1. It’s the largest AV tradeshow

ever held in Europe

Over 50,000 people from 150

countries are expected to come to

the Amsterdam RAI between 10

and 12 February, when in excess

of 36,000sqm of net floor space

will be taken by more than 1,000

companies, which are launching

a plethora of new products.

Whatever aspect of audiovisual

or electronic systems integration

you’re interested in, you won’t find

a better selection of it anywhere

else in Europe.

2. Dedicated themed areas

As in previous years, there will

be particular emphasis on four

key technology areas: Digital

Signage, Residential Solutions,

Unified Communications and Smart

Building. If you work in any of

these areas, you’ll find all the key

companies you need to talk to in

one place.

3. Get a view of the future

If you’d like to find out about the

major changes ahead over the

next ten years in AV and electronic

systems, come to ISE’s Opening

Keynote on 9 February, the day

before the show. This will be given,

by Lars Thomsen, a respected and

influential futurist and international

speaker whose consultancy

Future Matters has advised 40%

of companies on the German

stock exchange on their strategic

planning. Thomsen specialises in

identifying disruptive opportunities,

or ‘tipping points’, that cause

significant shifts in economic,

political and social trends. His

presentation, entitled ‘520 Weeks

5.Grasp the potential of

smart building

Smart building technology

represents a major opportunity for

the AV industry, but capitalising on

this requires an understanding of

how other parts of the construction

industry approach the subject.

The Smart Building Conference –

which returns to ISE for its third

Amsterdam edition – provides

a forum for learning about the

latest smart technologies and a

networking opportunity for the

wider smart building community.

On this occasion, the conference

has two key themes: smart lighting

control and the Internet of Things.

6. Learn on the showfloor

You don’t even have to leave

the exhibition floor to boost

their knowledge of key industry

topics. The ISE Showfloor

Theatres, which offer case study-

based presentations, return

in an expanded format: this

year there are three theatres,

covering Residential Solutions,

Commercial Solutions and Unified

Communications. All three theatres

have been given striking, distinctive

designs that allow the technology

to shine without dominating the

proceedings.

7. Discover new companies

Returning to ISE for a second

year is the Discovery Zone, which

provides a dedicated showcase

for companies that are new to

the show. Here you can simply

and quickly find new ideas, new

products and new solutions from

companies that you won’t have

seen before at the show.

8. Specialist conferences to attend

The second annual SVG Europe

Sport Facility Integration Summit

enables all stakeholders engaged

in venue technology projects to

find out more about everyone’s

roles and responsibilities. This

free-to-attend conference offers

a far-reaching programme that

addresses every aspect of sports

venue integration.

If your company is looking for

capital investment, or you just

want to find out more about the

AV industry from a financing

perspective, don’t miss the Capital

Summit, which has been created

to bring together investors and

companies with growth plans.

9. Learn more about audio tools

Another free conference returning

to ISE is AudioForum, on 9

February – ahead of the exhibition.

Organised by media partner

Connessioni, this edition of the

conference will look at the digital

tools that audio designers and

systems integrators can use in

the creation of audio systems,

installations, speakers and

components. Seminars will be

held by representatives of the

largest companies in the sector

and by experts from the most

important associations in the

market, including AES, the Audio

Engineering Society.

10. And relax…

Extra areas have been created to

give you a chance to relax during

the show. There are additional

catering areas in the Park Foyer

and Ruby Lounge, while the

Business Lounge – located on

the fly-over between Halls 7 and

8 – will be back, offering WiFi

access, charging stations, and

the opportunity to take a much-

needed break in comfortable

seating. The lounge will be

an informal yet professional

environment where you can take

The keynote address at ISE has

always been a highlight, invariably

playing to a packed house – and

ISE 2015 looks as if it will be no

different. Lars Thomsen, one of

Europe’s most influential futurist

business masterminds, will be

talking about, among other things,

tipping points as they apply to the

electronic systems industry.

But what, in Thomsen’s mind, is a

‘tipping point’?

He provides a very simple

example.

“You heat some oil in a pan, and

add some popcorn kernels. The

question is: when will they pop? You

can guess – or alternatively, you can

seek out information about it,” he

says. “A futurist will tell you that the

tipping point for popcorn is 180°C.”

In other words: it’s about making

an educated estimate of the point

at which a visible trend will cause

a significant – disruptive, perhaps

– change in the way things are.

A tipping point is, according to

Thomsen, the point in time when

a new paradigm comes into being.

When a technology becomes

sufficiently inexpensive that

mass adoption becomes possible,

for example – it’s reached a

tipping point.

IT’S NOT MAGICThomsen is clear that there is

nothing mystical or magical about

being a futurist. “You start,” he

smiles, “by having the curiosity

of a five-year old – you love

finding out about things. But then,

predicting the future is about

data and information and applied

knowledge.”

“Add to that some logic, some

insight and some imagination –

and it’s really not hard to do,” he

continues, modestly. “It’s not about

magic or crystal balls.”

For Thomsen, one of the most

significant tipping points of the past

few years has been the advent of

truly smart technologies with inbuilt

intelligence and learning capability.

“We used to have to deal with

dumb, stupid technology,” he says.

“We had to read the manual in

order to adapt ourselves to the

technology. Now, the technology

adapts to us. We’re moving

quickly from dumb technology to

smart technology.”

Another relates to how we

use energy.

“We’re not far off the point where

renewable energy and batteries will

be cost-effective in their own right,

with no need for subsidies to make

renewables attractive,” he believes.

“When renewable energy becomes

less costly than fossil fuels, we’ll

have reached an important tipping

point. It’s not far away.” Thomsen

spends much of his time consulting

with major utility companies about

the impact of such a shift.

Thomsen notes that, today,

just about 1% of all cars sold in

the United States are electric.

It’s a niche market, but it is the

fastest growing market segment.

“When that number becomes 5%,

manufacturers and dealers will

be unable to ignore the trend, and

will be forced to develop and stock

electric cars,” he claims. “They

can’t afford to only serve 95%

of the market. At that juncture,

electric cars will have reached a

tipping point.”

NO GUARANTEEHe is clear, though, that merely

extrapolating trend data is no

guarantee of success in predicting

what’s to come.

“Never underestimate,” he

smiles, “the power of innovation. If

you’d have asked consumers back

in 2006 what characteristics they

wanted of a mobile phone, would

they have said, “I want it to have

endless apps and to control it by

swiping my finger”? Probably not.

Sometimes, it takes a visionary like

Steve Jobs to create tipping points.”

Some disruptions you just don’t

see coming. Take, for example, the

Sony Walkman. Was there pent-up

consumer desire to be able to take

their music with them anywhere?

Probably not – but a single

innovation has now spawned a

vast industry.

So: has there been an important

technology tipping point that

Thomsen didn’t see coming?

“The whole social media thing

Predicting the future: it’s like making popcornISE begins this year, as always, with an opening keynote address that promises to be stimulating and entertaining. The speaker for 2015 is Lars Thomsen. Ian McMurray finds out exactly what it means to be a futurist

took me by surprise,” he

responds. “I never thought

it would grow so far or so

fast. But when I think about

it, what I see is that, in fact,

social media is little more

than another step in human

evolution – it’s a continuation

of a trend. Ever since we lived

in caves, we’ve formed social

networks. Now, we can build

them bigger and faster.”

Knowledge and information

are, as Thomsen confi rms,

fundamental to his profession

– and he’s fascinated by

the transformation that has

taken place in the availability

of knowledge over the past

decade or so.

“Did you know,” he asks,

“that a child on a laptop in a

classroom in Africa today has

access to more information

than a Harvard student would

have had 10 years ago? That

has enormous implications

for the development of

the continent: Africa could

be transformed within a

generation because it now

has that kind of access to

knowledge.”

And what can ISE visitors

expect from his keynote

address?

“Well, I hope they won’t

come hoping to see a lot of

slides – because they won’t,”

he grins. “I’ll be focusing on

making people think. What I’ll

be trying to do is to leave the

audience with two or three

vivid pictures of the future in

their heads that they want

to go home and discuss with

their friends and family.”

“If I can do that,” he

concludes, “I’ll have succeeded

because when we talk about

the future, we change it and

create it.”

The Opening Keynote will

begin at 18:00 on Monday

9 February in the Forum of

the Amsterdam RAI. The

Keynote will be followed

by ISE’s Opening Reception

at 19:00 in the Auditorium

Lounge. Entry to both

events is free of charge.

As someone who has been involved

in the Smart Building Conference

since its inception in Amsterdam

two years ago, conference

chairman and content editor Bob

Snyder is acutely aware of the dual

function it plays: to inform the AV

and electronic systems industry

about how the broad construction

industry functions in the smart

building area, and vice versa.

“At our London conference,

Siemens came out on our stage

and put up a chart that showed

the smart building without us,”

says Snyder with a wry grin. “The

problem for us as an industry is

that the building industry doesn’t

acknowledge us yet. Half of it is

not up where it needs to be with

its digital transformation. So part

of the exercise with the Smart

Building Conference is we’re

bringing in these diverse traditional

industries that are only now

becoming digitally transformed

and confronting them with this

end piece, which is us. At the

same time we’re trying to educate

InfoComm and CEDIA members

about what other people’s digital

transformations are so we

understand the opportunities.”

Snyder reports that ISE is an

excellent draw for getting high-

level speakers from outside the

AV and electronics systems

industry to come to the

Amsterdam Smart Building

Conference. “Once they get here,

they change their opinions of us

very quickly. Take the gentleman

from the Smart Building

Association of America who gave

one of our keynotes last year. He

gets to speak at 20-something

smart building conferences a year,

and he said ours was the best one

he’s ever been to, because a lot

of the others don’t address how

you treat the workplace and the

people within it.”

ROTATING TOPICSThe rapidly changing nature of

the subject area, and its sheer

size, mean that, in putting the

programme together for the

Amsterdam conference, Snyder

has to make some important

choices. “By virtue of this gigantic

digital transformation, the idea of

the smart building as an industry

construction is changing in front of

our eyes, so we’re chasing a moving

target. At the same time because

it’s so wide and diverse I’m rotating

topics from one conference to the

next, to ensure that ISE attendees

get exposed to every part of the

smart building industry and also

ensuring that those individual

industries get exposed to us.”

So for ISE 2015, the Smart

Building Conference has two key

focuses: on lighting, and on the

Internet of Things, neither of which

has been covered previously in

Amsterdam. “People who came

last year will fi nd a very diff erent

programme,” observes Snyder, “just

as people last year found a very

diff erent programme from the year

before. With each Smart Building

Conference we see new faces, we

hear new opinions – we’re not giving

the same lessons each time.”

In what is a highly impressive

line-up of speakers, one of the

outstanding names is Rogier van

de Heide – “one of the top people

in the world in lighting”, according

to Snyder. Van de Heide is chief

marketing and design offi cer of

lighting company Zumtobel Group,

but was previously chief design

offi cer for Philips Lighting, and

before that the global business

leader in lighting design at Arup. He

has also built a major profi le as a

TEDx presenter, giving speeches on

lighting and architecture.

“He’s going to address the topic

of why light needs smartness –

the networkability of LED lighting

and how it all comes together in a

dramatic way for buildings.”

Another high-profi le speaker

from the lighting world is Mike

Welch, co-founder and managing

director of Network Controls, whose

speciality is the global intelligent

lighting market. In ‘Intelligent

Lighting Control: Whose Business

Is it?’, says Snyder, “he’s going to

combine all the trends in lighting

and networking lighting and ask

who gets a shot at this and why –

what types of companies can sell it?

I think it’s great for the ISE audience,

because it helps them to fi nd out

to what degree they can become

involved – and it overlaps the

commercial and residential spaces.”

Turning to the other key focus of

the conference, Dipak Raval, head

of smart building architecture at

Cambridge Consultants, will be

giving a talk on smart sensors.

“The sensors can tell you a lot of

things: some detect motion, some

shoot video, read temperature,

detect gases and so on.

If you combine these sensors

with clever algorithms, there

are many possibilities to make

buildings smarter than they

are today. These smart sensors

are eff ectively the engine of the

Internet of Things, so it’s good to go

It’s a two-way thingThe Smart Building Conference has become a major fi xture in the international event calendar since its launch at ISE 2013. Paddy Baker talks to conference chairman Bob Snyder about what delegates can expect to learn in Amsterdam this year – and how the event serves to bring together diff erent groups within the smart building industry

08 Preview Edition 2015

into some depth into what can they

do, where can they go.”

Snyder singles out indoor location

as one important application.

“Smart sensors can pinpoint where

everybody is in a building: so if

you have an emergency and put

on the fire alarm, you can say, for

example, ‘Why isn’t Henry out of the

storeroom?’. When you put them

into large buildings or malls they

become commercially useful tools.

An indoor locator can tell someone,

via their smartphone, here’s exactly

where you are in the mall, here’s

where you want to go, and here are

the services you’re going to see on

the way.

“What we’re looking to hear in

this session is what’s the state of

the art, how fast is it moving and

to what degree do we have to be

influenced by it?”

The Internet of Things will also be

discussed in a panel session. “This

panel is going to be specifically

addressing building-related issues

on connected homes and smart

buildings, and how integrating

sensors will create a mountain

of Big Data and lot of control

possibilities for buildings that just

haven’t existed previously. How are

all the devices in the building going

to interact with the building as well

as with each other?”

Among the panellists will be

Gilles Thonet, managing director

Europe of the Zigbee Alliance,

plus a representative from

Greenwave, a manufacturer of

smart home products.

In an unusual step for the Smart

Building Conference, a speaker

from one edition of the conference

has been invited back to share

his message in another city. Paul

Fletcher, managing director of

architectural consultancy through…

will address the Amsterdam

SBC following a barnstorming

performance in London. In his

session, entitled ‘Smart Building

Myths: The Architect’s View’, he will

argue that more can and should be

done to design and create buildings

for people’s real needs.

“People were ready to give him

a standing ovation at the London

conference – he was controversial,

he was direct, he was powerful,

people loved him,” enthuses Snyder.

TWO TRACKSAs in previous Smart Building

Conferences, the programme will

split for parts of the day into two

tracks, covering the residential and

commercial markets.

One speaker whom Snyder says

he is particularly pleased to have

recruited is Nick Graves of Aquilla

Europe, a business consultancy

specialising in Apple products,

the Apple market and the Apple

ecosystem in Europe. Graves will

give an informed view about how

Apple Home Kit – a framework in

iOS 8 for communicating with and

controlling connected accessories in

the home – is likely to be deployed.

“You can’t get Apple people up on a

stage at an event like this, but Nick

is an ex-Apple executive. He spent

22 years there in different senior

management roles – he headed he

European platform management

group and his most recent job there

was to create, build and manage the

accessories business for the online

and retail Apple stores.

“So for 22 years he was close

to senior European management

– that’s as close as I can bring our

audience to how Apple thinks, what

Apple might do, and someone who

follows everything that Apple does.”

In the Commercial track,

in addition to Dipak Raval’s

presentation on smart sensors,

renowned audio consultant Roland

Hemming will present a session

entitled ‘Communications in Public

Spaces’. This will discuss what

has to happen in smart buildings

regarding public address systems,

emergency announcements and

safety issues under European

regulations, and the role that

networked audio systems have to

play here.

Additionally, both the Commercial

and Residential tracks will give

attendees the opportunity to learn

about the size of the smart building

opportunity in their respective

sectors, when experts present

market research data.

Snyder recounts that recently he

was talking to an AV journalist who

did not see the significance of smart

buildings to his readers. “He said,

‘Why are you asking my readers

to go into heating, ventilation and

plumbing?’ From my side we’re not

looking to persuade AV people to

do that – we’re trying to convince

them that all these disparate

systems are going to be connected

on the same network and they’re all

going to have to talk to each other.

The people in charge of heating,

ventilation and plumbing may end

up being their boss in the building –

because that industry is developing

very sophisticated digital building

automation systems, and they’re

trying to take control of the building.

They’re doing exactly what every

other industry including us wants

to do – they want to be the people in

charge. Nobody knows who that will

turn out to be, but it’s quite clear,

it’s irrefutable – everything in that

building is going to be on the same

network.

“So I think that smart building

is a very important subject for ISE

visitors to get their heads around.

You’re not going to come out able to

run HVAC systems, but you’re going

to be able to read what the future

will be bringing. Stay away at your

own risk!”

PRE-SHOW EVENTS: AUDIOFORUM@ISE 2015 For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2015

12 Preview Edition 2015

AudioForum is a day-long training

event dedicated to professional

audio topics and philosophies.

This is an event geared towards

professionals and system

integrators in this sector.

After the success of the previous

editions that took place in Europe

and Asia, AudioForum will head to

Room G001 at the Amsterdam RAI

on 9 February 2015 to be one of the

training experiences offered during

Integrated Systems Europe, the

most important European

event dedicated to the system

integration market.

DIGITAL TOOLSThe focus of this latest edition of

AudioForum will be the digital

tools that help audio designers

and systems integrators perfect

the design of audio systems,

installations, speakers and

components. The conference

will investigate topics such as

electroacoustics, simulation

software, measurement

instruments and design tools.

AudioForum began as a response

to various market needs. The event

helps to develop communication

within the sector while building a

meeting platform for professionals,

consultants and companies in the

market. It serves as an opportunity

for dialogue between the world

of professional audio and system

integration, which have so much

in common – from products to

technologies, from applications to

marketplace.

The first AudioForum took place

in Italy in 2013 in coexistence with

the fair and conference organised

by SIEC, the Italian Systems

Integration Experience Community.

Even by the first months of 2014,

AudioForum had taken its first steps

in the market on an international

level, always with great turnout and

satisfaction from partners.

Market leaders such as Bose,

Biamp, Lawo, 18 Sound, FBT and

RCF have supported the event in

past editions, considering it to be a

valuable communication tool.

The aim of the AudioForum

project is to create a new

opportunity to learn about the

market, in a context dedicated

to education and culture, and

to networking and meeting

opportunities.

Seminars will be held

by qualified professionals,

representatives of the largest

companies in the sector and by

experts from the most important

associations in the market. The

programme, which is being

finalised at the time of writing,

will include the participation of the

Audio Engineering Society (AES).

Breaks throughout the day

are dedicated to networking and

meetings. The day will close with

an open mic session featuring the

speakers of the day. This will be

a time not only to ask questions,

but to share trends, ideas and

perspectives.

CONTINUING PROCESSAudioForum is not just a single

event, but a process lasting several

months. The chosen theme will

be first treated via the medium of

Connessioni, magazine, website

and newsletter in the months of

December and January, and will

then become the focus of the

educational event on 9 February.

A video gallery with interviews

and videos of the seminars will be

made available in real time, live

from AudioForum on connessioni.

biz, while the post-conference ISE

Connessioni magazine will feature

a full report on AudioForum.

Francesco Galarà, AudioForum

project advisor at Connessioni, says: “People who are normally

involved come from system

integration environments. This is

an opportunity to break from their

busy schedule in order to provide

clear information about their

contribution to the technical field,

ultimately allowing the market

all the information necessary to

offer the best solutions to their

customers. AudioForum wants

to offer these professionals an

immersive day in which they can

sit and get information, or compare

their knowledge with the latest

technology innovations introduced

by the industry. AudioForum offers

an incredibly valuable day of

conferences to the world of audio

specialists and system integrators.

“It’s a privilege for us to stage

AudioForum at ISE, the most

important AV tradeshow in Europe,

and a crucial moment for this

industry.”

AudioForum arrives at ISE 2015

for its fifth edition, after the events

held in Milan (2013), Amsterdam

(ISE 2014), Mumbai (InfoComm

India 2014) and again Milan

(in co-operation with SIEC2014).

AudioForum@ISE is organised

in co-operation with Integrated

Systems Europe and supported

by the Italian SIEC (System

Integration Experience Community)

association.

SHOW EVENTS: CAPITAL SUMMIT For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2015

14 Preview Edition 2015

Every year seems to bring a

new ‘first’ for ISE. For ISE 2015,

it’s the Capital Summit. It has

been created, in effect, to bring

together AV companies looking

for investment with investment

companies looking to – well,

invest. Hosted by John Stiernberg

of Stiernberg Consulting and

MediaBridge Capital Advisors –

both of which organisations have a

strong affinity with, and knowledge

of, the AV industry – in association

with ISE, it takes place from 13:00

in Room E102 on Wednesday

11 February.

So: who should attend?

“This event will appeal most

to owners and managers of AV

companies who want to grow,

buy, or sell,” says Stiernberg.

“AV companies include branded

manufacturers, OEMs, distributors,

design consulting firms, and

integration/contracting firms. In

addition, it will appeal to individual

investors, fund managers, and

anyone responsible for business

development and is looking in on

the AV industry from a financial

perspective.”

LEARNING ABOUT ALLIANCES

“It’s geared to anyone in our

industry who wants to learn more

about mergers and acquisitions,

funding, or the strategic alliance

process; to anyone looking to

understand the state of the

industry in 2015 and beyond from

a financing perspective; and to

provide the opportunity to meet

like-minded people to build their

own network.”

The Capital Summit at ISE

follows a similar – and, by all

accounts, very successful event at

CEDIA Expo in September 2014.

“As a leading global trade event,

ISE as has an expressed goal of

educating the AV industry and

supporting the educational efforts

of its owners - InfoComm and

CEDIA,” continues Stiernberg. “The

three organisations benefit from

the Capital Showcase by enriching

the experience of ISE show

attendees and thus reinforcing

ISE’s position as the ‘must attend’

AV show in Europe, the Middle

East, and Africa.”

The growth that ISE has seen

over the past few years – in terms

of both exhibitors and visitors – is,

it seems, a reflection of a very

healthy, vibrant industry that is

well established and delivering

real value to customers. As such,

it’s hard not to believe that it is

attractive to potential investors.

“It depends on the investor,”

believes Stiernberg. “Our industry

is ‘off the radar’ of most financial

investors such as private equity

funds: in general, the companies

in our industry are either too

small to invest in – exceptions

notwithstanding – or too risky for a

variety of reasons.”

“The pro/commercial AV

industry is stable and relatively

mature, so it is not necessarily

for the ‘high risk/high reward’ or

venture capital type of investor,” he

adds. “The consumer/residential

side is potentially larger but is

less developed from a technical

standpoint – in areas like

home and building automation,

streaming media, wireless

networks and so on. There are

exceptions on the technology

and IT side, but AV may be either

too tame or too small for some

investors or just too wild and

uncharted for others.”

STRATEGIC INVESTORS“But for strategic investors – those

companies that are already in

our industry that are eager to

grow, diversify, or accelerate

product development through

acquisitions, investments, and

strategic alliances – there are solid

opportunities for growth and return

on investment,” Stiernberg goes

on. “For example, there are many

established AV brands that are

privately held, profitable, but do not

have the capability to grow further

on their own. This has led to the

upturn in merger and acquisition

activity in recent years. We forecast

that there will be further industry

consolidation on an ownership

level in addition to an increase in

strategic alliance activity.”

And what will those who attend

the Capital Summit know at 16:30

on Wednesday 11 February that

they didn’t know at 13:00?

“That’s tough to answer in a

single sentence,” muses Stiernberg,

“but let me try. Capital Summit

attendees will leave with a better

idea of what works and what

doesn’t work when it comes to

securing investment capital, making

investment decisions, and buying or

selling businesses in today’s rapidly

changing AV/IT market.”

In other words: just as ISE has

become a ‘must not miss’ show,

so the Capital Summit, for the

right companies and individuals,

looks as if it will be a ‘must not

miss’ event.

Find out about funding – and moreFew companies at ISE are not interested in growing their business. A new event, the Capital Summit, taking place on Wednesday 11 February, is designed to help them do that. Ian McMurray finds out more

SHOW EVENTS: SPORT FACILITY INTEGRATION SUMMIT For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2015

16 Preview Edition 2015

Last year SVG Europe – the sports

broadcasting content and events

producer and trade association –

organised the fi rst Sport Facility

Integration Summit at ISE. For

the second edition, taking place

from 9:30-13:30 in room E102

on 12 February, SVG Europe has

partnered with leading audio

consultant and project manager

Roland Hemming to devise a more

far-reaching programme that will

address every aspect of sports

venue integration.

The founder of RH Consulting,

Roland Hemming has worked

on countless landmark projects,

including serving as audio manager

for the 2012 Olympic Games. In

addition to co-programming Sport

Facility Integration Summit 2015,

he will chair the day’s proceedings.

“The real purpose of this summit

is for all the diff erent groups of

people involved in a stadium to have

a better understanding of what

each other does,” he says. “Because

these projects involve so many

diff erent people – from conception

through design, installation and

operation – many never get a

chance to meet and to properly

communicate the challenges they

encounter which may have been

caused unwittingly by people at

earlier stages in the project.”

Hemming himself will begin

proceedings with an examination

of the economics of stadium builds

and the practical stages that audio,

video and IT personnel have to

go through in order to create a

working sporting venue.

In the fi rst panel session

of the day, a team of leading

audio integrators – including

RH Consulting principal Richard

Northwood – will discuss their

preferred approaches to audio

system design and implementation

for large sports venues, touching

on the impact of some of the recent

regulatory changes.

Meanwhile, Andreas Hildebrand

from Ravenna networking

technology developer ALC NetworX

and Jan Jenca, co-founder and CEO

of ColosseoEAS, will be among

those examining the emerging

spectre of ‘The Great Convergence:

AV, IT and the New Networked

World’.

After a break for networking and

coff ee, the role of the consultants

in new-builds and refurbishments

will be addressed by a panel of

renowned acousticians and other

experts.

Closing out the programme,

the future of the sports venue will

be addressed by Dimitri Huygen.

Having helped turn the Belgian

Sports Technology Club into the

leading Belgian authority on an

international sports level, Huygen

has spent the last four years

heading the European Stadium and

Safety Management Association

(ESSMA). Since December 2013, he

has been involved in the Belgian

FA in running the EURO2020

project and stadium development

in Belgium.

Post-event, there will be an

opportunity for networking

drinks – a staple of all SVG Europe

technology summits.

Joe Hosken, general manager

of SVG Europe, comments: “We are

delighted to be returning to ISE

for the second edition of the Sport

Facility Integration Summit. The

2014 event hosted a number of

thought-provoking presentations

and panels, addressing critical

topics including control room

technologies, audio-video bridging

(AVB) and the fan experience.

“For Sport Facility Integration

Summit 2015, we are delighted to

join forces with Roland Hemming

to create a programme that

looks far more deeply into the

mechanics of venue systems

integration and what each

stakeholder brings to a project. By

doing so in the company of leading

consultants and AV professionals,

we also hope to off er a few

pointers on how these processes

might be streamlined – and so

made less stressful!

“ISE is the world’s best-attended

AV and systems integration

event, and hosting the Sport

Facility Integration Summit

within the exhibition gives SVG

Europe a unique opportunity to

bring together the overlapping

technologies and communities

of broadcast and systems

integration through a common

business interest in operating in

sports facility venues.”

Hemming says: “What does

everyone do in a venue

integration project? What steps

can be taken to make the process

smoother? And what happens

when, post-integration, the

broadcaster turns up with its

OB truck… do they have a clear

appreciation of what went on to

make the venue broadcast-ready?

To this and other key questions,

this summit will provide some

valuable answers.”

Integration Summit 2015 is free to

attend. For more information, and

M2D – MANUFACTURER TO DISTRIBUTOR For the latest show news and updates follow #ISE2015

18 Preview Edition 2015

While for some visitors to ISE the show

provides an ideal opportunity to look at all

the bright, shiny objects launched since the

previous year, for the large majority, it’s a

place to do business.

That’s certainly true for manufacturers

looking for new distributors – and

distributors looking for new product lines to

add to their range.

To facilitate the needs of both, ISE 2014

saw the launch of the innovative M2D

(Manufacturer to Distributor) programme.

Simply: it’s a portal that exists to put

manufacturers and distributors in touch

with each other – a kind of dating service

for businesses. And: it’s a completely free

service provided by ISE.

EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS“Last year, M2D exceeded our expectations

by some margin,” says Thomas Krackl of ISE.

“It was a huge success, so it was obvious

that we should do it again this year. At ISE

2014, 204 manufacturers registered with

the M2D programme, looking for distribution

in 818 territories. In its second year, now

that it’s more established, we expect the

numbers to be even higher.”

Scattered throughout the ISE halls on

special screens – in the Business Lounge,

for example – among the extensive signage

for which the show has become known,

lists of territories for which manufacturers

are looking for distributors will be

displayed, making it easy for visitors to spot

opportunities to enhance their business.

However, ISE has recognised that standing

in front of a screen scrolling through

upwards of 800 territories may not be the

best use of a visitor’s time at the show.

“Alternatively,” adds Krackl, “those lists

can be downloaded to a visitor’s mobile

phone or tablet to review later at their

leisure. Visitors can capture the on-screen

QR code to take them to the relevant site. We

are offering this service exclusively to our

visitors and exhibitors.”

COMPELLING REASONIn other words, involvement in M2D is only

possible from the RAI in February: another

compelling reason to be there.

Krackl notes that prospective distributors

can also go to the 2Signage stand – Stand

8-N210 in Hall 8 – where the company can

also make the list available. 2Signage is

providing the software that enables the

M2D programme.

How does a manufacturer get included

within the M2D programme?

“He simply goes to the ISE website

back office and logs in using his regular

credentials,” explains Krackl. “There, he’ll

see the M2D button. Clicking on that will

show him a list of territories, and he just has

to choose the ones where he’s looking for

representation, convey the product types that

are available and provide contact details. It’s

that simple. Manufacturers can update their

entry on the M2D portal right up to the day

before the show opens.”

The M2D programme was unquestionably

a success at ISE 2014 – so will it see any

improvements on its second outing?

“It worked very well last year,” according

to Krackl, “so you’ll just see a few tweaks to

make information more clearly visible and

make the overall system easier to use.”

The 2Signage digital signage software

on which the M2D programme is based

allows, according to the company, connection

to almost any form of structured data. Its

developer is German company 2Safer.

Applying its ITSM and SaaS knowledge,

2Safer – whose customers include some

of the world’s largest telecommunications

and transportation companies – developed

2Signage as an easy-to-use white label

digital signage system that allows

integrators to offer digital signage to their

customers using their own branding.

Also, 2Signage is said to offer enterprise-

grade security and is able to run on any

network at minimal risk. 2Signage comes

with pre-configured hardware which is said

to be as easy to set up as a common

DVD player.

With visitors expected to top 50,000 for

the second year running, together with

close to 1,000 exhibitors, ISE promises, yet

again, to be a must-not-miss event for AV

professionals. The M2D programme is just

one more reason to attend – to find that

perfect partner.

Dating for distributorsISE is all about doing business. Ian McMurray talks to ISE’s marketing and IT manager Thomas Krackl to find out about an initiative designed to help visitors and exhibitors uncover new opportunities

from different metropolitan

cities. Any city that matters

should feature a place like the

Foodhallen, where you can enjoy

a large variety of delicious bites

and drinks in an industrial-like

setting. Visitors can discover

the best of culinary Amsterdam

under one roof. Without a doubt,

the Foodhallen is the best place

According to ISE managing director Mike

Blackman, if you think of the ISE show like

a magazine, the exhibitors’ stands are the

advertising and the Showfloor Theatres

are the editorial pages. The aim of these

sessions is give the audience informative,

educational content – not sales pitches –

over a broad range of topics.

This year, a third theatre has been added:

the Unified Communications Theatre will

be situated in Hall 9, on the edge of the

exhibition area for this technology. This joins

the Residential Solutions Theatre in Hall 7

and the Commercial Solutions Theatre in

Hall 8.

As in 2014, the Showfloor Theatres have

been designed by event production and AV

rental house Improve. Many will remember

the circular theatre filled with plants that

the company designed for ISE 2014. Owner

Antoinette Wijfells – who is also a director of

TEDx – said: “ISE have asked me to design

something that is thrilling, enchanting,

inspiring and communicative. Too often what

is missing from business gatherings is a

sense of the natural world, I like to show

people that technology is just a tool to

help us achieve what we want as humans

on the planet.”

Currently the technology that will be

featured in the Showfloor Theatres is being

sourced from partners, but it’s clear from

the CAD designs reproduced here that the

Showfloor Theatres will be a long

way removed from the run-of-the-mill

seminar spaces that one generally

encounters at exhibitions.

All of the sessions are free to attend.

There’s no need to pre-register – just turn

up and enjoy the experience!

And then there were threeFollowing the success of the Showfloor Theatres at ISE last year, they return for 2015 in an expanded format, spanning three halls at the RAI with residential, commercial and now unified communications sessions

Master Class with Robert Simpson: Displays of Today and Tomorrow Speaker: Robert Simpson, Founder Director, Electrosonic

The session is divided into four sections. The fi rst is a refresher tutorial on such topics as visual acuity, the photopic luminosity function, contrast sensitivity function, temporal modulation transfer function and chromaticity. These are then related to display performance. Particular emphasis is given to existing and forthcoming standards in respect of the contrast performance of both fl at panel and projected images.

The second section is devoted to fl at panel displays. Mention is made of many fl at panel technologies that have fallen by the wayside, have not yet become well established, or are not mainstream. The main emphasis is on LCDs and LED displays. Besides explaining how these displays work, it explains what terms like ‘In-Plane Switching LCD’ and ‘Vertical Alignment LCD’ mean and reviews the phenomenal progress in LCD and the current state of the art.

The third section is devoted to projection. This describes how the main electronic projection technologies (LCD, LCOS and DLP) work, and the range of products available from pico projectors to high-power 4K. The hot topic at the moment is ‘laser’, so an evaluation of illumination technologies forms a signifi cant part of this section.

The fi nal section applications develops some of the topics already presented, for example, the problems presented by the very high data rates required, and introduces some more specialist aspects of displays. Examples include the choice of display technology for control rooms and 3D and autostereoscopic displays.

USB Deep Dive Technology Exploration for AV Design and Integration ProfessionalsSpeaker: Joe Cornwall, CTS-D, ISF-C, Technology Evangelist, Legrand

Universal Serial Bus is a core technology for interactive, presentation and collaboration AV systems. Now, three new standards have been released that will profoundly affect the deployment of USB-equipped devices: the USB Power Delivery Standard, the USB 3.1 data standard and the USB Type C connector.

This class will prepare the participant with a deep dive exploration of USB 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1, power delivery and connection technology standards, applications and performance. Participants will leave with an understanding of USB that will be vital when integrating interactive flat panels, projectors and whiteboards, USB charging stations, integrating mobile devices with fixed AV assets and more.Seminar Level: Advanced (5+ years’ experience)

Network Administrators: Cracking the Code Speaker: Kevin Huysegoms, CTS, Chief Wire Shark, A-Knowledge

This course will cover various potential issues when dealing with residential and/or corporate networks. Every topic from this course is based on a real-life example and it will have a theoretical and practical approach. This will teach you the terminology of networking aspects and will hopefully help you in the future when dealing with a network (administrator) issue.

Topics covered will include: the importance of the broadcast domain; network improperly configured for multicast traffic; ‘please get a copy of the logical network topology’; network latency; Apple Bonjour (mDNS) implementation; requesting VPN access; when the network administrator doesn’t own the 2.4GHz spectrum for his or her Wi-Fi network; true Wi-Fi roaming.Seminar Level: Intermediate (2+ years’ experience)

Deploying USB, HDMI and DisplayPort Bus Powered Solutions in AV System DesignSpeaker: Joe Cornwall, CTS-D, ISF-C, Technology Evangelist, Legrand

In today’s AV industry it’s common to design, install and maintain a system that relies on other devices, either further upstream or downstream in the system, for operating power. It has never been more important to have a clear understanding of the limitations of various common bus powered devices: interactive video panels rely on USB connectivity; auto-switching solutions rely on power delivered by the video source; DACs, media converters and signal extenders embedded in cables and termination boxes often depend solely on the power supplied by the video or audio source.

Do you know that your system will perform, or are you just hoping it will? This course will help you avoid the most common pitfalls of bus powered AV solutions and ensure that your system delivers quality, dependable performance.Seminar Level: Intermediate (2+ years’ experience)

Designing AV for the FutureSpeaker: Todd Hutchins, CTS-D, ISF-C, TSA, Chief Technology Officer, USIS AudioVisual Systems

Building-wide management technology is forcing the audiovisual industry to change its model at the core. The focus of AV is no longer about a single room design; the future of AV is about the global management of all systems under a single IP-based network so that all building-wide technology can be monitored, managed and controlled from a centralised command centre.

AV teams will need to begin shifting their thinking at the planning and design phases. Physical connectivity such as cabling and comms will need to be carefully considered so that all systems and protocols can be integrated into a centralised infrastructure.

AV is no longer a spoke in the wheel; AV has the capability and resources to be the driving force that maintains the infrastructure supporting all disciplines within any organisation.Seminar Level: Intermediate (2+ years’ experience)

Five New Technologies That Will Change the Industry: An AV PerspectiveSpeaker: Joe Cornwall, CTS-D, ISF-C, Technology Evangelist, Legrand

It took 25 years for telephones to reach 10% market adoption. It took less than five years for network tablet devices to achieve the same 10% rate. It took an additional half-century for telephones to reach 40% market penetration. Smartphones took less than 10 years to reach the same benchmark, if we time their introduction all the way back to the 2002 shipment of the first fully functional BlackBerry. The first country to complete the transition to digital video broadcast was the Netherlands, which switched off all analogue services in December 2006. That was just eight years ago! Imagine what the AV industry will look like in five more years! In this presentation we will work to answer the following questions: What is the future of analogue connectivity? How will internet and LAN technology affect AV system design over the next five years? What connections should we anticipate for future system expansion? How much resolution is enough to accommodate new and emerging content? How much bandwidth is enough? Working from a careful analysis of industry forecasts and cultural evolution, we will look at the numbers and the trends. We will explore technologies that exist right now and are currently being developed into products that will be put into a box to ship to you, to your clients, and to your industry over the coming months. The most valuable business asset is knowledge, and nothing is quite as powerful as knowledge of what’s to come! Seminar Level: Basic

JONES DESIGNS

Ask almost any integrator, and

they’ll tell you there just aren’t

enough hours in the day. It’s in

response to that problem that

Jones designs is exhibiting for

the first time at ISE this year.

The company was created by

Keith Jones to help integrators

to become more productive by

‘taking over’ from them at the

point where initial interest from a

prospect has been confirmed.

“Our clients say the most

important thing we do is save

them time, so they are out selling

the next job, not worrying about

how to install the one they just

sold,” said Jones (pictured).

“We can take on all the design

requirements for any sized smart

home or home cinema project,

from initial proposal, through to

project handover documentation.”

The company has been in

business for five years, with both

people and revenues growing

over that time.

“One of the hardest things

for us, though, is to gain the

installers’ trust that we are

actually able to do this – perhaps

more successfully than they

can do it themselves,” continued

Jones. “They just don’t believe it’s

possible until they take the plunge

and then realise what a great idea

this is and how much time and

effort it saves.”

Jones designs can ‘hand back’

the project to the integrator at any

time. Its services – collectively

known as designFlow, which it

is launching at ISE 2015 – start

with proposal creation and

enhancement, the provision of 3D

visualisations and the writing of

a detailed specification, through

to generating wiring plans, cable

schedules and elevations, and

providing schematics such that

all members of the installation

team are on the same page. The

company is, however, more than

happy to undertake the complete

installation and hand over to the

end user.

VIZ-ART AUTOMATION

Specialising in screens and

associated equipment for home

cinemas, exhibitor Viz-Art

Automation will show its product

range at ISE 2015.

The Uran masked electric

screen is available in matt white,

professional matt white and in

cine grey, with aspect ratios of

both 4:3 and 16:9 and screen

widths from 70in to 160in.

The matt white screen is a

three-layer, unity gain screen with

a density of 500 grams per square

metre and a light refl ection

angle of 150°. The professional

matt white screen uses heavier

material – 1,400g/sqm – and has

a gain of 1.1. For movies, Viz-Art’s

cine grey screen material has a

gain of 0.8 but a wider refl ection

angle of 170°. Perforated screens

are also available from the

company.

The Uran masked electric

screen is designed to be

completely invisible when not

in operation as it is installed in

a ceiling void. According to the

company, the tensioning system

employed guarantees absolute

Bridge and App perfect fit for PoE intercomGREEN-GO

A network bridge interface and

iOS app for a digital intercom over

Ethernet system will be launched

at ISE 2015.

Designed by ELC Lighting,

Green-Go’s communications

system plugs into an existing PoE

network requiring just a connection

of the outstations.

Once set up, all group data

is stored locally so there is no

need for any central matrix or

processor. A base station is

available from Green-Go, but this is

not mandatory. The company said

this was unlike most intercoms,

which rely on separate networks

of discrete wiring or dedicated

data networks and proprietary

protocols.

The launch of the Network

Bridge Interface and app will

allow a user to link two Green-Go

networks from different locations

via the internet. It can also be

used to connect a laptop remotely

in order to log into the intercom

network from anywhere.

Silvio Cibien, Green-Go sales

manager, said: “This interface

will allow any Green-Go user to

link their system via WiFi to our

new app. The app, which is free to

download from the Apple Store,

will make the full capacity of

beltpacks or table stations, with 32

full duplex channels, 250 groups

and 3,000 users, available from

your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.”

Cabin said the app was also

being developed for Android

devices. He continued: “The app

will allow the user to configure the

layout of their screen, for example

giving direct access to one to four

channels, and link their iPhone or

other Apple device wirelessly to the

wired Green-Go network. This gives

the user 32 channels in their hands

with every function identical to

the wired beltpack. One Green-Go

bridge interface connected to a

wireless access point will enable

connection

for two iPhone

users.”

HELVAR

New products in Helvar’s iC

range, which enables easy

colour control using DALI Type

8 (Dt8) commands, will be on

show during ISE 2015.

The 35W (LL35/2-E-DA-iC)

and 60W (LL60/2-E-DA-iC)DALI

drivers for tunable white enable

users to mix warm and cool

white light and light intensity,

to mimic outdoor lighting

conditions where morning

light has a different colour and

intensity than midday light.

The new ISE exhibitor says

this promotes feelings of

well-being and productivity for

people who spend big part of

their day indoors in artificial

light, such as office workers,

school students, hospital

patients and so on.

Helvar’s products allow

the user to pick a scene of a

certain colour and intensity with

the touch of a button, which

decreases programming time.

The Dt8 commands enable the

user to control two or more

output channels – which are

connected to two modules with

different colour temperatures –

over a single common address.

The use of just one DALI

address greatly reduces the

cost of a DALI lighting system.

The total power can be

divided between the two output

channels in any proportion.

Anyone who has been involved

in the projector market over

the past 20 years – which, to all

intents and purposes, is how long

the market has existed – must

marvel at what’s been achieved.

Back then, we claimed that 300

lumens was “more than enough

for lights-on presentations” –

and we dutifully trotted around

the shoot-out at InfoComm to

laugh at what some projector

manufacturers were doing. There

were some really bad projectors

– but now, there really aren’t.

And what became of some of

the pioneers of DLP technology in

projection? nView, Davis, Proxima,

Electrohome, Ampro, Liesegang –

where are you now?

I was very much involved in

DLP technology back in the day.

Texas Instruments bet big on

projection TVs – the consumer

market was always the ultimate

goal, rather than the commercial

market. What TI saw was a

future where DLP projection

technology would enable slim,

lightweight, large-screen TVs

that would always – always –

deliver superior image quality to

anything a flat panel display could

provide. How wrong were we?

REVOLUTIONISING MOVIE-GOING

And yet… DLP went on to

revolutionise the movie-going

experience. Just six years

ago, there were fewer than

4,000 digital cinema projectors

installed. Industry estimates

indicate that, in 2015, the installed

base will be very close to

135,000. That’s pretty much every

screen in the world converted

– and the large majority of

those projectors feature DLP

technology. Who would have

thought, way back when, that

a digital projector could ever

deliver images that equalled – in

many ways, surpassed – those

possible with film?

However: over the past decade

or so, the landscape has changed

dramatically. Large, flat-panel

displays are delivering levels of

image quality unthinkable at one

time. And, in the mainstream,

they’re at price points that were

equally unthinkable. There

are undoubtedly now many

applications and market segments

that would previously have needed

projection – but that have now

turned to flat-panel displays.

It would be easy to believe

that projection technology must

be on the decline. ISE 2015

will be absolute proof that it

isn’t. The fact is that projector

manufacturers have responded

with innovation after innovation to

create new market opportunities.

FLEXIBLE, ADAPTABLE

A prime example has been

the advent of the short throw

and ultra-short throw (UST)

projection segment. Now highly

popular, notably in education, UST

projectors overcome two issues

that previously saw projectors

unfavourably compared with

flat-panel displays: the casting of

shadows on the screen, and the

blinding glare coming from the

lens. Now, educationalists have

a highly flexible tool – projectors

are inherently easily adaptable

to spaces of different sizes – that

enables the interactivity and

engagement that are central to

current thinking in teaching.

It’s not just the projectors

themselves, though. Screen

technology has also come on

in leaps and bounds, enabling

images to be brighter and higher

contrast.

The fact remains: for images

over a certain size, projection will

continue to be the answer for at

least the foreseeable future.

Flat-panel displays of 80in

and above are fantastically

impressive – but it’s hard to see

them approaching the price of

a projector/screen combination

any time soon. There will be a

part of the market that projection

will continue to dominate: that

market may be slightly smaller

than it once was, but it’s still a

substantial opportunity.

And, of course, it’s unlikely

that flat-panel displays will

ever threaten the dominance of

high-brightness projection in

conference rooms, concerts and

visitor attractions. You won’t have

to walk far at ISE 2015 to see the

truth of that assertion.

It’s undeniably the case that

there is room in the market for

both technologies. Projection may

have lost some share over the

past several years but it seems

reasonable to believe that that

erosion has slowed and may

well have flattened – and without

some major and unexpected

developments in the cost to

produce flat-panel displays, its

future seems secure.

Projection: you’ve come a long way, baby

VTRON

An LED videowall that is claimed

to offer the industry’s highest

refresh rate (6800Hz), allowing

it to display a flicker-free image,

has been introduced by Vtron.

The new VLED series

videowalls are designed for large

indoor displays, with a choice of

1.488mm and 1.92mm pixel pitch

versions (the 1.92mm wall has

the 6800Hz refresh rate).

Both videowalls come

with integrated mechanical

and electronic design, skin

colour representation and P2P

calibration, and are designed

for high reliability and safety

with centralised and redundant

power supplies,

low-radiation emission

and dust proofing. The

walls use centralised

power supplies, to

eliminate noise generated

by any fan or other

cooling equipment, and

aluminium cabinets,

offering excellent heat

dissipation (reducing

the temperature

by 5°C-10°C), for

improved LED lifetime.

The VLED series

is integrated with

Vtron’s Digicom AP2000

all-in-one video processor,

which supports up to 28 output

screens and enables tiled

videowall displays to respond

as a single, ultra-high resolution

Windows desktop. It includes

redundant power supplies,

DIGITAL PROJECTION

The advent of professional, high

brightness solid-state illumination

has been a welcome stimulus to

the projection industry throughout

2014. Digital Projection seized

this opportunity and introduced

the first 3-chip, over-10,000

lumen laser phosphor projector

at ISE 2014 and we are seeing a

steep uptake of the technology

as the market realises the many

commercial and technical benefits

it has to offer.

The growth and excitement

looks set to continue as

4K resolution enters the

mainstream in 2015 and after

launching our laser phosphor

Insight 4K projector in 2014,

Digital Projection will follow up

with another world first in 2015:

a native 4K LED illuminated

Insight projector.

At 2,000 lumens, this product

might be considered niche, but

there are several industries

that have been asking for such

high fidelity displays with no

limitations on the viewing canvas

size or shape. Predictable

colorimetry and stable light

output are a must in many

visualisation and simulation

applications and by coupling

this with higher resolutions,

we believe there is a genuine

opportunity to significantly

improve user experience.

For the time being, 4K

solutions remain at the pinnacle

of the projection industry and it is

important not to neglect the need

for continuous improvement in

other areas.

Flat panels are getting bigger,

better and less expensive and it

would be foolish to believe they

will not continue to take ground

from some strongholds of the

projection market. However,

there are still many unique

attributes the projector can

offer and for this reason we

believe that manufacturers and

integrators alike will continue

to explore the use of curved,

irregular surfaces to create user

engagement beyond that of the

flat screen.

Digital Projection is committed

to the continuous development

of brighter, more efficient

projectors throughout the range,

with features aimed at the

unique requirements of each

vertical market.

58 Preview Edition 2015

As ever, the audio world is well represented at ISE 2015 in the commercial and residential sectors, whether as standalone systems or in the various component parts of the signal chain from microphone to loudspeaker

Industry headlines over

the past few months have

confi rmed the current buzz

around all things immersive

audio. Barco announced the

acquisition of 3D sound pioneer

IOSONO in late September in

a move that is set to further

strengthen its track record in

immersive audio for cinema.

Meanwhile, in the residential

space, Dolby has announced

that Paramount Pictures and

Warner Bros movies featuring

Dolby Atmos soundtracks are

to be made available for home

theatre enthusiasts with Dolby

Atmos-enabled AV receivers

and speakers, via Blu-ray and

streaming service VUDU.

Of course, ‘conventional’

surround sound is already a

default for many cinemas and

exhibitions; but immersive audio

promises to quite literally add

another dimension – height

– as the advent of enhanced

channel-based and object-

oriented technologies relieve

public audio of its traditional

restrictions.

Dolby Atmos adopts an

object-oriented approach to

audio as opposed to a channel-

centric one. For fi lmmakers, this

means that “any sound heard in

a fi lm scene is an audio object,

for example a helicopter taking

off or a child crying”, explains

Jonathan Jowitt, evangelist

content and e-media solutions,

Dolby Laboratories. “With

Dolby Atmos, you have amazing

fl exibility: the format provides

even richer, more detailed

sound by rendering to overhead

or height speakers and/or to

more than seven speakers at

the listener level,” he says.

Also making waves in the

immersive audio world is Auro

Technologies’ Auro-3D. Auro

claims to deliver ‘surround

sound with height’ with this

format, which embodies a

hybrid approach. “Auro-3D is

using both the channel- and

object-based approach,” says

Auro Technologies’ CEO, Wilfried

Van Baelen, “but in a diff erent

way than our competitors, in

order to fi rst create the most

natural immersive sound

experience in a channel-

based solution and then use

object-based technology for

interactivity and to further

defi ne more spot point sources

in the hemisphere.”

Germany-based IOSONO

Sound has undoubtedly

proven to be one of the most

infl uential forces in immersive

audio – and its acquisition by

Barco certainly won’t harm

its global profi le. The current

IOSONO off er incorporates

a ‘toolchain’ for production

(Spatial Audio Workstation),

distribution (IOSONO Container

+ Master Files) and reproduction

(the IOSONO CORE hardware

processor, which is described as

the ‘heart’ of IOSONO’s 3D sound

systems).

IOSONO, explains Barco

senior director strategic

business development

entertainment Brian Claypool,

is “designed for object-based

audio [but will] support channel-

based audio as well. Speaker

layouts can be designed fl exibly

for a specifi c purpose and

venue, [and] a full 360º system

is possible.”

Datasat Digital Entertainment

was formed in 1991 and began to

attract widespread attention after

its digital audio system was used

during production of Jurassic

Park. Originally engineered for

5.1 surround sound, Datasat

Digital Sound technology has

developed to improve the quality

of surround sound to 7.1 and

11.1. Datasat recently announced

a link-up with Dolby that will see

the Datasat RS20i home cinema

processor made available with

Dolby Atmos.

Focused fi rmly towards

the museum, theatre and

installed space in general, Out

Board UK’s TiMax SoundHub

is another animal again,

providing source/speaker

matrixing and spatialisation

scaleable from 16x16 up to

64x64 sizes. Explaining TiMax

SoundHub’s distinctive niche,

Out Board director Dave Haydon

explains: “Its unique delay-

matrix function and object-

based virtual pan objects allow

it to enhance both existing

conventional surround formats,

such as 5.1/7.1, and also

create dynamic spatialisation

soundscapes entirely.” The

system combines playback, 3D

spatialisation, show control,

sound system distribution and

management in one box.

The greater availability and

aff ordability of wireless audio

will surely be a vital factor in

determining how widespread

immersive sound environments

ultimately become. But with the

Barco/IOSONO announcement

indicating the beginning of

convergence and consolidation

in the marketplace, we can

expect the commercial push

for commercial and residential

applications to become

increasingly acute.

For now, with all these

companies showing their wares

at ISE 2015, there’s no better

opportunity to compare and

contrast them for yourself.

DAN DUGAN SOUND DESIGN

Three new products featuring

automatic microphone mixing

technology will be unveiled at

ISE 2015, adding MADI I/O and

Dante I/O capabilities as well

as a physical interface to the

Dugan range.

Dugan products are intended

for use with multiple live

microphones in broadcast talk

shows, corporate meetings,

educational settings, live

theatre and other applications.

The products are not mixers in

themselves, instead they are

accessories to sound mixing

consoles and patch into the

input insert points of a mixing

console, giving the board

operator all of the features of

the board such as EQ and sends

along with automatic mixing.

The Dugan Model M uses

MADI I/O. It provides 32

channels of Dugan auto-mixing

at 96k or 64 channels at 48k.

Equipped with PoE, it is housed

in a half rack case. The Dugan

Model N offers Dante I/O and

will supply 32 channels at 96k

or 64 channels at 48k along with

PoE , also in a half rack case.

The Dugan Model K is a

physical interface for all

networkable Dugan products.

It gives the user physical

buttons for controlling a

system made up of any

number of Dugan units.

The company claimed its

technologies provide the best

mix of live mics, providing

fast, transparent cross-fades

without up-cutting, choppy

sound or shifts in background

noise. Transitions between

talkers are consistent no matter

how many mics are open.

ALCONS AUDIO

The CRS12GT from Alcons

Audio will be showcased at ISE.

The two-way passive-filtered

loudspeaker features proprietary

multiple-patented pro-ribbon driver

technology. Alcons said the speaker

is designed to meet all requirements

of current and future Digital Cinema

immersive surround sound formats.

According to the company,

the CRS12GT combines full clarity

and intelligibility with an unusually

high dynamic range and up to 90%

less distortion than traditional

cinema surround systems.

Utilising identical MHF pro-

ribbon transducers for screen and

surround systems, the speaker

aims to provide a wide and uniform

sound stage throughout the listening

area. Alcons said this was especially

noticeable in multichannel cinema

surround systems and in surround

systems for performing arts theatre.

The CRS12GT system consists

of one RBN601 6in pro-ribbon

driver for HF and a vented 12in

mid-bass for LF reproduction. The

CRS12GT HF section has a 1,000W

peak power input, enabling a 1:15

RMS-to-peak dynamic range with

lowest distortion from 1,000Hz to

beyond 20,000Hz. The absence of

a compression threshold caters for

a linear tonal balance at any SPL,

claimed the company.

The patented horizontal

dispersion of the Alcons RBN601

pro-ribbon transducer guarantees

a very stable sound projection

throughout the operating bandwidth,

both on- and off-axis.

The all-Neodymium speaker

configuration lowers the total

mounted system weight and

facilitates easier installation.

thedailyTaking a look back atInfoComm’s journey since1939, InfoComm CEO DavidLabuskes feels that whilethe technology may haveadvanced dramaticallysince the days of filmstripprojectors, the core goal ofthe association has alwaysbeen broader thantechnology.

“The celebration of our 75 years of existenceis not about pattingourselves on the back but about usingtechnology to transformhuman communications,”reflected Labuskes. “The need to enhancecommunications betweenpeople is just asimportant today as it was75 years ago, and that willcontinue for another 75 years.”

To celebrate this milestone, the association is distributing two free vouchers to all ISEregistrants this year, allowingthem access to any educationalcourse it is running at the showthis year. Labuskes is delightedwith the uptake so far, noting that 322 attendees participated

in training on the first day of the show.

“It’s our birthday gift. We thoughtit was poetic to focus on the coredelivery of education that ourassociation is so committed to andto make that available to everyonewho registered for ISE.”

Striving for quality, the associationpublished its Audiovisual Systems

Performance Verificationstandard as an ANSIstandard in December 2013,and Labuskes is excitedabout this whole process.

“It allows the use of adocumented and industry-approved process to agree towhat an AV system shouldaccomplish before it’sinstalled and to verify that it has achieved its goals onceit has been installed. It’s aclosed loop, ensuring qualityand allowing that quality tobe defined by the client andby the service provider. That’s critically important.”

Globalisation is also part of InfoComm’sstrategic plan. While basedin North America, theassociation has expandedits membership worldwide

in recent years. “For the first time in 2014,

As this issue went to press, we learned of

an addition to the InfoComm professional

development sessions. On Wednesday 11

February at 16:00, an ISE-exclusive session

will take place entitled ‘Better than human

music mixing - live music auto-mixed

for the 21st century’. This will introduce

a series of revolutionary developments

that allow live music to be mixed totally

by computer to a standard as good as, or

perhaps better than, humans. How will this

technology change audio engineering?

Presented by RH Consulting in

association with Korean Advanced

Technology Research Group, the session

will feature an introduction to the auto-

mixing technologies involved and a

demonstration of the system mixing music.

A question and discussion session will

cover how this technology will be used and

how it will impact the audio market.

Entry to the session costs €40; InfoComm

members and guest members may attend

free of charge.

If you’ve been a regular ISE attendee for

the past few years, then you’ll have noticed

the show growing – not only in terms of

expanding to fill every hall of the RAI, but also

in terms of the number of visitors, making

aisles, corridors and escalators noticeably

busier with each successive year.

Last year, 51,003 stepped through the

doors at ISE. This means that the show now

attracts as many people in a single day as

it used to over three days not so long ago.

Even the ‘quiet’ last day in 2014 drew 18,000

people, which is a higher attendance figure

than any of the first five ISEs.

Not only has the total attendance grown,

but the average time spent by attendees

has also gone up as the show has spread its

footprint. The show is now too big to take in

everything in a single day, and so inevitably

the middle day has the largest attendance.

Mike Blackman, ISE managing director,

reports that some exhibitors have expressed

concern about not having enough space on

their stands to accommodate the high levels

of visitors. By any standard, this is a nice

problem to have, but it is one that needs to

be addressed. As he told a press conference

in December: “The best way to deal with this

is not for our exhibitors to take bigger and

bigger stands, so we can’t accommodate

new exhibitors, but to allow them more time

to speak to attendees.” So ISE 2016 will run

from Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February – a

four-day show.

It will be interesting to see how the fourth

day affects the pattern of attendance at

the show. Having four days addresses the

inevitable middle-day bulge, or at least allows

the possibility of flattening the attendance

curve to some extent. With ISE 2016 running

to a Friday, I expect that more visitors will be

tempted to extend their stay in Amsterdam

over the weekend; but conversely, many of

the others may head for home at an earlier

time than in previous years.

According to Blackman, his team is

currently looking at how the four days will

be structured. For instance, should the

days be themed? Should the first two days

be restricted to the channel? (This might

be tricky as many attendees like to bring

their customers with them.) Will there be

additional events at the end of the show to

encourage people to stay longer? Nothing

has been decided yet, but the aim is to make

an announcement during ISE 2015 after

discussions with ISE’s exhibitor committee.

What about further into the future? Well,

the accessibility of Amsterdam has been a

major factor in drawing a growing audience

to ISE. Building work is underway at the RAI

to expand the showfloor area – and also to

create on-site hotel accommodation – with

the first new buildings coming on stream in

2016. There is also scope to use temporary

structures, in Congress Square and at the

front of the complex, to provide additional

exhibition space. Blackman said recently:

“We’ve done some analysis to see where

our growth will be, and we believe that the

Amsterdam RAI can accommodate ISE for

another five or six years.”

One of the good things about all of this is

that it sends out a clear signal to the world

about the strength of our industry.

The growth in visitor numbers is coming

mainly from specifiers rather than the

channel – so the event is drawing in a

wider range of attendees with each

successive year. ISE’s continuing success is

unquestionably a good thing for everyone

working in AV and electronic systems

integration as the industry increases its

influence on the world stage.

OPINIONAdventures in space and time

Managing the expansion of ISE’s exhibitor and attendee numbers has involved increasing two types of resource, says thedaily editor Paddy Baker
