MARIA Walsh has travelled over 65,000 miles, more than the earth’s circumference, since becoming the Rose of Tralee, and she will travel hundreds more over the coming fortnight in a bid to find the 2015 Rose of Tralee. Maria celebrated Women’s Christmas at The Loop in Cork Airport with RTÉ Host Dáithí Ó Sé where they announced details of her upcoming tour of Ireland which will see her visit schools, charities and iconic landmarks.

On Monday 12th January, travelling in her Kia Soul car, Maria will set off from the home of the Festival’s lead sponsor, Newbridge Silverware to visit 32 counties in 15 days to encourage young women to take part in a life-changing event. It’s never been easier to enter the Rose of Tralee - online at www.roseoftralee.ie or by following the links from Facebook and Twitter. An estimated 1000 women aged between 18 and 27 will follow through on their Rose of Tralee applications and take part in selection events across Ireland and in 11 countries around the world this year.Maria Walsh, who became the 56th International Rose of Tralee last August, said: “I never expected to hear Dáithí call out ‘Philadelphia’

in the Dome and to be honest, I can’t really find one word impactful enough to share how extraordinary it has been ever since. It has indeed been a busy few months meeting people on my travels to Ireland, India and South Africa and on all of these journeys I have shared my wonderful experiences of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. I’m looking forward to welcoming many more people into the Rose of Tralee family over the coming weeks and months.” The 2015 Rose of Tralee will win the a treasure trove of Newbridge Jewellery and Homeware from the lead sponsors, Newbridge Silverware, a World Travel Prize valued at €25,000 from The Loop at Dublin and Cork Airports and she’ll drive a Kia Soul car for the year of her reign, courtesy of Kia Motors Ireland and McElligotts Kia, Tralee. 60 Roses who will be selected at their local county, city or national event will go forward to represent their Rose Centres at the Rose of Tralee Regional Festival in Portlaoise, Co Laois in May. A total of 32 Roses will grace the stage in the Dome during the two televised selection nights as part of the Rose of Tralee International Festival in August. She will travel to Belarus with Chernobyl Children’s International in February, New York & Washington DC in March and down under to Australia in May. The 2015 Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from Friday 14th to Tuesday 18th August. Full details on how to enter the Rose of Tralee in 2015 are available from www.RoseofTralee.ie, Facebook and Twitter or contact +353-66-7121322.

CHARLIE’S LEAVE TRALEE AFTER 29 YEARS!

Tony and Mary Ennis will retire on Saturday 17th of January having operated their flower shop in Tralee for the past 35 years. Originally from Dublin, they moved to Tralee in 1972 when Fruit Importers of Ireland

transferred Tony to open Munster Fruit and Produce, a banana ripening and distribution plant in Tralee. In the late 1970s Mary studied floristry at the renowned Constance Pry Floristry School in London and together they opened their own fruit and vegetable shop and flower shop in Tralee in 1980. This shop was located in the Leisure Way Arcade in Tralee, now the site of CH Chemist. Two years later they moved to Tralee Shopping Centre, formerly Latchfords and joined many of the shops in the centre such as The Shoe Bar, The Knitting Centre, Burger King, Willie Ryle, Dallas, Ger Power Sports, Hugh Culloty Electrical, Rex’s Bakery, Mick O’Meara Photography, Smithies Coffee Shop, Downtown Deli, Saxones Shoes, and Bennetton. In 1985 they moved the flower shop to Russell Street now Jasmine and later Rock Street, opposite the Brogue Inn where the Horan’s Health now is. Tony opened his fruit and vegetable store on the site of their existing premises in Market Place, Tralee. Situated on the site of Kingdom Livestock, Tony’s main customers were the farming community. Tony says “I had a fantastic relationship with the farming community, my shop became a meeting place for the farmers and their families”. Together they

had four children, Elisa, Suzanne, Mark and Janice. Elisa their daughter studied floristry in the Welsh College of Horticulture and joined the family business. She went on to complete her Society of Floristry N.D.S.F and represented Ireland in the Chelsea Flower Show on the Interflora team in 1993. In the late 1990s, the Mart moved to their existing location in Mounthawk and in 2003, Mary joined Tony in their newly built shop in the Market where they concentrated solely on their flower business. Together they built up a very successful floristry business as an agent for Interflora while at the same time educating their four children through college. Speaking to Tony and Mary about their decision to retire they said “it’s time, we put the shop up for sale and sold it. We’ve worked very hard in the last 35 years, working 6 days a week, our children are now raised and have families of their own so now it the time why we can, to make time for ourselves to spend time with our grandchildren and please god, enjoy our retirement together. As two Dubs, Tralee and Kerry has been very good to us, it gave us a livelihood and helped educate our children. It has also given us three fabulous granddaughters in Castlegregory and two grandsons in Derryquay, Tralee a legacy we are very proud of. Mary says “we are very fortunate to have built up such a successful business in Tralee. This is down to the tremendous support and assistance of our children who helped us build up the business and to our very loyal customers who have continued to support us over the years. We will open after the Christmas on the 27th of December and will be open with a Retirement Sale until we close on Saturday the 17th of January. We would like to thank all our customers and our business neighbours and friends for supporting us through our tremendous 35 years in business. We will retire with many fond memories”.

Hi James,

I was thinking leaving my current employment and starting my own business in 2015, however costs would be an issue for me. Any advice.

Happy new year to all readers.

There are a number of tax based ways of raising finance. The following are the most popular.

Employment and investment incentive (EII) The EII scheme allows an individual investor to obtain tax relief on investments in certain Irish companies up to a maximum of €150,000 per annum in each tax year up to 2020. Relief is initially available at 30%. A further 11% tax relief will be available where it has been proven that employment levels have increased at the company at the end of the holding period (heretofore three years) or where evidence is provided that the company used the capital raised for expenditure on research and development. The maximum investment by all investors in any one company or group of companies is currently €10m subject to a maximum of €2.5m in any one twelve month period. In his Budget speech the Minister indicated that the 3 year holding period would be increased by 1 year and the amount of finance that can be raised by a company or group of companies under the EII will be increased to €5m annually subject to a lifetime maximum of €15m. Investment in the management and operation of nursing homes, medium-sized enterprises in non-assisted areas, and internationally traded financial services that are certified by Enterprise Ireland, will now qualify under the scheme. The changes are subject to approval from the European Commission. Start-up relief for entrepreneurs The SCS will be renamed as the start-up relief for entrepreneurs (SURE) and is extended to individuals who have been unemployed up to 2 years. The SCS provides tax relief to an individual who leaves employment (or an unemployed individual) to start their own business. The relief allows such an individual to claim a refund of tax on previous income for up to six tax years in respect of investment in the new business.

A kerryman is concerned that the place he works at could be safer and his employer is very open to making the workplace as safe as possible for all the workers and himself. How should they go about it?

HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE.The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is a great port of call to get information on health and safety. The provide a simple tool in the Be Smart.ie tab which allows employers in conjunction with their employees follow the three simple rules of health and safety. 1. Do a hazard assessment setting out all potential hazards in the workplace, then 2. Assess the risks attached to these hazards whether they are small medium or large and 3. Then set out what you are going to do about it in writing. The Employer would usually put in place a safety statement which must be updated as necessary.

The Be Smart.ie tool has lists of hazards already laid out for multiple different types of workplaces and helps one work through the three steps. The Website www.hsa.ie also has a multitude of posters and safety awareness information that can be made available to workers. One specially useful one is the WINTER READY BOOKLET which is a great reminder to all of us on how to be prepared for fierce weather conditions.

Health and Safety Humour: In case of fire exit the building before tweeting about it!

Local Intreo offices and local social welfare branch offices in Kerry are accepting applications for the new Back to Work Family Dividend from this week onwards. The new Dividend helps parents move from welfare to work by allowing them to retain the €29.80 Qualified Child Increase payment that they previously would have been lost in

the event that they secured work. Labour TD Arthur J Spring said: “This is a real example of how we are making it easier for people to return to the workplace, and making the recovery real for people in Kerry. I am pleased that, as of this week, INTREO and local social welfare branch offices are accepting applications so that local parents can begin to avail of this crucial financial support.

“As a Labour representative, it is a key priority for me that people in our community start to feel the effects of the economic recovery in their pockets. The Dividend is one such example of how we are attempting to achieve this, while others include the increase to Child Benefit, and the cut of 1% in the top rate of income tax – both measures which take effect this month. It’s important that we continue to help people share in this hard-won recovery.

“In the meantime, I would encourage any local parent who has gained employment and will qualify for the Dividend to call to their local INTREO or local social welfare branch offices in Tralee, Killarney, Kenmare, Listowel, Dingle, Caherciveen and Killorglin so that they can avail of this crucial support. Applications are being accepted from this week and payments will be made following the encactment in April 2015. However, all eligible claims will be backdated fully to the date of application.”

The application fees have been reduced for an internal review of a decision by a body on your request and for a review of the decision by the Office of the Information Commissioner. The new fees (which do not apply in the case of personal information) are as follows:

• Internal review, €30 (€10 for medical card holder)• Review by Information Commissioner, €50 (€15 for medical card holder)

You may be charged for the time spent finding and retrieving records, and for any copying costs. You will not normally be charged for personal records.

Under the revised scheme, if the cost of search, retrieval and copying is €100 or less, no charge is applied. If the cost exceeds €100, the full charge applies. You cannot be charged more than €500. If the estimated cost is more than €700, the body can refuse to process your request, unless you refine your request to bring the cost below this limit.

The new FOI Act widens the scope of the scheme to all public bodies, unless specifically exempt. It also allows the Government to include other bodies that get significant public funds. Under the Act the bodies must publish a wider range of information about their activities than was previously required.

So says Susan Quirke of Mounthawk Montessori School who recently started to jointly promote the littleknown Government incentives that are available to certain parents/families where childcare costs can be fully or partly funded by the Government . “Yes , I am working on this initiative along with Maureen

Quirke of Maureens Preschool & Childcare Centre in Rock St and Helena and Joelene from Busy Bees Nursery /AfterSchools “ says Susan .“The costs of running a household nowadays are very expensive and there are opportunities for parents to take on a new course /training provided by Fas or VTOS and get ready to return to the workplace ,Often childcare costs hold them back from doing this , so they miss their opportunity “ says Helena . “So we feel we must begin to let people know , on a broader scale, that there are Government incentives in place to ease this financial burden . Often the conditions to qualify are not very difficult , such as starting an educational course with VTOS (which is Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme open to over 21’s) or taking up training with

FAS or simply returning to work after being unemployed. Its all designed to make it easier for people to take up more opportunities”Full day care of your child costs approximately €135 for the week, and Montessori school about €65 for the week and you may qualify for full or partial funding of this amount .Also says Susan “ we provide a FREE private bus service that runs to and from local schools for our after school children “So we want people , who may be interested , in this Scheme, to feel free to contact us at any of the addresses and contact numbers below and we will help them with our advice For further details of our FREE part-time and full-time government funded options please contact Mounthawk Montessori School & Busy Bees Nursery& After-schools, Mounthawk Roundabout , Fenit Road , Clogherbrien Tralee , Susan Quirke Crowley 086-8153757, Helena Wallace Dowling 066-7189964 & Joelene O’Keeffe 086-1620003 & Maureens Preschool & Childcare Centre, 48 Casement’s Avenue, Upper Rock Street Maureen Quirke 087-9449446 & Siobhan 066-7118856 (T&C apply) Full day care from €135 , Nursery €10 per session , Montessori School €65 per week . Bexblah Beauty

RebeccaFollow me!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bexblahbeautyTwitter: @Bexblah / @Bexblahbeauty Instagram: @Bexblah / @Bexblahbeauty

Hello everyone! Happy New Year & welcome back to Bexblah Beauty. 2014 was such a fantastic year and I can only hope 2015 will be just as good if not better. I have so many plans for 2015. I’m going to start a YouTube channel, turn 21 & go to Dublin in September to do a makeup course. It’s all so exciting! This week I thought it would be nice to share with you the makeup that I got for Christmas.

HIGH END MAKEUP HAULWhenever I get makeup for a gift I love getting high end makeup because unlike drugstore makeup, sadly I can’t afford to get it as often as I would like. So this Christmas I got makeup from MAC & Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Mac: The makeup I got from MAC was ordered from Brown Thomas online. Although it was a gift I picked everything out myself, I’m very picky when it comes to shades & spent hours trying to decide what ones to get. In the end I got…Lip Liner in the shade ‘Stripdown’: I’m the biggest nude lip fanatic. I absolutely love the ‘Kylie Jenner’ look and yes, I do overdraw my lips just a little bit! Stripdown is a great mid-toned warm brown liner, perfect for creating nude lip looks. I absolutely love it so far. Lipstick in the shade ‘Spirit’: Again with the nude lip trend. I prefer more brown toned nudes to pink tones and that’s exactly what Spirit is. I pair it with my Stripdown liner and they mix so well together! Eye shadows in the shades ‘Cork’, ‘Woodwinked’ & ‘Cranberry’: Cork is the perfect matte brown shade for everyday wear. I wear brown shadows more than any other colour on my eye and after researching for a while, the shade Cork was a firm favourite with many. Woodwinked is a warm, red-toned brown with a metallic shine. Yes, I bought two brown shadows, but I can tell the difference I swear! Then I also got Cranberry, which, as you can guess from the name is a fabulous red plum pinkish shade. I love adding this shade when I have my brown contact lenses in to really make my eyes pop. Mineralize Skinfinish in the shade ‘Global Glow’: This mineralize skinfinish is amazing. The perfect golden-tan highlight for cheekbones. So pigmented and just, every time I look at it I have to put it on my face. It’s that fab. Fix+: Fix+ is a skin refresher/finishing mist. It is to be applied before or after makeup to freshen up your face. You know when sometimes you finish your makeup and you look a bit, powdery? Fix+ is perfect for fixing that

problem. But what I mainly purchased it for was because Carli Bybel (One of my favourite YouTubers) swears by it to make her eye shadows more pigmented. I was so intrigued. I only bought the travel size one as I wasn’t sure would I like it, but it really does work. Damn you MAC and your pricey products, I’ve been converted!Anastasia Beverly Hills: I discovered this brand in Sephora in San Diego, ah Sephora, and I haven’t used anything else to do my brows since. Anastasia knows brows; the products are to die for! Sadly I did not return to sunny California to purchase what I got from this brand, I got the stuff online at Beautybay.com where everything is extremely reasonably priced and there’s free shipping!Dipbrow pomade in the shade ‘Chocolate’: A smudge-free, waterproof formula that performs as an all-in-one brow product. This creamy, multitasking product glides on skin and hair smoothly to create clean, defined brows. The standout formula works as a brow primer and provides

colour, sculpture, and shading. It is ideal for oily skin and in humid climates. << Got that from the Anastasia Beverly Hills website. I love this product so much. I got it in the shade ‘Dark Brown’ (A shade lighter) in Sephora, and I would still have it now if I wasn’t so carless with my first pot. It dries up really quickly so if you do get this, be sure to put the cover on after use, don’t lose the cover like I did! Brow Wiz in the shade ‘Dark Brown’: Brow Wiz takes the fuss out of eyebrow maintenance & demonstrates that with a little effort you can transform your look. Normally I steer away from brow pencils, but the Brow Wiz is on

a whole other league. It is double ended with the win up pencil on one end and the eyebrow brush on the other. I prefer using the Brow Wiz for the daytime and the Dipbrow for the night. Not one is better than the other it’s just my strange little preference.

So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my little haul/review. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness!

Bexblah Fitness!Hello Everyone! Bexblah Fitness is back! Hope you all had a great Christmas & New Year. Wow did I indulge over Christmas, I just didn’t stop. By the time the 1st of January came I couldn’t wait to get back into a routine. I haven’t touched the weighing scales yet, waiting til Monday. I’m still organising my fitness/gym plan, so hopefully I’ll have that together for you next week. There are so many great gyms in Tralee; I’m really stuck as to which to go for!

BEXBLAH FITNESS 2015

2014 is where it all started and 2015 is where it stays going, bigger & better! I have lots of goals for 2015. Some big some small. I’ve put together a list of my goals for 2015.

1. Lose the ‘Christmas Chubb’: My first goal is to lose the weight I think (I know) I put on over Christmas, which I think is about 8pounds? Maybe less maybe more.

2. DRINK MORE WATER: So far in 2015 I’m really trying to cut back on my consumption of fizzy drinks. Coke Zero is my biggest problem, but so far I think I’ve had like 2 cans, which is insanely good for me.

3. Exercise more: Look at me with my generic run of the mill goals. But hey, I want to exercise more in 2015. I do feel I did do a lot in 2014 it’s just November and December really let me down. Silly appendicitis! I want to become stronger & fitter this year for sure.

4. Lose AT LEAST 2 dress sizes before the 22nd of April: I turn 21 on the 22nd of April. I want to be at least 2 dress sizes smaller by then so I can be fabulous in my party dress!

5. Look decent in a bikini: May isn’t long away and the thoughts of bikini season at the moment are quite terrifying. By the time Summer comes I wanna be bikini ready!

6. FLAT STOMACH: This is one of my all-time goals, this needs to happen sometime throughout 2015. I want a flat stomach.

7. Eat as clean as possible: More fruit, veggies and stuff that my body will thank me for.

8. Get to goal weight/size: I will not tell you what that is right now, but I will say I’m quite the journey away from it. As soon as I reach it, which will be sometime this year. I will be posting a full story with before and after pictures, weight, sizes measurements, the whole lot!

9. Be happy: Cliché as they come but mental health & happiness is key.

RebeccaIf anyone has any questions etc, you can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Fitness’ or email me at [email protected]. Next week will feature any losses, weight or inches, that incur.

EAT FAT LOSE WEIGHTFat is the ultimate nutrient to make us feel satisfied. Fat, more than any other nutrients, makes us feel full. You will have noticed yourself, if you have followed a low fat diet. No matter how large the amount of lettuce, vegetable, fruit and poached fish we consume, we soon feel hungry again. Contrary to sugar and carbohydrates, fat digests slowly so that we continue to feel full long after a meal.

Low fat diets do not make us feel satisfied. We still feel hungry and will be prone to eating more often. This is not a case of will power, it is the body begging for fat in order to survive. If we follow a healthy diet, with a moderate, healthy amount of fat, we will automatically eat less. To lose weight we should consume fat intelligently. The intake of small amounts of healthy fat should be distributed throughout the day to promote a permanent feeling of satisfaction, small snacks containing healthy fats (such as nuts and pumpkin seeds) will ensure you do not feel hungry all the time. “Low Fat” foods are not necessarily low calorie. Many low fat products contain large amounts of sugar, thickening agents, and other additives. Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts, flax seed oil, leafy green vegetables and oily fish (such as tuna, trout, herring, mackerel, sardines)

Take a good quality fish oil supplement every day, such as MOREPA, Eskimo or UDO’S OIL.

Omega-3 FLAX SEED OIL is another oil worth considering; taken daily it can help reduce hunger pangs and cravings for salty and sweet foods. As well as accelerating the metabolism, giving a feeling of fullness and balancing blood sugar levels.

As always, we are happy to discuss the correct oil to suit your specific needs, just call in to any of our stores.Until next time,

Deirdre

A TAXI PASSENGER tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped inches from a shop window. For a second, everything was quiet in the cab. Then the driver said, “Look, mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the living daylights out of me!”The passenger apologized and said, “I didn’t realize that a little tap would scare you so much.”The driver replied, “Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver — I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last 25 years.”

AN ENGLISHMAN , IRISHMAN AND AMERICAN ARE IN A BAR And as they discuss their plans for the next day, they happen to notice a massive, mountain of a man, with no nose. The barman notices them staring and says,”That’s Tiny guys. He’s reeeeeeaaaallll sensitive about the whole missing nose business.” True to form, the Englishman cannot resist on last glance at this peculiar deformity. Tiny sees this and rumbles across the bar with a ROAR, which makes the rafters shed dust. Tiny grabs the Englishman by the throat and slams against the wall.“WHAT’RE YOU LOOKING AT MATE?!” He yells. The Englishman (being very good under pressure) replies with, “Oh nothing old chap, but I cannot help but admire your teeth. You have a fine set of teeth, take care of them or they shall rot like mine,” he opens his mouth and reveals a set of false teeth. Tiny is a bit surprised by this, but in true politeness, he puts the Englishman down, brushes him off and buys him a drink. Ten minutes later, the American cannot help but look one last time. Tiny rumbles across the bar again, repeating the choke slam against the wall and yells,“THE HELL DO YOU WANT BUDDY?!”So the American (also being on the ball tonight) swiftly says, “I can’t help but admire those darn

ears. Those are some mighty fine ears you got there Tiny, you best look after them or you are going to need hearing aids like mine,” So of course the American taps his hearing aids.Tiny, being a true gentlemen, sets him back down, brushes him off and buys him a drink.20 minutes later, the Irishman glances in Tiny’s direction. Tiny races across the bar, and pins him against the wall by his throat, yelling;“AND JUST WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE LOOKING AT?!”So the Irishman, thinking quickly replies;“Well, I cannot help but noticin’ your eyes. You have a fine pair of eyes lad, and you best take good care of them, or you will need glasses like me and that wouldn’t work because you got no nose to rest them on.”

A GUY IS SPEEDING DOWN THE MOTORWAY AND GETS PULLED OVER BY A COP the cop comes up to the man and says, “why were you speeding today sir?” the man replies, “I’m a juggler in a circus, and I’m just trying to get to my next show. I apologize.”the cop looks intrigued, and says “if you can prove to me you’re a juggler, I’ll let you go with a warning.” The man says, “officer, I don’t have my equipment with me, I had to ship it separately.” The officer thinks for a minute, and brings back some flares from his car and lights them. The juggler immediately starts throwing them up and catching them, and the officer is very impressed. Meanwhile, another man driving by pulls over and stops his car. he gets out and immediately walks into the back seat of the police car and closes the door. The officer comes back and says “why did you get into my car?”. The man replies, his words slurred, “i ain’t never gonna pass that new sobriety test you got there”

HYUNDAI REVEALS I20 COUPÉ AND I30 TURBO FOR 2015Hyundai has revealed a selection of new models that will go on sale in 2015.The company’s heavily revised range will feature a new, three-door version of the i20, badged as the Coupé, as well as a turbocharged version of the i30 family car, and a facelifted version of the i40. The i20 Coupé will feature a lower roofline than its five-door sibling along with a sharply forward-swept rear screen, with the aim of giving it a smoother, more purposeful look.Hyundai hopes that this will be enough to attract buyers away from the growing number of ‘boutique’ small cars such as the Mini, Citroën DS3 and Vauxhall Adam. Under the bonnet will sit the same range of engines as the five-door version, and as with that model, a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo will join the line-up next year. Also joining the range will be a facelifted i30 family car. This will be on the receiving end of a smattering of cosmetic tweaks, a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and some new engine options, the most notable of which being a 183bhp 1.6-litre turbo lifted from the Veloster coupé. The new Turbo model will also get 18-inch wheels, sports suspension, bespoke front and rear bumpers, and sports seats with racy red stitching. Less exciting is the mid-life facelift for Hyundai’s big i40 saloon and estate. Both models will get styling revisions, the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a selection of new technology including a revised satellite navigation system. Hyundai says it has also improved ride and handling for the i40 thanks to an improved traction control system and electronically-controlled rear dampers for the estate variant. The new Hyundai models will go on sale at various points throughout 2015.

EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST PUBLISHEDAfter the initial round of voting, next year’s European Car of the Year (COTY) shortlist has been published this week The seven cars are: BMW 2-series Active Tourer, Citroën C4 Cactus, Ford Mondeo, Mercedes-Benz C-class, Nissan Qashqai, Renault Twingo and Volkswagen Passat. The initial long list contained 31 new vehicles (it actually contained 33 cars, but the similarly-based Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 were counted as one vehicle). Next step is judging by the 58 jurors across 22 European countries , in a series of driving events. The winning car will be announced on eve of the Geneva motor show on Monday 2 March 2015.Peugeot 308 Car Of The Year.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW HOPES:The beginning of the year is a time when we all look forward to the coming 12 months and in the sports world it’s no different, even if in reality the sporting world never stops. While most of us we enjoying the Christmas festivities a number of our highly talented sportspersons were still in action and in training. And what a Christmas period is was for a number of them. Bryan Cooper had a festive racing period to remember with a number of wins in Grade A and other races. He has certainly proved that he is back to his best after his broken leg. Michael O’Leary and Giggenstown Stud certainly knew what they were doing when they signed Bryan as their number one jockey. This all bodes well for the rest of the National Hunt season and of course Cheltenham which is just over two months away. Ultan Dillon was another Tralee sportsperson who had a busy Christmas period as he was involved in Connaght’s great run of form, including a win over Munster. Dillon is one of a number of Tralee rugby players who have made the step up to the professional level. Danny Barnes was another ex Tralee player in action in England playing with his club Newcastle Falcons. We also must mention that up to 1800 swimmers took to the waters at Fenit on Christmas Day which certainly must be the biggest such gathering in the country. Thankfully for all it was a nice day and I hope all enjoyed their dip before dinner. We will continue to cover the Tralee Bay Swimming club during the year. Of course there was also very little time for Austin Stacks to stuff themselves with turkey as their big All Ireland semi- final date is fast approaching. Others in action were those involved in coursing and basketball so as I said sport doesn’t stop for Christmas. Hopefully all our Tralee sports person were able to enjoy some of the festivities and spend a bit of time with their families who we must never forget sacrifice almost as much as the sportspersons themselves. Looking forward to 2015 and we will again hopefully be celebrating much success. Firstly the aforementioned Stacks and their quest for All Ireland club glory. They won’t be looking past the semi -final against their Northern opponents. They are working hard in training and we will all be behind them on the day. On the county front the McGrath Cup sees Kerry back in action as the long trek to Croke Park and the retaining of the Sam McGuire gets underway. The minors will begin later in their quest for back to back titles which is probably even more difficult to do than the seniors!. On the cycling world a new Kerry team has been launched. The Moda Kingdom Endurance Sports team is made up of 10 top quality riders and will be competing in all the countries top races. See more on this further down this column. We will all

be having a few euros on Bryan Cooper in the biggest National Hunt meeting of them all across the water and the same on the coursing. Tralee Imperials are flying the flag on the national stage in basketball and are in transition this year. With a new coach and new players they are still very competitive without getting the results but they will always be there or there about. Hopefully St Brendan’s will be able to put a Men’s team into the underage Leagues. However if there was one big wish in basketball it is that we see a return of a National Men’s team. The Blitz in Castleisland and the season in general is not the same without a Men’s team. Those fans of the Hoops will fondly remember the rivalry between the likes of Abbabakra Tralee and St Paul’s Killarney. The reality of the times now though is that it will probably need to be a Kerry side but politics has prevented this from happening. We have plenty of talent but we need the will of those in charge to come together and hopefully by the start of the 2015/16 season we will have a Men’s team in Division 1. On the soccer front Kerry need a win (probably by 2 clear goals) to qualify for the knock out stages of the Oscar Traynor competition. The KDL team has a very good record in the last few seasons without making that final step and bringing home the trophy so maybe this will be the year. On the Schoolboys Girls front both The Park and Tralee Dynamos are still in the National Cup with last 32 clashes set for the last weekend of the month. Hopefully they can go all the way and go one step further than The Park 16’s who reached the final last season. On the local scene The Park and Tralee Dynamos will be contesting the Denny Premier A title with the likes of Killarney Celtic, Listowel Celtic and Castleisland. The big draw here is entry to the Champions Trophy for the winners. However the big development will be off the field – or rather a new field with the KDL putting in a FIFA 4 star All Weather pitch which will radically change the face of the game. Nationally from a Tralee point of view we will again be cheering on the Dennehy brothers as they aim to go one step further with Cork City. Finally on a personal basis we here in the Tralee Advertiser want to continue to bring you the best in local sport and want to hear from any clubs or organisations that we have not been covering. Please ensure you get your notes into us by lunch time on Monday and we will cover your sport in the ‘must read publication’ for Tralee and the surrounding areas.

KINGDOM ENDURANCE SPORTS AND MODA TEAM UP TO FORM NEW CYCLING TEAM:For the last couple of month Pat Dunworth of Kingdom Enduarance Sports in Tralee has been

working behind the scenes to bring the new Kerry cycling team to fruition. The Team Director says this is needed to give our top racers the chance to compete with a number of big and well organised teams that are now dominating cycling. “I feel the time is perfect to launch the Moda Kingdom Endurance Sports Kerry cycling team. It will give our squad all the back up and structures they need to compete with the big teams like Aqua Blue and UCD. “Clubs have been doing a great job but they don’t have the capability to put together a package like we have. We have brought in Moda as bike sponsors, Rubena Tyres, Lake Shoes and a full backroom staff. We have a sports masseur and nutritionist on board as well as someone to look after the squads meals between stages”. “We have also gotten great local supports from the like of Mike Dennehy who works with Kingdom Enduarance Sports, Reamda who are a ‘robotic’s company in Tralee, Sean Og’s, McDonnells, Moriarty Engineering and Ballyroe Heights Hotel”. The squad is made up of 10 top riders who have all been competing against each other but are now set to ride as a Kerry team. They are Eddie Barry who signs from Liquidworks/Fitscience, John Mannix, Benny Cassidy and John Brosnan from Killarney Cycling Club, Denis Dunworth, Mark Nolan, George Doyle and Christopher Dunworth who come on board from Manor West Tralee BC plus James White and Mark Houlihan ex I Bike. The Moda Kingdom Endurance Sports Kerry Cycling team is set to make its debut in the Lacey Cup in February before its first big target the Kerry Group International Ras Mumhan over 4 days at Easter.

COOM AN EASPAIG THE NEW CLIMB IN RAS MUMHAN:The 500km 4 day Kerry Group Ras Mumhan will once again hit the roads of the county over the Easter Weekend, April 3rd to 6th. The big climb at Coom an Easpiag is the only change to the route and this will see the riders go up from the Portmagee side thereby missing out on Valentia this time around. Good Friday will again be around East Kerry starting and finishing in Killorglin, day 2 is a loop from Kenmare and back taking the riders into West Cork and also over the Healy Pass, day 3 is down south with Waterville the hub and the traditional laps of Killorglin and the Donal McKenna circuits will bring the Ras to the finish line before lunch on Easter Monday.

KINGDOM CYCLING CLUB YOUTH INITIATIVE:Kingdom Cycling Club hosted the first gathering of cyclists from around the county for the Kerry Youth Cycling Initiative, which departed the Aqua Dome car park on Sunday last. Twenty two young cyclists, supported by their parents, volunteer cyclists and marshals braved the cold and freezing condition to end the club’s year on a high note. Riders from Killarney, Killorglin and Listowel iBike were represented in the event with plans to have similar cycles hosted by other clubs in the coming months. The spin involved a number of age groups on the road; under 12, 14 and 16 riders as well as our 17 and 18 year olds, who were taken on the Blennerville/Clahane/Ballyard circuit. The club intends to continue its 10 o’clock spin every Sunday morning and when the evenings get longer we will be out more often. A busy and pleasurable 2015 awaits all with a number of cycles pencilled in to this year’s calendar already. A huge thank you and Happy New Year to all our cyclists, parents and guardians, volunteers, committee, media and to the man that puts in all that hard work.

BREAK FOR THE DOGS:With Greyhound Stadiums around the country having fewer racing nights in 2015 the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium decided to take their break over the first two weeks of January, this coming after a great December at the track. It does seem like the right idea to take the days off now and not during the summer when tourists boost the numbers of regulars attending the races.Racing will be back on Friday January 16th and Saturday 17th. As well as the normal qualifying trials on Monday mornings from 10am to 11am the Stadium will also have qualifying trials on Tuesday evening January 20th and Tuesday February 17th from 6pm to 7pm to accommodate owners working during daytime hours. Owners wishing to trial dogs for the Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances juvenile classic, with a winner’s prize of e15,000 and which begins on Friday February 6th, can call the racing office on 061 448057.

OLD RIVALS CLASH IN DENNY KDL PREMIER:The old Tralee Dynamos versus Killarney Celtic rivalry that had soccer fans licking their lips in anticipation has faded a bit over the last few years. Dynamos foray into the League of Ireland took them out of Kerry soccer and once back they have had to win their way back into the Premier Division. They are now back amongst the top teams and face Celtic in Killarney on Sunday. Both sides have eyes on the title although Celtic’s 1-0 loss to The Park has dented their hopes a little so they will want to get back to winning ways. Dynamos on the other had had a facile victory over a depleted Rattoo Rovers side last weekend.Clubs are asked to note that an important Delegate Meeting takes place this Monday night at the KDL AT 8pm. The draw for the Premier Cup the Greyhound Bar KO Cup takes place on the night along with the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youths Cup and the Dominos Pizza U17 Cup. The entry fewe of e60 must be paid on the night. The other big news on the soccer front is that the FAI has announced two u15 Internationals for the county. Scotland will take on Ireland at Celtic Park in Killarney on Friday 23rd with a 7.30pm kick off and on Sunday in Listowel Celtic’s grounds at Tanavalla where the game kick off at noon.

PARNELLS NEWS:The club has a lovely collection of photos from the prizegiving night with Brian Cody. They will be publishing a photo gallery on the website shortly. The club would also like to thanks all the supporters and volunteers who help out and contributed to the bag packing in the Dunnes Stores Horan Centre on New Year Eve.

Looking Ahead: In 2014 the club took part in its first ever Tralee St Patrick’s Day Parade. This proved to be a great success and they are looking to build on it this year. Plan will begin to be drawn up in the coming weeks so if you will be around to give a hand let the club committee know.

NA GAEIL NOTES:AGM: All members are invited to the AGM which takes place on Friday the 9th in the Clubhouse at 8.30pm.National Draw: The club is engaged with the GAA in Croke Park and participating in the Monster 15 Prize Draw with prizes including All Star trips, E1,500 travel voucher and e1000 shopping vouchers. Nearest the pin was Barry O’Donoghue and the longest drive went to Dan Lucey. Cards and Bingo continue each week in the clubhouse and all are welcome.

KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NOTES:Congratulations to all the Juveniles who picked up awards and medals at the ceremony at the end of December. They all deserve great praise for the hard work they put in during the year. Thanks also to the senior players who presented the awards and medals.Indoor training has restarted in the CBS The Green school hall with the 12’s and 14’s training from 5.30 to 6.30pm and the 16’s and hour later. The Senior Town Championship semi-final has been re-fixed for Saturday January 17th at 7pm in the John Mitchels complex. The final will take place on Sunday 31st at 2pm in Ballymac. The Kerins O’Rahillys 10k is set for February 1st and begins a great day of sport as Kerry face Mayo later that afternoon. The next jackpot will be e3,700.The Jimmy Duffy Memorial Cycle will take place on Saturday, January 10th from St Pat’s Blennerville to Castleisland and back with refreshments afterwards in Quane’s. The celebrations continue that evening with Mass followed by music in the bar.The Club is looking for volunteers in all areas so if you have an hour or

two give Sec Terry Boyle a call.Strictly Come Dancing: There are a limited number of Strictly videos still available from Jimmy Mangan.

AUSTIN STACKS STORIES:The underage section of the club is back so check out the exact times from your trainers. The u14’s are in preparation for their trip to Nemo Rangers which will take place on the weekend of January 31st / February 1st for the Mick O’Brien Tournament. The club is looking for a music group, figure dance group and set dancers for Senior Scor which will take place next month. The club’s Juvenile AGM was well attended and a full committee and roster of coaches were selected on the night.

SINCERE SYMPATHY’S:

We don’t normally print sympathy messages as we might forget someone. However we must mention the late Seamus O’Mahony who passed away over Christmas. Seamus was the original voice of sport on Radio Kerry and the foundation of the station’s sports department that we have today and one that I am proud to do a little bit with. He had a great love of all sports but especially Tralee’s sporting community. All sports fans in pass on our sympathies to his family and May the Sod Rest Gentle on His Soul.
