTtreating my students equally.

None of my students learnexactly the same, nor do any of them advance at exactly thesame rate. None of them look

exactly the same, and none of them behave exactly the same,so why would I treat themexactly the same.I prefer to treat people fairly. For example, my expectations

of a year 7 student are probablygoing to be a lot higher than for a new entrant student, academically and behaviourally.Within each age group I havediffering expectations, for learning and for behaviour, andwhat may be suitable for one asa consequence, may not be for another, depending on what my

expectations are. Myexpectations are based on my professional judgement; myknowledge of how kids learnand develop; all those thingsthat I am trained for; and also onmy experiences as a parent.I believe in treating peoplefairly. I believe that every one of my students has the right tolearn and that no one person hasthe right to interfere with thelearning of another. I also

believe that reporting to parentsshould be honest and

purposeful. I believe that if I andmy staff are going to spendhours and hours of our own

personal time creating reportsabout your children, then thattime should be well spent andthe reports should be honestreports about where each childis at, academically, physically, spiritually and mentally. Our

reports are also based onfairness and they are specificallytailored to each individual child. What that means is that youcannot compare apples withapples, so do not compare onechilds report with another asthe comparison is irrelevant. The comments on your childsreport are about your child. If someone else has a report withsimilar comments, or vastly

different comments andexpectations, it is completelyirrelevant. We havent had very good rolemodels for fairness in the publicdomain lately, with some of theexamples that have played outacross the media over the past 6months. For example, I stillthink that the way that Mr DotCom has been treated andcontinues to be treated isdisgraceful, whether he is aninternet crook or not, as even inthis country one of the

    The Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the king dom of heaven.Blessed are the meek; for they shall possess the land.Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice; for they shall be filled.Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy.Blessed are the clean of heart; for they shall see God.Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called the children of God.Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice sake; for theirs is thekin dom of heaven.

asic rights we have is protectionnder the law. Everyone agreeshat the search and seizure of hisouse was illegal, yet theovernment has not returned allf his assets to him and theyontinue to publicly implicateim. That is not fair. The searchnd seizure was illegal andherefore not fair. The

onfiscation of his assets after thelegal search is illegal AND notair. The retention of his assets islegal and not fair and having the

Government grovelling to assisthe FBI on our sovereign soilerpetrate an illegal act is notnly illegal and unfair, itsownright embarrassing.

note that the governmentsreatment of a number of schoolsn their recent announcements of losures has also been lacking inairness. At least one school wasefused access to the data that the

ministry claimed was the basis for losure. That is unfair. Not aood example of theollaboration that the Minister xpects within her schools either.

The rumour millRumours abound in small townsike blades of grass. Rumoursbout schools and students

amilies often happen becausechools are usually the focal point

within some communities.Recently, one such rumour doinghe rounds was about aeighbouring school and itsalling roll. I dislike rumoursntently as I have seen howestructive they can be. Peoplehat have nothing better to dohan gossip and spread rumourshould really get a life. I would

ot like to see any of the schoolsround this town become the

targets of nasty speculativemalicious gossip.I therefore happily put on recordthat I believe whole-heartedlythat all of the schools in theWaimate district are very goodschools - absolutely. I also canhappily state that I believe thatthe quality of education at anyone of these schools is superb and

I firmly believe that everyone thatworks at any one of theseschools, including ours, is therefor the purpose of improvingacademic outcomes for the kids ateach school. I think that our weetown and district is exceptionallywell served by a very dedicated, competent and enthusiastic bunchof teachers, staff and principals.(Our school is of course the bestof a very good lot!) There are

points of difference between eachschool, which should be why theschools are chosen by the parents, not because some person with a

bee in their bonnet didnt gettheir own way and wants to stick the knife into the school theyhave just left. Thats not beinginformative, thats justdistasteful. People that spreadrumours really need to have thecourage of their convictions andsay it to those that they are

talking about, rather than behindtheir backs.Do not speculate about the livesof others either until you knowthe full facts. Often we hear bits

of juicy gossip about whatsomeone else is doing and thenthe story gets blown out of shapeand proportion. Dont buy intothat stuff. Rely only on what youget from the horses mouth. If you need to know so badly whatsomeone else is up to, ask thehorse directly. If the smell isunbearable, its because horses

eat grass and dont care whatyou think about their breath.Often kids in the playground willsay something about someoneelse that they think, rather thanwhat they know and thensomeone else picks it up and thewhole rumour morphs into acompletely unrealistic version of a non-truth. Sometimes kidscome to school bearing newsthat they have overheard athome, only to be put straight bysomeone else that has heardsomething similar. In my classfor example, we try and focus onfacts, not innuendo or inferenceand if students have news, theyare encouraged to back it up withdates, locations and names, etc.

Just my views folks. Dont beoffended.

Wasnt that an absolutely fantastic performance last week at the High School by our students. Please check out our facebook page to see a great video of their performance. Welldone to Mrs Suddaby and Miss P. for their efforts in coaching, training and preppingthe students.

During weeks 1-3 of next term we will be working hard out on the Ka Toi performance. This is not at the expense of reading, writing, RE or maths. Thesesubjects are still taught and integrated across all learning areas as well.We will need to get an idea early next term of the best way of travelling, ie: parentscars, versus taking a bus there and back.
