Dear Library faculty and staff members:

On behalf of the Library Staff Association, I welcome you, both old and new employees, to another year at the University Library. We hope that this year will be a prosperous one for all. Our officers for 1975/76 (Linda Swartz, President; Ruth McBride, Vice President; Betty Livingston, Secretary-Treasurer; Mary Ceibert, member-at-large) all seem ready for this year and are hoping we can help the staff in some way. Your comments and suggestions are our only way of knowing what you want.

This fall we are planning a reception to greet new members and renew old acquaintances. Also, we will host one or more courses on pulmonary resuscitation given by the Illinois Heart Association for those staff members interested. More information on this will follow.

Minutes of the Annual Business Meeting, May 21, 1975, Library Staff Lounge:

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 P.M. by Margaret Webb, President. The minutes of the 1974 meeting were read and amended as follows:

During the year Paula Watson resigned as chairman of the Lounge Committee and was replaced by Veronica Walker and Jean MacLaury.

The treasurer's report and reports of the Staff Bulletin, Exhibits, and Lounge Committees were read and approved. The Select Committee on Lounge Improvement reported that no action had been taken during the year.

The Spring Sale, April 24, was discussed. Chairmen of the sale committees were: Plants—Nina Mansfield and Barbara Haas; Baked goods—Betty Livingston; Books--Ruth McBride.

The Nominating Committee introduced the slate of officers for 1975-76:

Vice-President and President-elect: Ruth McBride Secretary-Treasurer: Betty Livingston Member-at-large: Mary Ceibert

The slate was unanimously approved. Linda Swartz will be President in 1975-76,

Linda Swartz annouced that one member of the Staff Association is to serve on the Long-Range Planning Committee, Elaine Albright moved that the President each year serve on this committee. The motion carried.

The Fall Reception was discussed. It was emphasized that more effort should be made to see that new staff members are introduced, preferably by heads of departments. Decisions on whether to have a program, receiving line, etc. should be made by the Vice-President.

New committee chairmen were announced:

Mrs. Webb announced that the following wording change should be made in the Constitution:

There was no objection to the change.

Mrs. Webb announced that volunteers will be needed to clean the lounge chairs. An announcement will be placed in the Staff Bulletin.

Pat Stenstrom moved that $100.00 be contributed to the Friends of the Library as a memorial to Dr. White and Allan Wilson. The motion carried*

It was suggested that the lounge be kept locked on weekends. It is difficult to find someone to be in charge of locking it. It was announced that funds are available to repair lounge equipment.

Since there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

A TRIBUTE TO Many people are presented watches when they retire; Eva EVA FAYE BENTON Faye Benton was given her gold watch in I960, fifteen years

before she retired, by a number of graduate students in English who wrote of their gratitude for flthe faith and interest you show in each and every one of us; your gift of understanding 'our side of the question,1 and your memory of what each of us is doing."

Then and always Eva Faye ran a people-oriented library; then and always she gave her attention and time to the faculty and students unstintingly. She knew well most of those who used the English library, and you could not enter the place more than three times before she also knew what you were interested in and what kind of problem you were working on. If you could not find a book, she would go find it for you herself; if it was not on the shelf, she knew what color it was, how big, and whom she had seen reading it last. Her sound knowledge of what was inside the books made her help doubly valuable. Gwynne Evans put this best in his response to a graduate student's question, "How would you find that out?11 "Ifd ask Eva Faye, of course," replied Gwynne. Another colleague admonished a seminar group to which he had just assigned a problem: "Remember, you are to work on this for at least an hour before you ask Eva Faye.rt One of Eva Faye's students-many of them now teach at the University of Illinois and at other schools—wrote her recently to say "you can't imagine how often your name comes up when old Illinois grad students get together and we're reminiscing about the struggles of graduate school-—and we all agree we would never have made it without your know-how and generous help." More formal thanks have been recorded in the prefaces to a steady stream of books over the past forty-one years; these have been heartfelt and genuine tributes to Eva Faye Benton, worded with a fervor far beyond the call of custom. She has deserved it all, and more.

About 2,300 persons in the nation's capital, on its 200th anniversary year, were asked to sign their names after a key paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. The People's Bicentennial Commission, which sponsored the "poll,11 reported the following:

Forty-seven percent of those asked didn't recognize the Declaration, and 68 percent wouldn't sign it. Of those who agreed to sign, 83*5 percent didn't know what it was. Of those who refused to sign, 83 percent recognized it,

Only one out of four at the Justice Department signed it; at the Pentagon, only one out of five wrote their names. Nearly half on Capitol Hill, where politicians abound, added their names. This was the highest of 12 different locations.

Said one person who refused to sign: "Since I work for the government, I'd better not do it*"

Ever wonder what Iran is doing with all the money they are getting from running up the cost of oil? Well, there is some consolation in the news that the Shah of Iran is going to build a library to serve the kingdom of Iran in honor of his family. The cost of the building alone will be $180,000,000! And when it comes to stocking the building with library materials, the sky will be the limit. Not satisfied with just one little library building to serve Iran, the Shah has decided to build thirty more in areas of the country to reach all the people with library service.

The same week that brought the news of the big doings in Iran saw President Ford veto the Educational Appropriations Act cutting off funds for American public, academic and institu­tional libraries. Looks like oil is not the only shortage we suffer in the U.S.

Elaine Albright, head of the Illinois Reference and Research Center in the Library, was recently elected to the Council of the American Library Association, Her term extends from 1975 to 1979, The Bulletin extends sincere congratulations to Elaine.

RIENTATION Taped, self-guided orientation tours of the libraries are now available at Biology, Chemistry, Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. Since these tours are in the pilot stage of develop­ment, outside opinion and comments are welcome—evaluation forms are provided. Taped instruction on the use of Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Index Medicus and Science Citation Index are also available, so come on over and give them a try.

The primary purpose of the Library is to support the basic sciences curriculum of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, the clinical curriculum, and the Area Health Education System curriculums of Occupational Therapy, nursing, and Medical Art. This involves supplying (1) required reading for courses; (2) supplementary reading for courses; (3) a basic reference collection.

The secondary purpose is to provide a basic collection aimed at the development of the well-rounded health professional, both for those who are students and for the practicing health professional. This involves providing a basic collection of standard works, but not providing for the full research needs of the faculty, which are served by the Biology Library and other campus libraries of the University of Illinois. The collection also serves as a basic reference core for health professionals of Region 3~B* The library will provide a small collection of outstanding current periodicals and back files of five-ten years, space permitting*

The medical program is so designed that the medical student spends a large portion of his time in the library. The library's collection consists of approximately 8,000 print and non-print items in the fields of basic sciences, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, and medical art, and is available 18 hours a day. In addition to these there are PLATO terminals in the library; available on PLATO computer programs designed to assist the students in clinical procedures as well as basic science disciplines.

The medical student is given 10 clinical problems (e.g. pregnancy) to work through in the 10 months of the program. He/she must pass four levels of examination. The first two levels are pretest and post-test to each unit, with answers provided so that the student may correct his weaknesses. The Level III examination is administered after the student has completed all units dealing with a particular clinical problem.

Following the Level III exam, the student's Medical Advisor (MDA) and Campus Faculty Advisor (CFA) decide whether the student is prepared to take the Level IV examination. The MD Evaluator (MDE), who is another area physician, administers an oral evaluation by stressing the relationship of the clinical problem to the basic sciences,

Thus, the School of Basic Medical Sciences at Urbana-Champaign offers a program which is much more than just academia. The curriculum theory is founded on real interaction with practicing physicians, hospitals and clinics and the entire on-going patient care process with the library serving as the basic resource center for information.

SERVICES OF THE LIBRARY Interlibrary Loan OF THE HEALTH SCIENCES

Books and periodicals not found in the libraries of the Urbana Campus may be requested on interlibrary loan by faculty, staff and students of the School of Basic Medical Sciences—Urbana, or by any health professional in Region 3B. All other depart­ments must use the interlibrary services of the Reference Department of the Main Library.

Computer Services

On request the librarian or assistant librarian will perform Medline, Toxline, or Cancerline searches for patrons. Informa­tion sheets on these services are available at the circulation desk of the Library of the Health Sciences*

Tours

For an orientation to the library, a self-paced taped orientation tour is available at the Circulation Desk. Further orientation programs may be arranged with the librarian or assistant librarian.

In addition to the above listed services provided to the faculty, staff and students on this campus, the Library of Health Sciences provides an extension service to the 23 affiliated hospital libraries in Region 3B. Plans this year include a fall and spring workshop for Region 3B medical librarians, a newsletter, and a bookmobile-type service.

JURY DUTY Robert Delzell, Director of Personnel, has accepted an appointment as Chairperson of the Joseph W. Lippincott Award Jury for 1976. This award, one of the major ALA awards, consisting of a check for $1,000, a medal, and a citation of achievement, is made to a librarian for distinguished service in the profession of librarianship, such service to include outstanding participation in the activities of professional library associations, notable published professional writing, or other significant activitiy on behalf of the profession and its aims. The award is presented during the ALA annual conference, usually during the inaugural banquet.

campus would like to extend an invitation to all library staff members to attend its open house, scheduled for October 16. This date coincides with the ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication program of the Medical Sciences Building, corner of Matthews and California in Urbana. Further information concerning the open house will be given in a future issue of Library Office Notes.

KUDOS To reassure thosestaff members who wonder just how much the resources of the University of Illinois Library are appreciated outside the immediate community, the following letter from a young man in Barry, Illinois is offered. It was returned with some overdue books borrowed on interlibrary loan through the Illinois Reference and Research Center,

"Sorry for holding these books for such a long period of time. They played a fundamental role in the development of my science project and research paper. Not only did I receive top honors and awards at the local and area science fairs, but I exhibited my project at the Assembly Hall, U. of I., in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science !fStateff

Science Exposition. There I received a first outstanding in project session along with a U.S. Army award. To conclude this year's competition I participated in the 26th International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Oklahoma City, where students from our 50 states and several foreign countries exhibit. I was honored with a Motorola award in recognition of outstanding achievement in the area of electronics and communication. I also received a 3rd overall physical division (toughest competition). The awards amounted to checks for 100 and 50 dollars respectively. I hope to compete next year (this project is far from complete). Therefore, I must thank you for the beneficial role you played in giving me a successful year. Thank you....n

With results like that, who can doubt the benefits of interlibrary loan?

EXHIBITS POLICY The Staff Association's Library Exhibits Committee has developed the following policy statement on library exhibits:

1) Library personnel should be given priority over other outside groups in the university for presenting exhibits in ( the cases located on the first floor corridor of the Library.

2) A short written proposal for each exhibit should be submitted to the chairperson or vice-chairperson of the Exhibits Committee well in advance of the proposed exhibit. This proposal will then be reviewed by the Exhibits Committee.

3) Exhibits should not editorialize personal opinions, viewpoints, etc., but should inform and educate the public. They should also advertise resources available in the University of Illinois Library. Emphasis should be on scholarship, education, and library materials,

4) Exhibits will be considered according to their content, quality of proposal, originality, and appropriateness of subject matter to the time of year the exhibit is to be presented.

Proposals for next year's exhibits should be sent to Sara de Mundo Lo, 425 Library, or to Michele Finerty, 220S Library.

Inadvertently, Ms. Rayna Baker's exhibit on Christmas music was not mentioned in the schedule of exhibits of the Library Staff Association Exhibits Committee annual report, 1974/75, published in the last Staff Bulletin. Ms. Baker's scholarly exhibit was on view during the latter part of December 1974 and January 1975. In addition, the exhibit on Spanish-speaking minorities in the U.S. for the month of November, was prepared by Estela Elizondo Radovancev and Sara de Mundo Lo.

This August I returned to Taiwan, Republic of China. It was my first visit since arriving in the U.S. seven years ago. Travelling on the island, I enjoyed seeing mountains, lakes and waterfalls around me again. I satisfied my appetite for fresh sea foods of all kinds, and filled my suitcase with inexpensive but well-made clothes—-in my size!

Also on my schedule were visits to some interesting libraries. I visited six in Taipei, the capital. They were the National Central Library, three university libraries, a municipal library, and a room at Sun Yat Sen's memorial hall, similar to the Lincoln Room here at Illinois.

The library system in Taiwan is largely modelled after that of the United States. The National Central Library is the counterpart of the Library of Congress. Newly copyrighted books are deposited in that library, and a monthly list with cumulations of its newly cataloged titles is published. The library is now in the process of microfilming the Chinese rare books and first editions of classics in its collections.

Libraries remain a quiet place to study. In Taiwan summer is the season of examinations at all levels and of all kinds. They include the senior high school entrance examination, civil service examinations, etc. These examinations account for the overwhelming number of studious readers in most of the libraries I visited.

Library service to patrons seems to concentrate heavily on checking out books. Reference service is either not readily available or not generally known to the public. One librarian told me that they usually get only five or six reference questions a day. Most students are encouraged to bypass the library and resort directly to government agencies for statistical data for their research.

Libraries are a place where books are stored, rather than a place that provides easy access to information. Books have to be paged out of the closed stacks for all patrons. Reference books in some libraries are locked in glass cupboards. Censorship is sometimes inevitable under a protective govern­ment during an era of political uncertainty.

The Chinese language does not have an alphabet; the cards in the card catalog are arranged by the number of strokes of the first character of the author's last name, subject heading, or title. This arrangement, the most common practice, can be cum­bersome if the user's count of strokes differs from that decided by the library. In Western countries, there is no such confusion: A always precedes B.

In recent years, Taiwan has emerged as an exporting country in the world market. Native merchants will increasingly rely on the most up-to-date and correct information to survive in the keen competition of international trading. This practical demand for information, accompanied by the apparent increase in wealth on Taiwan in recent years, should precipitate new trends of library development and service in the near future.

EXHIBIT An exhibit of materials dealing with the humane treatment of animals is on view in the first floor display cases in the Library.

The philosophical ideas for the humane treatment of animals date back to 18th century England and the writings of Jeremy Bentham. Copies of his Introduction to the principles of morals and legislation are on view as well as copies of the Parliamentary debates of 1809, which led to the passage of the first effective legislation protecting the rights of animals.

The development of the humanitarian movement in the U.S. is shown through publications from the 19th and 20th centuries, including magazines, posters, teaching materials and children's books ranging from First aid for insects to A Zoo for you. Also shown are materials on careers in humane work, from animal control officer to zoo director.

LETTER OF THANKS The Catalog Department has received a letter from Allan Wilson's cousin in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Here are excerpts from the letter:

"I have just learned of the contribution made to the local library in Allan1s memory by the U. of I. Library. I am deeply touched by this, not only because it was so appropriate, but also because it tells me how much you who worked with him liked and respected him.

"Allan and I grew up together, and I shall miss him the rest of my life. In some way? my learning how his colleagues felt about him, as evidenced by their thoughtful and generous memorial, has made his premature death easier to accept.

"Please let those who contributed to the memorial fund how much this was appreciated by his family and friends here in Fayetteville."

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO JOINS ILLINET

The University of Chicago Libraries has joined the Illinois Library and Information Network (ILLINET) to provide nonfiction materials not held by other members of the network.

The University Libraries is noted especially for its collections in studies of South Asia, the Far East, the Ancient Near East, and Slavic subjects, and of 18th century English drama. It will serve as a Special Resource Center of "last resource11 with the John Crerar Library and the four reference and research centers in the state—the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, the Chicago Public Library, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and the Illinois State Library.

FACULTY PUBLICATION Creativity in the communicative arts: a. selective bibliography, 1960-1970. Edited by Marvin E. Ceynar. Compiled by Dorothy Jorstad, Lorene Linder, Don Phillips, Jean Porter.

Eleven topics are covered in the bibliography: advertising, art, education, fiction, films, group communication, mass media, music, poetry, speech communication, and theater.

PSYCHED OUT Have you ever wished that all books in your field of interest could be housed in one location? Patrons often feel hindered that materials of their interest seem to be scattered through­out the library. One such person was M.J« Mandeville who attempted to bring his field of interest into one central location so all students could benefit from the collection. While working on his Ph.D. Mr. Mandeville became interested in reading books in the fields of parapsychology and occultism. The library did not have a collection which was very extensive nor consolidated in one area. Mandeville found it necessary to start his own library to pursue his studies further*

In 1966 Mandeville offered the collection to the University of Illinois and established an endowment for the purchase of books in the fields of parapsychology and occultism. Arrange­ments were to be made to house the collection in some part of the library that would be readily available to undergraduate students. It was decided that it would not be feasible to house a separate collection in the library. It was agreed that the usual classification would be followed but that a special catalog would be established and current acquisitions displayed. The catalog and current acquisitions1 display is housed in the Education and Social Science Library. The catalog offers a central location for people trying to locate materials in the fields of parapsychology and occultism.

Acquisitions of materials for the Mandeville collection have followed guidelines established through correspondence with Mr. Mandeville. In trying to describe the serious study of true occultism Mr. Mandeville notes that nThe subject is not easily defined and is not clearly delineated except by long study.ff Various journals in parapsychology and the occultism have been used in reviewing books for the collection. The collection tries to include the following materials, occultism, reincarnation, psychism, yoga (especially Raja yoga), esoteric Christianity, mysticism and many others which concentrate in these general areas. Those areas which are not emphasized are witchcraft, satansim, voodoo, black magic and shamanism.

USE THE CARD CATALOG

A January, 1975, article in Administrator's Digest reported the results of a survey of public library users in a Canadian public library on the user's view of the card catalog. The results showed the younger the patron, the more likely he was to use the catalog; most users knew only author, title, or subject desired but usually not more than one; and two people will give up for every one that seeks help from the staff

after failure to locate the needed information in the catalog.

After finding the entry, 64% looked only at the call number and not at the other information on the card, and 94% went from the catalog directly to the shelf. Filing rules were a major stumbling block to patrons not used to spelling out numbers and abbreviations* Finally, many patrons were handicapped because of incorrect titles and incorrect names of authors.

"EDITORS STUDENT:—May I say a few words in your paper on a subject which may be of some importance to many of us? I refer to the college library and reading room. At present it is open only about two hours per day, and during this time many of the students have recitations, and are therefore debarred, as it were, altogether from its use. ATTENTION REFERENCE For those who have tried, unsuccessfully, to verify titles by LIBRARIANS! the Russian "author" Vadim Vadimovitch: this author is the

narrator, totally fictitious, of Nabokov's latest book, Look at the Harlequins, At the beginning of the novel, Nabokov lists a number of other titles published by this narrator. Forewarned is forearmed: neither the narrator nor his publi­cations exist, except in the mind of the author (and readers wanting to read other titles by f!Vadimovitch") !

CORRECTION There was an error in the recent Bulletin trivia quiz: the Library has indeed subscribed to Playgirl, though the issues have not yet been catalogued.

LECTURE Mrs. Clara Jones, Director of the Detroit Public Library and Vice-President/President-elect of the American Library Associa­tion, will speak on Aspects of Urban Librarianship, October 8, 1975, in room 66.

ALLERTON INSTITUTE The Twenty-first Annual Allerton Library Institute, sponsored by the Graduate School of Library Science, will be held November 9-12 at Allerton House, near Monticello. This year's topic is "Major classification systems: The Dewey centennial."

With the centennial of the first edition of Dewey's classifi­cation system coming in 1876, the faculty of the School decided to devote the institute to a study of classification systems. The co-sponsor of the 1975 institute will be the Forest Press, Albany, N.Y., publishers of the decimal classification. The institute, however, will concern itself not only with Dewey but with other major classification systems being used in English-speaking countries.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING Notes From Barbara Loomis on the Pre-Conference on Collective Bargaining in Higher Education: Its Implications for Governance and Faculty Status For Librarians.

On June 27 and 28, 1975 in San Francisco prior to the annual A.L.A. Conference, there was a Pre-Conference on Collective Bargaining in Higher Education: Its Implications for Governance and Faculty Status For Librarians, which as a representative of the APT Committee I attended. The following is a shortened compilation of notes from this conference. The proceedings of the conference will be published and sent to us enabling everyone to read the full texts. My complete notes are available from either the APT Committee records or from me. If any one is interested in this subject, the conference provided each participant with excellent materials and I will be glad to loan these materials to you. You can reach me in the Acquisitions Department of the Library

Collective bargaining is done by a bargaining unit'1. A "bargaining unit" denotes persons sharing a community of interests. This unit can be broadly based or narrowly based and it is an independent and separately funded organization. Collective bargaining costs money; it is important to know where the money is coming from. Collective bargaining involves a set of rules and you bargain for a change in these rules. There is no overall collective bargaining rule. Bargaining will not change the historical and cultural factors that existed before collective bargaining, rather the bargaining will take direction from them. Collective bargaining agreements may vary from detailed and specific criteria—-particularly in response to an administration which refused to set criteria*—to very general criteria with encompassing generalities.

Collective bargaining is mainly a phenomena of public insti­tutions. No major high level research university has gone to collective bargaining. Two-year institutions initially dominated the collective bargaining scene. The community colleges may have gone this route because they had less participation in policy making, because of faculty unrest and

and desire for higher wages, and because of an underdeveloped conception of faculty. Faculties involved in teaching are more conservative in their political views while the higher research faculty at the universities have more liberal views but their academic structure does not support collective bargaining. Governance systems do not deal effectively with salaries or working conditions, but so far collective bargaining units have not done so either.

Senates and unions are most compatible where there is distinc­tive separation jurisdictions. If faculty are managers and employees, when they bargain they end up bargaining with themselves. There is the possiblity that faculty senates may be interpreted as a labor organization since they often include very active administrators as members and having policy making members (administrators) as part of the senate may be held illegal. There is a court case concerning this pending at this time.

All three groups, the AAUP, AFT, and NEA, are opportunist and political. The personality and ideas of the local representative of these national organizations is more important than the organization's national stance since this person determines the direction of the bargaining on any individual campus regardless of the national posture of the groups.

Students are interested not in what is happening on campus, but what is happening in the legislature and the effect faculty collective bargaining will have on their student assistantships.

The idea that unionization has meant the taking of money from owners of property and giving of money to the blue collar worker by increasing wages is really false. The unions are effective in getting wages away from non-union wage earners and giving them to union wage earners. At Wayne State University unionization came about because non-faculty groups were doing so well by collective bargaining that faculty decided to unionize.

Labor unions are at their best at a moment of retrenchment. Collective bargaining presses hard to preserve academic salaries.

Librarians make up only 1% of the working force and academic librarians make up 17% of this 1%. Librarians as a group are not large enough to have strength. Librarians do not have as much bargaining power as the faculty at large; therefore, librarians do not want to go it alone but rather they should tie into any faculty group that organizes for a collective bargaining situation. In case a collective bargaining situation does occur, librarians must become active, visible, and hold key positions in collective bargaining units in order to improve their positions. The librarians1 lot will not change much even in a collective bargaining situation unless they are active in that collective bargaining situation.

TRUST FUND A longtime employee of the U. of I- Library has made the U. of I. Graduate School of Library Science a beneficiary of a trust fund under the terms of her will. Helen T. Stewart was assistant circulation from 1928 until her retirement in 1956. She was given the rank of instructor in 1945 and assistant professor in 1955.

The income from the trust she established will support at least one student annually in the library school. The terms of the will give preference to students from Iowa, but the director of the school may select any "worthy student11 to receive the award if there are no qualified lowans.

Her gift represents the largest bequest the library has ever received from an individual.

FACULTY NOTES The Graduate School of Library Science of the University of Illinois has recently appointed two new members to its faculty. Dr. Sylvia Goodfriend Faibisoff and Mr. Jerome Kenneth Miller will assume their positions in August, 1975*

Dr. Faibisoff recently completed her Ph.D. in information science at Case-Western Reserve University and will teach courses in the areas of library systems and public services. She has held the position of Executive Director of the South Central Research Library Council, Ithaca, New York, since 1968. Dr. Faibisoff is active in both the New York Library Association and the American Library Association.

Mr. Miller is currently working for his doctorate in education media at the University of Colorado. His areas of specializa­tion are audiovisual instruction and cataloging. Mr. Miller has been Coordinator of Audiovisual Library Services and Asst. Professor of Instructional Media at Central Washington State College since 1967. He has been active in regional and national committees concerned with the problem of copyright in the reproduction of materials.

RARE BOOK ROOM EXHIBIT

A new exhibit in the Rare Book Room (to run through October) shows selected notable recent acquisitions. Among the selections:

Defoe and Defoeiana. The U. of I. Library during the past two decades has been consciously attempting to add items written by Daniel Defoe to its collections. A large number of these originally came as portions of larger collections—principally as portions of the Nickell, the Sherburn, and the Hutchins Collections. As indicated by the most authoritative listing (John Robert Moore's A Checklist of the writings of Daniel Defoe), the canon of Defoe (taking into account the writings not certainly, but probably, by him) includes over 500 titles published during his lifetime. Moreover, the holdings of Defoe and Defoeiana at the U. of I. have become sufficiently noteworthy that the University is now one of the major locations in the English-speaking world.

The titles on exhibit were all purchased during the past fiscal year and are among the more substantial Defoe titles owned by the Library. The political topics which several of them reflect are typical of Defoe.

The Book Arts and Bibliography. In accordance with the Library's Acquisition Policy Statement, the Rare Book Room continues to collect secondary sources dealing with the book arts as well as bibliographies that relate to its collections.

Arranged chronologically are items that fall in the above cate­gories, as well as several items that are of primary value in illustrating firsthand the private press movement and also fine book production.

The presence of the two magnificent notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci in the National Library of Spain first became known to the world in 1965. Filled with fascinating drawings and notes on a wealth of subjects, the codices throw new light on Leonardo's monumental achievements as a scientist, inventor and engineer.

This facsimile edition was strictly limited to a thousand numbered sets, each in five volumes. The first two volumes contain Leonardo's notebooks. Volume three contains general commentary. In volumes four and five Leonardo's writing is transcribed into Italian and then translated into English.
