It’s true, it’s no April Fool’s joke, we’re 25! Hard to believe for some, others might think we’re already 50. While a lot has

We sat down (electronically) with original Island Clippings creator Ted Lumley who shared some insights on the start of the Clippings and also was kind enough to submit a breaking news story as well!

We asked Ted to go into detail about the origins of the Clip-pings. He shares some fond memories, interesting facts and

much more. One thing he does stress, which is as important now as it was then, is this paper would not be possible without the support of so many different local business.

CLIPPINGS...continued from cover

buy a small business card ad to break even. I designed a single page with a 7 day calendar and 10 blank business cards surrounding it. I can’t remember what else was on it, but there was no white space. I went around the Island and explained my plan was and had no trouble getting the support I needed.

I rented a used photocopier from Algoma Office Equip-ment and the “No Name Paper” went to press on a single legal size sheet! It went over well and we never looked back for the next 13 years. In that time the paper grew from 1 page to 16 pages mailed out every week to every mail box on the Island. And the Best News of all it is still going strong. I ran a contest in the 3rd or 4th issue looking for a name. The name “Clippings” was submitted by Vince Vernelli. I added the “Island” and the “ISLAND CLIPPINGS” was born!

For the first year we did everything by hand. Each page had to be printed on one side, then turned over and print the other side for 1100 copies at a rate of 12 copies per minute on the photocopier. Each Wednesday of each week our neighbours down the road, Danny and Miche-laine Yandeau, would come over and we would sit at the kitchen table and fold each page in half and then correlate the pages by sticking one inside the other. Do the math - 16 pages = 4 pages X 1100 folded in half and 4 pages X 1100 stuck one inside the other. After 2 years of this we were able to afford a used folding machine which folded the pages in about 30 minutes. We gradually upgraded our printers to faster ones and the last year before we sold to the Foxes, we acquired a printer that would print all the pages both sides, fold and correlate them all at the same time in about 2 hours.

As I look back, it was a lot of work, but we enjoyed every minute of it. I especially enjoyed working on the April Fool’s editions. I tried to keep them as believable as pos-sible and pertaining to a current event. The ideas would come to me a week or two beforehand, again, at night. I found I had to get up and write it out or I would forget what it was (old age). Some of my favourites (that I got a lot of feedback from) are: the syrup producers turning 40 gallons of sap into bottled sweet water instead of 1 gallon of syrup. Telling people the new building at the Richards Landing Marina was going to be a McDonalds. The chan-nel at Sailors Encampment could be dredged by reversing the route to the Sault. The ships would drag the silt out into the lake instead of bringing it in with them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian & Heather Fox and Andrew & Beth Kwon for keeping the Island Clippings alive and well all these years. I must have done something right. They both kept the original format and built around it. I would also like to thank all the Busi-nesses who have supported the Clippings over the past 25 years. It is you who have kept it going as well. I would also like to thank the residents. By shopping local to support these businesses, they wouldn’t keep advertising. It is in-

April 1st Report Submitted by Island Clippings creator Ted Lumley

Just when you thought things can’t get much worse, they usually do. The world is fighting a merciless virus which has affected everyone in some way.

One of the welders working on the Island bridge is a friend of mine. He told me they finished their work 2 weeks ago and had contacted the chief engineer for the project for the final inspection of the repairs to the un-derstructure of the bridge. He completed his inspection last week.

Apparently one of the concrete pillars supporting the bridge super structure shows significant signs of dete-rioration and needs to be replaced. In order to do this, the section of bridge this pillar is supporting has to be removed so that a Crane can be brought in to demolish the existing pillar and lift the new precast pillar into place. The bridge will have to be closed temporarily to facilitate the work.

This will mean implementing the use of a ferry to transport vehicles both on and off the island until the work is completed. Some of the senior residents will re-member the “days of the ferry boat,” before the bridge. Repairs are expected to begin as soon as the ice is gone and completed by early fall.

The chief engineer, Loof Lirpa, was born in Sweden and came to Canada 5 years ago and has worked on such projects as the new bridges on Highway 17 near Whitefish, Ontario crossing the Vermillion River, and the bridge on Hwy 17N at Old Woman River before becoming an inspector for the Ontario Highways. He apologizes for any inconvenience his decision causes but safety is his first concern. For any questions you may have please contact: [email protected]

BACKGROUNDER

ALGOMA LOST APPLE PROJECT

In late November 2019, Sheila Campbell received a link to an article reporting on a study that had been done by a grad student at the University of Guelph. This article talked about the study and id of so called Feral apples trees for possible use in the cider industry. The very next day, Maria Smith sent another link to a story about a Lost Apple Project being conducted by amateur biologists in Idaho. These sparked a long held urge in her to find out more about the trees growing around her. So she contacted the Professor under whom the author of the feral apple study at Guelph worked to ask if they had included any of the trees in this area in their work.

The answer was no but Dr. Husband was very inter-ested to find out that there had once been a viable commercial apple growing industry here. Encour-aged by Dr. Husband’s interest, she contacted David Thompson at RAIN. He too was interested in the possibilities and Campbell put him in touch with Dr. Husband.

At this point Maria and Sheila went to the local library to study the St. Joseph Island Historical Societies stored there for information on that apple industry. They knew that at the turn of the last century there had been a nursery operation operat-ed by David Tait at Carterton that sold apple trees to many local and area landowners. Campbell knew from many fascinating conversations that she was fortunate to have with the late Eleanor Adcock that Mr. Tait had imported stock from many sources including Russia. At this point, we uncovered an article written Special to the Sault Star by Edith Cameron in which she referred to three ledgers from Tait’s Nursery.

Several phone calls later, Campbell found that those ledger’s still existed and located them. The cur-rent caretaker of these wonderful documents, Will Samis, brought them to RAIN so that Mikala Parr was able to review them and scan them into digital records use in our studies.

Further, Maria and Sheila met with David Thomp-son and Mikala Parr at RAIN at which time we formed a plan for a study of the local resources. This was followed a week later by a teleconference between all of the above and Dr. Husband where the plan was firmed up. Mikala Parr, RAIN Research Technician will be RAIN’s lead contact for this proj-ect.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 25, 2020 Changes to Township of St. Joseph Permits/Vouchers process due to COVID 19

RICHARDS LANDING – Due to the Township of St. Jo-seph office being closed to the general public, the follow-ing updates apply:

Landfill Update: Landfill vouchers are required for all non-household dumping. Currently vouchers are available only at Kent-vale Home Hardware, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday 8:30 to 5:00 pm.

Building Permit Update: Applications for building per-mits and guidelines for the homeowner are on the Town-ship website at www.stjosephtownship.com

Completed forms and drawings can be dropped off at 1669 Arthur Street, Richards Landing, in the mail drop box, or mailed to The Township of St. Joseph, P.O. Box 187, Richards Landing, ON, P0R 1J0 for the CBO to review and approve. Enquiries about applications can be direct-ed to the Clerk Administrator, [email protected] or by calling the Chief Building Official at 705-541-7152.

Burn Permit Update: Burn permits are required for all burning as of April 1. This date is set by the Province and cannot be waived by the Township. If you do not have your permit yet, please avoid burning at this time, if possible, to avoid contravention of MNRF regulations. A permit is available online at www.stjosephtownship.com Please complete both pages, sign and return to The Township of St. Joseph, P.O. Box 187, Richards Landing, ON P0R 1J0 or email to [email protected]. We will assign a permit number, sign and return your copy of the permit.

*Note: a limited number of blank permits will be avail-able at the Municipal Office door (Pink Envelope) for those who do not have access to internet or a printer. Please only use these if this is the case. Permits are not valid unless assigned a permit number and signed by Township Staff.

Dog Tag update: Normally the fee for a Dog License increases on April 1. The Township of St. Joseph is hold-ing the dog tag fee at the early bird rate until the office reopens. Please watch for updates on new deadlines.

Due to concerns raised by the COVID 19 Virus, the regularly scheduled April Council meeting for Jocelyn Township has been cancelled.

COVID 19 Announcement from Jocelyn TownshipThough this is not new information, this is a reminder: It is now mandatory that if you are a returning traveller to Ontario, you must self isolate for a minimum of 14 days. In order to prevent uncontrolled person-to-person spread in our communities, all of us must act now:

1. Every single person must practice physical distancing. Avoid close contact with those outside of your immediate families and stay 2 metres apart from other people at all times.

2. All returning travellers must stay home (self isolate) for 14 days. This is meant in literal terms and means stay at home within your property boundaries - do not go on errands, do not pick up your mail, and do not attend any store. This is being enforced by the OPP.

3. Anyone who is ill with mild symptoms, are encouraged to stay home. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention but call in advance.

At this time of great concern for all of us, our Li-brarians and Board Members sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are in good health. In order to protect our staff and patrons the Library is closed until further notice.

When the Library reopens you will see some staff changes. Our Librarian Kristina Leith turned in her resignation on March 6, 2020, with a heavy heart due to family and personal commitments. The Library Board offered the position to our As-sistant Librarian Patti Stevens and after serious consideration she accepted. It became effective March 31, 2020.

This is a stressful time for all of us and we know that it can take a toll on our mental and physical health. I thought I would share some advice from Bird Studies Canada.

Be alert, get prepared, be calm and avoid suc-cumbing to fear or feeling helpless.

Read and follow the precautions outlined in reliable sources only, in particular your federal, provincial and municipal health departments who know the situation near you best.

Look out for your family, friends, neighbours and colleagues, especially those who are at higher risk.

STAY HOME unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to go out practise ‘social distancing’.Wash your hands and DO NOT touch your face.

Here are some things I do to feel better. Get outside and enjoy nature. Spring is here. It is easier to practise social distancing” outdoors.Encourage others to get outside as a healthy way to deal with stress, confinement, and boredom. Connect with friends, family and neighbours via telephone, emails, Facebook and Skype.

Remember that even though the Library is closed, the Librarians can still set you up to read or listen to a huge database of books on Overdrive and Libby. If you aren’t already set up with the 14 digit number, please email the Library at [email protected].
