Fixed-mobile convergence has evolved as a symbiosis of the fixed and mobile networks. FMC enhances fixed communications services with mobility and enriches mobile telephony with a wide selection of SIP-based services.

Iskratel Convergent Services include a set of end-to-end mobile VoIP applications and single-identity phone-number services for mobile, cable, DSL, FTTx or WiFi networks.

Mobility in a box: FMC with Iskratel is an instant answer to the fixed operators’ mobility requests.

Using a SIP-based suite of solutions, fixed and mobile operators can reduce their CAPEX and OPEX, increase subscriber coverage, extend the continuity of services across networks and improve service revenue. The consequences are customer loyalty and the prevention of churn.

In addition, the IP connectivity enables the mobile operator to use the IP network as a backhaul infrastructure. Using the Iskratel Convergent Services, the mobile operator becomes a global, world-wide service provider without roaming contracts.

How? With Iskratel Convergent Services.

CONVERGENCE-ENABLING MODELS

The Feature Video Fallback enables the successful establishment of calls, even when one of the terminals involved in the call does not support video streaming.

How to address end-users with Iskratel Convergent Services? There are two possibilities. The first one is to offer the substitution approach, where a dual-mode handset completely substitutes for the fixed one.

The second one is the integration approach, where both handsets have a single identity.

For fixed operators the latter represents an option, while for mobile operators both options are appropriate.

Iskratel Convergent Services predominantly belong to the pre-IMS network architecture. A smooth migration to IMS represents a logical step for future evolution.

Why a Fixed-Mobile Service Mix? Fixed operators currently make heavy investments in broadband-access technologies. The ever-increasing last-mile capacity has a double effect. Enhanced user experience ensures subscriber loyalty. But on the other hand, the availability of cost-free web services, including very competitive telephony, represents a threat to income.

Fixed-to-mobile substitution is another concern to be faced by fixed operators. Mobility and attractive mobile devices draw users into the sphere of “mobile-only” communications.

Mobile operators are making large investments in radio-network coverage. They are improving their outdoor and indoor coverage. In addition, they have to reduce roaming fees. These two trends impact on the

revenue source.

A data-transport infrastructure with higher capacities and a larger

base-station density have extended the mobile networks’ capabilities and made it a suitable sphere for web-service providers that present no revenue source. Mobile operators need to expand their own service-offer suite.

No. Convergent services require only minor infrastructural tweaks. The fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) as proposed by Iskratel is a pre-IMS set of solutions. It creates an IMS-like service-delivery environment with the currently existing network elements in the operator’s domain.

From the end-user point of view, the solution does not impose any new requirements on the existing mobile and fixed terminals. It also promotes new communication channels using a Soft-client approach. Dual-mode (WiFi, GSM) handsets are considered in the solution as well.

New, recently developed communication channels that blend fixed and mobile services are an opportunity for every network operator facing new competitors. Convergence brings mobility to fixed operators. However, in addition, it extends the mobile operator’s service portfolio with long-desired SIP-based services.

Converged communications – which matters the most – make communications simpler. No more multiple subscriber identities, contact lists, user interfaces and several bills. What is more, convergence reduces costs, enhances productivity and guarantees end-user satisfaction.

The combination of SIP-based services and mobility represents a new stage in the development of the communications infrastructure.

Convergent Services for Fixed Operators

FMC for VoIP Providers SMS remains one of the most attractive and revenue-generating services in mobile networks. However, the service no longer belongs only to the mobile sphere. Iskratel offers VoIP telephony providers the ability to send and receive SMS messages to mobile and VoIP subscribers.

The SMS concept is available in the VoIP sphere even if a VoIP user is temporarily offline. The messaging system in the VoIP network stores the SMS messages and forwards them when the VoIP user is available again.

This solution is compatible with all types of terminals: hard terminal, Soft-client and dual-mode handset.

Iskratel Convergent Services provide fixed users with a ticket to the world of mobile services using a single subscriber identity.

For residents and general use A secretary has a complete overview of the CEO’s communication channels.

Same internal short-numbering regime for fixed and mobile users.

Greatly reduced costs with unified tariffs for fixed-to-mobile calls.

Employees are not disturbed during meetings.

Voice mail notifications via SMS, MWI (Message Waiting Indicator) or e-mail.

SMS from fixed to mobile and vice versa.

Video telephony, video surveillance, video portals, video blogging.

The users have access to the well-known SIP platform of the fixed operator. The missing component is the end users’ mobility.

While the users are on the move, all the essential services are unreachable outside the corporate environment. Consequently, the productivity of the employees becomes a serious issue.

1. FMC for Business Users with fixed-line primeThe solution is designed as an extension of the IP Centrex functionality. Therefore, the users have access to all the hosted business services that are executed by the business-feature server in the fixed operator’s network.

Mobility comes as an incremental feature: all the services remain available when the user is out of the office.

The solution is suitable for small offices (SOHO).

2. FMC for Enterprise Users with fixed-line primeMany companies with their own communication systems (PBX or IP-PBX) require their employees to have mobility.

Iskratel Convergent Services serve as a means to integrate mobile workers into internal communication systems. They become an integral part of the company’s communication network.

The solution is suitable for medium-sized and large companies.

Convergent Services for Mobile Operators

1. FMC with Mobile Stick The FMC solution with Mobile Stick covers the entire globe. It is used wherever an IP network is available. The Mobile Stick makes the internet into a giant roaming cloud - a mobile operator can virtually extends its “signal” coverage all over the world. This means a world-wide internet community, with Mobile Stick devices, becomes a One Location Area within the home mobile operator’s network.Mobile Stick is a soft client integrated into a USB device with an embedded SIM card. Such a USB device transforms a PC or a laptop into a voice-, SMS-, MMS- and video-capable device. In addition, it enables a presence-status overview, instant messaging, PC-to-mobile device call continuity and much more. The Mobile Stick serves as an additional mobile advertising channel.

2. FMC with Soft ClientSoft Client is a downloadable soft phone that acts as a phone terminal installed on a PC or laptop. The solution is suitable for those operators who trust the SIP authentication and those that require a faster and less demanding solution deployment. Because SIM cards and USB keys are obsolete, the carrier instantly reaches a wider audience of potential users.

3. FMC with Dual Mode HandsetThe Dual Mode Handset (DMH) is the ultimate device for users who are willing to pay more to get a true FMC. Subscribers use it as a conventional mobile device or independently as a soft-client device on WiFi hot spots. The user-presence status is visible on the DMH. For this reason the operator adds the presence-based routing as an additional service. To make use of the full potential of FMC an operator offers Voice Call Continuity (VCC), where a voice call is maintained while traversing from the WiFi to the mobile network and back.

The users have access to a limited stack of services provided by the mobile operators. The missing component is the access to all the attractive SIP-based services.

A business-oriented feature set is currently beyond the scope of mobile users. The productivity of the employees is under threat.

1. FMC for Business Users with mobile-line primeMobile business users are often members of a mobile Centrex group. They have access to all the standard mobile services with internal call rates.

Iskratel Convergent Services integrate the SIP platform with mobile terminals. Suddenly, all the well-known SIP-based services become available while the user is outside the company.

In addition, a mobile operator also addresses the Soft-client approach (PC-based communication).

The solution is suitable for small offices (SOHO).

2. FMC for Enterprise Users with mobile-line primeThe enterprise users simultaneously use mobile and fixed terminals with multiple identities. On the other hand, they are using various different communication services provided by either their fixed or mobile operators.

The unification is carried out by the Iskratel Convergent Services solution. It offers the opportunity to expand the company’s PBX or IP-PBX systems beyond the corporate onto the mobile operator’s network.
