CEDIA has started 2012 in grandstyle with the news that its Region 1 membership levels havereached an all-time high.

The Association – which co-owns Integrated SystemsEurope – represents 438 members from across Region 1,as part of a global membership ofmore than 3500. No fewer than 87 new businesses joined theAssociation last year, with furthergrowth in 2012 bound to beassisted by the decision to leavemembership fees unaltered forthe fifth year in succession.

“Growing our membership inthe teeth of this recession showsthat we are delivering on thiscommitment [to ensuring value]and helping our members not just survive, but prosper,” saidWendy Griffiths, CEDIA Region 1’sexecutive director.

Throughout the show, CEDIA isinviting members from certainnations to find out more about theAssociation in country-specificmeetings. Interested integrators, trade suppliers and AV mediafrom France, India, Italy, Spain,Germany, the Netherlands andSouth Africa are welcome to

attend the sessions, which aretaking place on the CEDIA stand.

“We welcome all visitors whoare involved in the residential custom installation sector to comeand meet with us at ISE,” addedGriffiths. “With a huge number ofCEDIA training sessions taking place, they can, of course, experience oureducation programme first-hand.But they can also find out aboutour other activities – the whitepaper resources we offer, theCEDIA Awards and the Connectwith CEDIA networking events thatwe run – which will help them intheir business.”

Once again, ISE is providing avenue for InfoComm to high-light its ever-evolving approachtowards education and indus-try standards, with a busyschedule that encompassesdedicated training sessions andexpert-led seminars.

The opportunity to take Certified Technology Specialist(CTS) exams is one tenet of thisstrategy. Speaking to The ISEDaily yesterday, InfoComm president Greg Jeffreys confirmedstrong pre-registration levels, adding that the CTS option is “asign of our commitment to theprogramme [and another valu-able] service for our members”.

“We are always expandingand refining the content of oureducation programme, andremain open to new ideas andtrends,” added Scott Wills,InfoComm’s director of inter-national education and mem-ber services.

InfoComm is also discussingits continued progress withregard to standards. The associa-tion has published three ANSIcompliant standards since 2008,and at yesterday’s Future TrendsSummit, Joe Bocchiaro III – vice president of the organisation’s

Standards and Industry Innova-tions Program – revealed detailsof current standards projects andthe role that recent develop-ments in this area are playing inbringing a competitive edge toAV industry practitioners.

Bocchiaro will elaborate fur-ther in an ISE Education Zoneclass, ‘Audiovisual Standards inBusiness and Practice’, taking place today at 11.30. Meanwhile,Jeffreys himself will focus on the3M-2011 Projected Image ContrastRatio standard in a session com-mencing at 14:30 tomorrow.

ISE, remarked Jeffreys, pro-vides a “great opportunity toengage with the industry as weseek feedback on future stan-dards development”.

including electrowetting (“the bigadvantage is its switching speed”)and Mirasol Interferometric Dis-play, among others.

The current shape of the OLEDmarket also received Simpson’sexpert consideration. While the lowerpower requirement and fast switch-ing are among OLED’s advantages,

there are still issues to be resolvedregarding larger screen sizes. “Initiallyit will be difficult to compete withLCD in respect of cost,” he noted.

Simpson wrapped up his addresswith a revealing section about newdisplay possibilities arising from current technological developments.

Combining old (phosphor) andnew (UV laser) technologies, LaserPhosphor Display is now “maturingand developing a track record”,remarked Simpson. High-resolutiontiled projection displays are also continuing to gain ground.

Schulz reasoned. Beyond this, thenext step was to move to provid-ing solutions for specific verticalmarkets – such as healthcare, edu-cation or energy management –he suggested.

The key to generating the mostvalue would be building positive rela-tionships, Schulz told the audience.“For us as a distributor of digital products this means adding differentplayers to the network and facilitating

collaboration within the network, ” headded. Integrators, with their technicalknowledge and awareness of the needsof different markets, were the key to achange that is only just beginning.

As an indicator of the scope forindustry growth, Schulz concluded:“We have experienced the beginningof the digitalisation of our world.”

Blackman ‘full of anticipation’ideas have to be developed foreach event, some of which aren’tused or, as in the case ofBarcelona, fall apart. In that case,a set of five rings collapsed 41/2

weeks before the Games started, requiring a radical re-think.

Birch told delegates aboutdealing directly with thepresident of Mexico for itsBicentennial in 2010, and thecorruption that bedevilled theCommonwealth Games in Delhithat year. The trials of severalorganisers, including agovernment minister, arepending. Despite the difficulties, the opening ceremony was atechnical and creative success.

These one-off events areproduced under such pressure, with unbreakable deadlines. “I find people with a televisionbackground are best,” Birchexplained, as they are moreused to such deadlines thantheatre or movie people.

Although “the production ofthese major events is notsomething you can plan to have acareer in”, Birch has workedcontinually on them for morethan a quarter of a century.

give them access to products that are not on the shelves andenable them to easi ly obtaindetailed product information – allcharacteristics of the online shop-ping experience.

Later in his address, Rotbergdescribed a project on which hiscompany was working with theworld’s largest duty free store. Thestore is turning over some $1.5 bil-lion each year – and research hasuncovered the fact that 50% ofpurchases are made on impulse.Digital signage provides a meansfor guiding those impulses, Rot-berg suggested.

This year’s DiSCO conference– the fourth – focused on the

retail opportunity, rather than onthe broader DOOH market it hasprev ious ly covered . Ol iverSchwede, Rotberg’s colleague, noted the technologies that areexpected to transform the digitalsignage market in the comingyears, including HTML5, Androidand e-paper.

The day’s agenda saw presenta-tions on the use of gesture controland interactivity; on enablingsmal l re ta i le rs to compete with “the merchants of cool”; onthe opportuni ty to augment video with audio; and the retailinnovations that are possible withdigital signage.

In another departure from pre-vious DiSCO conferences, thisyear’s presentations were videoedand will be online shortly.

“Excited, full of anticipation, and alittle apprehensive.” That’s howIntegrated Systems Events MDMike Blackman described how hefelt when The ISE Daily caught upwith him yesterday morning.

A self-confessed technology fan,Blackman said that running theIntegrated Systems Europe show isthe best job he has ever had.

“There are always new thingsto see – it gives me a buzz. Myonly disappointment is that Idon’t get enough time to walkaround the showfloor and seeeverything,” he enthused.

He singled out the newlyinstalled screen at the Europaentrance to the RAI. “This reallyshows what this industry can do –

16 projectors with edge blending,it’s 45m long and 2.8m high. I’venever seen another trade showwith something like this in itsentrance. I walk in and I’m smil-ing. Look what we made happenwith the partners that we have.”

The biggest surprise about thisyear’s show for Blackman? “Wealways say we think we’ll do bettereach year, but our pre-registrationnumbers this year have been phe-nomenal – I underestimated howwell we would do,” he admitted.“If you look at how the economyhas been over the past fewmonths, if we had just stayed stillI would have been happy, butwe’re going up again. That’s apleasant surprise.”

Acoustics sessionThe Introduction to Acoustics

seminar at 11.30 tomorrow will bedelivered by Michael H Weckesser

of WADG. It is designed to giveattendees an overview of the

fundamentals of acoustics, whichare described in terms of the soundwave, the relevant frequency range, the speed of sound and the evolving

phenomena of these. “Acoustics are relevant for the

performance of any room,” saidWeckesser. “They are relevant for

any sound reinforcement system tobe designed into or just installed

into any room. The parameters thatdefine a room will be investigated.”

Issues such as what will beperformed in the room will beexamined. Typical uses might

include spoken word presentations, musical performances, reproducedmusic, or orchestral performances.

The acoustical design of the roomhas to follow requirements in terms

of reverberation time (RT),intelligibility, reflections (wanted and

unwanted), clarity and many more.Where to position the absorbers in aroom. How do these come together

in one single room? What isessential? These are some of the

topics that will be addressed. “In the end – don’t stop with the

room design, integrate the soundsources into the design,” Weckessersaid. “Position the speaker correctly.Choose the right loudspeakers andposition these correctly. It all comes

down to physics.”Part of the ISE Education Zone,

the session will take place in rooms D202-D204.

The newly refurbished Het Scheepvaart-museum – the National Marit imeMuseum in Amsterdam – was the site ofa successful ISE Technical Tour yesterday. The museum uses Dataton’s Watchoutsystem to control a 360°, oval-shapedprojection using 10 edge-blended projec-tors with wide-angle lenses.

It forms the centrepiece of ‘Voyage atSea’ , a five-room, 20-minute walk-through cinematic experience in whichvisitors are taken on a journey throughfive centuries of Dutch maritime history. All the interactive exhibits feature AV,lighting and network design by local inte-gration firm Rapenburg Plaza.

“Because of the way they had to bemounted and distributed in the room, it was impossible to create an equal phy sical overlap between each of the 10projectors,” explained Jorinde Wiegel of

Rapenburg Plaza. “So the edge-blendingrequired a great deal of tweaking, including some adaptation of the actualcontent itself.”

The movie is played back throughQuickTime ProRes software and is runthrough five dual-motherboard PCs, eachrunning two licenses of Watchout.

The Watchout machines, which are

located in the museum’s central serverroom alongside the content servers,l ight ing control lers and networkswitches, also provide eight tracks ofaudio; these are routed through a Rich-mond SoundMan server to create thesoundtrack for the room’s 12.2-channelsurround-sound system.Stand: 7K170

BarcoThe OLS 3D LED video wall fromBarco is claimed to be a flexible,space-saving and cost-effectivecombination of its OL series withactive 3D stereo technology. It isdesigned for the control room andsimulation markets.

“It was a logical choice to build onthe proven benefits of the OL series,”said Peter Baumgärtner, Barco’s prod-

uct manager for video walls. “Thisrange uses the latest LED rear-projec-tion technology to optimise imagequality, while Sense6 auto-calibrationguarantees colour and brightness uni-formity over the entire wall. Plus, itsunique liquid cooling system ensuresmore than five years of worry-freeoperation in 24/7 mode. A wide rangeof additional innovative features –including LED redundancy and fullymotorised adjustments – minimise

installation and maintenance efforts.”The wall should consume 30% lesselectricity thanks to smart power man-agement, says the manufacturer.

“For control rooms, the ease ofswitching between mono andstereo mode allows the 3D to beintegrated into existing video wallapplications,” said Baumgärtner. “Itis even possible to share mono andstereo mode in the same displayarea, making the OLS a great solu-tion for video walls with an occa-sional need to show 3D. In thesimulation market, OLS is a flexi-ble, space-saving and cost-effectivealternative to existing high-endmulti-projector solutions.”

The product offers 1920x1080resolution, with active shutterglasses, synchronised by an IR emit-ter, producing colour-neutral imag-ing and no ghosting, says Barco.

The OLS modules have a nar-row footprint (less than 450mmfor the 50in version – there is alsoa 70in). A front-access version, theOLSF, reduces the space neededeven further. Stand: 11H65

Vox PopWe ask: Why does ISE continue to flourish when other industryshows are growing in single figures or flat-lining?

Specialistshows aregoing to goone way oranother. Goodones will hit acritical massand will be relative to the marketand it is self evident that ISE hasachieved this. Mike Blackmanreally does a good job and leads avery enthusiastic team. ISEare clever enough to employ goodpeople and good marketeers. Theteam is always looking for newmarkets and innovations to bringnew countries in and to addressnew audiences and markets suchas architects, education, visitorsattractions and even oil and gas.

InfoComm is involved indelivering the educationalprogrammes at ISE, which showsleadership in the scale andbreadth of the education offered. Our education team have built thisup over the years, which brings inmore and more courses andattendees each year.

For me a trade show is notabout buying and selling, it’s moreabout empowering and educatingthe audience. In our industry, thepace of change is so dramatic. Atthe moment, we are seeing strongindustry trends towards IT and AVintegration.Greg Jeffreys, president, InfoComm International

ISE is acompletelyunique tradeshow in that itcombines allsegments ofthe pro AV andcommercialmarkets withthe residential AV market, creatingone single powerful sales andshowcase event. Many of our keyUK, European, Russian andMiddle East customers and all ofour distributors attend this show, which makes our investment inthe show extremely profitable interms of the measured RoI. On topof this, and in spite of thecontinuing uncertainty that hangsover the larger global economy, spending on technology, and AV inparticular, shows solid signs ofcontinuing, and this speaks wellfor the future of ISE.Paul Starkey, president, Elan Home Systems

ISE has proven itself to be at thepinnacle of the AV industry and I

believe itreachedcritical mass afew years ago.The showattracts morevisitors andexhibitors thanany other andis considered to be the place to beas a serious AV company. Thelocation of Amsterdam is attractiveand easy to travel to.Anders Løkke, marketing director, projectiondesign

ISE offersvisitors theopportunity toseemanufacturersfrom everyaspect of theaudiovisualsector. Othershows only offer exposure to asub-set of the market and with thedemand on visitors’ time to deliverresults for their companies in avery difficult economic climate, visitors need to decide whichshows to attend and ISE is by farthe best use of time.Jason Creminds, CEO,signagelive

We, as acompany, believe thatISE hasretained a highstandard oforganisation, attracting allseriouscompanies oldand new as exhibitors, givingthem an opportunity to show whatthey offer. The rapid technologicaldevelopments of the market havetheir chance to be communicatedat ISE to a very big audience. Also,if someone wants to keep up withthis rapidly developing market, hedefinitely wants to visit ISE. Cleopatra Argiriou, exportscontroller, Unitech Systems

In my opinion, the ISE showhasrepresented accurately thestream of convergencebetween AVand IT, alongwith the changes that werecoming at the same time.Mariano Arranz, president and CEO,Tecco

In a significant improve-ment to the company’s tabtensioned motorised pro-ject ion screens, everyDraper tab tensionedscreen surface – includingthe tabs – is now CNC cutas a single piece.

The tabs are thenfolded and RF welded. Theresult of the changes, saysDraper, is a much strongertab with no possibility ofseparation.

With the revisedapproach comes anupgraded warranty. Drapernow warrants all its tabtensioned screens againsttab separation for f ive

years from date of manufacture.

“Making a tab ten-s ioned sur face in thismanner eliminates thepuckering that has charac-terised the edges of tabtensioned screens madeby Draper and other man-ufacturers for years,”remarked John Pidgeon,Draper president, in a let-ter announcing theimprovement to Draperdealers. “Prior to makingthis decision, we cycled atab tensioned screenmade in this manner over30,000 times with no tabfailure.” Stand: 1M22

Vox PopWe ask: What are the hottest trends in digital signage at the moment?

Interactivetechnologiesare redefiningdigital signage;creating anenvironmentwhere peopleare able to interact with theinformation around them isbecoming paramount.

Use the right technology andsignage can be so much morethan a digital poster. Imagine aconsumer picking up an item froma shelf, triggering instant on-screen product information andproduct comparisons – all this isnow possible but the market isonly just realising it.

The latest edition of ourInspired XPert platform, the IS-XPT-2000, has capabilities that gobeyond conventional digitalsignage by giving users the abilityto orchestrate these messageswith lighting, audio and othertriggered events through AMXNetLinx control. The manufacturer is now able toproduce customised TFTs in specialaspect ratios. These can be stretchedor very wide TFTs, which can beused in a range of applicationswhere standard sizes are not suitable.

These TFTs can be used in sta-tionary or mobile applications, indoor or outdoor. AEG MIS says itoffers both complete displays andsoftware solutions, as well as OEMassemblies for companies to adaptthe product to their own individualrequirements.

The company says that i tsstretched TFTs expand the range ofdisplay options available to manyusers in passenger transport appli-cations as well as commercialapplications.

Because displays are beingincreasingly used for many applica-tions due to their versatility andability to incorporate HD as well asgraphics and video images inmulti-media presentations, AEGMIS is now accommodating specialinstallations in confined spaces, which are designed to be visuallyattractive and eye-catching.

The latest 360°video display fromDynaScan Technol-ogy offers theequivalent area of a120in LCD screen. The DS0816 meas-ures about 2.75mtall and 1m indiameter, and out-puts a bright 750cd/m image. It hasbeen designed forindoor applicationswith high foot traffic. An optionallightbox base is available to providegreater visibility through the use ofbacklit posters.

The addition of the DS0816expands DynaScan’s 360º prod-uct range to nine different pro-duction displays. “Many of ourcustomers have shown a greatinterest in larger indoor video dis-plays while maintaining a smallfootprint. We believe the DS0816will fit this need very well,” saidDavid Huang, DynaScan’s direc-tor of business development.

The DS0816 uses the company’s

patented spinning LED technologyfor greater image quality. It uses adrum with several red, green andblue LED modules. As it spins, thesystem controls the lighting of eachpixel at a precise location within1/100th degree accuracy. The effectresults in a high-resolution, brightimage that is claimed to have apixel pitch far smaller than otherLED display on the market.

Tinopolis Group, the UK’s largestindependent media group, used themanufacturer’s Universal Videohub288 to broadcast the 2011 RugbyWorld Cup, held in New Zealand, across Wales. Tinopolis Group alsoincorporated a wide range of Black-magic Design’s OpenGear Convert-ers and Mini Converters to supportits HD infrastructure used in broad-casting the games.

Tinopolis Group companySunset & Vine Cymru won the ten-der to provide Rugby World Cupprogramming for the S4C Net-work, and worked in New Zealandfor the duration of the tourna-ment, sending all matches andrugby related programmes back toWales via satellite and optical fibre.Live programming and highlightswere then produced at the Tinopo-lis studios and headquarters inLlanelli, Wales.

The Universal Video-hub was used to route allincoming HD satellitefeeds from New Zealandinto record playbackservers and edit suites, aswell as routing all studiosources into a visionmixer located in the com-pany’s production suite.

“We used an iPad tocontrol t he previous

Harston said he wanted toinstall a system that would copewith 3G, to ensure the company’ssystem would be future proof, andthat the Universal Videohub wasthe perfect solution.

When the Lombardy region of Italymoved all its offices to the PalazzoLombardia, the new headquartersof the regional government ofLombardia, it chose to equip the38 meeting rooms of the Palazzowith three Taiden HCS-5300 Seriesd i g i t a linfrared wire-less confer-ence systems, giving a totalof more than400 HCS-5300 seriescontributionunits. Theregional gov-ernment is said to be consideringthe adoption of a Taiden digital IRwireless conference system for thesecond phase of the project.

With advantages like easy set-upand removal, convenient operationand maintenance, neatness andelegance, and no impact on thebuilding structure, wireless confer-ence systems became the firstchoice for the project Palazzo Lom-bardia. However, as meeting roomsare quite close to each other and, given the high probability thatconference systems may all operateat the same time, wireless confer-ence systems based on RF technol-

ogy (including WL AN) werebelieved to be inappropriate andinfrared transmission technologybecame the preferred solution forthe wireless conference systems. This is because IR systems do notinterfere with each other. Beyond

this, infraredtransmissionavoids eaves-d r o p p i n gb e c a u s ei n f r a r e dtransmissiondoes not gen-erate electro-m a g n e t i cr a d i a t i o n

Moreover, the sound quality ofIR wireless conference systemsbased on analogue audio transmis-sion technology was apparentlydeemed to be unsatisfactory.Taiden says that its digital IR wire-less conference system merges theadvantages of both digital process-ing and wireless infrared transmis-sion – meaning that the TaidenHCS-5300 series turned out to bethe solution for Regione Lombar-dia’s Palazzo Lombardia project.Stand: 3C115

unified communications

Not long ago, the AVmanager of a majormultinationalorganisation was heard

to say that, if he never heard aboutunified communications everagain, it would be too soon. Hewas, of course, joking – but, as withall the best jokes, his remark had aserious point: everyone is talkingabout unified communications.

While there are many entirelyvalid definitions of unifiedcommunications, David Willie –who is business manager forunified communications atintegrator Saville – has adefinition that is bothrepresentative and succinct.

“Most consider unifiedcommunications to encompasstechnologies including presence, chat, voice, desktopvideoconferencing, room-basedvideoconferencing andtelepresence,” he says. “Whatmakes each of these technologiesunified is the ability to connectand/or to communicate from any

to any. Importantly, this needs tobe within organisations andbetween organisations.”

“Typical elements mightinclude anything fromtelepresence, telephony systems,PCs, laptops, smartphones, digitalsignage, recording and broadcastsystems,” adds Roland Dreesden, managing director of integratorReflex. “It’s not just about thehardware elements, though, butalso the systems that bringeverything together – virtualisedbridging, live streaming, learningmanagement systems and so on.”

“Most forward looking thinkersunderstand that the unifiedcommunication application hasvalue, and makes informationworkers more productive,” saysAndrew W Davis, a co-founder ofWainhouse Research, the companybehind the Collaboration Summitthat coincides with ISE. “Theconcept is to make decision makingmore streamlined while allowingmore people to have inputs. Unifiedcommunications should allow

workers to find the right resourcesto resolve issues in faster time. Fasterdecisions and better decisions arewhere the benefits will come from.”

It is, then, a very differentconcept from videoconferencing:where videoconferencing hashistorically been an ‘islandapplication’, unifiedcommunications, implementedappropriately, can be – shouldbe – integral to the way anorganisation works. As such, deploying it is likely to involvecomplexity – something which AVintegrators may find off-putting.

According to Willie, they neednot be alarmed. “It simplyrequires a new understanding andappreciation that thesetechnologies are different and arenot as scary as they first look,” hesuggests. “It’s simply a case ofdeploying the correct productsalongside the correct professionalcapabilities and services to delivera different type of solution. AVintegrators have always embracednew technologies and although

the skill sets are different, theysimply need to build internalprofessional capabilities to deliverthese new solutions.”

Integrators like Saville andReflex have been gearing up toaddress the market for some time.“We believed it was an area ofhuge opportunity for us at theend of 2009 and built a strategyto address it into our three-yearplan,” explains Dreesden.

“Why? The technology is better, people adopt it at home, studentsare encouraged to distant learn, lifestyles improve, productivityincreases, the environmentbenefits, it creates safer workingenvironments. Where do I stop?”he laughs. “The list is huge!”

Davis suggests that there maystill be time for others to equipthemselves to address theopportunity. “I think we are onthe cusp of crossing the chasmand seeing many of the unifiedcommunications trials turn intovolume deployments,” he says.“The market probably won’t hit itsstride till 2013 or 2014, but 2012should be where we see lots ofmajor companies joining thebandwagon as customers.”

And, despite his supposedreluctance, that may well includethe AV manager who neverwanted to hear about unifiedcommunications again.

Ian McMurrayfinds some unresolved technicalissues but considerableincentives for integrators

Presenting its new Central Control Unit(CCU) for its DCN Next Generation andDCN Wireless conferencing systems isBosch Security Systems. The newCCU allows both wired andwireless delegate units to beintegrated into one system. Eachcontrol unit is now capable ofcontrolling up to 245 wired and245 wireless delegate devices.

Bosch says that the CCU has beenenhanced with the addition of severalcost-saving features. The output powerhas been increased to enable it to drivemore delegate units, reducing the needand expense of additional power sup-plies required for larger systems. TheCCU can also be configured as a networkcontroller, eliminating the need for adedicated network controller which istypically required in large multi-CCU

systems ofup to 4,000delegates.

New functionalityhas been added to the DCNWireless Discussion system. Itnow features a voice activation mode, which al lows microphones to beswitched on automatically once delegatesbegin to speak, thus enabling more spon-

taneous and open discussions. Furtherenhancements include the 128-bit AESRijndael encryption for the DCN Wire-less, which gives optimum protectionagainst eavesdropping.

Bosch Security Systems’ new HD cam-era solution, for use with DCN Con-ference solutions, is also on show. Itincludes a purpose-designed HDConference Dome camera with HD-SDI output, which is said to giveclear images without any delays.

According to Bosch, this new solutionmeans installers no longer need go to theeffort and expense of developing theirown interfacing software and of purchas-ing third-party CCTV cameras, as it pro-vides them with a price-competitive,off-the-shelf solution that meets all theircustomers’ HD conferencing needs.Stand: 3B112

The Listen LT-82 is the heart ofa stationary IR listening system. Ittakes the desired audio signal andtransmits the signal via coaxialcable to one or more IR radiator-emitters.

The LT-82 can be operated inmono or stereo on one of four dif-ferent carriers; with up to four LT-82 units connected to provide upto four simultaneous mono orstereo carriers to the radiators. IR audio solutions showingA new installation featuring Ter-acue’s H.264 SD/HD encoders atthe University Hospital Aachen,Germany, allows students locatedin multiple theatres to participatein the same lecture. The technolog-ical upgrade is said to be aresponse to the ‘massive’ recentincrease in student numbers.

The point-to-multipoint broad-cast is made possible by a videodistribution system on an IP net-

As a result, lectures inthe University Hospital Aachen’steaching department can bebrought simultaneously to a maxi-mum of six lecture theatres. Forthis purpose, the lecturer’s laptopand their camera image is trans-mitted onto projection systems inthe individual rooms in split-screen mode.

To facilitate the display of bothSD and HD signals, the university

has been provided with a numberof ENC-300-DVI and ENC-200encoders from Teracue.

Suitable for a variety of videotraining and e-learning purposes, the ENC-300-DVI broadcastsH.264 and MPEG-4 streaming andsupports DVI and HDMI signals(up to 1920x1200 pixels). The sub-sequent conversion of H.264 HDstreams into RTMP Flash is accom-plished using a WOWZA mediaserver.Stand: 1E80

Enterprises have invested heavily inthe latest telepresence technology –which can be impressive when par-ticipants are located at HQ or amajor corporate location.

The company has justannounced R3.0 of its H.264 Dis-tributed Media Engine (DME).R3.0 offers a SIP User Agent thatcan be invited into the video con-ference just like a regular user, according to VBrick. The DMEappears as just another member ofa video conference.

As part of a major HD upgradeproject, Porché Advanced Systemshas equipped Trinity BaptistChurch in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with state-of-the-art Vaddiopan/tilt/zoom camera systems.

“We first encountered Vaddio atInfoComm when we were lookingfor a high-definition video feedfrom the main Worship Center to[contemporary worship area] theCavern,” recalled Jason Ryder ofPorché. “We ended up installing thePanasonic HE-100 PTZ camera andat first that worked really well.”

More recently, in 2010, thecompletion of the high-spec TK’sPlace area raised the notion ofupgrading to HD in the main Wor-ship Center. The latter facility was

ultimately equipped with two 22ft1080p HD projection screens, atrio of Vaddio HD-19 PTZ camerasfor supporting-angled shots, and astudio-quality JVC 1080p mannedcamera. Control is provided by twoVaddio Precision Camera Controllers.

“I’ve had a lot of experiencewith Vaddio in other installations,”explained Ryder. “As far as a roboticPTZ camera goes, nothing beatsinstalling with Cat5 and still gettinga high-quality, high-definitionimage. Price is always a big factorand because these cameras are rea-sonable, we were not only able toget more shots, we could also getthe additional controllers.” Stand: 1F122

One of the mostcompelling trends wesee shaping the future ofdigital connectivity is IP

control. The ability to seamlesslyswitch between multiple sourcesand displays all connected on anetwork is of paramountimportance.

The multi-room, videoanywhere/anytime model hashad a major impact on ourproduct development. Most ofGefen’s hardware include IPcontrol connectivity. This includesthe first product in the industry tobe officially certified by HDBaseT:the HDMI over Cat5 with Ethernetextender, announced in 2009. Ituses just one Cat5 cable to deliver1080p full HD with IR andEthernet up to 100m, sendingEthernet connectivity over the sameCat5 cable as the HDMI signal.

Today, being integrated on thenetwork offers greater possibilitiesfor new business than ever before, particularly the ability to monitorand maintain the entire system

remotely using any Web-enabledinterface with access to thenetwork. In anticipation of thistype of connectivity, and the needfor an inherent managementsolution for all hardwareconnected on the network, Gefenis showcasing its PACS(Professional AutomationControl System) at ISE. Thisprovides access to all keyfunctions in the installation, through RS-232, IR or IP control.

Users can select sources, control volume, distributeaudio/video and more from anybrowser on the network, deliveringaccess 24/7. We feel that ISE is thebest venue to showcase these typesof innovations. This is whereintegrators from around the worldconverge to find the most cutting-edge solutions to their challenges. We see this as an exciting time.Rapid evolutions presentopportunity as much as challenge, and we can’t wait to unveil what isin the works for AV integrators in2012. Four switchers launch today. TheSE-600 is a low-cost eight-input SDswitcher, also available in hand-carry format as the HS-600; the SE-2800 HD/SD switcher has 12inputs with 4:2:2 10-bit broadcastquality and is small enough formobile or OB use; while the flag-ship SE-3000 has 3D DVEs, high-quality multi-screen multi-viewoutput, chromakey, dual PIP, and afull size control panel keyboard aswell as a PC control interface.

The user-friendly HS-600 andSE-600 are packaged to be highlymobile, making them useful forevent AV teams or productions onthe run, says the manufacturer. Pro-ductions can go live within a fewminutes. They are based aroundcomposite inputs to allow producers

to use legacy acquisition equipment, thereby reducing costs.

Both switchers offer HD support, ergonomic surfaces, intuitive inter-faces, a high number of inputs, andhigh-quality output.

The SE-2800 provides all theessentials forprofessional HD

vision mixing: flexiblemulti-screen support, wipes, picturein picture and on-screen clock. TheSE-3000 adds further functions, with four keyers, 40 wipe patterns,

with variable border width, colourand softness, chromakey support, abuilt-in DVE transition engine with88 transitions and two still stores.

“Datavideo has extended itsrange to provide producers at everylevel of the industry with a toolideal for their programme making,”said Rob Op de Beek, managingdirector of Datavideo Technologies

Europe. “We have been manu-facturing switchers for years and

work hard to understand whatprofessional users really need.

“Datavideo does not believe ina ‘one-size-fits-all solution’, withunnecessarily complex features,”Op de Beek said. “Our philosophyis to develop high performing, attractively priced systems thatclosely match a particular pro-ducer’s requirements.” Stand: 11C84

A s a long-timecontributor to IEResidential (producedby ISE Daily publisher

Intent Media), I’ve been well-positioned to track the rapid riseto prominence of the iPad in CIcircles. And prominent itcertainly has become – indeed, such is its status these days thatI’ve taken to guessing the numberof minutes into any giveninterview that the first referencewill occur...

Strictly speaking, I should becounting allusions to ‘tablets’, but

the ubiquity of the iPad in thismarket means that the two termsare – for now at least –interchangeable.

In the fashion of a BBCpresenter confronted with anunwelcome reference to a specificbrand, it behoves me to point outthat ‘other tablets are available’.But while several recentinterviewees have expressedpositive expectations about oneparticular rival platform – StudioLGL’s Laura Lazzerini suggeststhat “the Android platform willregister an increase” – the jury hasyet to return a verdict regardingthe overall prospects for non-iOS-based devices in CI.

If the iPad’s popularity is agiven, though, what about itscapabilities? Explaining thefindings of Frost & Sullivan’sEmerging Home AutomationMarkets report to me in 2011,research analyst HammamAhmed confirmed the generalsuspicion that, as the tabletboom continues, “sales of high-

end touchscreen user interfaceswill decline dramatically”.

There was, however, animportant caveat: “In eachinstallation, there will still be atleast one typical [dedicated] userinterface. What the iPad will dois replace the user interfaces thatare sold in addition to the typicaluser interface.”

The absence of certainconnectivity options that onemight expect from a dedicatedcontroller is a crucial limitation. But so, too, is the tablet’smultipurpose nature: attractivelyportable, it is open to being used, misused or mislaid by variousmembers of any one household.

For Steve Moore from systemsintegrator SMC, the primarydrawback revolves around thedifficulty of “ensuring that thetablet boots up and lives in theapplication that provides control. With most apps out there, theenvironment is such that the appscan only run one at a time.” SMCmajors on whole-house

integrations, and as such the ‘shinynew toy’ tablets are largelyrestricted to ‘auxiliary’ statusalongside one or more dedicatedcontrollers.

Will it be ever thus? Moore, for one, can envisage a day whenthe tablet is able to assumeprimary control function forlower-value projects: “When thereis more IP control and morecontent mediated through theCloud, it will absolutely happen.”In the shorter-term, he says, expect some of the tablets’ designaesthetic and gesture control toinform the creation of new CI-oriented systems.

Increased diversificationsuggests that many of CI’s big-name manufacturers have alreadyaccepted that their businessmodels will have to evolve. Butwhile the tablet revolutionheralds very real challenges, itdoes not yet threaten to fullyoverturn the old order of whichthe dedicated home controller isthe accepted monarch.

The absence ofconnectivity optionsthat one mightexpect from adedicated controlleris a limitation. But…

Three products from GreensoundTechnology’s new range of glassspeakers, where glass is used as thevibrating surface that creates thesound. are on display today.

The manufacturer claims thatthe radically different designapproach delivers a superior har-monic and high-fidelity soundcompared with traditional tweeter-and-cone-driver enclosures througha combination of specially engi-neered glass and a base structure.

The Serac speaker with Bravurasubwoofer is Greensound’s top-end glass speaker product. TheSerac stands at 1.66m high, weighs112kg, and is available in a stereoor 4.1 surround sets.

The Orbis speaker with Circasubwoofer is the nextmodel down, andis a more compactdesign, but sti l lwith top-qualityperformance inmind, albeit forsmaller envi-r o n m e n t s .The Lunospeaker with Cube sub-woofer is the smallest of thethree systems, yet still stands over

1m high and weighs 36kg. Greensound says all three sys-

tems provide a consistent listeningperformance, no matter where inthe room the listener is positionedrelative to the speaker. The manu-facturer also insists that they guar-antee a sophisticated level ofperformance, as the componentswill not break down over time; andbecause this technology employssound projection through glass, each speaker is able to deliver true360° sound.

Not content with throwingmost of the electro-acoustic rule-book out of the window, Green-sound has also designed its speakersystems so that they can be usedwirelessly if desired. The supplied

transmitter is simplyplugged into anyamplifier’s speakeroutput. At thispoint, the power ofthe amplifierbecomes irrelevant

because the sig-nal is trans-mitted to the

speaker’s internaldigital amplifier.

The availability ofinexpensive iOS, Windows,

From aconsumer’s viewpoint, they want easy access to any movie or songat any time – all at an affordable price.Manufacturers must offer products thatallow control from these familiar touchdevices and use advanced, IP-based AVdistribution technologies to provide cost-effective whole-house AV distributionsolutions. Without question, the hottest trend inresidential technology is the move tointegrate homeentertainment andcontrol in the same wayconsumers havealready integratedcontrol of their mobilelifestyle with theirsmartphones, iPads, and tablets. This is atrend that will defy theuncertainties of the global economybecause it is increasingly being perceivedby the consumer as a ‘necessity’ at thesame time that advances in technology aremaking system solutions more affordableand deployable than ever before. Wirelesstechnology is taking these trends further.Paul Starkey, president, Elan HomeSystems

Vox PopWe ask: What are the hottest trends inresidential technology at the moment?

The world is unpluggingitself, and I do not meanthat it is shutting off itselectronics or turning

away from technology. Instead, Imean that everyone wantseverything to be faster and moreportable, easier and more flexiblethan ever before. As such, newwireless innovations, andimprovements on existingwireless solutions, are the ‘now’and the foreseeable ‘future’ of thisindustry.

Heading into ISE is again anexciting time for all the players inthe custom electronics realm. Theopportunity to witness andengage with the hottest and mostrecent solutions is alwaysvaluable, but the advent of morewidespread and higher-performance wireless optionsmakes this year’s event particularlybeneficial. This is a chance toinvestigate the variety of new andupcoming technologies that truly

make leading a tech-life, andliving in a tech-home, easier andmore affordable than ever. Andthe result? More customers.Happier customers.

Moving forward, with all theconvenience wireless allows, thekey is to seek out the systems andcomponents that provide thatsimplicity and user-friendlinesswithout sacrificing quality, fidelityor variety. Innovations thatintegrate the latest protocols andmost advanced, cutting-edgecomponents make a hugedifference between a wireless AVsolution and a high-fidelity, high-performance wireless AV solution.Pushing to deliver faster and moreportable, easier and more flexiblesolutions, while also promisingan overall better experience, is thekey going forward, for bothmanufacturers and distributors.

It is what our customers want, expect, and honestly, deserve.Stand: 1P122

When a customer islooking for a roll-down projectionscreen with the

flattest viewing surface possible, screen manufacturers havetraditionally recommendedscreens with a tab-tensioningsystem. On a motorised or crank-operated screen, a vinyl materialis stretched as the screendescends, pulling the surface flat.

While this offers a flat viewingsurface, the manner in whichscreens have been made byseveral manufacturers has also ledto issues like puckering, andsometimes to separation as well.

After hearing from ourcustomers about this issue, wehave developed a significantimprovement in tab-tensionedmotorised projection screens, which we are demonstratingthroughout ISE 2012.

Every Draper tab tensionedscreen surface (including thetabs) is now CNC cut as a singlepiece, and the tabs are thenfolded and RF welded. The resultis a much stronger tab with nopossibility of separation.

This approach eliminatespuckering that has characterisedthe edges of tab-tensioned screens

made by several manufacturers.Jentry Wittkamper, Draper’sexport sales manager, tells me ournew system has dramaticallyreduced the issue of indentationmarks on the screen border.

Of course the main forcebehind our upgrade wasimproving durability. So, prior tomaking this decision, we cycled atab-tensioned screen made in thismanner over 30,000 times withno tab failure. We were soimpressed by the performance,we decided to warranty all ourtab-tensioned screens against tabseparation for five years fromdate of manufacture.

What really matters is howcustomers view the changes. BrianCassley, our regional salesmanager for Europe, reports thathis customers like the updatedappearance of the new tensioningsystem; overall flatness isimproved and the tensioning isattractive to look at. Stand: 1M22

AMX says it believes that an unprece-dented level of control capability canbe realised around its core technol-ogy, and at the heart of thisapproach is the company’s newlyexpanded Enova range.

Additions to the Enova familyinclude the Enova DGX 16 and 32digital media switchers, which themanufacturer says are the industry’sfirst modular digital media switcherswith a built-in central controller.

The company says its DGX 16and 32 models are designed tocope with copy protection issues, centrally manage connecteddevices, and overcome many of the

challenges facing integrators today. Both models manage and dis-

tribute analogue and digital audioand video including HDMI withHDCP (HDMI/HDCP) control andEthernet without any of the typicalproblems associated with HDCPauthenticated content distributionand switching, says AMX.

The Enova DGX 16 is describedas ideal for commercial or residentialinstallations requiring the highestquality video to be shared between16 local or remote AV sources anddestinations. The 4RU form factorallows for installation in locationswhere space is limited and included

redundant power supplies providefor constant uptime for mission crit-ical applications, adds AMX.

Also new is the Enova DVX-3150HD; an all-in-one controller,AV switcher, scaler, analogue todigital signal converter, twistedpair transmitter and amplifier withbuilt-in professional grade audioprocessing.

AMX says the DVX-3150HD isthe only all-in-one presentationswitcher that seamlessly handlesboth analogue and digital AV –making HDCP as easy to work withas analogue – and delivers perfectvideo and audio, in a single 3U box.Designed to meet the needs of con-ference rooms, classrooms and audi-toriums, the manufacturer claimsthat the DVX-3150HD is poised tochange the future of AV room solu-tions. Developed and engineered like anIT platform, rather than an AV sys-tem, Crestron’s MC3 3-Series con-trol system is powered by the Core3 OS. The 3-Series platform hasbeen designed to provide a founda-tion for powerful integrated build-ing technology and advancedhome control.

The MC3 is said to combinethe agility and speed of a com-puter operating system with thereliability of a network appli-ance, enabling real-time multi-tasking to seamlessly run up to10 independent programssimultaneously, all communicat-ing with each other on the sameplatform. A fully integrated 3-Series platform facilitates moreprocessing power, faster speeds, more memory, enhanced securityand multitasking capabilitiesdesigned to simplify the designand implementation of integratedbuilding management and hometechnology.

When performing upgrades toany single part of the control sys-tem, it is no longer necessary totake down and update the entiresystem. Because each module ispartitioned, a restart or upload of

one program does not affect theothers – resulting in less program-ming and no downtime.

Upgrades can now be per-formed on any individual sub-system, for example AV, lighting, climate control and security sys-tems, while allowing the other pro-grams to run seamlessly in thebackground.

“As an industry, wehave to start thinking about AV asinfrastructure, rather than as astand-alone entity,” said Crestron’sRobin van Meeuwen. “The decision-makers are no longer thetraditional AV manager; they’re ITmanagers, facilities managers, architects, real estate developersand builders. Communication infrastructure ispermanently on: to save travelmiles by air or by car, to bringdecision makers together, toconnect project groups, to connectknowledge carriers over time zonesor even city zones, your devices andinfrastructure have to be alwaysavailable. Fortunately, the energyused in a building is not subject tothe same demands.

With oil, gas and electricityprices going through the roof, theeconomic argument for energyefficiency is stronger than ever, but are management solutionskeeping pace to enable evengreater levels of control, and ofenergy efficiency?

“While AV solutions provide alarge variety of data and statisticsthere is no out-of-the-boxmanagement tool whichtranslates video calls, voice calls, collaboration sessions into savedtons of carbon emissions and losttime,” observes Dekom CEO JörgWeisflog. “Saving energy, timeand carbon emissions are veryimportant rules and aims,” hequalifies. “Any company that doesnot see this is not leading itssector anymore.”

While there are no magic fuelgauges on Unified Communicationssystems to show energy saved, there is a solution to analysing theefficiency of a building, in theform of SBT (Smart BuildingTechnologies).

“SBT is IP connectivity thatprovides data from all thesesystems to one central place to beanalysed and used to make thebuilding perform better –automatically,” explains AllenWeidman, sustainability officerfor InfoComm International, andexecutive director of the STEPFoundation. “Data analyticsshows trends, exceptions, equipment faults, enhancementopportunities operations, andinformation to justify investmentsin energy-saving measures.”

The world of AV control andmanagement has begun crossingover into building energymanagement. AV systemintegrators already bring togethermultiple components to onecentral location and interface.Adding IT, HVAC, telepresenceand so on is simply connectinganother set of low-voltage wiresto the dashboard.

“More importantly, given thatAV deals in the qualities of sound, motion and light on a daily basis, the AV industry has the opportunityto ‘humanise’ the smart building byproviding each occupant withinformation about their impact onthe building’s operation,” saysWeidman. “This not only includesdigital signs in the lobby showingpeak energy use for the month, butenergy use by the hour, for the dayand year, and historical trends – wehave the capability of putting thatinformation on everyone’scomputer and smartphone.”

According to Weisflog:“Intelligent and clever AVintegration makes daily work, support and therefore life easier. To cross into building energymanagement will take more time.I don’t see energy consumptiondata and its management in a lotof professional and evenconsumer devices.”

For sustainable best practices forthe AV industry, look to the STEPRating System and Guide(www.thestepfoundation.org). Itscentral message is that energyefficiency is only one part of asustainable AV system.

Greeninitiatives arebecoming aconcern inmanyindustries, including digitalsignage. Since the creation of Innesin 2005, the demand for greensolutions has increased. Innesaddresses three kinds of markets:point of sale, transportation andinstitutional. The latter isincreasingly concerned by greensolutions. Indeed, many businessesand public services have ecologicalcharters and are engaged ininitiatives to reduce paper signage. At the same level, schools anduniversities are promotingsustainable development.Innes’ goal is to respond tocustomers’ requirements byoffering lower-power consumptionplayers which ensure betterdurability and efficiency withoutrestricting functionality.Franck Dupin, CEO andfounder, Innes

We have discovered a strongdemand for green solutions in therefurbishing orelectrification ofnew buildings. The traditionalway ofdistributingpower and datathrough aspace to the

work places required a lot ofcabling; this means a lot of copper,PVC, waste, high fire loads andcosts. We propose theDecentralised Electric Distributionapproach, which can save up to40% of the mentioned costs, materials and fire loads.Siegfried Schulte, founder, owner and main designer,Schulte Elektrotechnik

In the installation market, we areseeing a great deal of demand forenergy-efficientproducts –especially inthe field ofamplificationfrom local-authority andother publiclyfundedapplications. Here, we see ademand for greater efficiencythat’s driven both from agovernment target dictat (lowercarbon footprint, etc), as well aspressure on lower lifetime cost-of-ownership in procurement. Thisaffects not only the constructionsector but also fit-out, includinginstalled AV. Jon Alkhagen, managing director, Lab.gruppen

Commerciallightingcontrols haveto be one ofthe biggestgrowthsectors for us.With moregovernmentsoffering incentives to businessesthat reduce their carbon footprint, incorporated with the cost ofenergy continually increasing, it’san attractive solution forbusinesses of all sizes. It seems that more and morerival digital AV formats areintroduced, all claiming to be thelatest and greatest, supportingrich feature lists and huge imageresolutions. However, the vastnumber of formats and revisionsmake it hard to build a stable, ready for all, AV system. In thissession we will go over thevarious formats, the differencebetween them and give someadvice on how to integrate them.

The C3-340 Series CorioMatrix ismaking its ISE debut, offering whatTV One describes as an industryfirst firmware-based video routing, switching and video conversionplatform.

Sixteen AV universal moduleslots are available and the Cori-oMatrix automatically recognisesthe modules inserted as an inputor output module.

There are no dedicated input oroutput slots when using 2-channelDVI-U or 3G-SDI modules. It canbe configured with up to 64x64input/output 3G-SDI/DVI-U con-nection combinations.

This flexibility, according to TVOne, allows end-user configura-tions to be based on their ownneeds, instead of the router forcinga certain setup and limited config-uration. Additional DVI-U or 3G-SDI modules can be added later inopen slots without having to re-setthe router. All AV modules are hot

swappable and recog-nised for immediateauto configuration.

The CorioMatrixalso provides up-, down- and cross-conversion between a variety ofanalogue and digital video formatsthru 3G-SDI. The modules selecteddetermine what format will beaccommodated and the matrixsize. Signal parameters of theincoming video may be adjusted. All settings are stored in non-volatile memory and are retainedeven when power is switched off.User-defined presets are also avail-able to customise settings for vari-ous applications.

All the functions can be con-trolled with serial connection viaRS-232/422/485, USB or IP. Win-dows software is provided. A frontpanel LCD option is said to makedirect setup easy, and third-partycontrollers permit a choice of con-trol options. The unit is housed in astandard 4RU case and features anoptional redundant hot swappableinternal PSU and power inlet.Stand: 3C106

Vox PopWe ask: Why does ISE continue to flourish when other industryshows are growing in single figures or flat-lining?

The ISE showreflects thelarger trendsthat areshaping thefuture of ourindustry. Themove towards integrated eventsthat meet multiple market needs, which is what ISE effectively does, helps all segments of the AVindustry to connect and conductbusiness at a single event. Itallows for manufacturers, dealersand distributors to make efficientuse of their time and resources. This show is symbolic of the sametrend that is reshaping the futureof the manufacturers who servethese markets. Increasingly, thefuture belongs to those companieswho can best marshall theircapabilities to provide R&D,resources, multiple andcomplementary product offerings, and a solid business basis forpartnership with distributors anddealers. The era of the boutiquesolutions provider is fading; thebiggest among us will survivethese economically uncertaintimes and grow in the years tocome. Smaller companies, manywith very compelling technologies, will be consolidated within largercompanies who will enhance thevalue of product offerings.Johannes G Rietschel, CEO andfounder, Barix

Pulling a geographically diversecollection of exhibitors andattendees, ISE stands out as ashow that merges the needs, wants, and ideas of a variety ofcultures and markets.

Appealing to such a widearray of interests, and

highlightingthe best ofwhat differentregions andchannels haveto offer, thisshow isconsistentlyripe withincredible opportunity. That’s whyit keeps people coming, andkeeps growing. David Rodarte, president andCEO, NuVo Technologies
