GulfBreezeBillabong Girl’s Surf Camps
By Mike Murphy
In June the Padre Island Surf Camp (PISC) held the rst of three girls only surf camps scheduled this summer. The PISC provides personal attention with a knowledge-able staff that helps campers have an enjoyable learning experience.
Padre Island Surf Camps…..keepin’ the stoke Josh Harper and Rob Pruett co-founded the PISC three
years ago. Josh lives in California and manages the Billabong Camps programs internationally. Rob Pru-ett manages the surf camps here in Corpus Christi. All PISC surf camps are held on the beach adjacent to the seawall at the city parking lot off of Windward Drive.
Scott Gasiorowski, a long-time local resident and high school teacher, is currently the program director of oper-ations on the beach. Other PISC instructors for the girl’s surf camp included Chris Stolley with past surf camp ex-perience; Josh Perez, Justin Brown, Levi Fannin and Mi-
chael “Zot” who all started with PISC this summer.
Billabong Women’s Surf Camp …..open to all ages
The recent Girl’s Surf Camp included 15 campers of various ages. The 9:00 am-1:00 pm schedule starts with the PISC core activities: stretching and warm up exer-cises, safety and ocean awareness, sur ng etiquette, dry land instruction, equipment orientation, importance of and ways to avoid sun exposure. After the basics are covered, campers spend a couple of hours in the wa-ter before a lunch break then return to surf with the in-structors. The day ends with beach clean-up and a raf e drawing for sponsor goodies.
Jacey McClary, age 11, has lived in Portland for a couple of years. Her parents, Stacey and Josh enjoyed watch-
ing Jacey as she successfully learned to paddle herself into the surf, catch a wave and stand up while riding the wave to the shore. Jacey enjoyed her rst day of sur ng and would like to try it again or maybe try windsur ng.
Dana Shia and daughter Anna, age 8, both shared the sur ng experience at the girl’s camp. The Shia’s live on the Island and Anna’s dad also surfs. Anna met a new friend Brynn, age 7, who is visiting from McAllen. They had a great time riding waves standing up with their in-structor helping them catch the waves with a push.
Girl’s Surf Camp….just two more this summerThere are only two PISC Girl’s Surf Camps remaining
this year and with limited space available you may need to reserve your spot early. These camps are scheduled for July 16 and August 20. This lady’s only event is available to all ages. Surfboards, lunches and Billabong goodie bags are provided to all campers. Transportation is also available with pick up and drop off at Benjamin’s Surf Shop at Airline and McArdle or Wind and Wave
Surf Shop in Flour Bluff.
Other Surf Camps…..plenty of options The PISC also has one and ve day, individual and
group surf camp options available through August. For schedules and other information visit the Padre Island Surf Camp web site at http://www.padreislandsurfcamp.com/
