Pupil Free Day
Our leadership team leads the educational
professionals in our school and inspires students, staff
and members of the community to continually
enhance the learning of all and to secure the best
possible learning outcomes and wellbeing of all
students. Our school values underpin our quality
inclusive practices, high expectations and the
promotion of positive partnerships between school and
home.
At our Pupil Free Day on August 2nd, our staff engaged
in designing differentiated teaching, learning and
assessment tasks focused on improving student
learning outcomes in Literacy and Numeracy. We
explored the Australian Curriculum Progressions that
are used to inform our students’ SMART goals in Oral
Language and Mathematics and we reviewed our
student evidence/assessment folders. Our professional
reading and discussions centred on Best Advice
Numeracy papers: Beliefs and Attitudes about
Mathematics and Conceptual Understanding –
Number and Algebra. This term’s site improvement
plan focus is Numeracy – designing rich assessment
tasks which will be moderated for increased
consistency of teacher judgement across the site and
developing our students’ ability to confidently use
mathematical language to problem-solve and to seek
a range of creative solutions.
Numeracy Expo
Our students invite families to attend our Numeracy
Expo on Thursday 12 September 3.30-4.30pm. Being
held in classrooms and specialist teaching and
learning areas, students will showcase their learning
and teachers will demonstrate research-based and
diverse ways of teaching Mathematics and Numeracy
across the curriculum. Our students are keen to share
their learning with you, so save the date!
Planning for 2020
Term 3 is the time we begin planning for the
following year. Enrolments are critical to our
staffing formulae so in order to support forward
planning, please contact Julie via email
[email protected] or ring the
school office on 8337 2050 to inform us if you
will be leaving our school community next
year. It would be most helpful if we received
this information by Wednesday 4 September.
Class placements forms for 2020 help to inform
our decisions regarding next year’s class
configurations along with the student, teacher
and leadership input. These are attached to
this newsletter.
Book Week and Book Fair-
Reading is my secret power
During Book Week, our students will celebrate
their learning in a variety of ways which will
allow them to enjoy a range of CBCA
(Children’s Book Council of Australia) shortlisted
books. Teachers will share their favourite stories
with other classes and engage in daily reading
and book reviews of Book Week Picture books.
Our Ambassadors are organising some
lunchtime activities for the younger students
including making paper capes and drawing
self portraits. On Friday, students are invited to
dress up as their favourite book character or in
a costume that supports the theme Reading is
my Secret Power. We look forward to seeing
families attend our parade during assembly at
9:00am next Friday.
We are also holding a Book Fair during Book
Week. It will be held in the Thiele Building and
books can be purchased during the hours
below. Come along and have a look at the
great titles available.
Opening Times
Monday 19/8—Friday 23/8 3:10-4:00pm
Tuesday 20/8-Friday 23/8 8:30-9:00am

Fathers’ Day Breakfast
It’s the time of the year where we like to
acknowledge our Dads, Grandpas and
other special men who support our
students. Fathers’ Day Breakfast will again
be held in our gym on Friday
August 30 from 7.15-8.30am.
Gold coin donation is
appreciated. Please return
the RSVP slip on the attached flyer. We look
forward to seeing everyone there.
Sushi Special Lunch
On Tuesday 3 September, the canteen is hosting a
sushi lunch. Students can order a choice of 3
flavours and this will be
delivered to the classroom at
lunch time. Each sushi roll will
cost $3 with all orders needing
to be placed by 4.00pm on Wednesday 28 August.
Please see the attached flyer for the Order Form
and further details.
Pastoral Care Worker Review
Tim Wells has been working as the
Pastoral Care Worker (PCW) at
Thorndon Park Primary School for 6 years. The
Schools Ministry Group will shortly be
conducting a review of this role. Gaining
feedback from parents is an important part of
the review.
The information gained from this survey will be:
Read by the Review Panel, including the
Pastoral Care Worker. The panel consists
of representatives from the school, local
churches and Schools Ministry Group
Used to assess and improve the
effectiveness of the Chaplaincy Service in
the school
Attached is a brief survey which we ask families
to complete and return to the office by
Tuesday 27 August. We appreciate your input
and feedback.
New digital newsletter
format coming soon.
Looking forward to sharing
our school and community
news in a different way.

SAPSASA News
In week 10 Term 2, our school competed in the second round of the SAPSASA Knockout
Soccer Competition. A group of year 5/6/7
boys played two matches against Westport PS
and St Josephs. We finished the day winning 1 –
nil against St Josephs before being beaten by
Westport, who eventually progressed to the
next round. I was extremely proud of the efforts
of the boys and the game was played in great
spirits. Well done Arian on scoring our only goal.
Week 1 of this term saw our students
participating in the SAPSASA Basketball
Carnival at Hillcrest Stadium. We entered a
boys and girls team and played in a round
robin competition against 6 other schools. Unfortunately we didn’t have a great deal of
success on the scoreboard throughout the day, however there was significant growth and
improvement from both teams, especially since
many hadn’t played competitive basketball
before. The boy’s team secured a tie and the
girl’s team achieved a win which were
highlights for the teams. It’s really positive to
see the amount of time the students who
competed are now spending at break times
honing their skills and playing basketball
together.
Thank you to all volunteers who made the day
possible.
Swimming
During week 3, students in Reception to Year 5 attended Water Safety lessons at the
ARC at Campbelltown. These lessons are part of the Health and PE curriculum and
teach students familiarity, safety and other basic techniques. Some of the skills the
students practised included :
floating
diving for objects in the water
safe entry to the pool
jumping into deep water safely
the survival stroke
using a Personal Flotation Device
(PFD)
compact landings
treading water
rescuing others using a PFD
survival techniques wearing
heavy clothing
pin drops
What a great week everyone had with some fabulous learning as a
result.
Maths Learning—Mr Spence’s Class
The Year 5 and 6 students in Room 15 spent
Term 2 learning about fractions, decimals
and percentages. They learnt how these
could be used to describe chance, how to
convert between them and how to add and
subtract them. This learning culminated with
the students working in groups to create a Maths board game. Students came up with
the design and rules of the game and created the questions themselves. These questions
needed to be related to the maths learning about fractions,
decimals and percentages. Pictured are
some of the games that the students
created. We are looking forward to
sharing these during the Numeracy Expo
in Week 8.
