Strangers on the BeachBy Josh Pahigian

When eccentric billionaire Ferdinand Sevigny’s latest stunt, to sail around the world blindfolded, goes awry, he lands in Maine just as the summer tourist season is beginning. Despite mounting evidence to the contrary and an investigation by local police, Sevigny, while holing up in one of the town’s grand hotels, refuses to admit foul play was involved in his mishap. As the tourists arrive, including two intriguing strangers, a troubled local teenager inadvertently uncovers evidence that presents him with the opportunity to change his lot. The teenager, adventurer, and a host of townspeople will be forced to make decisions that will define them forever.

Josh Pahigian, who earned his MFA in creative writing from

Emerson College, always loved writing and sports. Those two

passions have led to seven baseball-related books. But he also kept

his hand in fiction, he just needed to find the right idea for a book.

After moving to Maine, he worked part-time in Old Orchard Beach,

a job that helped him get to know the famed beach town. A short

time later, he and his wife spent more than 40 summer days on

the beach. That long, wonderful summer helped Pahigian develop

an even better feel for the rhythms of the area and gain a good

understanding of the local beach scene, allowing him to develop the

authenticity he was seeking and the confidence necessary to write

what would become his debut novel, Strangers on the Beach.

Josh Pahigian

“Ernie knew that finding the body was the key. And just because he was handing over jurisdiction to the feds didn’t mean he wouldn’t beat them in the end. In each interview the reporter had asked him to

speculate as to the whereabouts of the body. He didn’t know, but

he’d find it, he’d told them. As he’d repeated those words, the idea

had crystallized in his mind, narrowing his thoughts into a sort of

longing. The body, the body, the body.”

The Iciest, Diciest, Scariest Sled Ride Ever! By Rebecca Rule Illustrated by Jennifer Thermes

On a cold, icy winter day when “the world was ice and we were skaters without skates,” seven children set out on a sledding adventure that soon soars to epic proportions. Lizzie and her friends convince Grampa Bud to let them use his custom-built runner sled—an old-fashioned travis sled built for speed. But first they have to get the long sled up the iciest, diciest, scariest hill ever!

U.S. $17.95 / CAN $19.95ISBN: 978-1-934031-88-9Children’s book, hardcover, 9 x 11, 36 pages, Ages 4–8

Rebecca RuleBecky is the author of Live Free and Eat Pie and Headin’ for the Rhubarb: A New Hampshire Dictionary (well, kinda). She is also the author of three short story collections about New Hampshire. Rule is best known for her live storytelling events, many sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council. The story that became The Iciest, Diciest, Scariest Sled Ride Ever! began as one she told orally to audiences around New England. The inspiration, she says, came from her father, who told about a hair-raising ride he and a bunch of his friends took on a travis sled, a long, old-fashioned sled with steel runners. She worked on the story, off and on, for almost ten years before she found exactly the right ending. This is her first children’s book. And though Becky loved to sled and ski and snowmobile as a kid, now she says she’d prefer being snowed in. If she was one of the characters in this book, she says she would probably be the Patty that wants to go home and have cocoa (though she might not say so out loud!).

JennifeR TheRmesJennifer is a children’s book author and illustrator whose books include Maggie & Oliver, or A Bone of One’s Own (a middle-grade novel written by Valerie Hobbs), Sam Bennett’s New Shoes and When I Was Built. In addition to being an avid reader, an obsessed gardener, and an adorer of cats, Thermes also creates illustrated maps for publishing and magazine clients. She lives in an old farmhouse in Newtown, Conn., with her family, two cats, one dog, and countless mice. In order to draw all the white snow and ice for this book, Jennifer says she used a lot of line work to exaggerate the sense of motion of the kids slipping and sliding around. “Since snow is white,” she says, “it’s easiest to draw by filling in the shadows it casts.” Her favorite winter activity is baking cookies (and she’s only half-kidding about that). She loves curling up by the fire and watching the snow swirl around outside during a storm, but she’s also pretty good at building snow-people.

“Some of us laughed.

Some of us screamed.

Some of us did both at the same time.”“Thermes beautifully conveys the awesomeness of the

hill they have chosen to tackle; none of the kids will speak

their fears aloud, though their faces say volumes. … The

watercolors give a wonderful array of viewpoints, showing

the path of the sled run as well as close-ups of the children:

fresh-faced and having the time of their lives.”

Most importantly, Ida (a.k.a. the alter ego of popular performer Susan Poulin) is a daughter, sister, wife, and best friend who draws upon her experiences (as well as those of the noble and majestic moose) to offer practical and hilarious advice on relationships, physical fitness, stress, housecleaning, work, shopping, fun, and more. Actress and writer Susan Poulin was born in Jackman, Maine, and graduated from Westbrook High School. Her experiences studying theater at the University of Southern Maine in the 1980s led to the Downeast Theater Collective, a three-actor team that performed at the old Odd Fellows Hall in Portland where the group also shoveled coal into the furnace to help pay the rent. After a six-year acting break, Susan discovered actor-generated theater and

began performing again, this time original material at the Pontine Movement Theatre in Portsmouth, an experience Susan calls “very empowering.” In 1994, Susan eloped with fellow performer and artist Gordon Carlisle. While driving across America, the newlyweds developed the idea that would became the stage show, In My Head, I’m Thin. The duo soon formed Poolyle Productions and took the show on the road. Her acting career was starting to roll. Still, Susan continued to run Sparkle Susan Housecleaner Extraordinaire to help pay the bills. Then, in 1996, Susan was competing in a Yankee storytelling contest when she realized all the storytellers were men who told stories with a similar voice and outlook. A short time later, as she sat staring at a blank computer screen, a voice popped into her head: “Hi, I’m Ida and I’m a Home Shopping Networkaholic.” Ida LeClair was born. Drawing upon her Maine and Franco-American roots, Susan created a now beloved character with a good heart, a strong sense of herself, and a real joie de vivre. The first Ida show, Ida: Woman Who Runs with the Moose debuted in 1997. Since that time, Susan’s alter ego, Ida, has continued to grow in popularity, starring in five stage shows, a weekly blog, and now her first book. Seems Ida really is livin’ the good life. On misplaced resentment:

“I’d see how many fish Grampy’d catch and get discouraged—you know, start thinking the fish were conspiring against me, deliberately choosing Grampy’s line over mine.”

On being prepared:“We need to know what to do if we’re on one of our field trips, and, God forbid, one of us needs first aid or something. Right now, all we have in our first-aid kit is pre-moistened towelettes, ibuprofen, and Hershey’s Kisses.”

Don’t worry, be crabby! When Vermont author Brian Benoit was young, he would

entertain his brother on long car trips with sea creature

hand animals. Years later, he introduced the creatures

to his own children, who loved hearing stories about the

Crustacean VacationWritten by Brian Benoit Illustrated by Marty Kelley

From out of the sea, from out of the spray,The crab family’s going on holiday!

And so begins a grand day out at the seashore, as a family of crabs ventures on land to picnic on the beach (yum, peanut butter and jellyfish!), play games in an arcade (not even a crab wins at The Claw), and slide and glide in a water park. This is no ordinary boardwalk. Here, a seagull runs the candy store, a shark sits in front of a tattoo parlor, a sea horse hawks prizes, and the water park’s lifeguard is an octopus. Join Mom, Dad, two crablets and Grannie as they create holiday memories like no other. Young readers will delight in the clever rhyming verses paired with wacky and wonderful illustrations from the imagination of acclaimed New Hampshire artist Marty Kelley.

John Ford

Suddenly the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine By John Ford, Sr.

Retired Maine Game Warden John Ford has seen it all. He’s been shot at by desperate prison escapees, been outwitted by wily trappers, and rescued scores of animals. As a tenacious and successful warden, he was always willing to spend the time needed to nab violators of the state’s fish and game laws. At the same time, though, he wasn’t a cold, heartless, go-by-the-book enforcer; he usually had a good quip ready when he slipped the handcuffs on a violator, and he wasn’t above accepting a lesson learned as sufficient penalty for breaking the law. Ford is also a very gifted storyteller and he writes of his adventures in Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good, a collection of true tales, both humorous and serious, from the trenches of law enforcement, and also includes heartwarming accounts of his rescue of hurt or abandoned animals.

U.S. $16.95 / CAN $18.95 ISBN: 978-1-934031-94-0Non-fiction/Outdoors, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 208 pages

“John Ford’s stories from his long career as a Maine game

warden are offered with humility and good humor, and

demonstrate an abiding affection for the land, creatures,

and quirky characters of Maine. Ford is an appealing

character, a great storyteller, and he’s FUNNY.”

whatthey’re saying

“They were still a few yards away, coming directly toward me. My heart was pounding wild-ly, and I actually feared they’d hear it long before they reached me. I remained completely still, waiting for

the right moment to ambush them, hoping not to get shot in the

process. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Their feet crushed the frozen

ground as they walked. Again they stopped, briefly lighting up the

back of the field. I thought they’d never reach me. Crunch, crunch,

crunch. They were getting closer. I remained motionless, tucked

up against a tree along the edge of the field. I could barely see

them as they slowly inched my way. It was show-and-tell time! I

jumped out of the woods, aiming my light directly at them while at

the same time screaming, ‘Game warden—hold it right there!’ ”

BacktrackBy V. Paul Reynolds

In Backtrack, former naval officer, avid outdoorsman, sportsman, editor, and award-winning journalist V. Paul Reynolds journeys back along the path of his life to revisit and share with readers many of his outdoor experiences. Reynolds was introduced to the outdoors by his father, Harvard Reynolds, in the 1940s. Harvard took his son to many of his own favorite hunting and fishing spots, helping give birth to his son’s lifelong love affair with the outdoors. Later, Harvard eventually took his son to his first smoke-filled hunting camp, where amber liquid flowed and profanity filled the room. Reynolds soon understood how the outdoors could bestow both the love of nature and the joy of friendship.

Bert and I

Bert and I...The BookBy Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan

Bert and I ... The Book features more than sixty classic “Bert and I” stories. The characters everyone loves and remembers are all here: Bert and his fellow fisherman known only as “I”, Gagnon, World Champion Moose Caller, Virgil Bliss, the dirtiest man in Hancock County, Arnold Bunker, Kenneth Fowler, Camden Pierce, Harry Whitfield, and many more. The stories are drawn from five “Bert and I” albums recorded over nearly two decades, including the seminal Bert and I ... And Other Stories from Down East, perhaps the most important comedy album in New England history. Bert and I ... The Book also includes the first complete “Bert and I” discography, including original album art and liner notes, as well as an introduction by Rebecca Rule, a New Hampshire author and storyteller (Live Free and Eat Pie!, Headin’ for the Rhubarb!) who writes and performs stories in the grand tradition of “Bert and I.”

The iconic “Bert and I” stories were created by Yale students Marshall Dodge and

Robert Bryan in the late 1950s and performed around campus. The two amateur

storytellers soon recorded a short 10-inch album of 11 stories for friends and

family, but ultimately pressed just a few hundred. However, in 1958, growing

popularity prompted them to record and release the seminal commercial album

of New England humor and storytelling: Bert and I ... And Other Stories from Down

Vampires, it’s true!

As we expand our line of young adult and middle grade fiction, one

theme emerges. All of our titles, whether they are about vampires or

soldiers, historical or contemporary, funny or scary, take inspiration and

roots from real events. The authenticity of these stories is what makes

the characters true and gives the stories meaning.

Mercy The Last New England Vampire By Sarah l. Thomson

Fourteen-year-old Haley is struggling to cope—with her stepmom and baby brother, with her beloved cousin’s terminal illness, with dropping grades at school. When she digs deep into her family history for a school project, she uncovers a disturbing New England tradition and a ghostly past. Haley must overcome her doubts and confront a vampire to save herself and her family. Mercy is inspired by a true story. Mercy Brown lived in Exeter, R.I., in the late 1890s, when the New England vampire tradition held powerful sway. When Mercy’s family members began to die, fear struck deep in the hearts of the small community. Following Mercy’s death, when her brother took sick, villagers convinced Mercy’s father to exhume her corpse, dig out her heart, burn it, and feed it to her brother. He too died—as Mercy had—from tuberculosis. Thomson’s gifts as a storyteller and writer make great use of this disquieting story to weave an exciting coming of age story as Haley learns to live with change, loss, and death.

dahloV iPcaRYou would think that Dahlov Ipcar, who turns 95 this year, might sit back and rest on her laurels. But, the accolades just keep pouring in for this Maine legend, who was awarded the 2012 Maine in America Award from the Farnsworth Museum of Art for her outstanding contribution to Maine’s role in American art; a Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in 2011; and the 2010 President’s Award from the New England Independent Booksellers Association for outstanding contribution to arts and letters. But the artist in Dahlov is never still. Bursting with inspiration, she continues to paint almost every day and is always coming up with new ideas for books, paintings, and other projects.

Her publishing career began in 1945 when she illustrated Margaret Wise Brown’s The Little Fisherman. She went on to write and illustrate her own books, including The Cat at Night and One Horse Farm, developing what would become her signature artwork with innovative color combinations, geometric shapes, and fanciful animals. Now with more than 30 children’s books to her name, and a parallel career as a fine art painter, Ipcar continues to spark the imagination of readers around the world.

Supporting C

unity

We believe it is incumbent on all good people and companies to extend a helping hand to the needy

and to volunteer in some way—even if it is just a seemingly small way—that will help make the

community, state and nation a better place. For this holiday season, we will support and highlight

three organizations that make a difference. We hope you will join us offering support either through

highlighted purchases or direct contributions. Or, if nothing here sparks an interest, please consider

helping a cause that is near and dear to your heart.

OUR FRIEND LISA BELISLE of Yarmouth was the

driving force behind creating the book Our Daily Tread

to honor Hanley Denning, who founded Safe Passage,

but tragically died in a car accident in January 2007.

She was 36. Safe Passage is a Maine-based non-profit

organization dedicated to helping the poorest, at-risk

children of families who work in the Guatemala City

garbage dump by offering programs that foster hope,

good health, and education. We worked with Lisa and

many other talented folks to create and sell the book and

so far sales through Islandport Press alone have raised

more than $25,000 for Safe Passage. To learn more

about Safe Passage or to find out how to make a direct

contribution, please visit www.safepassage.org.

Our Daily TreadThoughts for an Inspired Lifeedited by lisa Belisle

Our Daily Tread features daily inspirational and thought-provoking quotes (presented within the framework of a perpetual calendar) that are grouped by themes such as hope, courage, opportunity, and gratitude. The book’s goal is to inspire people to make a difference in their family, in their town, or around the globe. The book also features personal essays, photographs, and children’s artwork submitted by the volunteers and supporters of Safe Passage.

make it a larger presence and stronger force

in the local community and region, in part

because it will offer much needed gathering

Seashells: Treasures from the Northeast Coastby J. Roach-EvansRelease Date: March 15, 2013

As any visitor to the beach knows, all sorts of treasures can be found if you know how and where to look. This beautifully illustrated pocket guide helps young beachcombers find, and identify, shells of animals commonly found on Northeast shores. Writing specifically with the Northeast in mind, author and artist Joanne Roach-Evans describes clams, limpets, whelks, mussels, oysters, periwinkles, and more, in gentle prose with just the right amount of scientific information to satisfy the budding explorer. Easy enough for pre-schoolers to understand, but scientific enough to satisfy a middle-schooler, Seashells will appeal to any beach lover!

A Flatlander’s Guide to MaineBy Mark Scott RickettsRelease Date: April 15, 2013

A Flatlander is, by definition, anyone not originally from Maine. We forgive them. Really, we do. In fact, we want to help. A Flatlander’s Guide to Maine offers locals, visitors, transplants, wary guests, native animal species, and anyone else uninitiated in the ways of the Pine Tree State a well-researched and finely-illustrated educational guidebook. Readers will learn about the state’s culture, attractions, animals, plants, history, lingo, and many other important aspects of Maine life. We are confident this book will offer an intellectually fulfilling experience. Okay, okay, actually this book is mostly a lot of humorous drawings, silly cartoons, and made-up stories that we think will make you laugh.

This Cider Still Tastes Funny!By John Ford Sr.Release Date: May 6, 2013

John Ford Sr. returns to the outdoors of Maine with This Cider Still Tastes Funny! Further Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine, his follow-up to the highly popular and critically acclaimed Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good. Ford is a retired Maine game warden, sheriff and gifted storyteller who carved out a reputation as a man of the law, but one who wasn’t a by-the-book enforcer. He often came up with a good quip as he slipped the handcuffs on a violator, and he wasn’t above accepting a lesson learned as sufficient penalty for breaking the law. He was also more than willing to laugh at himself.

Nic and NellieBy Astrid SheckelsRelease Date: June 7, 2013

Everyone gets homesick. And Nic is no different. She’s so excited about spending the entire summer on a small New England island with her grandparents that she counts down the days through winter and spring. But when the grand adventure finally begins, she finds tears and loneliness instead of joy and freedom. Astrid Sheckels’ picture book Nic and Nellie is a gorgeously illustrated, heartwarming story of a girl and her beloved dog, Nellie, who slowly learn that new places really aren’t so scary, and that often friends can be found around every corner, even in old row boats, tidal ponds, and stinky mud flats.
