Island Events

Wednesday 13th March at 2.15pm at theRiverside Centre

Talk by Bryn Davis on 'The Work ofAmnesty International'In his talk, Bryn will be illustrating the vital workdone by Amnesty International by showing us thescale and variety of cases they work on.

He will also be explaining the campaigning work they do on the Island.

Thursday 21st March

Annual Members' Spring LunchIt was decided to move our Annual Lunch forMembers to after Christmas this year to,hopefully, brighten up the winter months.

This year the lunch will be held at the NewHolmwood Hotel at Egypt Point in Cowes.

Numbers are limited and places will bereserved as and when payment is received. Areserve list will be maintained in case of

cancellations.

Talk by Bob Hyde on 'Working withthe owners of Yaverland Manor'Bob will be talking about his experiences ofworking with the owners of Yaverland Manor– Commander Penryn Monk and theHonourable Sheila Monk.

To give you just a taster of what is to come, Penryn Monk was the person who drovean Austin 'Baby' Seven across Australia from South to North via Alice springs.

Thursday 16th May 2019 - 2pm for 2.30pm

“From Hospital Beds to Flower Beds”

GUIDED TOUR OF VENTNOR BOTANICAL GARDENSWe have all wandered around theBotanical Gardens but this is a visitwith a difference.

Jonyth Hill, who worked here when it was a hospital, will be guiding us through thegardens, showing us the many special areas including the history of and the newdevelopments in the Japanese Garden, the Aboriginal art in the Australian Garden and,hopefully, the South African Garden in full flower. We will also have a chance to seethe tunnel and may even see the elusive Wall Lizards. Our visit will also include thefamous Ventnor Botanic Hops and a chance to buy one of the beers or lager brewedfrom them ….. maybe with lunch?

For those arriving early, lunch may be had at the Plantation Room Cafe or theRestaurant in the gardens.

Thursday 13th June 2019 -2.15pm to 4.30pm at HaseleyManor (to be found off the Main Road atthe Sandown end of Arreton)

ANNUAL STRAWBERRY TEAFor the second year, we are delightedto be holding our annual StrawberryTea at Haseley Manor in Arreton bykind permission of Anthony and VivianRoberts.

This is reputed to be the oldest house on the Island. The first record appears in theDomesday Book with it being previously owned by King Harold, the unfortunate loser atthe Battle of Hastings in 1066. Other previous owners have included three furtherkings:- King William I, King William II and King Henry VIII. It was also the home of thejudge Sir Thomas Fleming who tried Guy Fawkes. As an indication of its age, part ofthe South Wing contains Norman timber carved by the monks at Quarr Abbey in 1319.

Come and join us at this historical house and gardens for our ever popular Strawberry Tea.

Tuesday 9th July 2019 – 5.30 for 6pm -Visit to RNLI Lifeboat Station atBembridgeThe visit will commence at the Inshore Boathousewhere there will be a chance to view the D ClassInshore Lifeboat and its state of the art launchingtractor.

We will then proceed to the Main Lifeboat Station tohear about the history of the station and its modernslipway launched Tamar Class Lifeboat.

AND because it is training night, we will be able tosee the Lifeboat launched on a training mission(that is if it isn't already out on a rescue!)

Cost £7.50 (includes donation to Lifeboat) - BOOKING REQUIRED

Thursday 15th August 2019 10 for 10.30am Visit to Fort Victoria

Our visit to Fort Victoria, will start with a talkon the history and archaeology of the sitefrom the first fort built for Henry VIII in 1545through to the current fort built for LordPalmerston in the 1850s and its continuinguse until the 1960s.

After the visit to the Archaeology DiscoveryCentre, those interested, can indulgethemselves in visiting the Model Railway or the Reptile Centre although these are notincluded in the cost of the trip.

Wednesday 11th September – 2.15pm atthe Riverside CentreRetired Yeoman Warder, Mitch Jones, will bereturning to talk about some of the famous orinfamous prisoners.

These could be tales to make your hair stand onend – not to be missed!

Day Trips to the Mainland

Thursday 6th June – Day Trip to visit Nymans (NT) West Sussexdeparting on the 9.15am Hovercraft from Ryde (please arrive by about8.45am to allow time to park and register) and returning on the 7.05pmfrom Southsea. COST £35.00 for coach, gratuities and Hovercraft farePlease bring your NT membership cards with you (non members willhave to pay an entrance fee on arrival at Nymans). Please also ensureyou all have a Blue Hovertravel card with you. They can be ordered

online or at Ryde Hovercraft Terminal.

Nymans – Enjoy a day out at the National Trust's Nymans, once the country retreat ofthe Messel family which has beautiful views stretching across the Weald.

Wander around the colourful summer borders & ancient woodland plus the partial ruinsof the Gothic style family house which suffered a fire in 1947.

Several rooms areopen in the housewith an exhibitiongallery relating to theMessel family.

There is a good sizedcafe selling lunchesand teas, usingseasonal food,together with a largeshop and a second

hand bookshop. There are also plants for sale.

Wednesday 2nd October – Day Trip – VISIT TO WIMBORNE MINSTER &MAX GATE (NT) in Dorset departing from Yarmouth on the 10.05am ferry(please arrive by 9.20am to allow time to park, be ticked off a list and buyyour ferry ticket), returning on the 6pm ferry from Lymington. COST £21.00incl coach & gratuities (Please Note, the Wightlink ferry fare is not includedin the cost and is to be paid for by individuals). Please bring your NTmembership cards with you (non members will have to pay anentrance fee on arrival at Max Gate). Wimborne Minster. Wanderaround the historical markettown of Wimborne in EastDorset with its many beautiful15th-18th Century buildings.There is a large Saxon churchwith fine Norman and Gothicarchitecture and it is famed forits chained library.

Wimborne also has manysmall specialist shops plus afine range of pubs and cafés.It is intended that we all haveour lunch in Wimborne as MaxGate only has a very small self service café selling tea, coffee, cakes and ice cream.

From Wimborne, we travel on to Max Gate, former home of Dorset’s famous author &poet Thomas Hardy who designed the house himself in 1885. In this atmospherichouse he wrote many of his most famous novels including Tess of the d’Urbervilles &

Jude the Obscure aswell as most of hispoetry. The house has3 floors of rooms tovisit and is stillfurnished with a feworiginal pieces offurniture from whenThomas Hardy was inresidence.

Retrace Hardy’ssteps, wander in thespacious gardens andvisit the small self

service café. There is also a selection of gifts and books for sale.
