The definition section of the ISO 14001standard provides the foundation of theentire standard. They need to beunderstood is the standard is to beimplemented.

"3.1 -- Continual ImprovementProcess of enhancing the environmental
management system to achieve improvementsin overall environmental performance in linewith the organization's environmental policy.NOTE -- The process need not take place inall areas of activity simultaneously."
