PRESENTATION OF EARLY LITERACY PACK

A nation that is strong in reading culture is a nation that can master various knowledge such as religion, economy, mathematics including science and technology. The cultivation of a reading culture needs to begin from the earliest age whereby the child's cognitive senses can be easily shaped towards positive matters. This is because they are a white canvas of which the design is determined by the parents. Speaking at the Presentation of the Early Literacy Pack in conjunction with the National family Day celebration 2015, on 11 May 2015, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said the Early Literacy Programme is one of the government's efforts towards strengthening the family institution. Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman said parents as role models are responsible in the 'My Family, My Hope' direction so that they can cultivate and instil a culture of loving and enjoying reading within the family. This can be achieved through various efforts including providing suitable books for children's reading or providing a reading corner of which the concept is to strengthen family ties. In this way, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina added, it can establish a harmonious family and bring forth a feeling of love as the importance of reading is a requirement and practise encouraged by Islam. The presentation of the Early Literacy Pack certificates under the Early Literacy Programme is hoped to raise the role of the family institution in empowering the reading culture. Apart from that, it can also to raise the parent’s awareness on the importance of reading from an early age as well as for family members. Source : http// www. rtbnews.rtb.gov.bn

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM TEACHERS ACADEMY

With the aim of enhancing the teachers quality and professionalism in teaching and learning, the MOE established the Brunei Darussalam Teachers Academy (BDTA) in 2013 following His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's titah during the 23rd Teachers Day celebration, with a tagline, Lead, Engage, Aspire and Develop (LEAD), with a tagline: By Teachers, For Teachers. BDTA plays an important role in providing quality development programmes for teachers with help of peers and professionals. It gives teachers the opportunity to build a professional network among other local educators. The Academy’s aim is to support the Ministry of Education (MoE) in achieving its vision to develop a world class education system through the implementation of the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21). A series of workshops were conducted by the Academy team to ensure that any strategy development takes into account key MoE projects and initiatives which are currently in progress, such as Whole School ICT Development (WSID), Computing in Model Schools (CIMS), Brunei Teaching Standards (BTS), Interactive Technologies for teaching and learning, Media In-service Centre (MISC). A series of workshops on designing learning experiences to support development of innovative teaching practices with new teachers were also conducted.

The BDTA offers four selected modules for new teachers and they are Bridging the Gap, Counselling, Assessment and Teaching Style Module and a compulsory module, Action Research Module. Each module requires the teachers to complete a 24 hours semester whereas for the compulsory module, a 56 hours requirement is needed in two semesters. Meanwhile, subjects such as Malay Language, Islamic Religious Knowledge and Science are among the subject included in the Pedagogue Course. Among the activities provided by the academy are professional development programmes such as new teachers programme, forum, workshop and conference. The academy made plans to work along the stakeholders especially schools and teachers as well as updating the academy's website to make it a focal point for discussions, sharing of ideas besides giving information to the teachers for any new developments BDTA will continue striving to empower teachers to lead their own continuous professional development based on their specific needs.

BRUNEI TEACHERS’ STANDARDS

THE Brunei Teachers’ Standards (BTS) was introduced in Brunei by the Ministry of Education in August 2014 to train and improve the competency of Brunei teachers. It has the capacity to transform education through teaching and learning to produce the next generation of Brunei leaders.

BTS will transform teaching in Brunei because, for the first time, there is an indication of what is required.

School teachers now have a guideline to measure teaching performance and competency with the Brunei Teachers' Standard. BTS is not just a checklist of competencies, but a visionary document to improve the quality of teaching across the education system. The BTS like an ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) standard, is a guideline to measure a teacher's competence, such as whether or not the teacher abides to the guideline. The BTS focuses on the impact of the teaching, concerned with the techniques of teaching the visionary aims that go way beyond just getting through the textbook. BTS will make students think independently. High expectations are a requirement for teachers to meet the needs of all students, from students who are most able to students with special education needs.

The teaching standard will also look at weaknesses, and areas that need improvement. This is for the purpose of performance appraisal too, like when the teacher is up for a promotion or to follow a course, measured in terms of the teacher's achievement based on Brunei Teachers' Standard. The Brunei Teachers' Standard will be implemented through a Department of Inspectors. Source: The Brunei Times, 23 Jan 2015

PENGAWAL KUALA DEPICTS THE RAMBA COMMUNITY

Four books to commemorate a century of formal education in Brunei were launched on 15 April 2015 by two faculties at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The Academy of Brunei Studies (APB) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) published two books each to enliven and reflect on centennial development of education in the sultanate.

Two separate books ‘Tradisi Dan Reformasi Pendidikan Merista Jasa Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien (Vol I and II)’ were launched by APB and it consists of a compilation of essays by scholars and history enthusiasts. It consists of 58 topics written by 58 local writers.

The volumes are divided into four themes which are the history of education; education in general; educational system and policy and special education. An anthology titled, ‘Cahaya Terus Bersinar’ which is a compilation of 100 poems by 37 renowned poets in the country was launched by FASS. It carries the theme of education especially on the importance of knowledge for students as the future of the nation along with teachers who are equipped with the responsibility to produce a knowledgeable and noble society.

The second book novel launched by the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty was ‘Pengawal Kuala’ by the first recipient of the Southeast Asian Writers Award (SEA Write Award) Dato Paduka Hj Muslim Hj Burut.

The books were sponsored by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah to act not only as a source of reference but also to help add value to the written academic and creative collection in the sultanate. Copies of the books were presented to senior government officers, writers and academicians of the university. Source Brunei Times.
