By Migael Scherer Special to the Weekly Miriam Drahn wasn’t satisfied with the minimum requirements of her gradu- ation project. “I wanted to go beyond a 12-page report on the subject of sexual assault,” she says. Using painting, photogra- phy, powerful language and the help of fellow students, she launched an awareness campaign for the month of April – Sexual Assault Awareness Month – that she hopes will change hearts and lives. Drahn knew she need- ed eye-grabbing posters. She began with “I Use My Strength,” a phrase she encountered in her research, designing and painting 2-foot by 3-foot signs using her own state- ments. “I Use My Strength to Stand Against Rape” reads one against a swirl of color. Others include “I Use My Strength to Love, not to Hurt” and “I Use My Strength to Stand Up for Myself.” She then posed and photographed class- mates holding the signs. The results are compel- ling: poster-sized photos of Lopez kids looking directly at the viewer, positive and powerful. Familiar faces, many of them athletes, challenging the rest of us to follow their lead. Each poster stops you and stays with you. Creating the posters was an awareness campaign in itself. Drahn made sure the students in the photos believed in the message, and were committed to respecting women, stepping up if they saw harm being done, and speaking up for themselves. She explained to them the long-lasting impact of sexual violence and the silence that sur- rounds it. “We’re kind of sheltered on Lopez,” Drahn says. “We’re blind to the reality and commonality of sexual assault. It becomes a prob- lem when we grow up here and then enter the real world with this false sense of security the Lopez bubble can create.” Sexual assault is an under-reported crime, especially when perpe- trated by someone known to the victim, as is most common in small commu- nities. The trauma – with nightmares, flashbacks, depression is long- lasting. And it’s easy to buy into the myth that a woman is partly to blame if she’s been drinking, or that it’s okay for men to be aggressive on dates. What Drahn learned in her research about the use of women’s images in advertising appalled her. “Women and girls need to be empowered and need to empower themselves if society’s views are going to change.” In addition to posters throughout the school, Drahn is handing out “I Use My Strength” wrist- bands and talking with stu- dents. She has arranged for Kim Bryan, assistant director of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of the San Juan Islands, along with DVSAS’s new Lopez advocate Kristina Moen, to speak to Lopez High School students in May. Before graduation she’ll also present her paper to the public. Miriam Drahn, and the 45-plus students who were involved in her poster project, intend to leave a legacy of strength for the Lopez community. Miriam Drahn wasn’t satisfied with the minimum requirements of her gradu-ation project. “I wanted to go beyond a 12-page report on the subject of sexual assault,” she says.

Using painting, photogra-phy, powerful language and the help of fellow students, she launched an awareness

campaign for the month of April – Sexual Assault Awareness Month – that she hopes will change hearts and lives.

Drahn knew she need-ed eye-grabbing posters. She began with “I Use My Strength,” a phrase she encountered in her research, designing and painting 2-foot by 3-foot signs using her own state-

ments. “I Use My Strength to Stand Against Rape” reads one against a swirl of color. Others include “I Use My Strength to Love, not to Hurt” and “I Use My Strength to Stand Up for Myself.” She then posed and photographed class-mates holding the signs. The results are compel-ling: poster-sized photos of Lopez kids looking directly at the viewer, positive and powerful.

She explained to them the long-lasting impact of sexual violence and the silence that sur-rounds it.

“We’re kind of sheltered on Lopez,” Drahn says. “We’re blind to the reality and commonality of sexual assault. It becomes a prob-lem when we grow up here and then enter the real world with this false sense of security the Lopez bubble can create.”

Sexual assault is an under-repor ted crime, especially when perpe-trated by someone known to the victim, as is most common in small commu-nities. The trauma – with nightmares, flashbacks, depression – is long-lasting. And it’s easy to buy into the myth that a woman is partly to blame if she’s been drinking, or that it’s okay for men to be aggressive on dates. What Drahn learned in

her research about the use of women’s images in advertising appalled her. “Women and girls need to be empowered and need

to empower themselves if society’s views are going to change.”

In addition to posters throughout the school, Drahn is handing out “I Use My Strength” wrist-bands and talking with stu-dents.

By Lorna ReeseSpecial to the Weekly

While there has been a “Poets Only” writing group on Lopez Island since 2003, the idea for a chapbook emerged out of a meeting of seven poets in the sum-mer of 2013.  When Linda Barton shared her poem, “If only…,”  she remarked it was “not a poem to save the world.” This single com-ment led to a discussion of how the simple act of mak-ing bread pudding late in the night could take one to a deeper recognition of con-nection, communication and asking for what one needs. Then to how any poem could be seen as a way to save the world. The seed planted, the group decided to collaborate on a chapbook, with three poems from each poet, mod-estly titled “How to Save the World.”

Six of these poets -- Linda Barton, Ande Finley, Elizabeth Landrum, Kim Norton, Molly Swan Sheeran

and Janet Yang -- will read from their newly-published chapbook on Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the Lopez Library. The book is dedicated to the seventh member, the late John Sangster who was a well-loved Lopez poet, musi-cian and friend. Born in 1937, John died last November.

“John’s death seemed to galvanize the making of this book,” said poet Janet Yang.  “It suddenly became even more important, I think, to all of us.  The project was well underway when we learned he had died, and working on the book became a way to tie him more firmly to us, a way to not lose him quite so sud-denly.” Yang loves to make things, including poems. And pictures. And books. And more.

“It was unthinkable to do anything else,” says Ande Finley. “We miss John’s ener-gy and his inspiring presence so much.” Finley is  thrilled to  see her long-held dream

of writing manifesting in her Lopez forest home after filing away her literary life until all her kids left home.

Molly Swan-Sheeran, one of three founders of the poets only group along with Sangster, has written poetry for 50 years, and has been a metalsmith for 33. “John was one of our early members,” she notes. “He would love that we published the book.”

Elizabeth Landrum served with John for two years as poetry co-editors for SHARK REEF, an online literary magazine published from Lopez for 14 years. “For me,” she says, “poetry is a channel for introspection and observation, as well as for healing. I’m inspired by the beauty of Lopez, the inner world of dreams, poignant stories and other poets.”

Linda Barton loves words and the endless-ness of them.  “Poetry came to me late in life which is fortunate because I could grow into it.  It represents the perfect blend of brevity, humor and truth. I find it allows a focus no other medium can.”

Kim Norton, the sixth poet, is currently grandma, gardner, walker, poet, and teacher of teachers.

Landrum, Finley and Swan-Sheeran have all

been published in SHARK REEF Literary Magazine (sharkreef.org) which is sponsoring the event in con-cert with the Lopez Library to commemorate National Poetry Month. This has become an annual event at the library over the years.

“How to Save the World” will be for sale at the read-ing and is available at the Lopez Bookshop.

Lopez is in for a treat. Tracy Grammer, “One of the finest pure musicians anywhere in folkdom” (Boston Globe), is coming to perform at the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts on Sunday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tracy is known for her springwater-clear alto voice, perfectly intoned violin playing, and pristine finger style guitar – not to mention her mas-terful and humorous sto-rytelling.

Tracy first rose to acclaim as half of the “post-modern, mythic American folk” duo, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer. From

1998-2001, the duo released three internationally cel-ebrated, folk chart-topping albums and, in 2002, toured with  Joan Baez as featured artists and Baez’s band members.

The Pasadena Weekly referred to her as “A grace-fully gifted multi-instrumen-talist (and) singer”, and she is known for her abil-ity to bring fans on “a soul journey” with her music. Robert Harrison, LCCA Assistant Director, states, “I have been following Tracy’s

music for over a decade and am thrilled that she will be performing here at the Center.”

Since Dave’s tragic pass-ing in 2002, Tracy has remained a favorite on the folk circuit. She continues to tour throughout the United States and Canada, and has performed in Europe and Japan. In addi-tion, she has recorded with Mary Chapin Carpenter, and she is the only per-former who has been invit-ed to play the renowned

east-coast Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 13 years in a row.

Tracy continues to release solo albums, as well as albums with recovered and reclaimed Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer material. Her most recently released album, Little Blue Egg (2012), was the #1 most-played album on Folk Radio and #1 listener favorite on Folk Alley in 2012. For more information about Tracy, please visit www.tracygram-mer.com.

Tickets are now on sale for $15/adult and $7/youth at the Lopez Center office, Paper Scissors On the Rock, Blossoms, Lopez Book Shop and www.lopezcenter.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door.

Heart-wrenching is the word Edith Edwards uses when she thinks about orphanages and senior homes that open their doors to people with no homes or families.

So she decided to do something about it.

With her sister Becky

Edwards, she is presenting a benefit for an orphanage and senior home in Tijuana, Mexico on Saturday, May 3, 7 p.m. at the Community Church.

The sisters will sing songs from the 40’s - the 60’s, opera arias, spirituals and religious selections. In addition to playing the piano accompaniment to Edith’s songs, Rebecca will perform two solo piano pieces.

About the orphanage and senior home

The City of Angels orphanage has served children from newborns through to their early 20s. There are 42 children in the orphanage at the present time; however, they serve 50 to 60 children per year. Some of the children are deserted by parents; others come from families so poor they cannot afford to feed or educate their children. Most of the children fall between the ages of 3 and 15 years of age.

The orphanage is not sup-ported by the government and is always in need of sup-port in order to provide for all the needs of these chil-dren – from housing costs such as electricity, water, etc. through food, clothing and supplies. Right now they are particularly in need of a van and of washers and dryers. The orphanage does have a sponsorship program where we can select and sponsor a particular child.

Refugio Old Folks’ Home serves 80 to 100 senior citi-zens who have no home or family.

Many Lopezians have visited these two sites, going down to remodel buildings, build new sec-tions, etc. through the auspices of Lopez Island Community Church. The teams take adults and children from Lopez who spend several days in Tijuana working hard to assist these two worth-while projects.

About the performersEdith has performed

as soloist at many special events and church services throughout the years. She has also sung in choirs and small vocal groups. Edith currently resides on Lopez Island where she runs a small rescue farm for unwanted animals.

Becky earned her doc-torate in musicology from Princeton University and is currently a Professor at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash. Becky has an extensive background in both accompaniment and solo performance. She accompanied an opera sing-er doing concerts through-out Italy. Becky is the author of numerous articles in musi-cological journals including the prestigious American Institute of Musicology’s Musica Disciplina.

“It’s a lot of work but its a lot of fun,” said Edith. “We’ve making music for years.”

Commotion behind the Community Center?

The LCCA is starting construction on an unheat-ed storage building behind Lopez Center this week. The project will replace the conex containers that have provided storage for many years, but are now in need of replacement.

The building is being constructed by Alvord Richardson, with Green Earth Landscapes doing the site preparations and Donnie Poole paving a walk-way between the new build-ing and the Center.

Planting the promiseLast October marked

the first year of the plant-ing of red tulips by mem-bers of The D.R.E.A.M. Team (Drug Related Education and Awareness Mentors) and Young Ambassadors of Lopez during Red Ribbon Week as a representation of their commitment to live a drug free life.

Spring has brought a reminder of that promise as their tulips bloom red in prominent places and yards throughout the com-munity. “April is Alcohol Awareness Month,” says The D.R.E.A.M. Team advi-

sor Della McCullough, “And is great month for these tulips to bloom. The kids work hard to get their pre-vention message out and they rely on the adults to help them draw the line not only between alcohol and youth, but between drugs as well.”

Students from Lopez School D.R.E.A.M. Team and Lopez Island Prevention Coalition’s Young Ambassadors plan to sell tulips blubs again in the fall for those who missed to opportunity to participate.

“Plant the Promise is such a wonderful symbol

and visual reminder of how a community can unite to prevent substance abuse,” reminds Georgeana Cook, coordinator of the Lopez Island Prevention Coalition. For more infor-mation or to order your bulbs call the coalition office 3770.
