Good News for everyone!! Fagiolinever rests and never will!! It’s almostuseless to talk about the problemscreated by the unstoppable rise in oilprices and the consequences for themarket, but the more you are able toadapt to the fast changing world, theeasier it is to survive.

In order to have a general picture ofthe group and the market, please findbelow interviews with FagioliExecutives: Mr. Fabio Belli, Mr.Riccardo Tippmann and Mr. MorenoMassetti.

Mr. Fabio Belli, deals withall the commercial matters and hasknowledge of the market

Mr. Belli what do you think aboutFagioli’s current economicsituation?First of all I’d like to highlight the factthat the economic outcomes of thefirst six months of 2008 is followingthe trend of 2007, which has beenvery positive, with a turnover of about196 million Euros, 28% higher

compared to 2006. An externalauditing company specialised inbusiness analysis studied FagioliGroup’s financial position, theoutcome was positive with anencouraging future.

What do you think are the reasonsbehind this outcome?I think it comes down to all thepersonnel (at all levels) throughoutthe group understanding theimportance of being part of a group “ateam”. This strong sense of teamworkallows us to bring together resourcesto enable us to be flexible andcompetitive in the market. With thesupport of our engineers andoperators, Fagioli continually triesadapt itself to even more challengingdemands from our clients.

What plans does Fagioli have forthe future? Fagioli has decided to invest in highcapacity crawler cranes and hasrecently purchased two new last-generation Liebherr cranes (LR 1750and LR11350). The LR11350 iscapable of hoisting over 1,250 ton, with a total lifting height of more than200m. Fagioli has also increased itsfleet of SPMT’s, consolidating itsprimary position in the heavytransport and lifting industry.

Anything more to add?The future will be very challenging! The recent boom in petrochemical, power and off-shore activities withover 1000 projects around the world isproof the market is increasing at astaggering rate. At the same timethese projects are becoming biggerand bigger and require the latesttechnology, equipment, engineeringand expertise. Fagioli possess theserequirements!!!!

Words with some of the ExecutivesMr. Riccardo Tippmannis responsible for the GlobalDevelopment

So, Mr. Tippmann how is theinternational development ofFagioli? The Group’s huge investments instrategic locations are strengthening, and important new ones are coming upin the future to reinforce our globalnetwork and unique integrated service, worldwide.

It all went well in Spain for theoperations of heavy transport, lifting and final installation ofmodules, tanks and ancillarypieces that compose the re-gasification concrete terminalunder construction for the AdriaticLNG project.

In issue 06 of the news letter, wegave a brief explanation of thecomplexity of the job, whichinvolved the interesting load-in ofthe gigantic 1,200 tonne tanksand their final positioning withinthe gravity base structure (GBS),as well as high-lighting the factthat our client, one of the biggestplayers in the world for energyprovision, is building the firstoffshore concrete terminal in theworld to be towed and positionedin Italy.

Since the last issue of the newsletter, Fagioli have carried outfurther operations with a speciallymade lifting system, using towerlifts and strand jacks and aspecially made “elevator system”with box girders and skiddingtracks to position the modules ontop of the GBS.

Work performed over the last fewmonths:

Lifting of a 1,300 tonne livingquarter using two towers, two boxgirders, two skidding tracks.

Transport of a power generatorunit (weighing 2,400 tonnes) bymeans of 108 SPMT axle lines (6lines x 18 axles), and the finalerection using three tower lifts.

Load-in by means of 2 x 30 axleline SPMTs of a 1,600 tonneelectrical instrument building, aswell as storage and change ofaxle line configurations to performthe final erection.

Final positioning of one of the twobreasting structures, load out andload in with 4 x 14 SPMT axles. Thebreasting structure was transportedclose to the GBS, while 1 x 32 and 1x24 axle lines had been previouslypositioned inside the basin of theGBS. The module was thenpositioned onto the trailers inside the

Adriatic Project

basin, moved close to the three towerlifts and connected to the lifting frameassembled on the ground, previouslypositioned on the girders. After theconnection of the module to the liftingarrangements, it was lifted and keptstill in position for about three weeksin order to weld it to the GBS.

become ever more confident in theFagioli-Yew Choon partnership.A recent audit by Shell’s Top RiggingScrutiny team bestowed upon us highpraise for our site set up, equipmentcondition, equipment certification andsafety awareness. We have also wonfor the second time, the Shell monthlyaward for best contractor.

Changing priorities for FosterWheeler will see the last vessel to belifted using the towers, completelydressed prior to lifting rather than cladand completed in the vertical. This willextend the contract by some 6weeks.

A 53m tall, 450Te Column No 8301was lifted to vertical and turned 120 ofor setting on its base on Saturday14th June. The operation began at0830hrs and was complete at1200hrs.

This was No3 out of 4No vessels tobe erected using the new tower liftsystem on a project where a further45No vessels were contracted to belifted by crane, 13No of which have sofar been erected. An additional 14novessels have so far been added to thecontract but this number is set toincrease as Foster Wheeler and Shell

For the record MEG is Mono EthyleneGlycol (a toxic cousin of the antifreeze you put in your car) which isthe base for many plastics products. Itwill not improve your Chardonnay. There is no escaping the fact that theHoudini site team are setting highstandards in safety and safetytraining, planning efficiency andexecution of works which is reflectedin the positive feedback from theclient and the customer.

Fagioli Asia was contracted by PTPEC-Tech Indonesia to lift a steamdrum for a Paper Pulp Mill in Riau,Indonesia. Due to the obstruction of agirder beam in the direction of skiddingthe steam drum to position, 4nos ofL100 jacks were used for the lift. Weused 2nos of L100 jacks to lift the drumfrom ground level to 70m elevation. Atthis elevation, we transferred the drumto another set of L100 jacks via atriangular transition plate beforeskidding to final location.

Fagioli Asia were contracted by Yew Choon Pte Ltd to assist in theinstallation of the crown on the above metal press using a T1400telegantry. Cranes were ruled out due to the height restrictionswithin the factory.

A Heavy transport project iscomposed of multiple activities, itcannot be categorised as merelymoving huge items from one place toanother.

Landscape architecture and urbandesign has changed profoundly overthe last few years. The naturalincreasing development density hastaken to a continuous evolution inurban environment scenery. Thismetropolitan “transformation” ofcourse involves the access and theconformation of road maps with bothpositive and negative aspects. Thecreation of new infrastructure meansnew roads but also, looking from ourpoint of view, the creation of more“obstacles such as roundabouts ornew buildings close to the streets, flowerbeds, parks.... More urbanvariations mean more restrictions, more surveys, more solutions to beprovided to allow a heavy convoy topass by. The paradox of the situationis that some decades ago thetechnology was not able to supportthe transport of huge modules due tothe weight and dimensions, while nowthanks to the incredible modern andpowerful equipment any heavytransport is in theory possible butoften now, due to the limitation andrestrictions given by the urbandevelopment, not feasible. This canbe very frustrating as we have thesuitable means of transportation, wehave everything we need to safelyperform the transport, except……. theroads are now not feasible”

Urban Renewal and the

“Combi-Transport” Solution!!!

There is a saying ‘Big changes in history are madeby small events’ This is proven to be true!!!Sometimes a few centimetres could completelychange the development and the nature of atransport. This situation is typical in which Fagiolianalyse and evaluate all risks, prepare detailedsurveys and search for the most valuable solution. An overland transport of heavy items performedwith trailers will become a combination of differenttransport activities such as road and bargetransportation and/or road and rail transportation.

The extensive state of the artequipment owned by Fagioli allowsthe use of different and practicalsolutions. An example of these“combined activities” is the transportperformed from Ornago, North WestItaly to Venice Port , Marghera of areactor weighing 358 tonne with thefollowing dimensions 35.74m long x6.34m wide x 6.47m high. (Seephotographs left).

Such a huge module, 9.10 metershigh including supports, wasimpossible to be transported only byroad. So it was decided to take it toCremona river port using two 12 axletrailers. The item was unloaded by agroup-owned 600 ton capacity mobilegantry crane onto 16 axle lines ofSPMT’s. After these operations thereactor was lifted and loaded onto agroup-owned barge “Ticino” using afixed Fagioli 400 ton capacity gantrycrane (with two legs) and transportedto Marghera port in Venice.

Another “combi-solution” was the transport of a 328 tonne reactor (21.1mlong x 5.87m wide x 5.77m high) from Ricengo to Marghera port of Venice. As previously explained the combination of several activities was the uniqueand “only” solution to perform this kind of transport. Undoubted advantages are:

A door to door performance One single point of contact with reduced risk and economic savings Experience, competency proved by a long-standing activity in transport,

lifting and project logistics.

Bridge Installation... with SPMT’s

Fagioli has a long track record inbridge construction, erection of bridgesections, side spans and centrespans, incremental launching ofbridges and slide-in of completeprefabricated bridges….

With one of the largest fleets ofstrands jacks and tower lift systemsFagioli have lifted and positionedunthinkable weights and memorablestructures such as the GatwickWalkway Bridge, Heathrow Terminal 5Roof, and the Wembley Arch. Overthe last few years Fagioli have carriedout the positioning and installation ofbridges using SPMT’s and gantrycranes. The key aspect of this kind ofactivity is engineering, coordinationand precision.

10

Fagioli was called upon to install andposition a bridge to pass over the A22highway in the North East of Italy. Thebridge was built in two sections eachweighing 1,250 tonnes. Thedimensions were 114m long, 23mwide, 5.3m high. The sections werelifted by 122 SPMT axle lines whichwere divided into 4 groups (2 for eachsection). Steel structures werepositioned on top of the SPMT’s andthe bridge sections were placed ontop.

The SPMT’s were powered by 6power packs, the two “sections” werelifted and rotated (thanks to themanoeuvrability of the trailers). Thisbrought the two sections very closewithin a few millimetres allowing thewelding of the connection point andthe final joint of the two sections!!

Another bridge installation wasperformed in this wonderful region(Trentino Alto Adige) famous for theDolomite Mountains and the first-class wine such as TeroldegoRotaliano and Muller Thurgau (just tomention a few…).

Page 11: Issue 08 3 column:Layout 3 · 2018-04-13 · 2 Good News for everyone!! Fagioli never rests and never will!! It’s almost useless to talk about the problems created by the unstoppable

Lifting, transport and installation of a 440tonne walkway bridge in Dozza (Bologna).

Fagioli used four 600 tonne capacitygantry cranes to lift the bridge. Two 8axles lines SPMT’s with supports werethan positioned under the structure readyto be moved onto its final position.

Great challenging civil installations!!!

In Zambana (Trento) Fagioli completed the lifting, transportation andinstallation of a 340 tons bridge, 60m long and 17m wide.

The new bridge literally passed overthe old bridge and was laid on thesupports previously placed on theother bank. The Spmt’s centrallypositioned were free to move on thewest side of the river and bepositioned on the corners (replacingthe supports). Than the new bridge(supported by 2 SPMTs respectivelyon the west and east side of the river)was moved parallel to the river toreach the final position.

The new bridge was on the right side of a river supported by4 x 4 axles lines SPMTs positioned at the four corners andmoved in line just in front of the old bridge. The new bridgewas than leaned on the west side with supports. Thisoperations allowed the two SPMTs to be moved away fromthe two corners (on the west) and centrally positioned in lineunder the bridge. The bridge was than lifted from thesupports (thanks to the hydraulic system of the trailers) andwith this new configuration the SPMTs in line managed tomove for 60m over the old bridge.

From Northern Italy to Central Italy

Minititlan Project

Fagioli Inc. was contracted to move a1,260 tonnes hydrocracker reactordestined to the Pemex refinery inMinatitlan, Mexico. A total of 56 axlelines and 2 Power Pack Units of SelfPropelled Modular Transporters withancillary grillage and fasteningequipment were shipped to Vera Cruzand assembled on the deck barge. The barge was then moved to the portof Coatzacoalcos to meet with the H/Lship carrying the hydrocracker.

The reactor was offloaded on theSPMT and supports positionedon barge deck. After completionof the fastening, the loadedbarge was moved to the refinerydock on the CoatzacoalcosRiver. The barge was lowered tominimum freeboard to enable thepassage under the Pajaritosbridge. Upon its arrival at the refinery, the reactor was rolled- off bySPMT on a tailor made ramp andmoved to the staging area.

Wood River ProjectFagioli engineered a plan to roll-offthe Coke Drums from the barges bymeans of own 32 axle lines of SelfPropelled Modular Transporters(SPMT). The Phoenix Terminal is onthe Mississippi River at theconfluence with the Missouri River.Due to environmental limitations, thepreparation of the Terminal could onlybe temporary.

Fagioli designed a modular temporarybulkhead consisting of hardwoodtimber, steel mats and plates tomanage a range of 3m of water leveland to minimise the bearing pressureon the existing river bank. The bargeswere moved to shore and pinned. Themooring was achieved by twopushboats and lines attached toheavy equipment on land. The ballastplan was studied to minimise the loadon the barge hull during groundingand to keep the keel within a level thatcould be negotiated by the 600mmSPMT stroke. The slope and changeof elevation from barge deck to theroll-off ramp, the temporary bulkheadand the river levee did not leavemargins to the SPMT during the roll-off.

Once the time of berthing the bargesarrived, the flexibility of the plan, together with the preparation of thecrew demonstrated to be key to thesuccess of the operations. TheMississippi River was in fact at floodstage with river current of 3 knots.Despite of the critical weatherconditions the operations did not stopand the coke Drums were safelyoffloaded.

Once on land each Coke Drum wastransported by SPMT to the stagingarea and offloaded by means ofSPMT own hydraulic system.

Fagioli Inc. was contracted to receive 4 Coke Drums in the Port ofNew Orleans, Louisiana and transport them to the PhoenixTerminal, close to Hartford, Illinois. The Drums are destined to theWood river Project. Each vessel measures 40.5m x 10.3m x 9.7mand weighs 516 te. They were discharged by a geared vessel onto4 deck barges provided by Fagioli at Chalmette slip in NewOrleans. The barges were prepared with load spreaders andsupports to receive the Coke Drums and transport them along theMississippi River.

The bigger they are the more we like them!!!!Fagioli specialises in themovement and transportof huge modules. Aproject Fagioli performedrecently was the load outand transport of twosections of a cruise ship. Both 26m wide and 20mhigh, but one weighing2,864 tons, 106m longand the other weighing3,664 ton, 93m long. These sectionswere transported using 132 axles ofSPMT’s. The sections were loadedonto a standard barge at Porto

Another interesting transportwas the one executed atCivitavecchia port (CentralItaly). Fagioli was called uponto transport and perform theload out operations of twohuge cranes weighing 1,600tons each. Over the last fewyears Fagioli has performedlots of load-outs and load-inoperations using trailers andbarges. A massive crane likethe one showed in the pictureis to be “handled with care”. Fagioli studied the best solution tosafely move the crane by positioning 3 lines of 18 axle SPMTsand 2 lines of 10 SPMTs in order to get the correct stability ofa module 41m high, 29m wide and the length of its “arm” was77m long. Fagioli liaised closely with the client to study thelashing, securing and ballasting operations to ensure thecranes were transported safely.

Nogaro and unloaded onto afloating dock in Rjieka (Croatia) inorder to be joined together.

In Croatia, Fagioli performed the loadout of 2 gigantic monopods weighing451 and 486 tons respectively. Thetwo trailers (2 X 10 axles of SPMT’s)were used to transport the monopodstructure onto the barge. To supportthe structure, grillage was placedbetween the SPMTs and themonopod. Once the barge wasmoored in front of the yard, theballasting operations began to allowthe monopod structure to bepositioned onto the barge.

The photo above shows the transport of two sections(columns) weighing 122 and 146 tons with a height of 5.4mfrom Lonate Ceppino to Sannazzaro de Burgundi (in theNorth of Italy). During the journey several interventions weredone, with removal and repositioning of road signs, trafficlights, lamp posts etc…..

Heavy Items, Heavy transport!

Page 15: Issue 08 3 column:Layout 3 · 2018-04-13 · 2 Good News for everyone!! Fagioli never rests and never will!! It’s almost useless to talk about the problems created by the unstoppable

We have already mentioned all thedifficulties that a heavy transport canraise but sometimes only experienceand determination gets the job done.An example of this is the transport of

In France Fagioli was called upon toperform the transport of a transformerfrom Marcianise, South of Italydestined to Salles Curan, France. Thetransformer 7.3m long, 3.1m wide and4.4m high weighed 95 tons.

The transport was performed by Fagioliusing a convoy of 1 x 4 and 1 x 6 axlelines. The item left the manufacturerand headed to Naples port where our

group-owned motor-vessel ‘Storm’ waswaiting. The convoy was loaded ontothe vessel (ro-ro operation) and laterarrived in France at Sete port (close toMontpellier). After unloading in France, the convoy was transported 200km toits final destination. Fagioli preparedfeasibility studies and safety plans forthis project and safety checks werecarried out throughout the

transportation. The picture is prettyimpressive showing the passage of theconvoy on this spectacular bridge withhas the highest pylons 245m and 221mand the highest mast 343m in theworld.

the cement factory mills, transportedfrom Roncadelle to Caravate in Italy.Strikes of local public utilities causeddelays in performing the daily transportand bureaucratic hindrances resulted

in endless meetings with localauthorities and the client….. Only thepersistence of our permit andcommercial staff lead to a solution anda positive result for the project. Themills were 17m long with a diameter of5.6m, weighing 170 tons each. Theconvoy was 6.6m high using a 14 axleline trailer and a tractor. The lastportion of the route (30 - 40km) was themost challenging. Considering thedifficulties and the amount ofintervention (like the unexpectedstrikes during the night which forcedthe transport to be rescheduled duringthe day causing unavoidable problemsfor traffic) the convoy was forced topass through a bottleneck with adistance of only 2cm either side!!!!Once the mills arrived at theirdestination everyone involved in theproject, the client, local authorities andFagioli personnel breathed a sigh ofrelief!!!

15

Maritime Activities

Fagioli group specialise in maritimetransportation, we own a fleet ofships suitable for performing heavytransportation of heavy lift vessels. The loading and unloading activitiescan be performed by either “ro-ro”and / or “lo-lo”. Ro-ro is a winningactivity for Fagioli as this often goeshand in hand with loading themodules using group-owned trailersand SPMTs, thus combining the roadtransport, sea journey, unloadingactivity and final delivery.

The last few months have beenparticularly challenging for theFagioli fleet, “bouncing” from oneside of the Mediterranean Sea tothe other. Some examples are asfollows:

The road and sea transport of a 195tonne transformer 9.0m long, 3.9mwide and 4.4m deep was loaded inMarghera port by 11 + 11-axletrailers and unloaded in Crotonewhere it was delivered to its finaldestination. The total convoyweighed 388 tons and was 65mlong. The road and sea combinationrequires a great deal of teamworkbetween the different departmentsinvolved (engineering, heavytransport and shipping divisions) inorder to perform the job safely.

Fagioli regularly perform ro/rooperations for the transport ofassembled / disassembled mobilecranes. A recent example is the fullyassembled mobile harbour craneGottwald HMK 280 which weighed360 tons (dimensions of 62.5m long,11.5m wide and 32m deep) was seatransported from Valencia (Spain) toPozzallo, Ragusa Italy. See photobelow.

Another interesting project was thedelivery of a fully assembled MHC5000 crane weighing 440 tons, 58.8mlong, 13.8m wide and 34m deep fromMonfalcone to Leghorn. The cranewas the largest ever delivered toLeghorn Harbour.

To help optimise costs, Fagioliproposed a cost-saving solutioncombining the transport of two cranesleaving from the same port(Monfalcone), on the same vesseland unloaded in different ports. A 310tons fully assembled mobile crane54.86m long, 13.3 wide and 29.2mdeep which was unloaded at Crotoneand a 240 tons fully assembled crane48.3 long, 11.8m wide and 26.8mdeep unloaded at Piombino.

Fagioli vessels are self-geared withlifting devices up to 800 tonnecapacity. The lo-lo operation involvesthe lifting activity of different “items”such as turbines, transformers, engines and catamarans.

Ro Ro and Lo Lo Operations

transported and installed the fourheavy items.

In January Fagioli performed thelaunching of a 260 tonne vessel inMessina (Italy). The first step was thetransport from the storage area to thequay using group owned SPMTs, 2 x 10axle lines. The second step was theoperation Fagioli personnel prepared theH/L Storman Asia vessel with onboardgears to lift the catamaran and position itinto the sea.

Several activities wereinvolved for the sea androad transport of twoengines weighing 265 tonsand two generators fromTrieste to Ottana (Nuoro). The items were unloadedat Oristano port by vesselgear onto SPMTs, 2 x 6axle lines. Using severaltrailer configurations and a 600 tonnecapacity gantry crane Fagioli

Fagioli shipping department has beeninvolved in several projects for thepower industry: the transport of aturbine (190 tons) and an alternator(230 tons) from Genoa were unloadedin Skikda and Algiers (Algeria). Also, transformers, one weighing 280 tonand two weighing 250 tons weretransported from Marghera port toTarragona (Spain) and Crotone(Italy)... and several other turbinesand transformers destined to Spain,France and South of Italy.

The shipping department is sailinglike the wind!!!

Project ForwardingThere is an interesting article writtenby Giles Morrow and G. LLoydWilson in 1942 called “SomeProblems of Freight Forwarders “which denotes that things have notchanged so far. The article is ananalysis of the Freight forwardingworld and its continuousdevelopment. The article quotes“Forwarders take justifiable pride inthe record of their achievements inadapting transportation services tomeet present war and commercialrequirements… coordination of rail-water-motor facilities, heavy loadingof cars, prompt release of equipment, direct routing of traffic, and otherpractices have made a place forfreight forwarders in war andpeacetime transportation”. Nothinghas changed....; the social conditionsand the market requirementsinfluence the choices and directionstaken by the freight forwarders, andas such “prompt” replies to all clientsare needed.

Up-to-date, state-of the art, speed, flexibility, cost saving are the keywords to a successful projectforwarding activity. The continuouschange in market conditions andexpectations has led to a changes inthe type of material shipped for thepetrochemical, power, Oil & Gasindustry (which is the main area ofwork) with the development of somevery interesting andunusual projects. This isthe case of the transportperformed by our branchin Rome for theconsignment of 4 FastPatrol Boats from Italy toLake Victoria, Uganda. The vessels had beendirectly commissioned toour client by the UgandanPolice. The only thing that

was certain was the

shortage of time to perform the joband the destination! Fagioli managedto find the right solution for thedelivery: air transport using Antonovplane and even the general strike inItaly did not stop our team whoorganised the transport from Gaetavia Nice Airport.

Our branch in Rome is alsocommitted to the transport of all thematerial moved in Italy for the ItalianMinistry of Defence. This involves thetransport of helicopters, militaryvehicles, horses and chariots forparades…. We can deal with andtransport anything!!!

Turin is an Italian town (built as aRoman “castra” military camp like agrid similar to American cities)positioned in the northwest with suchan enormous historical background: itwas actually the first capital city ofItaly. Turin is a typical industrialisedtown famous for two of the biggestEuropean car companies in Europe(FIAT and LANCIA) but also for theaerospace industry.

The Turin branch handles thetransport and logistics of manyprojects dealing with complicated anddelicate modules, satellites for sciencestudies and telecommunications.Fagioli is responsible for thechartering of dedicated planes, and inmost cases the collection, the road or

air transport and prosecution up tofinal destination at bases within theUSA, Russia or French Guyana.

The huge amount of warehouse spacein Turin is also important for thecollection and storage of material.Currently, one thousand cubic metersof material are stored there ready tobe shipped to South Africa Otheractivities involve the daily coordinationof several overland and maritimetransports (containers and break-bulk)for the glass, iron and steel industry, rotary machines, spare parts andcomponent.

Milan has always been the focal pointfor Fagioli when it comes to projectlogistics. This is because the mainclients and EPC contractors arelocated in the North of Italy.

In the last issue of the news letter wementioned the procurement of animportant project in the industrial partof Rubais, U.A.E. This project iscurrently at its most advancedoperational phase. It accentuates theimportance of our expertise, technology and well-known synergies. The project involves the forwardingand shipping of standard material incontainers and the complete transportof items weighing up to 500 tons usinggroup owned equipment, whenpossible.

The 3 pictures on the right show theunloading of material from Storm,Fagioli’s heavy lift vessel.

The projects awarded over the lastfew years have given Fagioli theopportunity to consolidatepartnerships in countries ofdestination where the market isbooming. Furthermore the projectactivity is not only restricted to the oil& gas / petrochemical industries butalso to the power industry. Anexample of a project awarded in thisindustry is the installation of powerplants in Algeria. Fagioli wascontracted by an important Italianclient to ship and transport threeentire plants destined to Algeria.Algeria has reached new economicheights thanks to a solid economicgrowth that has allowed the country toinvest, especially taking intoconsideration the positive GDP whichhas been growing rapidly over the lastfew years. The optimum moment wasthe opening of the Fagioli Algerianoffice with a team formed of local andex-patriots, co-ordinated by theproject department in Italy. The scopeof work includes the transport of itemswith a maximum weight of 300 tons.In the next issue we will offer a moredetailed description of this project, which started only few months ago.

Another project wasfor 8,000 cubicmeters sent toMisurata port fromseveral sites in Italy.

The materialtransported andshipped to Libya wasgas and filterseparator skids forthe Oil & Gasindustry weighing up

to 64 tons. They were packed incases up to 13m long. (See picturebelow)

The Libyan office in close contact withthe head office carried out theorganisation of the shipment andbecame the keystone for the solutionof all the bureaucratic matters relatedto the customs clearance andauthorisations for the unloadingprocedures at the Libyan ports!!!

Fagioli provides project forwardingservices all over the world! Withshipments in several African countriesone example is for the UN. (seepicture above). One particular areawhere the activity is moreconcentrated is the Middle East. Ourhead office in S.Ilario is currentlycommitted to several shipping andforwarding projects in Oman: one ofwhich is approximately 1,200 cubicmeters of material for an asphalt plantand a plant for marble processing.

In Qatar there is the final destinationof a project involving the shipping ofseveral containers.

Libya has always been a nice growthmarket for the Oil & Gas andpetrochemical industries. Over thelast couple of years, Fagioli hasworked on several large projectssupported by local branches withgroup-owned equipment. The Libyanoffice is run by local and ex-patriotswho support Fagioli in the localforwarding of modules and all thedocumentation andcustom clearancerequirements. Thelast six monthsFagioli has shippedapproximately 7,000cubic meters ofcarpentry material forboiler installationsfrom Italy to Derna /Bengasi (See pictureright).

In our last issue of the Newsletter wefocussed on the Ro Ro activities fromItaly to North Africa and the closeworking relationship between ourhead office and our office in Tunisia.Fagioli are pleased to announce thepurchase of new swap bodies whichare a lot bigger than our currentones!!

cranes, group-owned trailers andaerial platforms and a dedicated teamwho follows every single step of theproject.

As well as heavy items for the powerindustry, Set-Trans also handle otherweighty items which requiremeticulous care. An example of this isthe project recently performedconcerning an historical howitzer fromthe Museum of Artillery to Amionebarracks. The scope of work was themechanical disassembly of theweapon into its main components; theload of the sections onto group-owned equipment; transport andunloading of the separate parts inorder to execute the final assembly. This was all carried out in accordancewith the Museum authorities. Ourtechnicians and personnel carried outall the operational activitiessuccessfully and with care.

Heavy Module Assembly

Fagioli specialises in heavy assembly. This activity is mainly performed bySet-Trans, a group-owned companywhich is located in Turin and has theexperience and competence toperform this kind of project on aworldwide basis.

Fagioli is often called upon todismantle and/or relocate heavypresses. This particular activity is aspeciality of the assembly groupwhich utilises in-house hydraulics andelectrician specialists as well aspacking, shipping and a dedicatederection team to disassemble, pack, ship and erect heavy machinery.

Over the last few monthsSet-Trans has performedseveral “door-to-door”projects with thedisassembly of an entire`press line`, the transporton site and the relocationof the new presses. Theimportance of this kind ofservice is not only theorganisation of thetransport but also thehandling of the completecycle of assembly-disassembly process. Aswell as this, ourpersonnel take care of allthe electrical, hydraulicand mechanicalproblems related to theconnection anddisconnection of thepresses and ancillarymaterial. Furthermore

our personnel carry out thepositioning of all the elements, beams, and the iron structure which isunderground in a specially-made pitthat gathers all the cables and wires. This is the case with all the press lineshandled and shipped from Italy toPoland and India by means of gantry

Fagioli specialises in all kinds ofheavy transport, one of which is rail.Over the last year or so Fagioli hasbeen involved in several heavy railtransport projects in Poland. One ofthe projects required renting a 32 axleline railcar to a Swiss manufacturingcompany to perform a roundtripservice of approximately 600km fromWroclaw to Gdynia port.

The project involved severalgenerators weighing 230 to 464tonnes to be loaded onto a heavy liftvessel at Gdynia port ready to beshipped to their final destination.Three Fagioli operators wereassigned throughout the project toperform the execution of thetransports, which involved:preparation of the railcars; loading ofthe generators; unloading at port andfinally return transport to themanufacturing area.

Considering the weight of thegenerators, the operators paidparticular attention when driving therailcars not to collide with obstacleson-route such as rail signs, bridges, curbs etc. as well as executing theappropriate movement of the railcarswhich involved lowering, raising orshift movement of the load using therailcars oil-pressure system.

The 32 axle line railcar was used withdifferent configurations: the classic‘self supporting’, and two moresophisticated solutions called “thecage” and “intermediate beams”.The loading operations were carriedout at Wroclaw manufacturingpremises using internal lifting deviceswhilst the unloading activities at theport were performed with specificallychosen lifting equipment.

Heavy Rail Transport, Poland......The New Frontier

Due to the technical complexity of this“back and forth” transport activity andthe different languages, the initialstage of the whole process createdsome frictions and misunderstandingsbetween local and Fagioli teams. However, competence, experienceand the open minded approach ofboth teams overcame these initialuncertainties and with mutualcollaboration were even able toreduce the timescale to complete theoperations acting in the interests ofsafety at all times.

The organisation and coordination ofthis project was carried out by ourHeavy Rail Transport department inOpera (Mi).

Awarding does not only mean theappreciation for a job safelyperformed but directly or indirectly it isrecognition for the people who workbehind the scenes, a great teamdevoted to one common goal.

The specialised Carriers & RiggingAssociation (SC&RA) is aninternational trade association ofmore than 1,300 members from 43nations. The members are involved inspecialized transportation, machinerymoving and erecting, industrialmaintenance, crane and riggingoperations, manufacturing and rental.SC&RA “Hauling Job of the YearCompetition” is designed to honourand give special recognition tomembers that perform outstandingachievements in moving and truckingjobs. Winners are selected in threecategories: moving, trucking under160,000 pounds including cargo, andtrucking over 160,000 poundsincluding cargo.

SC&RA and ESTA AwardsEuropean Association of HeavyHaulage Transport and Mobile cranes(ESTA) organises each year the ESTAAwards of Excellence Competition. Inthe category Crane Job of the Year andin the category Transport Job of theYear an individual company is awardedfor its special performance, complicated, innovative or otherwiseinteresting project. From 2005 the twomain categories are divided into twosub-categories, depending on theweight of the cranes, and the weight, length and height of the trailer and load

ESTA AWARD DINNER PARTY washeld the first week of June inAmsterdam and got the participationof the main European “players” withinlifting and transport industry. Fagioliattended the contest with the “4thbridge on Canal Grande” and wasawarded with the 3rd prize in thecategory over 100 tonne.

The prize and valuable winningcertificate says “installation of the 4thbridge over the Canal Grande inVenice, Italy required detailed studies, engineering and preparations using acombination of barge and tugs,SPMT’s, cranes up to 800 ton andhydraulic lift towers”.
