STEM WEEK To kick off Term 3, STEM week took place in Week 2. On Monday students were invited to create their own unique lava lamps, personalised slime and show their magnificent artistic talents creating milk-candy art. Every student made a special version of slime and an art work capturing elements of her sweet and creative personality!

Tuesday brought new challenges with our students enhancing their mathematical skills, and becoming excellent target shooters to win a grand prize ‘

Wednesday allowed students to test the waters of the technology field, by learning how to program and control robots! Thursday was Physics frenzy day—students had to use their problem solving skills to make an egg survive and build the tallest and most structurally stable marshmallow tower. Facing a slight dilemma with broken eggs, we tested using spaghetti sticks instead.

On Friday the ultimate STEM escape took place; students were put to the test by combining both their scientific knowledge and mathematical skills to see which group would be first to escape a classroom.

Want to make your own lava lamp?

What you will need: Small clear jars; A supply of cold water; Food colour-ings; Vegetable oil; Alka-seltzer tablets (or you can use salt as a substitute). Fill a jar approx 1/4 full with cold water followed by 3/4s full with vegetable oil (or any type of oil you have). Add 3-5 drops of a food colouring of your choice. Drop an alka-seltzer tablet (or salt) into the jar. Screw the cap on tight-ly to avoid any spills and leaks. You will start to see a chemical reaction that creates the lava lamp effect. Note: When you are done playing with the lava lamp, do not pour it down the drain, instead, pour the contents of the lava lamp into a compost pile or dig a hole in your yard, away from any plants you care about, and pour the contents in the hole. If neither of those are an option, simply screw the cap on tightly and throw the lava lamp jar in your regular trash.

UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND ENGINEERING COMPETITION

On Saturday 1st August, we competed in the University of Auckland Engineering competition. Starting at 10am, our team of 3 Year 12 students, Pragati Prasad, Maninder Kaur and McKenzie Adams tackled the gruelling question - “How many satellites can be launched into orbit before astronomers on earth can observe the night sky without interruption?”

After 8 hours of tackling the question using countless ideas and equations to develop a report around it, we finally finished at 6pm!

Thank you to Ms Rhode for supervising and giving us the support we needed.

THE K ROAD TUKUTUKU PANEL PROJECT

In collaboration with the Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Manu Whenua, Nga Tumunako o Kahurangi students and other interested mainstream students are participating in the making of two large tukutuku panels which will be installed at the K’ road overpass as part of a contemporary art installation, utilizing traditional Maori practices and contemporary resources.

The project will take approximately 10 weeks to complete and our girls will be working on it with two expert weavers, Tessa Harris and Monica-Ann Brooks. The girls wil also have the opportunity to learn about the Mana Whenua of the area.

This is an exciting and important process which is creat-ing new and hopefully ongoing relationships between the school and local body communities

AGGS SPORT

Basketball Our Premier Basketball team is playing in the Senior A competition this year. The team has played four games - won 2 and lost 2 and are currently in 5th place. Nine of the current team are in Year 9 or Year 10 which is great for the future of the sport. Our Yr 9 & Yr10 Basketball team has had a quiet start to their season; they have 3 wins and 2 losses to date. We hope for more success in weeks to come. Hockey After winning the 9 a-side competition last year, our Hockey girls have started the season playing in C Grade with a win against Mt Albert Grammar School and a loss to Diocesan. Co-captains of the Hockey team are Saloni Parekh and Kendall Bramley. Congratulations to goal scorers in our winning game, Safa Nazari, Yr 10, Michelle Matthew, Year 10 and Armani Kingi-Burkhardt Yr 9 who scored 2 goals. Lacrosse Our Lacrosse team is yet to register a win after two rounds but both games were closely contested against Glendowie and St Marys Navy teams. Captain, Caitlin Malone, has taken on the coaching duties and is during a great job with our players at training. Lacrosse is the only sport we host at school on Thursdays after school at 4.00pm. We are keen to welcome new players to the team. Badminton We had over 80 students trial for our Badminton teams. 30 players were selected in 6 teams to play on Mondays (B Grade) and Thursdays (C & D Grades) Captain – Lumina Mendonca and assistants Ranae Bishop and Esther Blackmore have been coaching and helping the “learners” to understand the basics of the game. Currently, five of our six teams are in “first place” in their sections, and our Monday night team is in second place. Thank you to Ms Sabbage, Ms Krishnan and Ms Flannery for supporting our Badminton girls.

Netball Netball trials were held in February for our Junior and senior teams. Despite the disruption caused by Covid 19 we have almost doubled our teams from 2019, going from seven teams to twelve. This is in no small measure due to the hard work of our Office gurus— Ms Whenuaroa, Ms Hunia and Mrs Stowers. We also welcomed Ms Paula Smith to the coaching staff. Ms Smith is a PE teacher at AGGS and is also Appren-tice coach to the Northern Mystics ANZ Premiership team. We are very fortunate to have her coach our 10A Netball team. Our Premier team has made it back into Premier 1 for the first time since 2016. A massive achievement for our net-ball girls. All teams started competition on Saturday 25 July and competition will run for 10 weeks in Term 3.

Congratulations to our Year 9 team which placed first in the Combined Points Netball Tournament on 5 August and to our Year 10A team which came second . The first time our teams have done so well in many years.

Football Thank you to Mr Dave Rewi and Ms Sam Hunia for taking our Football team for training. The team has had some early success winning its first game against Kings College 2nd XI by 15-0. The 2nd game was to be against St Kents but St Kents had to forfeit the game and the team has won it’s third game against Baradene 6—0. Way to go! Our Football captains for 2020 are Fatima Abd Allah and Savannah Vaega. U15 Rugby This year we have introduced an U15 Rugby team into our rugby programme. Building on the success of our U15s Condors 7 team (which placed 2nd at Condors 2019) we have seen a “massive rise” in Juniors wanting to play rugby this year. We are also very fortunate to have established a partnership with Auckland University Rugby Club this year and our U15 girls rugby team is playing in the Auckland U15 Girls rugby competition under the University Rugby club. Our U15 rugby team has played three games so far and has had “emphatic wins” over College Rifles, Papatoetoe Rugby and Eden Grammar Tech. We are very fortunate to have Mr Lucky Smythe and Mr Dave Rewi as our coaches for the U15s team. Both coaches were an integral part of our U15s Condors team success in 2019.

Rugby 10s Our Rugby 10s team has had a mixed start to the season. Our girls notched up their first win of the season by beating Mangere College and last week they had a narrow loss to Mt Roskill in the last possession of the game. An intense and gut-wrenching loss. The team is in good spirits however and the rugby season is looking good for our girls. We also recruited Hayley Pilato (former student in 2018) as Assistant coach to Mrs Stowers.

Rugby League

Building on making the inaugural final in 2019, there has been “big interest” in students wanting to play Rugby League for the school. Over 50 students trialled for Rugby League and 20 players were selected. The team has had a dream start to the season, by beating two of the strong schools in the competition – Aorere College and Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate and to date, the team has won all four games and sit at the top of their competition. Our girls are training very hard and have set high expectations to make the Grand Final in 2020.
