FOREWORD

The publication “Macedonia in Figures” contains numerous data and interesting mini-facts about our country, and it represents a type of a small statistical yearbook.

Several novelties have been introduced in this edition. One of them is the data on sustainable development indicators, which have multi-dimensional character and reflect the economic, social, environmental and, to some extent, the institutional dimension of sustainable development.

In the past period, the State Statistical Office invested a lot of efforts to harmonise the methodologies for collecting and disseminating statistical data in order to provide comparable statistical data with the member states of the European Union and with the candidate countries.

Based on the achieved harmonisation of standards and methodologies, this edition for the first time contains comparable data about the Republic of Macedonia with the member states and with the candidate countries for membership in the European Union.

Each member state is presented only with some basic data distributed in tables and charts.

I sincerely hope that this publication will provide you with useful and interesting data about the Republic of Macedonia.

POPULATION BY DIFFERENT TERRITORIAL LEVELS

The territorial distribution of the population in the Republic of Macedonia shows significant disproportion. 57.8% of the population live in the cities (there are 34 cities in the Republic of Macedonia), the highest concentration being in the capital, Skopje (20.5%).

Large part of the rural settlements (the total number of settlements is 1728) are completely depopulated (141 settlement) or have extremely small number of inhabitants, and in the near future, as a result of the unfavorable age structure (old population), will have no population.

On the other hand, in a relatively small number of rural settlements (mostly located in the western and north-eastern parts of the country), the concentration of the population is very large.

The number of school entrants in primary and lower secondary education has decreased over the years, as well as the total number of students.

The number of enrolled students in primary and lower secondary education in the school year 2009/2010 is lower by 17.3% compared with 1999/2000.

Unlike primary and lower secondary education, the situation is better in upper secondary education and tertiary education, where the coverage of the enrolled students has been increased.

In upper secondary education, the number of enrolled students in 2009/2010, compared with 1999/2000, was higher by 4.4%.

Further processing participation in the exports and imports decreased from 21.3% of the total trade volume in 2005 to 17.5% in 2009. In the exports the share of further processing decreased from 32.1% in 2005 to 30.2% in 2009, while in the imports it decreased from 14.4% in 2005 to 10.8% in 2009.
