Offering To HelpOffering To Help Tornado VictimsTornado Victims
Most of us have watched with horror as the aftermath of recent tornadoes has been depicted on television and in other media. Seeing pictures on TV is heart-wrenching, but it is much, much worse when you’ve been in the vicinity and seen the devastation in person. Lowell and I were living in the Oklahoma City area when the May 3, 1999, EF5 mass of tornadoes swept through, and we could hear the roar as we huddled in our storm shelter.
I am proud to be a United Methodist and to support the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR responds to natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, major storms and t o r n a d o e s ; a n d disasters of human origin, such as explosions, shootings, and bombings. Through local United Methodist churches and trained disaster response workers, UMCOR provides immediate relief, assistance with cleanup and rebuilding, pastoral counseling, and support for children and youth who have been through trauma.
UMCOR has been in contact with the Oklahoma Conference since a mile-wide tornado spun through the town of Moore, Oklahoma, May 20. The tornado destroyed two primary schools, a hospital, and innumerable homes. At least a dozen children are among the lives it claimed. That tornado was one of at least nine to lumber through Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas, and it was on the ground in Moore for a full 40 minutes. On Sunday, May 19, some 24 tornadoes tore through five states—Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri,
- continued -
Iowa, and Illinois—and destroyed 300 homes. The town of Shawnee, Oklahoma, where two people died, bore the brunt of that outbreak.
Our June 2 communion offering will be sent to UMCOR to help with disaster relief for our friends and neighbors in the Midwest. Please give generously as you are able.

Christine (“Chris”) Cloyd, co-founder of H.O.P.E. Ministry will be our guest speaker on Sunday, June 9. HOPE (Helping Overcome
Poverty Everywhere) exists to raise support for missions. Through speaking engagements and Fair Trade sales they provide sustainable income for families in poverty and profits for additional outreach. Fair Trade purchases ensure workers get a fair, livable wage and work under safe conditions with environmentally friendly practices. Products from HOPE are mostly handmade from recycled materials, for example: paper bead jewelry, banana leaf cards, pine needle baskets, candy wrapper bird houses, and inner tube wallets and purses.
Almost 30,000 children die every day from poverty. Millions
have no access to clean water and
never go to school. 20% of the world’s population has
86% of the world’s weath. The average age in some countries is less than $1 per day. H.O.P.E. believes we can change this.

All donations will go towards paying down the church mortgage
(please designate your gift as “building loan” or “church mortgage.”)
This year we are doing a “Crowdfunding” or Matching Funds drive and this is one way you can choose to help. Please remember that this is in addition to your pledge – not part of it.
