Literacy without borders by Pam Rettig January 17 - February 23 2013

Deep winter takes gallery visitors to Nigeria and Tanzania Through the collected photographs and stories of Bismarck teacher professor and researcher Pam Rettig we get a glimpse into the daily life of African students Rettig who was born and raised in western North Dakota has dedicated her life to education and literacy

Literacy Without Borders documents Rettigrsquos work in Africa and has particular relevance to Jamestown The project was funded in-part by the North Dakota Reading Association (NDRA) and the local chapter The Prairie Reading Council whose fund raising efforts were instrumental in establishing the first traveling library in Nigeria The book mobile was purchased and books are now able to reach children in rural villages and towns

The Arts Center hosts this documentary exhibition to celebrate Februaryrsquos Black History month and emphasize the importance of literacy to the ldquoartsrdquo of writing and communication The Arts Center is partnering with the Prairie Reading Council to build awareness for the upcoming NDRA annual conference This yearrsquos theme is ldquoLiteracy is Legendaryrdquo and will feature four nationally recognized authors

Everyone is welcome to attend the conference registration information will be available in the gallery Proceeds generated from participation help to fund projects like the Nigerian Book Mobile as do any sales of Pam Rettigrsquos photographs

Literacy refers to the ability to read for knowledge write coherently and think critically about the written word

Nigeria ndash Money raised by the North Dakota Reading Association paid for the chairs that these students are sitting upon The chairs are important because the plastic legs are difficult for the fire ants to climb These students appear to be much like early learners in any setting until you look closer and see the extended bellies from a malnutrition disease called Kwashiorkor School appearance is important It is noteworthy that each mother is at the waterrsquos edge washing those uniforms nightly

Gallery Presentation with Pam Rettig Sunday February 3 2013 100 pm (backup snow day February 10th)

The exhibit and Rettigrsquos presentation is appropriate for all agesmdashdonrsquot expect a lecture but a humorous and engaging hour of storytelling and view of Africa unlike any you would find in a tour book Please join us for an enjoyable Sunday afternoonndashPam will bring some African tea for you to try and some unusual artifacts from her travels
