Guest Lectures at ARC
On 2 September Ambassador Jørgen Ørstrøm Møller visited the Asia Research Centre
where he gave a lecture titled "Into the Age of Non-Economics" highlighting flaws and
shortcomings of current economic theory and models, and presenting recommendations to-
wards a more relevant model based on a cross-disciplinary approach that recognizes human
behavioral patterns and motivations and the implausability of continued exponential growth
in material wealth. Professor Ove Kaj Pedersen, Department of International Business and
Politics acted as discussant.
Dr. Nagesh Kumar of the UN Economic and Social Commission
for Asia and the Pacific gave a lecture on regional integration in
Asia on 1 October. He argued that in order to sustain the dynamics
of Asian and Pacific economies after the financial crises, a broad-
ening of regional economic integration is required.
Dr Kumar visited CBS in connection with the conference on FDI in
India held by ARC 2 and 3 October, where he was invited to give
the opening keynote address (see below).
Ass. Prof. Renuka Mahadevan from University of
Queensland visited on 7 October to lecture on the subject
of food security and its connection to poverty. Based in a
case study of Vietnam, she proposes a composite food se-
curity index to deal with the complex relations between
food security and poverty. Renuka Mahadevan is an ap-
plied economist and her work is mainly policy-oriented.
This study aims to help towards a targeted approach to ad-
dressing food security in developing countries.
28. October W.S. Schupf Professor Takao Kato from Col-
gate University and visiting Velux Professor at CBS, pre-
sented a paper on segmentation in the Japanese labour market.
Looking at the years 1982-2007 Kato examines the shifts between
’Good jobs’ and ’Bad jobs’, defined by whether a worker is defined as
’standard worker’ (seishain) in her workplace. The most notable fin-
dings are, first, that the improved conditions of employment for women
in Japanese work places that were achieved during the 1980’es, were
back to where they started by the end of the 1990’ies. Second, that the
popular narrative of a shift from Good Jobs to Bad Jobs, is rather a
shift from bad jobs to other Bad jobs. This is explained by the decrease in small family busi-
nesses. The staff of these businesses were typically older family members, registered as ”self
-employed”, while the younger generation comming into the labor market typically work in a
convenience store or other larger company, registered as ”non-standard worker”. Though
registered differently in the statistics, both have the characteristics of Bad Jobs.
