had taken variety of forms in different part of the Islam world• Spain, North Africa, India & the Middle East

forms they used included:• Muqarnas• Girih Tiles• Calligraphy • Arabesque (2 modes)

• 1st mode recalls the principles that govern the order of the world

• 2nd mode recalls the feminine nature of life giving

Al-Razi• surgeon• wrote the largest medical encyclopedia• explained the nature of several diseases• found a treatment for kidney stones• famous for his study of chicken pox & small pox• first to use opium for anesthesia • developed many surgical tools

Ibn Sina• recognize the contagious nature of tuberculosis• wrote the al-Qanun

• an encyclopedia that identifies 760 different drugs

al-Battani (858 - 929 AD)• astronomer, mathematician & scientist• accurate count of the solar year

• 365 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes and 24 seconds• wrote books on astronomy & trigonometry

al-Buzjani• contributed to mathematics• constructed equations to find solutions • contributed to development of trigonometry • introduced the secant and cosecant• observed the movement of the moon

al-Biruni (973 - 1048 AD)• known for his study on astronomy & science• skilled physician• determined latitudes & longitudes • investigated gravity
