What is an International Recruitment Conference?

An International Recruitment Conference (IRC) is an event designed to facilitate the

recruitment process for international schools seeking new staff. You might know this as a job fair. Such conferences are high-energy events that some jokingly refer to as “speed dating” because of how many connections and interviews are made in a short time. Negotiations happen and contracts often are offered on the spot. c

Who may attend the IRCs?

All active ISS candidates are eligible to register and are not charged extra—beyond

the sign-up fee—to attend events…something our competitors don’t

Frequently Asked Questions

• Competitiveness with other

candidates: The large stateside

IRC in Atlanta attracts many

teaching teams, including those

already working abroad, as well

as administrative candidates,

counselors, and secondary

specialists.

• Hiring flexibility: Recruitment is

highly competitive, so although

many positions will be available,

it is important to consider many

locations and schools.

•   Nonteaching dependents:

Candidates with nonteaching

partners and additional

accompanying dependents may

find it difficult to secure interviews

at the IRCs.

•   Administrative and counseling

positions: Interviews for principals,

assistant principals, counselors, and

other school-wide administrators

are conducted at the IRCs, but

administrative positions tend to be

filled early in the recruiting season.

Start the process early to ensure

schools can view your file!

•   Research: Before the IRC, research

the schools attending and the

open positions. Send introductory

emails, and learn about the specific

requirements of schools you are

interested in. The more you know

about the position, the better able

you will be to sell yourself and

to target your candidacy for that

particular school. c

Suggestions for makingthe InternationalRecruiting Conferenceswork for you!1) Use technology and the ISS

system to really ‘show’ who you are as an educator. Make your profile pop with video and photos—don’t forget to put in a link to your website or blog. Our recruiters use the system all the time to learn more about each candidate, so upload supplementary letters of recommendation to make you stand out.

2) Maximize your time at the conference. Contact schools prior to the IRC and let them know that you are interested (and would like an interview). Reach out and set as much up ahead of time as you can, so when you arrive you have a great head start.

3) Make sure your travel plans allow you to attend school presentations. We will post conference schedules on the website, so make sure you check when school presentations are being held. We do encourage all to try to get to these. They are incredibly informative—and a great place to introduce yourself and start the networking!

4) Bring many copies of your resume. Yes, schools will have access to your online ISS file, but having copies of your resume in hand will very much help you introduce yourself and leave the recruiters with something to review—and hopefully something to use to contact you again!

5)  Interview Sign-up is where you will meet all the heads’ of schools and ask for interviews, which will occur later that day or on the following day(s). We encourage you to be open-minded and go for as many interviews as you can! Don’t limit yourself. There are great schools in every corner of this world, and we hope you will consider each and every one of them.

6) Do your research about all the schools! This is so important—and will help you make informed decisions.

Most of all, use the entire event to network, meet people and set up interviews! You will find plenty of opportunities to meet heads’ of schools—so be outgoing and introduce yourself…even if it is outside of Interview Sign-up! There will be socials, school presentations, and interactions in the various offices that we encourage you to use to your best advantage! c

offer. Please note that you must first establish a professional file with ISS before you may register for an IRC. You may attend as many events as you like—no invitation needed. c

Which IRC is right for you?

In 2015–2016, ISS is hosting a variety of conferences designed to meet the different needs of

our schools and candidates. When choosing which IRCs to attend, consider three important factors: timing, size, and location. Two of our events will be held prior to most winter breaks, making them great opportunities to stand out early. Our 2015–2016 events will begin with our Seattle IRC. After that, ISS will be in Bangkok, for our January 2016 IRC. If you will be travelling to the annual AAIE conference in Atlanta this February, consider extending your trip to join ISS at our Atlanta IRC. c

Here are some additional factors to consider when deciding which conference to attend:

Want to teach overseas but can’t fit a traditional job fair into your calendar? Join us for a virtual hiring event, something only ISS offers. Log on,

connect with recruiting schools, and set up interviews to take your career to the next level. We’ve combinedinterview sign-up with exciting new technology platforms to bring interviewing directly to your phone or laptop. And this now includes the ability to have a Skype conversation.

International Schools Services is proud to be the first to offer a virtual international recruiting event for schools and candidates worldwide. It offers the best parts of an IRC from the comfort of your home office or couch. Connect with schools early in the season and set up interviews. There’s no taking time away from school—just you, your laptop (phone or tablet), and hundreds of ISS recruiting schools connecting online. Everyone will be online at the same time, so you can instantly schedule your interviews.

With ISS iFair, finding a position has never been easier or more convenient.

Virtual Platform + Real Connections =Opportunity You Can’t Miss

How does it work? Schools are given the opportunity to create a virtual booth, which candidates will enter when the event is live. Each school can customize its booth with information such as logo and website, information about the school and country, salary and benefits packages, and open positions.

Recruiters will be online and waiting to talk to candidates. Candidates can enter as many booths as they like, queue, and communicate with recruiters.

All communication will be done via instant messaging so attending this event is truly “hassle-free”; there’s no pressure to check the lighting of your webcam or background noise. After this initial meeting, follow-up Skype interviews can be arranged.

About ISS: Serving International Educators for 60 Years

So you have eight professionals instead of just one. Your wish to work overseas is ours too—let’s make it happen together. c

“Because we had both built up good portfolios in the ISS system, the quality of discussions with recruiters ended up being better. By the time we began interviewing with schools, we were able to hone in more quickly on certain elements of our experience, and the school could take more time to see if we were a good fit for the school culture. We really appreciate this about the ISS system and will come back to you for our next job search!”

Candidate Portfolio: Offered Only by ISS

ISS candidates have access to all schools recruiting with us—you can view

videos, salaries and benefits; compare open positions; and connect directly with recruiters. Customized email alerts make sure that you learn about the latest jobs every day, and you can check your favorite schools to see which has posted new openings. Our

extensive network—built up over decades of relationships in the global education community—helps you learn what you need to know to make this very important decision.

Your candidate portfolio allows you to truly showcase yourself to recruiters, so make your dossier stand out. Be your own best advocate

(continued from page 1)

and build your portfolio. Recruiting today is changing dramatically, and our new online system is designed to give you an opportunity to present yourself in the best way possible. Your confidential references, certifications, and transcripts are required and serve as the basis of your standard ISS professional dossier/file.

But you can do so much more. We strongly encourage you to create a comprehensive online portfolio with additional supporting letters of recommendation, as well as photos, videos, alternative certifications, awards, or sample lesson plans. Because this is how schools will first learn about you, it’s essentially the “first impression,” and we encourage you to maximize this profile to highlight who you truly are, even before interviews start. Our robustsystem can support all that isneeded to have a strong onlinepresence—ISS is the only organization that offers such a comprehensive capability. c

Did you know…during last year’s launch of the ISS iFair, we facilitated 2,302 conversations between 433 candidates and 50 schools in our inaugural event alone? That was just the beginning; this year, we are offering three of these virtual job fairs, which will give you a competitive advantage in your search.

The Seattle IRC will be held right at the beginning of prime time in the recruiting season, so it will be a busy event. We expect a large number of schools and candidates to attend this event because this is a prime

time for job seekers and schools worldwide. This International Recruiting Conference continues to grow and be successful. Schools are beginning their search for quality educators, and many jobs are filled at this event.

Seattle may be known for its rain, progressive sensibilities, and grunge rock, but we believe it also should be known as a magnet for outstanding, adventurous educators who want to transport their careers. Whether you are in the Seattle metro area, Portland, Vancouver, or anywhere else and want to visit this IRC, we invite you to partake of this city’s charm and energy. Seattle boasts a unique landscape and many exciting attractions. It is on the water but surrounded by beautiful mountains, and includes such famous attractions as the Space Needle, Pike Place Market and its wildly entertaining fishmongers, and a vibrant music scene. Art attractions include the Seattle Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park, where the grounds include many native plants as well as eco-friendly features such as rainwater collection systems and a salmon habitat.

Need some additional exercise after walking around the city? Enjoy a day trip to Mt. Rainieror take the ferry to one of several islands. You can see the city by seaplane, ride one of the world’sbiggest Ferris wheels – the Seattle Great Wheel – or even travel by duck boat, which promises that you will “quack, laugh, and learn” your way around the Emerald City. Bangkok, Thailand

This will be the tenth year that ISS has hosted its Bangkok IRC. This recruitment

conference continues to be an exciting event, with more schools joining us from

all parts of the world. Opportunities will be available in schools in Latin America,

Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This will be the first recruiting event in 2016.

The city of Bangkok covers more than 1569 sq. km. of Thailand and is home to more

than nine million people. Because of its residents’ renowned hospitality, Bangkok has

a reputation as one of the most pleasant cities in the world. Among its attributes are

inspiring temples, ruins of ancient kingdoms, and delicious

cuisine. You can travel to its breathtaking palaces by way of the

Mae Nam Chao Phraya River for an authentic adventure. The

river is the main waterway through Bangkok and is fed

by countless canals that traverse the city. At one time, this

canal system earned Bangkok the name “Venice of the

East.” Although natives of Thailand still travel by way of the

canals, most visitors prefer the elevated rail system known

as the BTS Skytrain. Whether you travel by boat, train, or on

foot, you will be able to enjoy Bangkok’s rich culture. For more

information about Bangkok, please visit the Tourism Authority

Atlanta, Georgia USA

Join us for our largest US conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in February. We are heading to Atlanta with AAIE to hold our biggest job fair of the recruiting season at the Hyatt Regency downtown. As our biggest event of the year, this IRC will have a special day

exclusively for administrators, counselors, and psychologists (see box). Our Atlanta IRC hopes to be a successful place for both schools and candidates, and we would like you to join us there. Hundreds of schools will be joining us at this event, which immediately follows the AAIE Conference at the same hotel, and schools be looking for fill all their vacancies they still have open for the following year. Atlanta, which as one of the largest airports in the world, is an easy place to get in and out of, and this is going to be one of the best events of the recruiting season!

For a city just as ripe as fresh-picked Georgia peaches, Atlanta boasts booming cultural neighborhoods, great sports destinations, and wonderful museums and historic haunts. Take yourself back through time starting in historic Buckhead, home to Atlanta’s History Center, to learn about the Civil War. Then, head downtown to eat lunch at The Varsity, a gigantic drive-in restaurant. Next, go on to the Martin Luther King Historical Site or visit the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium. See a Braves baseball game at Turner Field or view Centennial Olympic Park, where the 1996 Summer Olympic Games took place. With a population of 420,000, Atlanta also is the top business city of the Southeast, centered in the heart of Georgia. Top brands, such as the Coca- Cola Company, AT&T Mobility, and Delta Air Lines are headquartered in Atlanta. The transportation hub of the South, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is ten miles from downtown, and Atlanta also is accessible via highway or Amtrak train. To get around in the city, take the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority subways and buses or go by car. Enjoy a beautiful, fun, historic, and artistic city with a warm climate, whose rich culture feeds a busy city’s appetite for adventure, food, shopping, and the finer things in life. Atlanta has undergone a tremendous transformation in the past couple of years, and it is time you experienced it! For additional information on Atlanta, visit the Atlanta, GA Guide for Travelers and Locals at www.Atlanta.net. c
