St. Casimir. Many of the parishioners are beginning to

find new parish homes, so if you see some new faces,

please give your condolences and welcome them with

open arms.

I hope you are all well.

You are in my prayers. Fr. Karl Pung

Back to Normal?

When will we back to normal routines in the parish? I do

not know. I am tentatively hoping to resume Coffee and

Donuts in August, but we will see. We also have our

Parish Picnic planned for August 16th and will have to

play that by ear as well. I am looking forward to you

coming forward to communion at Mass, to again

distrusting the Precious Blood, to hugs and handshakes

from parishioners, and having meetings and classes

again. I wish I could give a solid date but there isn’t one.

I suspect at some point we will just start living our lives

again knowing the risks. For some, whenever we start

reducing restrictions it will be long overdue and for

others it will always be too soon. The decisions will be

made with prudence and discernment following the

directives and leadership of the diocese.

On a related note, every week I receive complaints or

criticisms about what I am and am not doing to keep

people safe, or am too restrictive and giving into fear. It

is a messy situation and there are not perfect decisions

even if you think you have them. Please assume good

intent. You will notice that every parish implementation

of the guidelines looks different. Each pastor is trying to

be prudent and find the right way for his parish. Pray for

us and each other. Also pray that we do not compete

with one another, except in showing love and pursuing

holiness.

Diocesan Services Appeal

Congratulations! We have made our parish goal! Thank

you to everyone who has contributed. I know this was a

tough year. Completing our goal is a testament to your

lives as disciples, your trust in God, and your generosity.

Thank you. If there are some of you who have not made

a gift but still want to contribute, please do so online at

www.dioceseoflansing.org or through the DSA envelope

sent to your home. Our parish receives back from the

diocese 50 percent of everything over our goal. I know

your gift will help both the diocese and our parish.

St. Casimir

St. Casimir’s offices are closed. We still have one

weekend Mass every Sunday at 9:45 until we have the

final closing Mass, which is scheduled for August 2. For

the next several weeks I will be missing one of the

Sunday Masses at St. Mary so I can be at St. Casimir.

We did set up the schedule so that I could do all the

Masses at both places if I needed. While I have help, it is

nice not to have run back and forth. Continue to pray for

the people of St. Casimir. We have a holy hour on

Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 for that particular intention at Cont...

Choral singing

This is the tenth article in a weekly series about the role of

sacred music in Liturgy. This week we focus on choral

singing.

In addition to supporting the assembly during hymns,

responses, and acclamations, the St. Mary Cathedral choir

sings additional choral pieces at 11 a.m. Masses on

Sundays, Holy Days, and other occasions during the

“choir season,” September–June. At Mass, these pieces

are often at Offertory and Communion, but occasionally a

choral prelude is sung beforehand. As with all music dur-

ing Liturgy, the purpose of choral singing is to enhance

our worship.

Choral pieces are selected with many of the same consid-

erations as hymns (see the June 7 bulletin for more on that

topic). In some instances, the text of a choral composition

quotes or paraphrases the readings for a particular week.

Other times, choral pieces with a seasonal or more general

focus are programmed. Most of the pieces sung at Com-

munion have a strong Eucharistic theme.

In addition, choral pieces need to match the voices in a

choir and the available practice time. For example, our

choir usually sings pieces with two, three, or four voice

parts (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). However, some

pieces are written for six or eight parts; those pieces are

often a stretch for a choir of 20-some voices and may not

be possible if the lowest note happens to be lower than the

men can sing or higher than the women are comfortable

reaching.

Thankfully, we are blessed to have a sizable library of

choral music to select from. The library has been devel-

oped over the choir’s long history, and it ranges from an-

cient chant works to pieces composed within our life-

times. Some pieces have organ accompaniment supporting

the vocal parts while others are sung a capella – with

voices only.

Since so many choral pieces are needed over the course of

a season (typically 80-90), some pieces are revisited regu-

larly – standards of sorts. Occasionally, new pieces are

added to challenge the singers or to introduce new texts,

themes, or settings. Choir members are dedicated and rise

to the challenge of using their talents in this way.

Although the choir has been on a long hiatus in response

to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have faith that our world

will eventually be safe enough to sing together again in

close proximity. During this absence from singing, you

are invited to consider and pray about whether you may be

called to join us. The Cathedral choir family would be

pleased to welcome new members when we are able to

reconvene.

Feel free to reach out via email at:

[email protected] if you have any questions or

comments. Stay well.
