Institute for Supply Management™: A History of LeadershipFounded in 1915, the Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) exists to lead and serve the supply management profession by promoting the exchange of ideas, developing standards of excellence, collecting and disseminating information, encouraging curriculum in colleges and universities, and striving to advance the profes-sion. 1915ISM is founded as the National Asso-ciation of Purchasing Agents (N.A.P.A.).

1917 N.A.P.A. assists

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson

with buying mate-rials for use in the

war emergency.

1965 N.A.P.A. launches the Journal of Purchasing,

which later became the Journal of Supply Chain

Management.

N.A.P.A. publishes the Guide to Purchasing.

1917With the encourage-ment of N.A.P.A., New York University establishes a course in purchasing.

1948N.A.P.A. begins a program to elevate the knowledge and reputation of supply professionals.

1961N.A.P.A. launches a program including doctoral fellowships, faculty internships and educational seminars.

1920N.A.P.A. publishes the Purchasing Agent’s Creed, a basis for today’s Principles and Standards of Eth-ical Supply Man-agement Conduct.

1956N.A.P.A. joins the first informal talks leading to formation of the International Federa-tion of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM).

N.A.P.A. appoints commodity com-mittees on fuel, lumber, paper and steel.

1930N.A.P.A. and the Harvard Graduate School of Business undertake a com-plete case study of purchasing challenges.

1940N.A.P.A. works with government and industry to establish guidelines for main-taining a “fair price” on crucial materials, preventing violations of antitrust law.

1930N.A.P.A. establishes the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award.

1920sN.A.P.A. influences major policy and business processes, such as the adoption of centralized purchasing throughout the U.S. government, adop-tion of national standards and specifications for iron and steel scrap by the Department of Com-merce, and supplier rela-tions and collaboration.

1931The first official Manufacturing Report On Business® is published.

1939Handbook of Purchasing Policies and Procedures of the N.A.P.A. is pub-lished and evolves into the renowned Supply Management Handbook.

1928N.A.P.A. releases the Standards for Buying and Selling.

1961The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics designates the Man-ufacturing Report On Business® as a leading business indicator.

becomes the first woman to lead the

1990The first issue of Supply IN Demand is published.

1984A computer version of the C.P.M. is offered. 2005

ISM launches the ISM Awards for Excellence in Supply Management.

1996NAPM creates and launches its first online courses.

2010The Journal of Supply Chain Management is added to Thomson Reuters ISI Web of Knowledge.

2000NAPM and its members establish a new leader-ship structure ensuring the association’s Board

of Directors is com-prised of experienced

supply executives from large firms.

1974The Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) is introduced.

2008ISM launches the Certified Profes-sional in Supply

Management® (CPSM®).

2011ISM launches the Certified Profes- sional in Supplier Diversity® (CPSD™).

ISM publishes the Sustainability and Social Responsibility Handbook.

ISM joins the Supply Chain and Logistics Certification Network as a Charter Member.

1987NAPM moves from

Oradell, New Jersey to the Arizona State

University (ASU) Research Park in Tempe, Arizona.

1986CAPS Research is

established.

1998NAPM creates the

Non-Manufacturing Report On Business®.

2003 ISM and the R. Gene and

Nancy D. Richter Foundation establish the R. Gene Richter

Scholarship Program.

ISM’s first international affiliates, ISM—Korea and

ISM—Hong Kong (ISMHK), are approved.

1978 Betty McDonald, C.P.M.

and May Warzocha, C.P.M. are the first women

elected to the NAPM Board of Directors.

1981NAPM launches an Independent Study Program covering single subjects.

1982NAPM moves from New York to Oradell, New Jersey.

2002NAPM changes its name to Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM).
