COVER STORY

THEi exhibition hall of THEi’s Chai Wan Campus is equipped with a 20-meter wide interactive media touch screen. THEi has already developed the first interactive app for the wall which can help students with their research and can prime students in advance of field trips. The ability to build a library of bespoke apps for the wall will make it an invaluable resource for students across all faculties, providing an immersive way to engage with any topic. The scale and versatility of the interactive media touchscreen will ensure that it becomes a central part of both the social and educational life of THEi.

The first International Conference on Applied Education, Technology and Innovation (THEi AETI) was held between 16 and 18 April. Academics and practitioners, industry partners, education entrepreneurs and innovators engaging with Education 4.0 attended to tell their breakthrough stories. Education 4.0 refers to the impact of automation on the world of education, work and everyday life. In the applied degree sector, significant change and transformation is occurring as leaders, educators and partners evolve SMART campus environments to include blended learning, artificial intelligence, data analytics, BYOD devices, process automation and engage in curriculum renewal for and with industries and professions. In initiating AETI, THEi seeks to evolve a global community to share case studies, engage in critical discussion and spearhead leadership, addressing the paradigm shift in new educational practice.

The visit to HKTVmall was arranged by Dr Irene Szeto for students of Retail Management, enabling students to observe the operation of the novel robotic pick and pack system imported from Germany earlier this year.

THEi is the 1st higher education institute in Hong Kong to be invited to HKTVmall’s new logistics hub. The visit helped students studying the Global Supply Chain Management module to experience in real life the systems they have learned about in class. Students witnessed the company’s efficient management and operation, but they were also impressed by HKTVmall’s new business model and state-of-the-art supply chain technologies. This collaboration opportunity helped to highlight the latest developments in the retail industry, something of real practical value to the students.

The Pastry Chefs

Tommy Ng’s career had a flying start when, in 2018, he won the Young Kam Fam award for his project 100% Island Material. The project was inspired by an insight into the process of recycling glass, during which the material is crushed and turns into sand. Thus, a bottle that is used for a few minutes of indulgence is transformed into a substance that will last for millennia, or as Tommy puts it, island-building material. This year, Tommy represents Hong Kong at the Young Lions Competition in Cannes, France, a prestigious global competition for outstanding young advertising creatives. We spoke to Tommy about his time at THEi, and how it prepared him to start his career...

What skills and knowledge did take away from your time at THEi?

THEi Advertising provided me with an all-round design education and internship opportunities. Graduating from THEi, I am well- equipped with a holistic understanding of the advertising industry and a strong portfolio. With the knowledge and industry exposure I gained in THEi, I became more competitive in pursuing my career as an expert in advertising.

Why did you choose to study Culinary Arts and Management (CAM) at THEi?

Jan: I’ve loved cooking since I was in secondary school, so I hope to enter the food and beverage industry in the future. I choose THEi CAM because only THEi provides this type of degree programme in Hong Kong. THEi CAM provides practical skills as well as focusing on management training, so THEi CAM programme will enrich my career path. Angel: I heard about THEi CAM during a lecture of my secondary school. I love cooking and it’s my ideal job.

Which culinary style do you like most?

Jan: I prefer western cuisine, especially pastry. Also, I enjoy creating different flavours of cake and dessert. Angel: I love western cuisine the most, such as pasta and steak. I learned so many things during the process. Researching different recipes and making better dishes are what I like to do.

What inspires you?

Jan: I believe desserts can make people happy, that’s the way I enjoy making them, and it’s interesting to understand the stories behind the desserts we eat. I am addicted to baking and decorating,

The Art Director

Can you tell us more about your internship?

While I was studying in THEi, I had an internship in a 4A’s advertising agency, where I took part in advertisement design and promotional work on a large project named Hong Kong Summer Fun, for the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

How do you now apply the skills you learnt at THEi?

The mode of teaching in THEi is very similar to actually working at an agency. THEi provided a project outline to students, and students would create an advertising brief. At THEi, we had lots of chances to visit different design studios. Also, THEi provided different useful technical courses to students.

What contribution do you hope to make to your industry?

I would like to make a creative contribution, and that’s the reason that I choose to enter the advertising industry. Advertising seems to be the only one industry that combines creativity and commercial interests. I’d also like to recognise the people who have helped me on my way, such as my tutor and my boss right now. Because I realise everyone needs a good mentor in advertising.

because there are many creative ways to do it. So, I hope to create more special desserts and make more people happy! Angel: When I was younger, my father made dinner every night. I still remember how good that was. So, I want to share the love with others through cooking.

What are your career ambitions?

Angel: Jan and I have run an online cake shop since 2018. We focus on selling customised alphabet cakes. There are many different flavours and cake sizes for customers to choose. We love our work because it allows us to do what we want to do.Jan: We have successfully applied for the THEi INNOV 8 Enterprise Start-up programme, which will provide funding to expand our business.

What opportunities has THEi provided you with?

Angel: We traveled to Taiwan to display and sell pastries at a Mother’s Day event in the Regent Taipei Hotel; they invited 12 shops from different countries. Jan: THEi supported us going to Taipei as well as attending other culinary competitions. I have attended two; Cooperate with President and 2018 K-Food Hong Kong International Culinary Championship. These competitions helped

Winner of the 2018 Young Kam Fan Award, Tommy Ng graduated from THEi with a BA (Hons) in Advertising. He now works as Assis-tant Art Director at Grey Group Hong Kong

to broaden our horizons and enrich my teamwork and time-management skills.

What were the most interesting aspects of these events?

Jan: Working with people from different cultures taught us a lot. And we were interviewed and made a cake live in front of the press, it is an unforgettable experience for us.Angel: It was our first time speaking and making a presentation in front of many reporters. We were so nervous! Also, we had to work overnight to prepare four flavours of cake - we spent 18 hours in the kitchen on the first day!

TEACHING EXCELLENCE TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Why did you choose to teach in THEi?

Developing a new degree programme is a big challenge, and a great application for my ten years of teaching experience in the field. I am passionate about Aircraft Engineering, especially in the area of aircraft technology and aerodynamics.

What are the aims of the Aircraft Engineering (AE) programme?

To fulfil high-quality workforce needs of the aircraft engineering and maintenance industry. Our key mission is to provide an integrated vocational and professional education to students so that they can cope with the complex and ever-changing requirements of Aircraft Engineering.

Any unique and innovative teaching facilities to support

the programme?

Apart from THEi campus, our students have their practical training in different places such as HAECO, CASL, Government Flying Service and Guangzhou Civil Aviation College. We wish to cooperate with more organisations in the future to enrich our student training experience.

How does the AE programme prepare students to become professionals? The programme is designed to prepare students to sit the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) HKAR-66 CAT B1.1 aircraft maintenance license examination. In addition to the main course areas, students can learn aircraft maintenance engineering skills, aircraft design concepts and basic skills in repairing aircraft. Another special feature is that after completing

THEi signed a memorandum of cooperation with a group of airlines. In addition, VTC has been approved by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department as a HKAR-147 aircraft maintenance training institution, allowing THEi to offer both relevant bachelor degrees and HKAR-66 Cat B1.1 basic training courses.

more than 1,100 hours of internships, graduates can apply for a professional license for at least two years in a company approved by the Civil Aviation Department. In general, graduates from non-aircraft engineering degrees are required to hold at least 5 years of experience in aircraft engineering before they can obtain a license. In contrast, this degree represents a fast track into the industry.

What do you foresee in the future of AE in Hong Kong?

As Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest international hubs, there is a huge workforce requirement in handling the high volume of passenger aircraft. However, a lack of talented workforce supply has been a bottleneck in the development of the industry over the years. This is expected to worsen by the time HKIA has finished its third runway project in 2024, coupled

with continuous growth in air traffic. Therefore, the rapidly developing AE industry not only provides graduates with lots of placements and job opportunities, but also establishes various professional attributes which benefit each graduate’s career path by offering them opportunities to increase their upward mobility.

What are the career prospects after completing this programme?

Graduates will be capable of taking duties in the aircraft maintenance industry, airlines, aircraft engineering industry, with aircraft manufacturers or other related engineering fields. For example, students can serve as an aircraft engineering designer, technical support officer, aircraft maintenance planner or airworthiness officer. They can be promoted to aircraft maintenance engineer, aircraft engineer and even managerial positions.

TWO OF THEI’S HIGHLY SKILLED AND KNOWLEDGE-ABLE SPECIALIST TEACHERS EXPLAIN HOW THEY PREPARE STUDENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Dr Dawn AU Ching Tung, Programme Leader of Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy (CMP)

Why did you choose to teach at THEi?

Because the programmes at THEi are very practical and THEi benefits from a close relationship with the industry, which enhances the practicability of the courses.

What is the aim of the Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy programme?

Problem-solving is one of the key elements we want our students to master. Chinese Medicine is a very complex industry, our programme includes courses ranging from the sourcing of raw medicine, transportation, manufacturing to QC. Our students have diverse exposure to the whole production chain.

Are there any unique and innovative teaching facilities to support the programme? We’re developing virtual reality technology which will mimic a pharmacy, it provides students

with realistic experiences during their training and assessment and helps students learn how to combine medicines in the right doses.

Do students obtain any professional recognition upon graduation?

Currently, no licensing is required. We’re working closely with the government in shaping the professional requirements for Chinese Medicine Pharmacists in Hong Kong. Hence, our programme is designed to align with the requirements. For now, we are recognised by Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Pharmacists Association. The students are also advised to take professional examinations in Mainland China.

Do students need to complete work-integrated learning?

Our students are required to complete 400 working hours prior to graduation. We also have an Earn & Learn programme, involving partnerships with big corporates to provide paid

internships. The programme includes rotation to different departments, exposing students to a diversified job scope. This programme allows students to gain hands-on practical skills and consolidate their knowledge upon completion. This makes our students really stand out in the job market.

How large is the industry demand such specialised degree-holders? The government is taking a proactive role in the development of the industry. It shows there will be increasing demand in the market for talents in the field. And companies are eager to provide scholarship and internship positions to our students. Our students are ready to work in every role throughout the production chain, including QA, QC, Medicine Identification, Medicine production, and frontline advisory. Our programme trains our students with a diverse skill set which allows them to be well-prepared for any role in the market.

What do you predict for the future development of CMP in Hong Kong?

This is the best time ever to enter the industry. Hong Kong’s government has solid plans for the development of Chinese Medicine, including the establishment of the Chinese Medicine Hospital in Tseung Kwan O, a Quality Check Facility and allocation of HK$500 million to support the development of Chinese Medicine.

Do you have any plans for student exchange programmes in the future?

We’re launching an exchange programme with UBC in Canada and Universities in China. In the past, we have worked with UBC on related programmes, including healthcare and Food Science. In China, we have connections with Nam Jing University of Chinese Medicine, Shang Hai Chinese Medicine University and Shan XI University of Chinese Medicine and we expect to arrange exchange opportunities with these universities.

THIS IS THE BEST TIME EVER TO ENTER THE INDUSTRY. HONG KONG’S GOVERNMENT HAS SOLID PLANS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHINESE MEDICINE.
