History of ISO 15926

Based the EPISTLE information model from the early 1990iesThe first large scale implementations were ETAP in 1996 and Aasgard in 1997The principals and the technology have since been implemented by a number of software vendor (AVEVA, Bentley, EPMT, IBM, Innotec, Intergraph, Noumenon ---) and been use by many operators (BP, Chevron, Petronas, Shell, StatoilHydro, Total ---) and EPCs (Aker Kværner, Bechtel, Fluor, ---)The development of the ISO 15926 standard started in August 1997The first two Parts were published by ISO as International Standards (IS) in December 2003 and June 2004Phase 1 will be finalized in 2009

Standards as Databases

18

Shorter development times: Faster revisions and extensions of existing standards

Standardized content in the form of reference data must increasingly be usable by computer applications

Content is visible beyond individual documents or committees and even during development Increase of consistency

Provision of machine-accessible reference data needed in business applications may become an important business area for standards bodies in the future

19

ISO Procedure for “ Maintenance and development of standards in database format”

New options – initiated by Change Request

Maintenance/withdrawal of some of the content:Normal database procedure [internal to

committee] - Duration: 3 – 6 months

New Work Items/major changes to content Extended database procedure [follows “traditional” ISO process]

Change Requests can be subdivided or consolidated as appropriate

The normal database procedure

22

The Validation Team

A permanent, “executive”, group of individuals appointed by and acting as delegates on behalf of their National Bodies, A-liaison organizations and committee-internal liaisons to validate proposed items and vote for their release as part of a database standard

All P-members, A-liaison organizations and committee-internal liaisons can appoint one member to the team.

minimum of 5 P-members

P-member representatives have the right to vote

A-liaisons and committee-internal liaison representatives may submit comments

Deputies should be appointed to avoid delays

Duration of appointment and any supporting network of experts at national level to be established by nominating bodies

Three methods of implementing ISO 15926

Standardise on templates and object models:Software vendors can produce functionality and test against standardised data exchanges

Owners and Contractors may ask for compliance against specific standardised templates calling up aspects of ISO 15926

Use ISO 15926 as a tool for mapping between systems Implement within a database

Instead of starting from scratch, use it as a single integrated model

Main Objectives

• The primary objective of the project is to develop:

A demonstrated reliable digital platform for Integrated Operation Generation 2 (IO G2) in the High NorthIO G2 pilots within drilling, R&P, O&M in the High NorthDecision Support for drilling, R&P, O&M

• IO G2 for the High North shall facilitate operations in remote and hazardous conditions, the use of limited operational personnel and “zero footprint” solutions

Summary (1)ISO 15926 is a standard for:

Representation of data

Defining consistent terminology, independent of use

Exchanging data using this terminology

Integrating data across applications

Integrating data across the life cycle

ISO 15926 is not a standard for:What to represent

• This is a user responsibility, you can represent what you choose

Standardising products• This is for the domain technical standardisation committees

Presentation formats for data• This is the responsibility of the actual system owners

Summary (2)The ISO 15926 principals and the technology have over the last 10 years been implemented by a number of software vendor and been use by many operators and EPCsPhase 1 of ISO 15926 will be completed in 2009 A better understanding of the data integration and quality challenge has increased the interest for dictionaries, taxonomies and ontologies including ISO 15926Users of reference data libraries are interested in feeding own extensions and improvements back into the standard. This includes ISO Technical CommitteesThe semantic web technology represents a great opportunity for improvements and acceleration of the development and implementationPOSC Caesar is an active organization in this development Co-operation is necessary in order to accelerate the work
