CEWIT Description:

To best capital ize on the IT revolution, spur economic growth, advance scientific research and

develop the technologies of tomorrow, the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and

Information Technology (CEWIT) was created in 2003 as the anchoring building in SUNY Stony

Brook Universitys Research and Development Park. The Center is a next generation research

facility bringing together academic, industrial, state, and federal resources to shape new

dimensions in the unfinished wireless and IT revolution whose mission is three-fold: become

recognized as a world leader in interdisciplinary research in the emerging, critical technologies ofthe information age, address the skilled technology worker shortage, and foster new enterprise

development. CEWIT has more than 70 associated faculty members, and more than 400 Ph.D./M.S.

students engaged in research. The Center has created a powerful intellectual property portfolio

resulting in numerous patents. Since its inception, the Center has worked hard to build strategic

alliances and business partnerships among the academic, scientific, and business communities.

Value Proposition

Several types of antidepressant medications are available today, but the majority of patients do not respond to the

first medication prescribed to them. Today, there are no diagnostic tools which allow objective adjustment of a drug

to the patient (unlike in other medical fields), and the decisions for treatment are made subjectively by the attending

physician. In order to match the effective medication to an individual suffering from depression, the physician usually

tries a number of different medications for a period of weeks to months. This is an expensive procedure that also

lengthens the patient's period of depression, lowers the success rate for effective treatment and increases the chance

for suicide. Our product will allow physicians to receive fast and accurate matching of the appropriate antidepressantmedication for each patient.

In comparison to similar products that have been under development, our companys diagnostic kit provides accurate

results, based on combinations of genetic variations analyzed by big-data tools, costs about half of the price which

has been set by competing products and therefore constitutes a significant competitive advantage. In addition, the

kit allows the physician to receive a fast result (less than 24 hours after the test) compared to about a month for other

products.


The developed algorithms define several genomic alterations which can predict the response/non-response of an

individual to different kinds of antidepressant medications. The company uses these algorithms to develop a diagnostic

kit which allows physicians to receive fast results that will enable tailoring the right medicine for each patient.
