We were excited to see the children return after the summer holidays ready for another enjoyable year at Maybury. Welcome to all of our new families, we look forward to working in partnership with you this year.

Promoting a love of reading

We were delighted that lots of children completed the Surrey Library Reading challenge over the summer holidays. We continue to encour-age children. Research shows that reading for pleasure has a positive impact on children’s attainment in reading assessments. Children who read for pleasure have enhanced levels of text comprehension, an increased knowledge of grammar and show improvement in their writing. Before the summer holidays an artist called Rebecca came into school to hold an assembly to ask children about their favourite book charac-ters. Over the summer holidays she came into school to create a wonderful mural in our library to enhance our reading environment. We would like to thank Brewers Decorator Centre in Guildford who kindly donated the paint.

We continue to promote reading at school but are emphasising the importance to our children of home reading. We will be holding several parent sessions this term to share ways to support reading at home. Please ensure you read with your child for 20 minutes everyday, it is amazing to see that by doing this children hear 1,800,000 words per year.

THE END OF YEAR 6

I would like to start by saying a very big welcome to all the old and new children in the Early Years

Foundation Stage. They have all impressed me by settling into school and following new routines and

expectations so happily and easily. The children are now enjoying exploring their new environment and making new friends.

In the ‘Early Years’ at school we aim to support the children in becoming independent learners and part of becoming independent is looking after their own belongings. Therefore please can we ask that you help your child by naming all items that your child brings to school, and check regularly that the names have not worn or fallen off. This includes all items of PE kit and especially school jumpers and

cardigans that the children take off during the school day. We appreciate the cost of buying school

uniform and we are only able to return clothing to children when it is named. Thank you.

Rainbow Fish

Rainbow Fish Class have been spending time at Nursery learning their rules and routines. In their Family Learning Groups they have been thinking about good sitting and good listening so that they can learn new things. The children have been enjoying playing inside and outside and have especially enjoyed playing with the new cars, building with the new block play and bricks and playing with the play dough. All of the children are trying really hard to help at tidy up time, which is fantastic.

Starfish Class

Starfish class have settled extremely well into Maybury. They have had fun exploring their new

environment both inside and outside and coped with lunchtimes really well.

Below are a few photos of the children’s first few days as a ‘Starfish’.

We are looking forward to working with your children this year and continuing their learning journey.

Please do not hesitate to come and talk to me if you have any concerns, worries or you want to share in the delight of your child’s learning.

Welcome back, we hope you had a lovely summer holiday with your family and friends. Thank you to all the parents who attended the Sea Horses and Jellyfish parent welcome meetings last week. Please keep an eye on the website class pages for information and news throughout the year. During Key Stage 1, we aim to support your children in becoming independent learners. Please help to support them by naming all items that your child brings to school, and check regularly that the names have not worn off or fallen off. This includes all items of PE kit and especially school jumpers and cardi-gans that the children take off during the school day. We appreciate the cost you spend on school uni-form and we are only able to return clothing to children which is named. Thank you. Sea Horses Welcome to all the new children in Sea Horses class. Mrs Aitchison teaches on Mondays and Tuesdays and Mrs Horne teaches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The children have settled well into Key Stage 1 and are beginning to work independently at tables as part of their transition from the Early Years.

Jellyfish Class Welcome to all the new children in Jellyfish class. Mrs Roberts teachers on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Butler teaches on Wednesday morning, Thursday and Friday. The children have settled well into Year 2 and are becoming familiar with the routines and expectations. We are continuing to encourage and help the children to become independent and responsible as they enter their final year in Key Stage 1. The children enjoyed a musical workshop with Mr Allen last week when every child had the opportunity to play a new instrument to create the sounds of the ocean.

Key Stage 1 Update

Mrs Butler Deputy Headteacher

Welcome back!

If you attended your child’s parent meeting you will know about our new knowledge organisers which will be sent home during next week. The children need to learn the facts which include key dates and key figures from which they will be learning about this term.

Please can you ensure you child has the correct equipment and uniform so that they are ready to learn. If they need stationery, they can come to the shop on Wednesday at break time.

Manta Rays

Manta Rays have been working hard this month to adjust to the big changes that come with starting Key Stage 2 and a lot of the class can already tie their own ties!

In the first few weeks, we have been learning about Ancient Egypt and the children have been enjoying our book for Literacy: There’s a pharaoh in our bath! We have been using adverbs to describe what has been happening in the story and adding our own knowledge from Topic lessons about tombs, the River Nile and Pharaoh life.

Angelfish Class

The children in Angelfish class have transitioned well from Year 3 to Year 4. They are adapting well to the faster pace and expectation of Year 4 learning. The children spent their first few days in Year 4 learning about their new class name; Angelfish and created some fantastic fact files and artwork about this sea creature.

The children have started learning about the ancient Greeks in our History topic (Meet the Greeks) and enjoyed becoming archaeologists. They had to carefully use their paintbrushes to uncover the artefacts and decide what they thought they were. In Science, the children have started their Animals Including Humans topic by labelling the different parts and learning about the functions of the parts of the digestive system.

Sea Turtles

We have had an excellent start to Sea Turtles class—we have been learning about Sea Turtles and have found out some very interesting facts. Did you know—Sea turtles have roamed the world for almost 110 million years! They are incredibly important to marine ecosystems. We made some fact files to show off our new knowledge which are now displayed in the corridor.

Dolphin class

The children have settled in well and are adjusting to a busy start to Year 6. Please remind your children to complete their reading and home learning daily and return it to school for marking.

We started this year learning about our new class animal and created fact files about them which are displayed in the corridor and in our classroom.

In Literacy we are reading ‘Pig Heart Boy’ as our class text, it is about a boy their age who has a failing heart and he is faced with the prospect of having a pig heart transplant! We have been writing diary entries and debating for and against the use of animal organs in transplants. This book links well with our Science topic which is all about the circulatory system . The children have labelled the key parts and

enjoyed learning about how the blood flows through the heart and lungs through to the rest of their bodies.

A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unau-thorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances :-

1. Pupils identified by police and Inclusion Officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unau-thorised absences.

2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which became law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circum-stances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. In such cases the Headteacher have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised. Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised.

3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered when a pupil has incurred 7 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration.

If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty No-tice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Inclusion Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions

If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on par-ents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice

The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the Local Authority must consider a prosecution in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued.

Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthor-ised absences, for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty No-tice.

If there are two parents, and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penal-ty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days.

Advice and support is available from an Inclusion Officer by contacting your local Education Office as follows :-

You may recall that back in 2016 we signed up to Easy Fundraising, this is a website that gives the school a little bit of commission every time you shop online - you just have to sign up and go to their webpage first before you shop. This is an easy and convenient way to raise money for the school whilst you go about your usual online shopping.

If you are doing the weekly grocery shop, booking flights/holiday or even purchasing car insurance online, please use this site first. It does not cost anything to join and the money donated comes directly from Easy Fundraising and will not be added to your total bill-in fact there are many discount codes available on the site! All the main stores are listed such as Sainsbury's, Amazon and Argos to name but a few.

Since 2016, parents and staff have helped to raise £520.27 for the school! If you haven't already signed up to Easy Fundraising, please follow the link below to find out more information and to sign up:

Go to the school website and navigate to the Easy Fundraising page or use the link below:

Our Values – Autumn Term

Friendship: September's value is friendship, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to have friends and how we can be a good friend.

Play with friends outside school.

Read ‘Harry Potter’ by J.K Rowling, ‘Charlottes web’ by E.B White or ‘Elmer and friends’ by David McKee

Independence: October’s value is independence, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Give children opportunities to be independent e.g. getting dressed independently, learning to tie their shoe laces and ties on they own, organising their school equipment

Forget perfection- Accept that children won’t do the task as well as you. Let them try to do things for themselves e.g. Making their own cereal, if the milk spills, show them how to clean it up with-out criticism and assure them it happens to everyone

Read ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett or ‘Nelson Mandela, Long walk to freedom’ by Chris Van Wyk.

Respect: November’s value is respect , some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to show good manners.

Encourage to help with recycling and discuss why we need to respect our environment

Read ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo ‘by Michael Rosen

Appreciation: December's value is appreciation, some sug-gestions to encourage this important value at home are:

Talk about people who are important to us and why we appreciate them.

Talk about people less fortunate than ourselves and think about how we could help them.

Read ‘Owl babies’ by Martin Waddell
