WELCOME MESSAGE:S E C R E T A R Y G E N E R A L

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi waBarakatuhu I pray you read this in the best of health and high Islamic spirit.

To my brothers, sisters, children, and my dearest grandchildren, I extend a warm and sincere welcome to you at our 40th Annual ISNA Canada Convention.

In our lifetime, the 40th year is when Allah (SWT) wants us to pause and reflect on our past. Particularly, He (SWT) wants us to show gratitude to Him for allowing us to reach the peak of our maturity. In Surah Al-‘Ahqaf (chapter 46, verse 15) Allah (SWT) says:

“[He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, ‘My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my ospring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.’”

Over 50 years ago, Muslim university students across North America initiated the Muslim Students Association (MSA) of the US & Canada to cater to the needs of Muslim students residing in North America. After graduating, these working professionals did not have an organization they could rely on to service their religious needs. So, the MSA found-ed the Islamic Society of North America - ISNA (both US and Canada).

May Allah (SWT) bless those who have been with ISNA since the beginning of MSA. May He (SWT) grant them the best of rewards, as they have laid down the foundation of this beautiful organization that brings us together today. Their eorts have provided us with the opportunity to celebrate brotherhood and sisterhood. We, who came after, should always remember that Allah (SWT) commands us to pray for ourselves and for those who preceded us. In Surah Al-Hashr (Chapter 59, verse 10) Allah (SWT) says:

“And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.’”

Since its inception, ISNA has recognized the importance of linking generations of Muslims like the pearls in a necklace. The Majlis, a higher level of governance, brings together grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren and provides them with the opportunity in governing one organization. I remember in one Majlis, we had a father who was representing ISNA at large, with his daughter on his right - who happened to be the president of MSA, and his grandson on his left - who happened to be the president of MYNA. It was so beautiful to see in one organization the three generations having the same power to make decisions together for the future of the Muslim communityat all levels.

I hope and pray that we reflect on this organization at its 40th anniversary and strengthen ISNA Canada at all levels of governance. Not only to develop a parental bond but also to assist with the sustainability of the organization. We’d like to encourage and develop our children with the necessary skills and training to succeed at all levels in society. More particularly, we will actively engage other com-munities and organizations to build strong alliances. This will be accomplished by respecting other people’s rights to their beliefs and ideals so we can move forward together, united and strong, in a pluralistic society.

I am proud to acknowledge that this year ’s convention team is more than 90% comprised of those who are under the age of forty. This team, predominately comprising of volunteers, have dedicated much time and eort to ensure that we provide you a high quality inclusive program.

On behalf of ISNA Canada, I’d like to thank their tireless eorts and I’d like to thank you for joining us in our milestone event.

Please accept the assurance of my regards,

Abdalla Idris AliSecretary GeneralISNA Canada

It is with intention and purpose that we reap the maximum benefit of what we do. By its virtue our actions elevate to the station of an

ibadah, and we are awarded based on the sincerity and commitment of our intentions and not just the degree of our actions. Thus we share

with you an intention for seeking knowledge to read as you begin your convention experience;

Bismillahi rahmanir rahim

Alhamdulillahi rabbil `alamin, wa salAllahu `ala sayidina Muhammadin wa `ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.

Nawaytu al-ta`alluma wa ta`lima, wat-tadhakkhura wa-tadhkir, wa-naf`a wal-intifa`, wal-ifadah wal-istifadah,

wal-hatth `ala tamassuki bi kitabillahi wa sunnati rasulihi, salAllah `alayhi wa sallam.

Wa-du`a il-al-huda wa dalalata `alal-khayri, ibtigha-a wajh-ilallahi wa mardatihi wa qurbihi wa thawabihi subhanahu wa ta`ala.

I intend to study and teach, to take and give reminder, to take and give benefit, to take and give advantage, and to encourage the holding fast to the book of Allah and the way of His messenger, upon him be peace,

and calling to guidance and directing towards good, hoping for the countenance of Allah and His pleasure, proximity and reward,

transcendent is He.

Penned by Imam AbdAllah bin Alawi al-Haddad of Tarim, Yemen. He was blind from a very young age but grew in knowledge and stature

to become the foremost scholars of his time.

MY GOALS FOR ATTENDING THE ISNA CONVENTION

The importance of environmental stewardship in Islam:

Islam teaches us that we have been entrusted with this earth and that we are responsible for its preservation. It teaches us that we must not waste earth’s resources by engaging in thoughtless consumption, wastefulness, and extravagance. Living a balanced life in all aspects especially materialistic is something essential in Islam. Even something so necessary for the continuation of our lives such as eating or drinking, we are commanded by Allah (SWT) not to over consume when doing so. Muslims should also practice cleanliness as it is a sign of faith. Physical cleanliness is especially emphasized in Islam which means that Muslims are not only required to maintain body purity and cleanliness but they should also contribute to the cleanliness of their surroundings including their house, the roads, parks, Masjids etc. The preservation of ecosystems is also very crucial in Islam as Muslims are encouraged to plant trees since it is a renewable source of hasant (good deeds) especially if creatures eat from it such as a person, an animal, or even a bird.

Let us revive this aspect of worship in Islam and prac-tice environmental stewardship. Here are some tips to help you be more environmentally conscious in your daily activities:

• Instead of buying plastic water bottles to take with you on the go, invest in a reusable water bottle and make use of it. • Recycle whenever you get the chance; do not just throw everything in the garbage when some of the waste can be recycled. Take the extra several seconds to think about the waste products you are about to throw out and to determine which of them can be recycled and which cannot. • Try to turn o all electrical appliances when not used. For example, unplug your charger from the socket if you are not charging anything as keeping it in will still result in some electricity usage. Turn of the lights at home during the day and use natural sunlight instead. Also, when not using the bathroom turn o the lights.• Most importantly, do not over consume. Whether it is in eating, drinking, making wudu or showering, or even shopping. Our bodies and souls are not designed for overabundance, rather we can easily survive on small portions and amounts however, it is only a matter of habit.

Muslim Youth of North America is a youth organization founded in 1985. MYNA is a non-profit in which teenagers from 12 to 18 work together to provide fellow youth with opportunities in the community. Their dedication and passion is evident as they work together to provide fellow youth an educational, Islamic platform in which to express and enjoy themselves.

Throughout the Greater Toronto Area, MYNA has successfully hosted various events aimed towards youth, primarily those in high school. Annual events such as the Get To Know MYNA Dinner, Leadership Training Program and MYNA Toronto Camp have been the foundations for unbreakable bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

However, innovative events such as the Haji Noor Calligraphy Workshop have also brought to light the opportunities they provide their community. Alongside all of these events, MYNA is also known for organizing qiyyams, Wonderland Trips and Sister’s parties for the youth; opportunities to enjoy with righteous company in an Islamic environment.

MYNA has collaborated with many local organizations, such as launching a FeedMe Campaign with SeekersHub or working with ISNA to provide the youth with parallel sessions during their annual ISNA Convention. In addition to this, MYNA Toronto also reaches out to the other MYNA branches, including those in the US, to reach out to an even greater audience.

MYNA truly is an organization "for the youth, by the youth" and it is here where much of our young community finds opportunities to seek knowledge, connect with others, and give back to our community.

With the expansion of our Muslim community in the GTA, the needs of our community have also expanded. In response, ISNA Canada is pleased to introduce a new project; the Community Information and Resource Centre (CIRC). The project is being introduced to our community during ISNA Canada’s 40th annual convention. The goal of CIRC is to bridge the gap between the needs of individuals in our GTA community with existing support services. In addition to the services and programs currently oered by ISNA Canada, the CIRC will have a continuously growing list of other services including newcomer support, child and youth services, mental health services, senior support services, and many more Inshallah.

Get your voice heard! Let us know what you think are the most pressing needs of the community. Your input will shape the types of services CIRC will link to. Help us to better serve our community. CIRC is located next to the ISNA Bookstore, and we will be having an open house with free refreshments during the convention. You can join in and help by completing a needs assessment survey or by signing up for a focus group discussion.

Everyone is welcome !

Want to get involved with CIRC? You can volunteer with us! Contact us at [email protected] to learn more about current openings.

The ISNA Convention was created to address the needs of the community, however, this goal can only be reached through the feedback provided by our attendees. Feedback surveys are available on iPads throughout the convention. Two  feedback stations are located in the foyer. Alternatively,  feedback  surveys may also be requested from volunteers inside the lecture hall. The

feedback you provide will enable us to improve the quality of our services during the next convention and better cater to the community. The future development of the convention is therefore dependent on and driven by

your feedback.
