Dear ISH Community, Another good school year comes to an end, and given the size of ISH now with 850 students and 150 employees, we were lucky regarding problems. When you read this, leaving Y13 students will be receiving their IB Diploma exam results, and I am sure that they will be as good as in previous years.

Work on our building extension could start earlier than planned, and as a consequence, students are now spending their breaks in front of the school - and enjoying it! We do consider leaving the area as an option also after completion of the work in January 2013.

Many students and teachers are moving on - thus is the nature of international schools, and to cater for the educational needs of the mobile community is actually the basic mission of our type of schools. We wish them all well and know that they will go with overall positive memories.Mrs de Jong, our tireless editor of the newsletters and -features, has put together an overview of achievements and activities during the last five years, my time here as Principal. It should not give the impression that this is my work: It is the result of the efforts of many teams and groups,

consisting of students, teachers and parents. The role of the Principal is to support all the positive initiatives which contribute to the growth of the young people we work for.

ISH provides a unique framework for learning in an international context. The truly international nature of the ISH and The Hague, the IB programmes and the advantages of a public-private partnership foundation make us one of the most interesting schools in the whole Benelux and beyond. It was a privilege and pleasure to lead this institution for five years, I am grateful for all the support I received during these years and wish the community all the best for a bright future.

Best wishes,

Peter Kotrc

International Day 2012 - huge successWith 200 volunteers and hundreds of visitors (both students and parents), the International Day 2012 was a huge success. Starting the day with a flag parade where 107 countries were represented in a festive procession of students, the day’s entertainment soon took on its tasty and humorous flavour with a special guest appearance of Queen Beatrix - a look-alike! The opportunity for a photo session with this imposter preceded the opening of the Cultural and Culinary Fair by the ISH PA Chairs Olga Estadella and Joann van Loon.An International recipe booklet courtesy of the Parents Association on sale aided fundraising, as did the live auction by the Principal Peter Kotrc of the beautiful hand-made quilt donated by Anita Westin. Report includes special thanks and photos.

Cyber Safety and Social networkingOn Tuesday May 15, 2012 at 19:00 ISH was honoured to have a guest speaker on ‘Cyber Safety and Social networking - the challenges for students and parents’. The information evening was aimed at usage amongst young (teens) with many tips for parents to give advice. In the same vein and at the same time, a Masters in Education guest researcher Elisabeth Chute (ISH teacher of Visual Arts) is concluding her Facebook research at ISH named “Identity Under Construction”, a video is viewable.

Drama delights online now photos and film...The Unique 6 Year 9 productions were 6 musical performances held over the three nights of April 18-19-20, 2012. These performances were the culmination of an interdisciplinary unit in which the students created their own “Jukebox Musicals” by writing an original story tying together some of their favorite pop songs. What was really special about these performances is that the students took responsibility for all aspects of the product: script, acting, singing, dancing, costumes, scenery, musical accompaniment, direction, publicity and lighting. In addition on April 26, 2012 a group of year 10 and 11 students performed for one night only their very own version of the Nightmare Before Christmas. Directed and produced totally by Tosia and Sixto. Well done!

ISH GO India continues...Thank you for all your contributions and support for the project this year. I am pleased to announce that the ISH community has donated over EUR 6000 for Help-Kids in India (www.help-kids-india.org/support.html).The funds will go towards keeping the Little Lillies crèche in operation for another year, the replacement of the old school bus that is used to bring staff and children to the crèche and also towards the crèche children’ s basic medical care. Click to view the Charity’s newsletter. In addition to this, over 200 handmade bags are now in use in the ISH community. The work continues next school year, as this is the nominated school charity for 2012-13, with the ISH Science service trip for y10-12 scheduled for the February holiday 2013. It has been quite a project so far-Many thanks for your support!Subject Area Leader Science, Christine Mak.

ISH Secondary news bulletin 8.6.12With a few weeks left before the Summer break, it could be assumed that the school is slowly winding down and becoming a calm place, but the contrary is true: a number of activities still go on, all supporting different forms of learning. Most prominent is now the fieldwork done by our IB Diploma students which does contribute up to 25% of their final grade: all Science students (= all students) will do research in the field for a few days. Visual Arts students travel to galleries and musea in Germany. Geographers will explore the island of Schiermonnikoog. Y10 are widening their horizons by visiting places in Belgium which ties in with topic studies in different subjects. Y9 have a science related day trip this year until in future a much more curriculum based excursion can take place. In all cases, a public thanks to all the teachers involved who leave their families behind to spend days with a lot of extended responsibilities and reduced sleep.

2009 ISH fundraisingAll five year 9 mentor groups were busy fundraising for this worthy cause. Right up to the very last

minute of donating funds for the Class4Life competition, they were organising fundraising events. They have done silly sponsor walks,

swim4life, sold bracelets at MUNISH, sold cookies during the PTS conferences, have done a Sunday breakfast service and

numerous bake sales. 9E won ‘Action of the Week’ for which they will get Walibi World tickets. Before the Halloween party, people had their nails painted. ‘The Dance4Life Drill’ dance happened

at the Halloween Party, at an expat market where the Mayor of The Hague attended as well. Selling chewing gum when exception to the rules was made for ‘chewing for charity’, face painting

and even dying hair were among the activities undertaken. Three of the five classes were amongst the top 20 of classes fundraising

throughout the Netherlands, totalling more than EUROS 5240 raised.

2010 Haiti

During the months following the earthquake which hit Haiti in January of 2010, the ISH Community pulled

together to raise funds for the Malteser Help Organisation. The motor behind

ISHelpsHaiti, Jutta Clarke, raised an amount close to 8000,- Euros which was used to provide basic medical care for approx. 75 000 people in the area

of Leogane. One important aspect of their work is to secure support for a sustainable period while the country is working on

reconstructing the infrastructure. Focus here is on healthcare including maintaining hospitals.

Remembering Malcolm

In february 2010, prof. dr. Malcolm Davies passed away. He was

our Subject Area Leader for the Arts, Director of the ISH Music

school, Professor at the University of Leiden but first and foremost

a popular teacher of Music and respected colleague. In tribute to

some aspects of his rich life, a memorial concert is held annually

in the newly named Malcolm Davies Auditorium. He will not be

forgotten: he did not just work here, he was an educator in the best

sense of the work, leading his students to enjoy and practice music.

Our choirs, orchestra, bands and the over 200 weekly individual

music lessons, held here at ISH, were based on Malcolm’s initiative.
