Novice ChessNow that the Fischer publicity has worn out, we see that many, many of the new playershave dropped out of act ive chess in d isenchantment . Th is art ic le i s geared towards thenew players who are s ti ll hanging in there and whose rat ings are below 1200. Obv ious lythose who dropped out will never improve . Also, it is obvious to the experienced chessplayer that what these remaining new players need is pract ical experience In some fourspecific areas o f chess. Play with a strong p laye r is of course ve ry good training , theyare all willing to instruct. However , here is a number of things each new player shoulddo on his own at home wit h his books and set at ready position.1. Open ings. Study four openings as whi te and black against P-K4 and P-Q4.

Most of you have already memorized one or two openings andhave them incorrect . SoI say check the books on these openings and f rank ly rememorizethem for 10 moves o r so. Take one opening pe r nigh t at home until you are secure thatyou know all 10 moves. You may not understand the bas ic ideas behind these openingsbut if you get off to a good 10 move start, then you are going to give those 1300 players;a headache. You wi II be lost when your opponent leaves t he book, bu t you are lost any-way as it is now. Don't t ry to memorize the entire Sicilian Defense; just 10moves ofone var ia tion and play i t every t ime you get the chance.2. Tact lcs , This area is fun to study. You need a book on midd I e g ameproblems such as - Combinations, The Heart of Chess- by Chernev. Keep this bookwhere you can study one problem a day even if it is at odd times like when dressing,or just be fore going to sleep. Don't peek at the answers, stay with it for several daysyou'll be amazed at how an idea will come one day when it wouldn't the day before.3. Endgame. This actually is the easiest area to study. Get one of theinstructive endgame books such as -Endgame, Essential Knowledge - by Chernev.Take one basic idea as a subject for one nigh t's study and learn one thing at a time.Don't forget to plan on a review per iod . A dozen basics here will show rapid improve-ment.4. Strategy. This IS slow going stuff, so don't bite off too many pagesat once . Genera l manuels on chess are needed here; Chess Fundamentals _ writtenby Capab lanca will fill the bill.

Now in closing, take it fr om an oldtimer (49 years 'of bad chess) that anyone of theabove Items Will add 100 USCF po int s to that 1200 rating within 6 months or threet.Qurnaments. It wil .' increase your...enjoyment of the royal game, however let me has-ten.to add that It Will not increase your financial income. We play for fun , not thealmighty dollar . In sp ite of all the Fischer money publicity, chess is fun.

ANOTHER MIRACLE!If this weren't a year of "miracles" 'for Indiana chess,it would be hard to believe that a team from Shelbyville could

take Third Place in the National Junior High School,Champ-ionship (NewHaven, Conn., May 3-4). Add the facts that theShelby team was almost certainly the youngest in the tourna-ment; that it had played only two matches before; and that itstop player ranked 21st in afield that included an Expert (2018in junior high!), twoAplayers and many B's -- and the "mir-aculous" nature of their achievement is clear.

The only two matches the Shelby team had played pre-viously were the state JH regionals (Whiteland) in March andthe Indiana JHS Championship in April - - and they won both. This may have surprised some, but not their coach, formerIndiana champion Paul Fisher. At Boards One and Three theteam had two tournament "veterans ;." aged 12 and 11, ChrisWheeler (1365) and Scott Richardson (1278). At Boards Twoand Four it had secret w apons Mik Wiseman (PR 1325) andhrie ra b (PH 10GO)~ both pror:nhd.ng n w players. The next day Fisher, story1 1 1 hnnel, H t out ' t o . raise funds from Shelbyville merchants.Ilut tIll Ll)tUUI\tJlont was four days, 800 miles and about $1200uw ny - mpossfble. Thursday the contributions had passedth th usand-dollar mark and I was on the phone discovermgth t no con 1vable combination of airlines, buses and limou-ames could get the team from here to NewHaven. Fridayaf-ternoon Fisher picked upthe last donation and headed straightfor the airport. Already weary, the team flew to.NewYork, rented a car, and get to NewHaven rather late. (But not toolate for Mike Wiseman to get into a hot skittles match in themotelv) Back in Shelbyville, the mother of one of the playersdreamt that night that the team would finish in the top five --impossible.

Saturday night the boys phoned home to report that theyhad rolled up an excellent score of 10 1/2 - 5 1/2 in the firstday's play. Chris Wheeler and Mike Wiseman scored 3 - l.(In avery stiff game, Chris almost upset the Expert, defend-ing champ Lewis Cohen; Cohen went on to score 8-0 for thetop individual honors). Scott Richardson added 2 points andChris Graebe 2 1/2, including the stunner of the day: holdingan A player 8.00points stronger to a draw. Paul Fisher goton the phone, and, eerily, repeated word for word what the~ot~er had dreamed -- that the team would finish in the topfive if they could keep playing well. But could they, tired asthey were?. Fatigue did take its toll on Sunday, but the Shelby team

still managed a solid 9 1/2 - 6 1/2 score for the day -- goodenough to win the third place trophy and $100. Boards 3 & 4scored well, and oddly, all four starters finished with 5 - 3s~ores. None of the Shelby starters turned in a losing scoreeithe r day, and even inexperienced John Bray picked up threep.oi?ts in eight games. In contention all the way, Shelbyvillefinished 2 1/2 points behind the winners, Waltham Central ofMassachusetts and Great Neck, N.Y. To their amusement, they finished 1 1/2 points ahead ofthe Illmots champs, ateamthat came with 8 players and matching jackets.

At least one ether Indiana player competed. Playing asan independent, -Joe Hurt (1638) scored a fine 6 - 2 to finish9th in individual play, in a field of 134.

When the team got off the plane at Weir Cookon Mondayafternoon, they were so washed out they could hardly smile,so great had the strain been; in fact, they walked around likezombies all week. The sports editor, a Believer now, gavethem some fetching publicity, and at the annual awards day atShelbyville JHS, a student body which had never even thought~bout chess rose to give them a standing ovation. (I'm sorry~fthat.so~ds like bragging; they earned it.) The mood today1SWalt TIll Next Year! (After one miracle, why net more?)Chris Graebe has one more year of JH eligibility, all the resth~ve at least two. So, more or less intact, the Shelby team~Ill h~ve two more shots at the national junior high champ-Ion~hip, andwho knowswhat they might doinhigh school com-petltion after that? -- Tim Wheeler

Recently, I was at the 4 th. Midwest Adult and it was brought to my attention that myRosewood & Elbonywood chess set was to dark for the average chessplayer to tel lthe difference between the red and black men; so I'm now trying to obta in a set madeof Sandalwood from India. I feel sure this set will be even more magnificent then theothe r two sets and am taking orders for these set s to be used With the Rosewood o rE lbonywood chess sets. Chessmen have fel ted bases and each set has lead-weighto f 2 lbs , which makes this set extra heavy and g ives the pieces a good feel; p lusbeing very stable. A f ine tournament chess set in King size 4 inches. Se t is packedin vinyl-leather covered wooden DOX. Store rate $40.00 each set ; ask for s izeableISCA discount.
