BAY SHORE following an attack of lock jaw , re- sult irig from stepp ing upon a rusty nail , which penetrated his left foot , Captain Daniel Jarvis Thurber , well known to patrons of Water Island and Ocean Beach , died in Seney hosp ital in Brooklyn on Sunday last. Captain Thurber was a native of Patchogue and was 71 years of age. He had followed the bay for a livelihood nearly his whole life . Within a few weeks he and his wife were to have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in their new cottage now under construction at Patchogue. Besides his widow , he leaves five children , Mrs. E. Hildreth , of Sayville; Frederick C , John and Le Roy Thurber and Mrs. Edward Baker , of Patchogue. Mr. Thurber had been working on his boat a week ago last Saturday when the accident occurred. Every attention was given the wound , and he was removed to the hospital on Saturday, the day before his death. Mr . Thurber besides con- ducting the two beach resorts had also managed the Central hotel in Patchogue , now in charge of his son Frederick. They will find/ that the highest per- ' centage was 72 in Islip, and the lowest 42 in Babylon , and that the average of the ten towns was 62. These being the officially recorded figures for Suf- folk , what ivas the State Board of Equalization to do? Its sworn duty is to equalize by taking off from the counties assessed at a rate above the State average and to spread the sum so taken over counties assessed below the average. Suffolk is assessed below the average and the State Board raises her equalized valuations accordingly. Taxpayers may not like this increase , but if they are candid they will not blame the State Board for the result which is wholly the fault of the local assessors. When Suffolk' s assessors raise their valuations from 75 to 80 per cent, of the full value , the State Board will hav e little or no occasion to raise the equalized valuations. —Greenport Watchman. The miner,, , tungsten (the name meaning heavy stone) has been known for many years , but only comparatively recentl y has it ' Oecome of economic im- portance. Tha most important use , according to Frank L. Hess , of the United States Geological Survey, and the one which makes tungsten mining on an extensive scale possible , i.s a.s an alloy for tool steel. Lathes using tools made from tungsten steel may be speeded up until the chi ps leaving the tool are so hot that they turn blue , an operation wliich would ruin the tempe r j of high-carbon steel. It is stated that about five times as much can be done with lathes built for such speed and work as can be done by the same lathes with earbon-steel tools. From 16 to 20 per cent, of tungsten is ordina- rily used in lathe tools. The melting point of tungsten is exceedingl y hi gh 4 , 576 degrees F. Tungsten also has an important use in making incandescent electric lamps , crucibles for electric furnaces , and various other articles. AT THE HIPPODROME There are more than 200 animals in this year ' s show at the Hippodrome, a feature that appeals specially to young fo ks. An entire flock of shei p is sj en to saunter down the mountain side in the Alp ine scene . Elep hants , camel , sacred oxen , a bull , sacred ebus , burros and horses as well as dogs , form part of the many pageants that are inter- spersed in gorgeous succession through- out the big show. The Ballet of But- te r flies is thought by many peop le to be the finest ever shown on the Hi ppo- drome stage. In this scene a forest fire and its finale of devastation are introduced. Other features that con- tinue to draw crowds to the big buil.l- ing at the twice daily shows are the desert scene , introducing a tribe of genuine Berber Arabs from the out- skirts of Tunis , the gr^at Durbar scene in the gardens of the Grand Vizier ' s harem , the bulliring in Seville , Venice , and the Granl canal by moon light , Windso r castfc , Eng land; Blarney castle , Ireland J etc. Don 't waste youfltnoney buying strengthening plasters. Lesson VII. —Fourth Quarter , For Nov. 12, 1911. THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES. Text of the Lesson , Dan. v , 17-30. Memory Verses , 25-23—Golden Text , Eccles. xii , ^A —Commentary Pre- pared by Rev. D. M. Stearns. We arc glad to have another lesson in Daniel , but it may be so long be- fore we ret urn to this book that it may be wise to glillicc sit t!:e book as a whole and outline its contents . It is Ihe book of the times of tlie gen tiles until the time of the kingdom shall come when Daniel's city and people shall have their transgressions blotted out and shall enjoy the ever- lasting righ teousness of chapter ix, 24. Any one ean make an outline to suit himself , but the following, by chapters , may suggest a better one. I. Daniel' s purpose of heart. II. The stone kingdom to till tho earth. 111. The image worship, or the furnace. IV. The proud humiliated. V. The judgment oti the blasphemer. VI. The triumph of God over His enemies. VII. The everlasting kingdom (paral- lel witli chapter iii. VIII. Kingdoms friendly to Daniel' s peop le. IX. Dan- iel' s prayer mul Gabriel's prediction of the seventy-sevens . X. Gabriel' s sec- ond visit lo Daniel. XL Antichrist nnd his overthrow. XII. The kingdom to follow the resurrection of the Just . •in.l lhe great, tribulation. 1< rom even such an outline as this we see that tlie portion assigned for today 's lesson is just the story of a sample leader of the devil' s followers , whose end Is surely foretold in I' s. ix , 17; Matt, xxv , 41. It is part of tlie great king- dom story of liie book and must be considered iu that connection as woll as in its personal relation to indi- viduals. It is the record of a drunken revel witb which Uml interfered sud- denly. It was a grea t gathering of great people iu the eyes of the world , and doubtless those invited felt as much honored ns Hainan did (Es . v, 5) when invited to the banquet of Queen Esther. The golden aud silver vessels which had been taken from the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem were used as common drinking ves- sels, and they praised all gods except the liv lug and true (lod. In the midst cf their drunken revelry a very strange and startling thing happens, for thp lingers of :v man ' s hand are seen writing words upon the plaster of the wall of the king 's pal- ace , and Ihe king saw the part of the hand that wrote (verse 0). The king is filled with trembling and dismay, nnd all his wise men are called to in- terpret the words , but they eould not read the writing (verse 8). This is the third time in this book that the wisdom of this world failed to under- stand the things of God (ii , 10; v , 27) . How true it is that "the things of God Unoweth no man , but the spirit of God" (I Cor. ii , 10) . AU the wisdom of this world is utterly at fault con- cerning things heavenl y. The opinions and surmises of people are not worth the breath that utters them when they venture upon the things of God. There are unseen agents all about us , and while the hand of the Lord is against His enem\ps it is upon all them for good that seek Him (F.z. viii , 22. . The queen hears of the unusual and startling event , nnd , coming into the banquet house and seeing the king greatly troubled and his lords aston- ished and the wise men helpless, she remembered Daniel and his marvel- ous skill In interpreting hard things In lhe days of Nebiichadiiezzer , and she said . "I. i'l Daniel I.e .ailed and li's will show Hi.- interpretation " (verses 10-12). When Dan lol came into the presence of the king he w. -is told of the inability of all the wise mon to interpret the writing and was offered a great reward or groat rewards if he would do it (verses 13-10). Dis- daining the proffered rewards , Daniel said , "Yet I will read the writing unto the king nnd make known to him the interp retation " (verso IT) . We ihink of Abraham 's rejection of the offer of the king of Sodom , of Elisha ' s re- jection of Xaamsin ' s gifts and of Peter ' s remark tli.it the things of God cannot be purchased with money. The refusal of the man of God to go home with Jeroboam or accept his gifts (I Kings xiiii is also on the same line . Da n iel then reminded (lie king of what the most high God had done for his father ainl how lie liad humbled him and added fearlessly and sa 'sirdi- ingly. "Thou hnsl not humbled thin* heart, (hough thou knowest all this , but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven. * » * and Die God in whose hand th y b reath is and whose are all thv wnvs hsist thou not glorified" (verses 22, 23) . What a searching word for multitudes of peo- ple . ' The time of all earthly kingdoms is fixed. Only the kingdom of God is eternal. The Lord is a God of knowl- edge , and by Hiui actions are weighed (I Sam. ii. 31. (bit* days are numbered, our thoughts and actions weighed, and the life story in n mortal ivuly will br finished some day. However much riches and honor may have been ob- tained, the question conies , "Then whose shall those things he?" As to the condition of those who rebel against God. let tho word s of the Lord Jesus In Luke xvi. 2' . ' .: Mark ix. 43-18 tell till who desire to know . See alsc Rev . xx. 15. If readers who sincerely wish toknow the merits of the increased taxa-tion question , over which the Republi-can party organs, with more zeal than jdiscretion , are Raising a din loud enoughto be heard in Africa, will read the fig- 'ures of the loc.il assessed valuation in !the several tovims of this county, they Iwill be apt to have their eyes opened. They will find/ that the highest per- 'centage was 72 in Islip, and the lowest42 in Babylon , and that the average ofthe ten towns was 62. These beingthe officially recorded figures for Suf-folk , what ivas the State Board ofEqualization to do? Its sworn duty isto equalize by taking off from thecounties assessed at a rate above theState average and to spread the sumso taken over counties assessed belowthe average. Suffolk is assessed belowthe average and the State Board raisesher equalized valuations accordingly.Taxpayers may not like this increase, but if they are candid they will notblame the State Board for the resultwhich is wholly the fault of the localassessors. When Suffolk's assessorsraise their valuations from 75 to 80 percent, of the full value, the State Boardwill have little or no occasion to raisethe equalized valuations. —GreenportWatchman.

The miner,,, tungsten (the namemeaning heavy stone) has been knownfor many years, but only comparativelyrecently has it 'Oecome of economic im-portance. Tha most important use, according to Frank L. Hess, of theUnited States Geological Survey, andthe one which makes tungsten min ingon an extensive scale possible , i.s a.s analloy for tool steel. Lathes using toolsmade from tungsten steel may bespeeded up until the chi ps leaving thetool are so hot that they turn blue , anoperation wliich would ruin the temper jof high-carbon steel. It is stated thatabout five times as much can be donewith lathes bui lt for such speed andwork as can be done by the samelathes wi th earbon-steel tools. From16 to 20 per cent, of tungsten is ordina-rily used in lathe tools. The mel t ingpoint of tungsten is exceedingl y hi gh —4,576 degrees F. Tungsten also has animportant use in making incandescentelectric lamps, crucibles for electricfurnaces, and various other articles.

THE INTERNATIONAL SERIES.

Text of the Lesson , Dan. v, 17-30.Memory Verses, 25-23—Golden Text ,Eccles. xi i , ^A —Commenta ry Pre-pared by Rev. D. M. Stearns.

We arc glad to have another lessonin Daniel , but it may be so long be-fore we ret urn to t h i s book t h a t itmay be wise to glillicc si t t!:e book asa whole and outline its contents . Itis Ihe book of the times of t l ie gentiles un t i l the time of the kingdomshall come when Daniel's city andpeople shall have their transgressionsblotted out and shall enjoy the ever-lasting righteousness of chapter ix,24. Any one ean make an out l ine tosuit himself , but the following, bychapters, may suggest a better one.I. Daniel' s purpose of heart. II. Thestone kingdom to till tho earth. 111.The image worship, or the furnace.IV. The proud humi l i a t ed . V. Thejudgment oti the blasphemer. VI. Thetriumph of God over His enemies.VII. The everlasting kingdom (paral-lel witli chapter ii i . V I I I . Kingdomsfriendly to Daniel' s people. IX. Dan-iel's prayer mul Gabriel's prediction ofthe seventy-sevens. X. Gabriel's sec-ond visit lo Daniel. XL Antichristnnd his over throw. X I I . The kingdomto follow t h e resurre ction of t h e Just.•in.l lhe great, tribulation. 1< rom evensuch an outline as this we see thattlie portion assigned for today 's lessonis just the story of a sample leader ofthe devil's followers , whose end Issurely foretold in I' s. ix , 17; Matt ,xxv , 41. I t is part of t l ie great king-dom story of l i ie book and must beconsidered iu t h a t connection as wollas in its personal relat ion to indi-viduals. It is the record of a drunkenrevel witb which Uml interfered sud-denly. It was a grea t gathering ofgreat people iu the eyes of the world ,and doubtless those invited felt asmuch honored ns Hainan did (Es.v, 5) when invited to the banquet ofQueen Esther. The golden aud silvervessels which had been taken fromthe temple of the Lord at Jerusalemwere used as common dr ink ing ves-sels, and they praised all gods exceptthe liv lug and true (lod.

In the midst cf their drunken revelrya very strange and s tar t l ing thinghappens, for thp lingers of :v man'shand are seen wri t ing words upon theplaster of the wall of the k ing 's pal-ace, and Ihe king saw the part of thehand that wrote (verse 0). The kingis filled with trembling and dismay, nnd all his wise men are called to in-terpret the words, but they eould notread the writing (verse 8). This isthe third t ime in this book that thewisdom of this world failed to under-stand the things of God (ii , 10; v, 27).How true it is that "the things of GodUnoweth no man , but the spirit ofGod" (I Cor. ii , 10). AU the wisdomof this world is utterly at fault con-cerning things heavenly. The opinionsand surmises of people are not worththe breath that utters them when theyventure upon the things of God. Thereare unseen agents al l about us , andwhile the hand of the Lord is againstHis enem\ps it is upon all them forgood tha t seek Him (F.z. vii i , 22. .The queen hears of the unusual andstart l ing event , nnd , coming into thebanquet house and seeing the k inggreatly troubled and his lords aston-ished and the wise men helpless, sheremembered Daniel and his marvel-ous skill In in te rpre t ing hard th ingsIn lhe days of Nebiichadiiezzer , andshe said . "I.i'l Daniel I.e .a i led and li 'sw i l l show Hi.- interpretation" (verses10-12). When Dan lol came into thepresence of the king he w.-is told ofthe i n a b i l i t y of all t he wise mon tointerpret t h e w r i t i ng and was offereda great reward or groat rewards ifhe would do it (verses 13-10). Dis-da in ing the proffered rewards, Danielsaid , "Yet I will read the wr i t ing untothe king nnd make known to him theinterpretation" (verso IT) . We i h i n kof Abraham 's rejection of t h e offer ofthe k ing of Sodom, of Elisha's re-jection of Xaams in 's g i f t s and ofPeter's remark t l i . i t the things of Godcannot be purchased w i t h money. Therefusal of the man of God to go homewi th Jeroboam or accept his g i f ts(I Kings x i i i i is also on t h e same l ine .

Da niel then reminded (l ie k ing ofwhat the most high God had done forhis father a i n l how lie liad humbledh im and added fearlessly and sa 'sirdi-ingly. "Thou hnsl not humbled thin *heart , (hough thou knowest a l l t h i s ,but hast l if ted up thyse l f against theLord of heaven. * » * and Die Godin whose h a n d t h y breath is andwhose are a l l t h v wnvs hsist t hou notglorified" (verses 22, 23). What asearch ing word for m u l t i t u d e s of peo-ple .' The t i m e of a l l earthly kingdomsis fixed. Only the kingdom of God iseternal. The Lord is a God of knowl-edge, and by Hiui actions are weighed(I Sam. ii. 31. (bit* days are numbered, our thoughts and act ions weighed, andthe life story in n mortal ivuly will brfinished some day. However muchriches and honor may have been ob-tained, the question conies , "Thenwhose shall those th ings he?"
