Potential

Areas of Heat Loss in HomesThe Problem

High Energy Costs:Low Comfort Levels

A problem typical of older Irish houses is ever-increasing heating costs without corresponding increases in temperature and comfort. Insulation was not a priority years ago and efficient thermal insulation materials were not readily available.

We are all aware that today’s building standards don’t accept such inadequacy in insulation – and in the future they will be even less tolerant. Modern techniques and products have been developed that eliminate drafts and ensure comfortable internal conditions.

Therefore based on a P/A ratio of 0.4 for the semi detached house, from the table above 150mm Isover Metac can achieve a U-value of 0.18W/m2K but a detached house of the same size/shape the P/A ratio would increase to 0.6 and the U-value based on 150mm ISOVER Metac would change to 0.20 W/m2K as per table above.

Note: The U-value for floors (including basement floors) depends on the length of the exposed perimeter (to unheated buildings or outside). Example: Perimeter Area (P/A) Ratio = Length of exposed perimeter (m) divided by the internal floor area (m2).

Attic and Pitched Roof Solutions

Did you know that 30% of heat lost from your home could be through your roof?

One of the easiest ways to save heat and money this winter is to insulate your attic. Many homes already have some insulation between the joists. If your attic insulation is in poor condition, it is advisable to remove this and replace with new insulation.

Isover Spacesaver Attic Floor insulation roll is available in solid and pre-cut rolls to suit common joist sizes. We recommend at least: 100mm thickness between the joists - this is your first layer.

If there is already attic insulation in place between your joists, the easiest option is to use Heatshield Top Up insulation roll. This is a high thermal performance insulation in 140mm thickness. It can be rolled out across the joists, so it’s really easy and quick to install. Adding Heatshield Top Up gives an extra 140mm of extra insulation above existing material - and becomes your second layer.

Understanding Thermal Performance

The current building regulations require a U-value of 0.16 for attic floors. The U-value is defined as the rate at which heat is lost - and the lower the U-value, the better it is for your home.

Basic Installation Steps

Attic and Pitched Roof Solutions

1. Measure depth and width of your joists. Typically joists are 100mm deep and 600mm wide.

Simply measure the width and depth of your house and log onto www.isover.ie to use our handy insulation calculator.

5. Once the first layer is completed, you should put on the tank cover and make it secure with tape.

Then, put on the pipe covers and seal with a tape - such as our Vario Multi-tape SL.

2. Treat sockets and downlighters with a socket box and remember to leave a 75mm gap around the cable, where these cables can’t be lifted above the insulation.

6. Put a walkway to your tank. You can do this by:

✔✔ Securing timber across the joists

✔✔ Laying the top of layer of insulation between them

✔✔ Then laying a walkable wood board on top

3. For the first layer of insulation, lift your insulation through the attic hatch - whilst keeping the packaging on.

Then cut the insulation to match the width of your joists. Finally for this step: Starting at the end furthest away from the attic door, simply roll and friction fit between the joists.

7. When your 1st layer is complete you are ready for the top up layer.

Open Heatshield roll and roll out in the opposite direction across the joists. Ensure you join each layer and leave no gaps.

4. It’s important to ensure your attic space is well-ventilated to prevent a build up of moisture and condensation.

For this purpose, we recommend that you leave a gap of 50mm between the roofing membrane and the insulation at eaves of the roof.

8. Insulate your attic hatch by making a bag filled with insulation, preferably using vapour membrane. You can use Isover Vario membrane filled with leftover insulation. Place it over the attic hatch. For extra protection - use a draft seal tape around the door surround to create an airtight seal.

Exit carefully and adjust the bag in the right place. Close the hatch.

Don’t put insulation under the water tank! This is best practice to avoid water tank freezing in low temperatures.

Use the handle of a brush or something similar to push the insulation into “hard to reach” places - but take care not to compress the insulation.

Why use METAC?

Page 45: ISOVER Ireland Book of Solutions 2014

4 3

Basic Installation Steps1. Measure the depth and the width of your

rafters and choose the product thickness to suit the thermal performance requirements.

Measure the length of the building (dimension running opposite to the direction of the rafters) and the span (length) of the rafters.

Multiply twice the span of the rafters by the length of the building.

6. ISOVER recommends installing Metac with Vario to provide the best thermal and acoustic performance coupled with airtightness and moisture protection. Vario XtraSafe membrane (Sd value 0.3 – 20m) is specifically designed to provide increased protection against moisture damage. Metac can be fully filled* between rafters when used with our Vario XtraSafe membrane installed below the insulation with Gyproc Plasterboard to complete the installation - this provides the safest solution to protect timber rafters from moisture damage.

* For full guidance on full fill solutions contact our Technical Support Team. For more installation details visit www.isover.ie

2. Lift your Metac insulation into the attic – whilst keeping the packaging on.

7. ISOVER recommends best practice by installing 50x50mm counter battens in the opposite direction below the rafters.

This creates a service zone without the need to penetrate the Vario membrane.

3. Measure and cut the roll to match the width between your rafters allowing approximately 10mm extra on dimension.

Open one section at a time as and when you are ready to install it.

8. To increase U-value performance friction fit additional 50mm Metac between the counter battens.

5. Push and friction fit the insulation in between the rafters (taking care not to compress it) keeping Metac flush with the face of the rafters. Ensure eaves ventilation is maintained where required.

4. Unroll it to allow full thickness recovery and then cut to length using a straight edge to help ensure a clean straight cut.

9. Finally use Gyproc Plasterboard applied to counter battens to complete the installation.

ISOVER Vario System Vario System is an intelligent membrane, designed to adapt to the climate and protect your building, inside and out. It’s also designed with an uncompromising commitment to superior airtightness. Vario System will improve your BER (building energy rating), save money, increase comfort and help to combat climate change.

Vario System meets and exceeds industry standards, while making a substantial contribution to your BER and environmental footprint. Developed in Germany and available exclusively from ISOVER, Vario System membrane is as sophisticated as human skin – altering its structure according to relative humidity. Vario System vapour control membrane offers superior performance, facilitating the drying of the building structure whilst delivering superior levels of airtightness within the building envelope. Just how good is it? Vario System’s performance is truly outstanding, it has an excellent variable sd-value: it diffuses 25 times more moisture in summer than the structure absorbs during winter.

How does the Vario System work? Vario System’s most unique quality is its ability to change its water vapour performance. The Vario System membrane adapts and reacts naturally, changing its permeability according to humidity conditions, allowing closed building systems to increase their drying potential. This means Vario System is truly multifunctional: acting as a barrier in winter and a breathable membrane in summer.

In winter, the membrane prevents vapour from the warm interior diffusing into the timber structure.

As the structure warms in summer, the membrane’s micropores open, allowing vapour to escape into the building interior.

IN SUMMER IN WINTER

In steel frame structures such as commercial and retail buildings, Vario can be used in the same applications as on timber frame structures, except tapes are used instead of staples.

Vario intelligent membrane can be used in a diverse range of constructions:

Peace of mind from ISOVER Technical TeamFurther Technical recommendationsThe following issues should also be considered to maintain the most efficient performance of the building structure.

1 Air tightness Air tightness is largely reliant on the quality of workmanship undertaken. It is therefore essential to ensure that, • Gaps around the perimeter of the systems e.g. between skirting and floor are appropriately sealed. • Penetrations made through the Vario KM Duplex air tightness barrier, such as those required to accommodate services, are appropriately sealed using compatible Vario tapes and sealant accessories.

2 Condensation Risk Inappropriate or poorly specified installations of thermal insulation and moisture check barriers, can in some scenarios increase the risk of harmful condensation on or towards the cold side of the construction element. These risks tend to be higher when upgrading single solid leaf constructions. Please contact our technical department for further assistance.

3 Maintaining Thermal Performance (Minimising Cold Bridging effects) Junctions between different building elements often create weaknesses in the overall provision of thermal insulation. Provided below is a list of good practice recommendations for some of the more important elemental junctions.

Eaves • Ensure continuity of insulation throughout the junction. • Ensure installed insulation provides continuity between walls, eaves and roofs. • Ensure eaves insulation installed above wall plate achieves at least a thermal resistance of 1.2m2K/W (e.g. 60mm ISOVER SpaceSaver).

Timber joist floors / roofs • Fully fill ISOVER glass wool between last joist and the external wall. Insulation should have a thermal resistance of at least 2.0m2K/W.

Lintels Install appropriate insulation to lintel soffits which offers a thermal resistance of at least 0.34 m2K/W.

5 Convection losses Thermal performance can also be reduced where convection currents occur in behind the thermal linings. When installing ISOVER Calibel it is therefore recommended to apply a continuous ribbon of adhesive around the perimeter of the linings and around penetrations on each wall.

6 U- value calculationsBuilding regulations require demonstration of thermal performance through U-value calculations for the building energy rating. The energy rating is made up of several elements including building fabric and insulation as well as services and renewable energy solutions. Bear in mind that the maximum U-values listed in building regulations are only a backstop. Some elements will typically need to go beyond the minimum standards in order to achieve the building compliance. Our technical department is ready to provide you with your U-value calculations incorporating Isover components and provide specification support, to assist in achieving compliance for your building.
