Ten is the very nature of number.
All Greeks and all barbarians alike
count up to ten, and having reached ten revert again to
the unity. And again, Pythagoras maintains, the power
of the number 10 lies in the number 4, the tetrad.

Around the 9th or 8th Centuries B.C, mainland Greeks
started to employ a writing system we call the Greek
Alphabet. In the formative years the Alphabet varied from region to region like
dialects and accents, but all the symbols ultimately based off from the Phoenici-
an Alphabet, the same ancestor of the Hebrew Alphabet. The difference in the
Greek Alphabet is most apparent in the addition of 7 vowels, which the Semit-
ic alphabets did not properly represent. Like its cousins, however, the Greek
Alphabet was used not only to represent phonetics and language, but numerals
and mathematics. While some letters became obsolete or redundant, they re-
tained their usefulness in mathematics.

Numerals are terminated by () to distin-
guish them from words. Likewise, for the
1000s place and above the number is
prefaced with () to distinguish (5) from
(500).
Try making your calculations using Greek
numerals. It will help you remember the
characters numerical values.
