President’s Message:Ross Sanders

Sport Biomechanics: We need yourbest work - it's tough

The first issue of ‘Sport Biomechanics’, thejournal of the ISBS, is expected to be in printprior to the San Francisco Conference. Themembers of the Executive Editorial Board haveset strong guidelines for authors and reviewers toensure both scientific quality and ‘friendliness’for sports practitioners. We have a mix ofinteresting articles for the first edition. Thanks tothe reviewers for their conscientious efforts. They have done an excellent job and have givensound advice to authors.

We need papers for the second edition and seekto maintain the high standards achieved for thefirst edition. The table below indicates clearlythat articles will proceed to publication only afterrigorous review. The rejection rate is high:

Accept: 5.6%Accept with minor changes: 27.8%Reject and Resubmit: 55.6%Reject: 11.1%

If you have conducted research in a rigorousway and have findings that are useful for sportpractitioners, please submit your work forpublication in ‘Sport Biomechanics’.

Author Guidelines for Papers Submitted to‘Sport Biomechanics’

Papers may be submitted for publication in anyof the following sections of 'Sport Bio-mechanics': Original Applied Research;Strength and Conditioning; Reviews;Teaching; New Methods and TheoreticalPerspectives.

Regardless of the section, the articles must bescientifically rigorous and will be peer reviewedby at least two reviewers with expertise in thetopic. The review will be blind, that is, no

indication of the authors' names or affiliationswill be sent to reviewers. Where appropriate, information to establish the validity of themethods, and the magnitudes of errors, should beprovided (other than in review articles). Thereshould be sufficient information of a technicalnature to allow duplication of the study by others. The material should be fastidiously referenced inkeeping with the requirements of other scientificjournals.

Notwithstanding the above, authors shouldendeavour to write in a style that is 'readerfriendly' and, in particular, 'coach friendly'.Achieving this, while maintaining scientific rigour,is obviously a major challenge for authors, reviewers and the editorial team. Authors arerequired to adhere to the following:

Title: The title should reflect the practicalimportance of the research as well as indicate itsscientific basis. Thought should be given tocapturing the interest of practitioners withoutdetracting from the scientific nature and merit ofthe research.Abstract: The abstract should be limited to 200words and should conclude with clear statementsregarding the practical implications of theresearch for practitioners or, in the case ofarticles for ‘New Methods and TheoreticalPerspectives’, for sport biomechanists.Introduction: The introduction should clearlyelaborate the potential benefits of the researchand its findings for sport practitioners (coachesand competitors). The purpose should be statedin a manner that highlights the practical benefitsof the study. An outline of how particularvariables are related to performance, in simpleterms, could be included in the Introduction, ifappropriate.Method: The method should clearly establishthe overall procedures and the subject populationinvolved. The method should include all relevanttechnical information to clearly establish thescientific merit of the study. However, authorsshould present this material in as readable amanner as possible and provide guidance where

Page 3: ISBS Newsletter Vol18 #1

3

difficult and technical information is presented.Material that is difficult, such as complexmathematical models, should be included as anAppendix and referred to in the Method section.Elaborate statistical procedures and validationprocedures should also be included in theAppendix. The Method section may also incorporate thefollowing:a. Simple definitions of technical terms (this maybe included as a section of its own at thebeginning of the methods section).b. If appropriate, and if not already incorporatedinto the Introduction, a description of therationale for selecting particular variables foranalysis and their relationship to performance orinjury should be included. This description shouldbe in simple terms with an appropriate headingsuch as 'Variables Selected for Analysis andTheir Relevance to Performance (or Injury)'.Results: The Results section should be writtenin as friendly a manner as possible. However, noclaims should be made without citing the relevantstatistical results. Sport practitioners should notbe prevented from grasping the results due to alack of knowledge of statistical procedures andterminology. The statements should reflect bothrigour and readability.Discussion and Implications: This sectionshould be separate from the Results section andshould elaborate the implications of the results. It should be possible to read this section freelyand without recourse to the statistical results orfurther statistical information and terminology. In fact, practitioners should be able to skip theresults section and be able to comprehend thefindings of the study, and their implications forsport performance and/or injury prevention, fromthis section alone. Achieving this will require skillfrom authors to restate findings in simple termswithout appearing to repeat unnecessarily theinformation provided in the Results section. Ifappropriate, this section may include coachingpractices, training drills and activities that areindicated by or arise from the research orreview. Conclusions: This section should summarisethe main outcomes of the paper in terms ofscientific findings and their practical implications.

Submitting the ManuscriptTo expedite the review process manuscripts willbe handled in electronic form. Manuscriptsshould be submitted to the Editor by e-mail as anattachment, preferably as an MS Word (.doc) oralternatively as an RTF. Currently the Editor’s e-mail address is: [email protected]

Manuscripts should be written in English, double-spaced in Arial 12 Font with normal characterspacing. The formatting style should beaccording to the guidelines in the PublicationManual of the American PsychologicalAssociation (APA), Fourth Edition, 1994(examples of this format can be seen in anyedition of Journal of Applied Biomechanics).Tables and figures should be appended to thedocument, each on a separate page, rather thanwithin the document. Do not send figures inEPS format. If you have figures requiring largeblocks of memory (larger than 1.4 MB) pleasesend the document ZIPPED.

On the basis of the review, your paper will becategorised as one of the following:Reject: Not suitable for publication in SportBiomechanics.Reject and resubmit: The paper is rejectedunless the authors can make satisfactoryresponses to the reviewers' concerns. The paperwill then be accepted only if all the concerns areaddressed to the satisfaction of the reviewers.Accept with minor changes: The authors mustrespond to the reviewers' concerns to thesatisfaction of the editor.Accept: The paper is accepted with only minorediting required at the discretion of the editor.

VP for Awards CBarbara Gowitzke

As the time for the San Francisco symposiumapproaches, it is a good time to remind membersthat you or your students may be eligible toregister for the competition for a NewInvestigator Award. This purpose of this awardis to recognize new researchers and toencourage them to become productive membersof the Society by expanding the knowledge baseof sports biomechanics through study anddissemination of information. Please see theISBS website for details on eligibilityrequirements, etc.

It is also a good time to remind members tomake suggestions for possible candidates in threedifferent areas: Fellow, Life Member, andGeoffrey Dyson Lecturer. A full description ofthese distinctions can also be found on the ISBSwebsite as well as in the last issue of thisnewsletter. It was decided at the Hong KongSymposium that all awards would be presentedat the closing banquet rather than during theAnnual General Meeting.

And finally, if members have some suggestionsfor the Awards Committee on our operation, ornew ideas we might consider, please let us hearfrom you. We are always open to suggestions. The four members of our Committee at this timeare:Tony Bauer, [email protected] Brown, [email protected] Miller, [email protected] Gowitzke, [email protected] the Chair of this Committee, I amendeavouring to enlarge the Committeemembership so that we have the advantage ofadditional personnel for making awardsdecisions. Currently, according to the By-Laws,two or more Board members are eligible to sit onthis committee, in addition to the SecretaryGeneral, the Vice-Presidents for Conferences, and the Vice-President for Awards.

After the successful congress of Hong Kong, where everybody had the opportunity to see thehigh quality of the annual symposium of ISBS,my activity as ISBS Vice President of PublicRelations was concentrated on two main actions:² to flank the organizers of the incoming

Congresses² to promote a coordinated action to publicize

the Coaches' Information Service (CIS).By considering the first item, good interactionshave been established with John Blackwellchairman of ISBS 2001 and Kostas Giannikelischairman of ISBS 2002 in order to support andpromote relationships with potential Patrons ofthe two events. As you know, the help of authorities, outstandingpersonalities and organizations plays an importantrole to favor the success of this kind of events. Iwarmly ask the ISBS members that are going toorganize congresses, meetings or seminarsrelated to sport biomechanics, also at local level,to contact me to obtain the patronage of ISBS orto utilize my position as link with the people oftheir interest. I will be very glad to give all mysupport. The second action is aimed to publicizing CISaround the world. Laurie Malone, MarioLamontagne, Vasilios Baltzopoulos, JoakinAcero, Youlian Hong and Bruce Masonaccepted to be part of the PR committee and actat regional level. They were asked to identifyorganizations and people potentially interested toCIS, collect the addresses, send them an officialletter of ISBS arranged by Ross Sanders and meand, finally, follow up the arising contacts. Theareas of action of each member are USA,Canada, western Europe, South America, Asiaand Australia – New Zealand respectively.Unfortunately I was not able to identify or collectadhesions from eastern Europe and Africa. Ihope that these newsletters could be theoccasion to cover this gap.A special thank to Hans Gros that, by hisinitiative, offered an help to operate in Germanyto further support the activity of VasiliosBaltzopoulos. Please take Hans Gros as an

outstanding example and contact me or the PRCommittee to operate in your country. The reader of these newsletters do not forgetthat distribute "information" is a powerful tool tosupport ISBS and CIS. I can mention, as anexample, the results obtained in Italy, where withthe help of a young ISBS member, AlbertoLanzani, the National Olympic Committee, SportFederations, Sport Organizations, Universitiesand magazines, especially electronic, werecontacted. To date there are links to CIS onmany Italian sport related web sites and the CISaddress appeared in an article published on a toplevel national weekly magazine.A secondary result of this action is representedby the availability of a data bank, based on theaddresses collected around the world, that couldbe easily used in the future for the publicizing ofnew initiatives of ISBS.

ISBS Literature ServiceOn the ISBS WWW site you find the Table ofContents of all ISBS Proceedings since 1987.Using the search tool is an efficient way tolocate papers of interest.Since 1999 ISBS has offered a 'LiteratureService' free of charge to it's members: Anymember could fill out the <Paper Request Form>online and ask for photocopies. Non membershave to pay a fee to cover the cost of handlingand mailing. This service was heavily used. Inseveral cases the requests amounted tophotocopying hundreds of pages. In the future the service free of charge willtherefore be restricted to a maximum of fivepapers per member and year. Additional paperswill have to be charged separately. The currentrates are: 5 Euro (equivalent to 5 US$) fee forshipping and handling plus 1 Euro (US$) for eachrequested paper. Thus if you need 4 papers youhave to pay a total of 9 Euro (US$).

Who's Who in ISBSCommunication amongst and with all ISBSmembers has become ever more important and, with the use of modern information technology, easier. In order to facilitate the exchange ofinformation and resources, ISBS implementedthis service. In conjunction with a growing andup-to-date data base, this tool can be used tosearch for a person, a biomechanist with aspecific expertise or colleagues in a specificcountry. The search tool browses the data basefor the string you submit in the SEARCH field.Any matching data set is displayed.Currently, there are more than 60 ISBSmembers listed. If you wish to be added to thisdata base, please go tohttp://www.uni-stuttgart.de/External/isbs/click to <Who's Who>' and follow the link

< Submit yourinformation for the WHO'S WHO in ISBS database>. In the past month, several incompletesubmissions were received. Whilst you do not

have to fill in all fields, there is little sense to justput in a name. Since the form is processed by aninternet service provider (cwak), there is no wayto track back those submissions. If your datadoes not appear in the list within one month, please try again or send a mail to:[email protected]
