SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISING WITH PRIVATE ISLANDS

A tiny solitary island, set in the vast ocean, with only a beach and a few palm trees has often been the subject of inspiration for cartoonists down through the years. However, this theme is also being used more fre-quently for advertising purposes.

private islands are becoming sources of fantasy and imagination for many marketing agencies. they create the perfect stage and attract the consumer, in whom dreams and yearning are awoken and in turn suggest that these dreams could be fulfilled by the company or product in question.©

The Thousand Islands region situated in the St. Lawrence River has to be one of the most beautiful places in North America. On Dark Island you experience more than 100 years of history. At the turn of the 20th century, Commodore Frederick G. Bourne, former director of the Singer Sewing Machine Co., commissioned the construction of a hunting lodge on the island. He appointed well-known architect Ernest Flagg, who took inspiration

from the English castle described in Sir Walter Scott's Woodstock. Even the clock tower with chimes has been replicated. A certain mystery surrounds the castle on Dark Island – with its secret passageways and evocative paintings. Singer Castle is one of the very few historical castles in the United States. The most beautiful and spacious antique bedroom has been fully refurb-ished with stylish furniture. Sink into the imperial king-size bed and relax in the cozy upholstered furniture. Naturally, the exclusive and modern ensuite bathroom is part of your suite. You can rent the entire island exclusively for weddings, family celebrations or business conferences.

Rates:USD 750 per night for the Royal Suite.

Activities:Delight in the island's unique atmosphere as you relax on the spacious terrace, in the garden, on the Skiff House beach or in the Tea Garden. Try your hand at fishing, or swim in the St. Lawrence River, where the water is as clear as glass. There are many excursions to experience in popular Alexandria Bay, Boldt Castle, the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton which houses two original speedboats once belonging to the original castle owner, Frederick Bourne. Not to be missed is a boat trip on the St. Lawrence River past the countless islands, lighthouses and villas. Mon-treal, Ottawa and Niagara Falls should also be visited before your holiday comes to an end.

Alexander Selkirk, the real Robinson Crusoe

The story of real-life castaway Alexander Selkirk is one of the sources for Daniel Defoe’s famous novel, Robinson Crusoe (1719),

about an English sailor who is shipwrecked and spends 28 years on a remote desert island in the Caribbean Sea.Selkirk was not shipwrecked, however, but marooned on an island in the Pacific of his own free will. He spent four years alone on an uninhabited island in the Juan Fernández Archipelago, approximately 700 km off the Chilean coast. Selkirk was an adventurer from Scotland who went to sea and in 1704, after a quarrel with his captain, requested that he be put ashore on the uninhabited island of Más a Tierra where he remained until February of 1709, when he was discovered by Captain Rogers of the sailing ship Duke. Selkirk did not return to England until 1711, when he met the essayist, Richard Steele, who wrote up his story in a publi-cation, "The Englishman" (1713). Daniel Defoe made use of this story in his novel Robinson Crusoe. Selkirk went to sea again and died at sea in

1721, at the age of forty-five.

Allan Jardine, born in 1962 in the county of Fife, Scotland, is a direct descendant of Alexander Selkirk’s brother David. In 1983, he visited the island of Juan Fernandez to unveil a plaque in memory of his famous ancestor, and while there serenaded the bemused local villagers with his bagpipes. Until 10 years ago, he was still living in Lower Largo, the village of Selkirk’s birthplace more than 300 years previously. He now lives in Edinburgh where he works at the Edinburgh College of Art.

We offer various 18th and 19th century editions (English, French and Dutch) of Defoe’s classic as well as Allan Jardine’s cartoon collection, What’s New Mr. Crusoe?, in the Island Shop on our website, www.vladi.de

African SafarisAdventure, romance and elegance – all in style

Africa still retains some of its marvelous wilderness: wildebeest and zebras roam across the vast spaces of the East African plains; elephants bathe in the waters of broad rivers; lions roar in the star-filled night of the sa-vannas. The game and diversity of the landscape is excellent. Tailor-made itineraries ensure the safari provides a unique experience for the guests. All this in a timelessly unspoiled setting with panoramic views.

Visit the beautiful wildlife and wilderness areas in East and Southern Africa for the ultimate safari experience. Get to know the African bush: ex-plore the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Loliondo reserves where a few Purko Masai clans still roam, or the Kruger National Park where there are camps situated in prime wildlife locations that provide guests with the highest standard of personalized and professional guiding. These areas have been untouched by any kind of tourism or development and offer the discerning client a guarantee of privacy, while guided tours will convey an intimate knowledge of Africa’s natural environment.

Enjoy complete luxury in the middle of the African bush. Elephants wander through the camp at night, leopards call nearby. Nowhere else can you get so far from civilization, yet reside in such style. The standards and service of a bygone era are preserved, with emphasis on guests’ comfort,

relaxation and enjoyment of an authentic African experience in the classic tradition. A golden era of romance, adventure and elegance is recaptured in tented camps and lodges.

In the reserves, highly trained and experienced rangers and trackers will introduce you to an Africa few have been privileged to see. Forsyth Island is one of the largest (2,100 acres) entire privately-owned islands in the South Pacific. It is situated in the Marlborough Sounds, a short helicopter ride from New Zealand’s ca-pital, Wellington. The island’s peaks reach 1,100 feet, offering breathtaking views of the Marlborough Sounds, the outskirts of Wellington and of numerous surrounding islands. This wonderful area has one of the best records for sunshine in New Zealand and clear waters. Forsyth Island has 20 miles of ocean frontage and 30 miles of walking and hiking trails. You will be captivated by the island's magnificence and remarkable beauty. Forsyth Island is truly unique and ideal for a family vacation: no biting insects, no snakes, no poisonous plants nor dangerous animals. It is also the perfect setting for a romantic wedding and unforgettable honeymoon.

The comfortable lodge, with 230 sqm living space, offers 3 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a modern kitchen, dining room, generous living area with cathedral ceiling and a wrap-around terrace with luxury Jacuzzi. As you enjoy the sunset and the panoramic views from the terrace, you will be reminded of the now-famous phrase "I am the king of the world!"

The island’s impressive cuisine attracts much praise. Guests are offered traditional menus based on freshly-caught fish and seafood, as well as the fresh produce of the island's garden, served with the finest New Zealand wines from the well-known Blenheim vineyards. The choice of full-board or self catering is available – in the latter case, the very friendly island managers can provide the requested provisions. We also recommend to have a barbecue on the beach of one of the island's own gorgeous bays.

Creekside Winery

Each visitor, who walks over the bridge crossing the small river just before the vineyard and olive grove at Creekside, seems to gasp in awe at the sight of the magnificent garden. It boasts peaceful tranquillity, vastness, lush fruit and magnolia trees. The serenity of the well manicured grounds, strolls among the grapevines, rosebushes and olive trees, the pleasure of fresh fruits such as apricots and oranges and the diverse range of excursions on offer are all reasons why travelers end up staying at Creekside longer than initially planned.

This unique place is situated in the small town of Blenheim in the Marlbo-rough region, the most significant and sunniest wine region in New Zealand – about 30 vineyards here produce a variety of wines and welcome guests to come along and sample their range – particularly popular are the Sauvi-gnon Blanc and Chardonnay. Our tip would be to combine a few relaxing days on Creekside with a stay in the Marlborough Sounds on Pohuenui Island or Forsyth Island.

Creekside offers three bright and stylish double rooms each with its own bathroom and terrace leading out to the garden, a spacious living area with large verandah overlooking the park and a large fully-fitted and open eat-in kitchen. Satellite TV, e-desk (internet, telephone, fax). The friendly management couple ensure that your refrigerator is laden with regional delights for your breakfast and is also happy to assist with grocery shopping. Turtle Island is quite a celebrity in its own right, having been used as a backdrop for the Hollywood movie The Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields. Thus, the intent of the Lomi-Lomi massage is to free the energy flow by releasing stress and tension from the body to restore balance and harmony. The massage is given in a fluid, rhythmic motion, working with the body’s natural flow. During this therapeutic massage, different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time and full-body strokes are used to bring the body back into balance and instill a deep sense of blissful relaxation, peace, harmony and well-being. Vladi Private Islands has spent more than forty years traveling the world to visit, photographand evaluate islands on all five continents. Because of their rarity, islands are the most attractive type of real estate and are incomparableto anything else on the real estate market. The most marketable islands comply with the following criteria:

n TITLE Only unencumbered freehold title is acceptablen MEDICAL Medical services must be within a 90 minute radius of the islandn FAUNA Can you live with indigenous animals on the chosen island (some have mosquitoes, sand-flies ...)n FLORA Get familiar with trees and plants, pros and consn HOST COUNTRY Social envi-ronment, acceptance of foreign investmentn ACCESS Is the island accessi-ble? Harbor, anchorage, landing ...n INFRASTRUCTURE Water, sewage, electricity, telephone, internetn BUILDING PERMIT Availability of permit, size of house, type of developmentn CLIMATE Get familiar with the weather and climate conditionsn ISLAND SURROUNDINGS Neighborhood, amenities, services and also crime level

Technological advances such as solar and wind energy, prefab-ricated houses and desalination processes have ensured that the advantages of a mainland property over an island property have all but disappeared.
