Climate

Kumbang is located 1,5 degree south of the equator. The climate is therefore equatorial, the area being 3 000 km away of the tropical monsoons. The rain season is usually weak and tropical typhons are unknown in this area. Moreover the Kerinci mountain range (1.500 - 3.800 m.) on Sumatra protects Kumbang from the easterly rain winds.

Usually, the "dry" season lasts from January to October with an occasional shower, particularly in the evening or late afternoon. The "wet" season appears in November until end of December with rains nearly every afternoon. Mentawai islands The Mentawai Archipelago was barely touched by the Dutch colonization process and the missionaries had little success there. This allowed the inhabitants to preserve to this day an extraordinary animist and shamanist culture. It is a once in a lifetime experience to live some days with these people.
