~ The Deaf Youth Center at the Yellowbox -Community Christian Church 1635 Emerson Lane,Naperville, IL.They have a great staff and volunteers who are eager to work with themission of the Deaf Youth Center. The program is centered aroundAmerican Sign Language yet they also provide voice interpretation forboth students and parents involved. The Deaf Youth Center meetseach month on the third Thursday and the program is free. Theprogram is open to youth, their siblings, parents, and friends (uponregistering for DYC). Programming usually begins with social time at5:30 followed by groups of sections including theatre, social skills,peer interaction, expressive learning, and sports/games/exercisesuntil 8pm. Mental Health and Deafness Resources corporateoffices have moved!

MHDR corporate offices are now located at 1941Rohlwing Road, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008. All of MHDR’s services remain active and have evenexpanded. Their services include, but are not limited to, thefollowing:

An inpatient unit located in Chicago’snorthwest suburbs, serving children andadolescents who are Deaf or Hard of Hearingand who have communication disordersGroup homes for children and adolescents.These are located in Chicago’s north suburbsand in the Bloomington /Normal area, licensedby Illinois DCFSEducational day school services approved byISBE (Illinois State Board of Education),serving students who reside in our grouphomes as well as students from surroundingcommunitiesOur newest group home is our CILA(Community Integrated Living Arrangement)serving four individuals, located inBloomington, ILDiagnostic Services, provided on site bymembers of our Diagnostic Team consistingof three psychologists, each of whom haveextensive background in testing and servicesto deaf and hard of hearing studentsNon-verbal therapies including art, drama, playand dance which provide creativedevelopment, positive and productive self-expression, increasing self-esteemCounseling services and follow-up provided onsite by psychologists and by additional humanservices disciplines as needed

Third Annual Deaf Can Do It Community Service Day onMay 1, 2014 Sets World Record

Deaf Can Do It Community Service Day broke therecord again. All students in Illinois who are deaf andhard of hearing were invited to participate in theThird Annual Deaf Can Do It Community ServiceDay on May 1, 2014. This year, the focus ofcommunity service was on local animal shelters. Atotal of 580 students participated in communityservice projects, breaking the 2013 world record of560 students as the Largest Group Of Deaf AndHard Of Hearing Students To Participate In ACommunity Service Project at recordsetter.com.

“The Division of Mental Health would like to welcomeJessena Williams, MSW, LCSW, who joined theDepartment of Mental Health on June 2, 2015 in theposition of Statewide Coordinator for the Deaf andHard of Hearing. Jessena comes to us from theVeterans’ Administration in St. Louis and was aliaison for transitional housing programs forhomeless veterans. Previously, Jessena worked forthe State of Illinois collectively for 11 years in variouscapacities including the Illinois School for the Deaf,the Department on Aging’s Senior Helpline andDivision of Developmental Disabilities’ Bureau ofQuality Management.

“Jessena graduated from MacMurray College with aBachelor’s in Social Work and a minor in DeafEducation and Liberal Arts. She earned herMaster’s in Social Work degree from University ofIllinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed herMSW internship at McFarland Mental Health Center,and this led to eventual employment there as aninpatient social worker. In this capacity, Jessenaworked with both the civil and forensic populations ofindividuals served. She obtained social worklicensure in 2010. Jessena also has experience withfree-lance interpreting.

“While busy with her husband and two youngchildren, Jessena is eager to have a positive impacton the delivery of mental health services for the deafand hard of hearing. Please join me in welcomingJessena as she begins her new role in serving themental health needs of this special population.”
