The number of people registering to take our oil and gas health and safety certificate has grown by over 770% in just 12 months.

The NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety is attracting increasing numbers of students every month. Over the last three months up until the end of March over 750 people registered to take the qualification.

Teresa Budworth, Chief Executive of NEBOSH, commented: “The launch of our Oil & Gas Certificate couldn’t have been better timed. The Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 was a wake-up call for the industry everywhere to look more closely at its safety standards and procedures.

“One way of ensuring better standards is to improve knowledge and awareness of health and safety.“ "Our qualification focuses on hydrocarbon process safety, helping those working in the industry fulfil their workplace safety responsibilities both onshore and offshore.”

Mohamed Ahmed Al-Muflehi, Health and Safety Manager at Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) and the Recipient of Middle East Oil & Gas Outstanding Leader of the Year Award, added: “I believe this qualification is an essential tool for the oil and gas industry as it helps to create a HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) competent workforce, which in turn strengthens HSE management."

NEBOSH – globally recognised safety, health and environmental qualifications

Joel Nedamo has seen a lot of the world.

He was born, educated and began his working career in the Philippines. His degree in Civil Engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila helped him secure work in many different places such as Kuwait, Taiwan, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

But it’s another qualification that’s brought him even more success recently and it’s a qualification Joel hopes one day to take back home with him.

A few years ago, when working for a contracting company in the construction sector, Joel decided to develop his knowledge of health and safety. He saw it as a useful career move and one that might lead to a more interesting role.

His target was to gain a NEBOSH International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. But rather than jumping straight in at the deep end he chose to take the NEBOSH International General Certificate first, which he passed in 2008.

Two years later he gained his International Diploma and Joel now has a very interesting and challenging role. He is responsible for all aspects of health and safety at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The DWTC complex includes a 39-storey tower, housing offices for some of the world’s largest and most well-known businesses, as well as twelve exhibition halls, the Dubai International Convention Centre and residential apartments.

Joel’s responsibilities include reviewing all risk assessments, method statements, policies and activities at the centre. As this includes the operations of all visiting contractors and exhibitors he’s a very busy man! And as Joel says himself, it means he needs to know a lot about health and safety.

“I need a lot of information to be successful in my work and I have been able to develop this because of my Diploma. It’s a very advanced qualification.“Taking my NEBOSH International General Certificate broadened my knowledge and gave me more confidence. It put me on the pathway to achieving my Diploma and helped me secure the role I now have.”

Joel believes so strongly in the value of his qualifications he has set himself a long term goal of delivering NEBOSH courses in the Philippines, to try and improve health and safety standards there.

If you’re looking for a health and safety management position, you’re most likely to find one in the Midlands with an annual salary of around £44K, according to new research.

As in previous years, the 2012 NEBOSH Jobs Barometer also showed that anyone applying for a health and safety role almost certainly needs to have a relevant qualification.

Between 27 February and 12 March 2012, NEBOSH examined one hundred nationally advertised jobs for health and safety managers or advisors. In nine out of ten cases, a NEBOSH qualification and/or Technician Membership of IOSH or higher was specified.

Overall, 72% of positions mentioned at least one NEBOSH qualification, up from 66% last year. A NEBOSH Diploma was specified in 42 cases and a NEBOSH Certificate level qualification 37 times. As well as the NEBOSH General Certificate, employers also sought NEBOSH Construction and Environmental Certificates.

The average top-end salary advertised was £44,000 per annum, down slightly from £45,000 last year. In terms of availability of jobs, there appears to have been little change from 2011, with the health and safety jobs market remaining relatively healthy.

The majority of vacancies (30%) were located in the Midlands. This represents a shift from just 16% in 2011. Almost a quarter (22%) were located in London and 12% in the South East. Only 9% of roles were in the Home Counties, compared to 17% last year. Just 7% of jobs were in the North of England and Scotland, a similar proportion to 2011. Slightly less than one in 20 (4%) vacancies were 'flexible' on location and 6% were based overseas.

Environmental management responsibilities once again featured strongly in health and safety job adverts, mentioned in 62% of available positions, the same as in 2011. Responsibility for quality assurance was mentioned in 18% of roles, up from 12% last year.

NEBOSH Chief Executive, Teresa Budworth, commented: “Obviously we’re delighted that more employers than ever before are insisting that health and safety job applicants hold a NEBOSH qualification.

"But what’s more important is that high standards are not just being maintained, but are improving. This is crucial if employers are to protect lives, prevent injury and avoid the negative effects of poor health in the workplace.”

NEBOSH reveals its most popular qualification worldwide …

The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety has overtaken the NEBOSH National General Certificate when it comes to annual registrations.

Between April 2011 and 2012, there were 40,775 registrations to sit units of the NEBOSH International General Certificate compared to 37,426 for the National General Certificate.

“The National General Certificate, which in one form or another has been around for 23 years, contains UK health and safety law,“ explained Teresa Budworth, NEBOSH Chief Executive. “A few years ago it became clear that people from outside the UK were also looking to gain a NEBOSH Certificate. So in 2005 we launched our international version, the International General Certificate.

“The level of growth in popularity of the International General Certificate is quite staggering. Five years ago in 2007/08, just 2,683 people registered to take this qualification.”

The International Certificate becoming more popular than the National Certificate is a further sign of NEBOSH’s growing relevance and reputation throughout the world.

Looking at our current qualifications, including the three Diplomas, almost half of registrations now come from outside the UK, compared to just a third a year ago. Of these overseas registrations, 39% come from the Middle East and 31% from Asia. Registrations from Africa are also now emerging, accounting for 12%.

Teresa Budworth added: “When it comes to health, safety and environmental management, NEBOSH is no longer a name that’s only recognised in the UK, but is seen as a mark of excellence everywhere.”

Qualification for the process industries – for a global market

NEBOSH recently showcased an introductory health, safety and environmental qualification for people working anywhere in the world in the process industries.

The NEBOSH Health, Safety and Environment in the Process Industries qualification has been developed for people who work in the chemical process industries such as process operators, technicians and line supervisors.

“Safety, health and environmental know-how is a must-have for anyone working in these major hazard industries, so that they can raise standards, demonstrate competence and win more business“ said NEBOSH Chief Executive Teresa Budworth.

The qualification was promoted at the 10th American Society of Safety Engineers – Middle East Chapter (ASSE-MEC) conference in Bahrain, which took place in February 2012.

The qualification covers general workplace safety, looking at issues such as risk assessment and control; fire, electrical and transport safety; manual handling and hazardous substances.

It also deals with process safety including: common risks and controls, containment, plant integrity and emergency response, as well as environmental management such as control of emissions and environmental risk assessments.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Services recently held a special event to mark the outstanding results achieved by its staff in their NEBOSH National General Certificate exams.

Staff and officers from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were formally presented with their certificates in the presence of their Chief Fire Officer, representatives from NEBOSH and Course Provider RCES (UK) Ltd.

Chief Fire Officer Mark Yates, who also holds the NEBOSH National General Certificate, said: “This is a highly regarded qualification and I’m proud to see 11 members of staff achieving it, all with either credits or distinctions. Health and safety in the work place is a necessity in an organisation like ours, and their learning will undoubtedly be of benefit in their day-to-day lives.”

Teresa Hawkins, NEBOSH Development Manager who presented the certificates praised Fire Service staff, saying: “This was a hard-working, high achieving group and they all deserve to be congratulated.”

Outstanding results

If you hold a NEBOSH International General Certificate you are already half-way to achieving one of our two new qualifications.

The NEBOSH International Certificate in Construction Health and Safety is designed to help those working in construction but will also help you to minimise risks if you have construction or installation work on your site being carried out by contractors.

The NEBOSH International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management will help you to identify and manage fire risks in the workplace.

Both of these qualifications include Unit IGC1 from the International General Certificate, so if you have achieved your Certificate or a NEBOSH International Diploma in the last 5 years, you will not need to study or sit this unit again. In fact you are half-way to adding these new qualifications to your portfolio.
