What is a bride looking for on the lead up to her wedding day? The occasional glass of wine and well behaved bridesmaids? Maybe, but she may also be looking at a way to achieve high levels of health in order to not only handle the stress but thrive. To both look and feel her best on the day she has been dreaming about (and scrap booking, we all know the truth) since she was a little girl. Let’s start at the beginning; what is good health? Good health is when (not if!) there are stresses placed on the body, and the body can cope without difficulty. There are three different types of stress; physical, chemical and emotional. Physical stresses may include over-doing it at the gym in order to fit the dress, lack of sleep, and wearing high heels. Chemical stress includes overindulgent food, alcohol and medication, to name a few. Emotional stresses include, well, I don’t need to tell a bride to be about emotional stresses! When these stresses start to add up, an unhealthy body is unable to adapt and symptoms start to show.

Visiting your local Chiropractor is a great start to getting our bodies back into balance. Chiropractic focuses on the spine, and through the spine, the nervous system. If there is interference to the nervous system through poor spinal alignment the brain cannot communicate with the body so it just can’t work the way it is supposed to. Like trying to make a phone call with static on the line and the message can’t get through, and all of a sudden you’ve got fluoro orange bridesmaid dresses rather than the coral you really wanted! A wide variety of health conditions, as well as posture, can be assisted through Chiropractic. Chiropractors help the body to work better. Your local Chiropractor is also a great source of a wide variety of information regarding all aspects of health. Brides are concerned with diet, exercise and posture when they want to

get the most out of their hen’s night, the wedding day, and the honeymoon. For example; - When shopping at your local supermarket, have you ever

noticed that the fresh food is kept all together on one side? The closer the food is to the way it was as nature intended, the better. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and wholegrains are what fed our bodies as we were evolving, but the processed and sugar loaded foods that fill the aisles our bodies don’t know how to cope with. This can lead to chemical stress, and poor health.

- Movement is life. The best exercise is doing an activity that you love. Don’t make exercise a chore, or you won’t stick to it. Exercise can be enjoyable, whether it is a dance class, and team sport or getting outside for backyard footy with the family.

- Posture is something everybody notices. Have a look at some old photos of yourself. Do your shoulders line up? Does your head tilt to one side? Are you round shouldered or sway backed? These posture imbalances can all be caused by spinal misalignments. Your Chiropractor is able to see these imbalances and determine the underlying cause. Standing up tall can instantly make you look slimmer, healthier and more confident. Get checked by your Chiropractor so that you can look back at your wedding day photos to a perfectly balanced posture.

We all know that true beauty starts on the inside, and is a reflection of our health. But why wait for an occasion such as your wedding day to start taking care of yourself? And why let it stop after the honeymoon? Talk to your local Chiropractor today to see how getting checked can benefit you and your newly formed family.

From fuelling your body with the best foods to implementing weight loss supplements, Mass-Nutrition Mackay will not only help by recommending the best products for you but offer advice with nutritional and exercise plans and ideas.

Owner Carissa Cockings said there’s a perception that supplement stores are only for bodybuilders, but, that’s not the case, they cater to everyone.

“We have our very own women’s line, Miss Nutrition, which has a whole range of products specifically targeted to us lovely ladies,” Ms Cockings said.

“I know how important it is to look and feel good when posing for photos let alone being photographed on one of the biggest days of your life,” she said.

“To help get you where you want to be we have devised a Bridal Stack which includes three key products that will get you in shape and losing weight.”

BRiDAL PACKAGe:BODY EFFECTS FAT BURNER: This product is an excellent pre-workout fat burning product that contains 14 active ingredients to assist with increasing energy levels, reducing your appetite and enhancing your mood. It comes in great fruity flavours and can be used as a pre-workout or daily as a general fat burner.

BNRG PROTO-WHEY WPI: Hydrolyzed whey protein isolate that contains 4g of fat and 4g of carbohydrates. It is a great post-workout protein shake for recovery following a training session or during the day as a snack. Tip: Mix 1 scoop with some Greek yoghurt for a delicious, chocolaty (and guilt-free) snack!

AMINOLOGIC L-CARNITINE: This product is used pre-workout to assist the body to utilise your fat stores more efficiently as energy during a workout. Mix this one with your Body Effects fat burner for optimal results. It is also great for recovery, you will have less pain, soreness and feel more energised!

Look and feel great on your big day!The team at Mass-Nutrition Mackay know how important it is to feel and look great, that’s why they want to help local brides-to-be achieve their ‘dream’ wedding figure.

Protein is #1 for weight loss: protein helps you to reduce body fat. Try to consume a lean source of protein every 3 hours during the day; this will

keep your metabolism firing equalling weight loss!

When wanting to look glowing and gorgeous for our big day, we focus solely on the exterior. We head to the beauty clinics and have all manner of treatments; scrubs, microdermabrasion, peels, maybe botox or even surgery. But chances are, if we focused on the inside first, there may be less of a need for some of those more drastic measures!

Food warriors contain vitamins, antioxidants, fatty acids and plenty more goodies to help fight the fight against sun damage, aging, poor health and will get you on the road to a more healthy and beautiful you, just in time for your big day. Read on to find out which warriors you need in your life.

Wrinkle Warrior: FlaxseedsThe health benefits of flaxseeds are seemingly boundless, with lowering cholesterol, aiding weight loss and boosting immune

systems just a few examples of its power. The essential fatty acids found in flaxseeds help keep your skin hydrated and smooth in appearance.

sun Warrior: Almonds Another food packed full with hero attributes, almonds are a great source of vitamins and antioxidants. Rich in Vitamin E, they will help defend against sun damage. Containing a healthy serving of mono unsaturated fat, vitamin E, protein, fibre, potassium, magnesium and iron, they are a great food to have in your bag as a daily snack.

Breakout Warrior: CarrotsPacked with a myriad of goodies including Vitamin A and beta-carotenes (these elements beneficial for protecting your vision, in particular your ability to see well in dim lighting conditions)

Food WarriorsFight towards good health and beauty, starting from the inside.

Page 9: Isaac Weddings - April 2013

carrots are the food to choose if prone to breakouts. The Vitamin A will assist in preventing an overproduction of cells in the skin's outer layer. This means fewer dead cells to combine with sebum and clog pores.

Parched Warrior: safflower OilSafflower Oil contains omega-6 fatty acids which are the ultimate fighting tool against dry, flaky or itchy skin. Safflower oil mimics the naturally occurring lipids in human skin and the fatty acids keep cell walls supple, allowing water to better penetrate the epidermis. A great choice in moisturiser for any skin type, and possibly even helpful for those suffering irritated skin conditions such as eczema.

Cancer Warrior: Green TeaGreen tea contains significant amounts of catechin, an antioxidant with proven anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Drinking

green tea can help prevent a number of cancers, including skin cancer and may also reverse effects of sun damage. Note: Green tea contains caffeine, so drink in moderation or opt for the decaffeinated version.

sun Warrior #2 : Dark ChocolateWe simply had to add this last one in. Flavonols, the antioxidants found in chocolate can reduce roughness in the skin, provide sun protection, lower stress levels, reduce your risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels. It’s a win win in our books!Note: While flavonol is in all chocolate, dark chocolate contains the highest and healthiest amount. So unless you love the slighty bitter taste of dark chocolate, this won’t be for everyone!

Naturally BeautifulPamper yourself with natural skin treatments for a beautiful wedding day glow.

So you've worked on the inside and set the food warriors to work, now continue the fight with a few delicious at home skin treatments that will make you sparkle and shine. We've listed just three, but head to our website www.isaacweddings.com.au where we've shared a few more for you to try. Please, share your feedback and let us know which one you loved the most!

Papaya and Pineapple – For a soft and smooth complexion

150g of fresh papaya, 150g of fresh pineapple and 1 Tbsp of honey is all you'll

need for this simple mask. Place diced papaya and pineapple in blender and

blend until you get a thick consistency. Transfer to a bowl, add the honey

and mix well. Apply the paste in a circular motion to your face. Leave on for

10 – 15 minutes, then remove with cold water.

Banana, Almond and Yoghurt – Radiance and even skin tone

You'll need two medium bananas, 5 almonds powdered and 50g natural

yoghurt. Place the bananas and yoghurt in blender and blend until you get a

thick slimy consistency. Transfer to a bowl and add the powdered almonds.

Apply mask and leave for 5 – 7 minutes. Remove with cold water.

Note: If you are prone to oily skin, omit the powdered almonds.

Avocado and Honey – Oily Skin

You'll need 1 avocado and 1 Tbsp of honey. Scoop the flesh of the avocado

and mash to a thick pulp. Add the honey and mix well. Cleanse face with

lukewarm water before you apply mask. Apply gently on face and neck and

leave for 8 – 10 minutes. Remove with cold water.

our day

Ruth and Dan celebrated their marriage with a reception in their backyard, and they did it in

style! Simplistic touches were key, strings of lights overhead, roses in small metal jugs and bowls of punch on white wicker tables. Chairs and tables dotted here and there allowed guests to mingle

and created an intimate feel to the day.

And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that incredible cheese wheel cake!

Holly and Erle, tell us how you met.We met at a mutual friend’s BBQ and we know it sounds cliché... but it really was love at first sight.

And the proposal?Holly: We went out to dinner and after we’d finished dessert, Erle “dropped” a spoon off the table. He bent down, and when I looked over, he was on one knee holding out a beautiful ring.He asked, I said yes and all the other diners clapped for us. It was amazing!

We know things don’t always go according to plan, and in your case this couldn’t be more true. Tell us about the lead up to your wedding.Erle: We’d set the date for 28th September 2012. We’d organised the venue, caterers, flowers decorations... everything. We had planned on approximately 80 guests and a budget of $28,000. Then around December 2011, things took a turn for the worse. Holly had some serious health problems that required major surgery and needless to say “minor” issues, such as a wedding, were put on hold indefinitely. Thankfully, given the situation, most of our suppliers returned our deposits, for which we were very grateful.

In July 2012, after many operations, we decided there was no point in waiting until things became easier, so we set a new date, 27th October 2012. This time, we limited everything; guests, time and budget. So with careful planning, we organised a wedding for just 14 guests on a $5000 budget, and it was a wonderful occasion.

And for this reason, your reception was held in your own backyard, and looked magical! Was it easy to achieve?Holly: I used a bit of everything that I love, and after very careful planning, it all just worked together. It was perfect!

Holly, we loved your dress, it was perfect for a beach ceremony, tell us about your choice.Well, after everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong, I had no wedding dress right up to the day before the wedding. Then walking past Myer that afternoon, I saw THE dress, there was only one and it was my size! It was meant to be!

Can you tell us what your favourite part of the day was?Erle: Turning around to see my soon to be wife walking down the aisle towards me in the most amazing dress.Holly: The entire day, it was truly a dream come true. Everything turned out so much more incredible than I could have ever imagined it to be.

Is there anything you would change? Were there any hiccups during the day?Holly: Once the ceremony began, everything was perfect. The stresses and things that had gone wrong earlier didn’t matter anymore. I wouldn’t change a thing!

How does it feel to be married?Holly and Erle: I married my soul mate.

See? We said you would fall a little in love. The team at Isaac thank Holly and Erle for sharing a little of their magical day with us and we wish them good health and happiness for their future together.

Well, the team at Isaac fell a little in love with this couple and we think you will too. It hasn’t been the easiest of journeys for them, but they ended up creating a wedding day that exceeded both their dreams. Meet our cover couple, Holly and Erle.

We asked and you answered! Some weeks ago, we asked our readers which were the best beaches in the region to be married on. Thank you for all your emails, messages and comments, which included some amazingly romantic engagement and wedding stories, ones we hope to share with you all in the near future. The voting was unanimous and you all named both the “Capes” as your top beaches. But there were others that came close behind and for very good reasons. Here are the top five as voted by you, our readers.

CAPe HiLLsBOROuGHJust a 20 minute drive from Mackay, the main beach at Cape Hillsborough is a wide low beach, and at 2km long, has plenty of room for all your guests! Beautiful rain-forest borders and spectacular views from every angle means this beach is a favourite of many. Nearby Old Station Teahouse would be the ideal setting for your reception. Note: Depending on what time of day your wedding is, be prepared for some extra guests on the beach in the form of wallabies!

CAPe GLOuCesTeRForty minutes north of Airlie Beach lies, by all accounts, one of the most stunning beaches in the region. Boasting beautiful white sands and views to die for, this beach and its surroundings offer a beautifully secluded setting for your day. Once you hit the dirt track on your way to the Cape, look to your right... the view is simply breathtaking! There are two resorts nearby, Monte’s and Cape Gloucester Eco-Resort, so your ceremony, photos and reception can all be in the one location!

AiRLie BeACHIf sand between your toes isn’t your idea of romantic but you still want the beachy feel, then the Whitsunday Pavilion in Airlie Beach might just be the perfect place. With a thatched roof lending a tropical feel, protection from the sun and a view of the Whitsundays behind it, there’s not much wrong with this option! Not to mention, you and your guests will be spoiled for choice with restaurants, resorts and accommodation.

Our Best Beaches

Locals Choice

sHOAL POiNTThis is definitely a beach wedding that the bridal party and guests should wear their thongs to, but forgoing fashion in favour of comfort will most definitely be worth it! Turn left before you reach the main beach and follow the dirt road until it turns into sand, or park further back under the trees and wander your way along till you reach this secluded part of the beach, with spectacular views, for an intimate and natural beach wedding. Beautiful tree arches and amazing driftwood make for some stunning backdrops for photos.

LAMBeRTs BeACH, sLADe POiNTOn the grass overlooking the sand and waves, in the shade of the trees; up high on the lookout; or nestled in amongst the dramatic dark rocks below, there are multiple options for your ceremony and photos when it comes to Lamberts Beach. It’s not a placid location like some of the others, the wind can pick up and the waves can crash, but that’s all part of what makes this beach unique and special. The nearby playground could come in extremely useful for some of those less interested little guests and maybe for some fun photos!

Editor’s ChoiceHORsesHOe BAY, BOWeNWe couldn’t leave it at just five, as we think this beach deserves a mention and it’s also our editor’s pick! This tiny crescent of sand, surrounded by the most amazing rock formations and boasting magical sunrises, would be the ideal setting for a sunrise wedding. Or any time of day for that matter! With Coral Cove Apartments, Horseshoe Bay Resort and Whitsunday Sands Resort right next door, there’s accommodation to suit every budget and all within walking distance to this little gem of a beach.

Do you know of a beach in the region that we’ve never heard of? We’d love you to tell us about it and why it’s so special to you. email us at [email protected]

Soft mushroom pinks, creams, pearls and lace were all part of Sarah and Luke’s elegant vintage themed day.

Favour boxes filled with tea bags, homemade macadamia and white chocolate biscuits, and a CD with the couple’s favourite songs on it, were just one of the many personal

touches in their wedding. A special team of people helped with their day; the wedding cake was decorated by Sarah’s mother and the sweets buffet was also created

by her and Sarah’s wonderful friends.

What began as a home business grew in popularity and outgrew its walls! As a result, the delicious Frosted Delights Cakery in Northern Beaches opened its doors to the public on the 20th October 2012.

Chantel Potter is an enterprising and extremely busy lady, so we were grateful she took a few minutes out of her day to answer our questions about the sugary delights that make up her days.

Chantel, how have the first few months of business been? Big and busy! It's been a big learning experience and very busy with wedding, birthday, corporate and wholesale cake orders. It's been great.

Do you hold cake tastings for prospective clients? Yes, we do. Our next tasting is on Saturday, 10th April at 10am. If you head to our Facebook page, you will find the event. Join and come along!

As gluten free diets are becoming more common these days, do you have gluten free options available?Yes, we do offer gluten free options and also have options that are dairy, egg and sugar free. We try to cater for everyone and encourage clients to come in and talk to us about their requirements. We're happy to try and accommodate everyone.

Do you deliver your cakes to the reception venue? Yes, we deliver and set up our cakes at the venue, all part of our service!

What is the biggest trend you are seeing in wedding cakes this season?Trends at the moment are simple, clean lines, nothing too over the top. But I’m also getting alot of requests for the soft ruffles cake, which is a very romantic style.

For brides-to-be, how far in advance of their wedding do you recommend them booking with you?Honestly? As early as possible! Get in early, as dates can book up very quickly in the wedding season.

Thanks to Chantel for her time and we wish her continuing success at Frosted Delights Cakery.

Rebecca has provided us with a step-by-step process of how she achieves a flawless finish for your special day. She has also included some handy tips to help make your day run smoothly.

2-3 MONTHs BeFORe YOuR WeDDiNG DAYYou need to implement a cleansing, toning and moisturising routine for your skin. Good skin doesn’t happen over night and if you want to be blemish free for your wedding day you need to be vigilant and start early. Remember to exfoliate once or twice a week and if you can, treat yourself to a facial every now and then.

1 MONTH BeFORe YOuR WeDDiNG DAYHave your eyebrows professionally shaped so that only a tidy up is required before your wedding day.

2 DAYs BeFORe YOuR WeDDiNG DAYHave your eyebrows tidied and organise a touch-up kit to keep your makeup looking fresh on the day (touch-up kits are available for clients to purchase) and elect a bridesmaid or family member to look after it on the day.

MORNiNG OF YOuR WeDDiNG DAYCleanse and exfoliate your skin, making sure you exfoliate your lips as well (you don’t want your lipstick or gloss to flake or go clumpy); follow with your toner and moisturiser, moisturising down to your collarbone. Wear a button up shirt so that it is easy to remove after your makeup is done, you’ll avoid messing up your hair and potentially ruining your beautiful makeup.

1. I apply the eye makeup first, just in case any fallout from the eyeshadow lands underneath the eye. This means I can tidy it up without the risk of ruining the foundation. I also colour and define the eyebrows as this gives the makeup a very polished look.

2. I airbrush any blemishes or imperfections to create an even skintone then airbrush a light coat of foundation over the entire face. Because I have concealed the imperfections, I don’t need a heavy foundation as I don’t want to give the skin that ‘cakey’ look.

3. The next step is contouring, highlighting and applying blush. Our model Stevie has quite a defined face so little contouring was needed. I airbrushed the blush onto the cheekbones and highlighted above the blush. I also like to highlight the section beneath the nostrils that connects to the lips as that makes the top lip look fuller.

4. I chose shades of lipliner and lipstick that were very close to Stevie’s natural lip colour as I didn’t want her lips to overshadow her eye makeup.

5. My final step was to airbrush a topcoat over her entire face to set her makeup so it doesn’t budge.

What you need to do...

I did it, I am married! I can now speak from experience, and happily say, our wedding was the best day of my life. We had planned this for just over a year and many of you reading this will be beginning your wedding planning journey too, so I hope this helps! Being a bridal wear designer, born from the passion to help brides be beautiful on a budget, I felt extra pressure to have a pretty spectacular wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses on our big day, without breaking the bank.

The bride demands perfection on her wedding day, and even though many feel the bride should be the feature, I wanted nothing less for my bridesmaids too. I chose soft peach for my reasonably priced bridesmaid dresses from BLU Wedding Boutique, in a halter neck style which is very flattering on any figure, and knee length with shabby chic chiffon for a romantic floaty effect. I considered the important aspect of what the dresses would photograph like when making this choice, and was not disappointed. The dresses were matched with plain nude coloured heels so they didn’t detract from the glitzy gowns, and these were purchased for $39. The brides dress should not only be pleasing to the eyes but it should enhance and accentuate the bride’s beauty and style as well. Draping across my stomach and lower back hid any bumps, perfect for feeling confident and comfortable with everyone looking at me.

The overall theme of our wedding was “rustic”, suited to our country barn venue, decorated with objects from our family history or items passed down to us. We had family members contribute including, the Groom’s Father with a 1950’s Land Cruiser that he and other family restored, Grandma’s bike she rode to work on, old family wedding photos from each set of

parents and grandparents, and a basket of dress ups for the photo booth from the Bride’s Mother’s vintage collection.

We chose to put our money into the spectacular venue with a breath taking view (elevated looking over to the jagged mountain scape), food (our appreciation for cuisine was maximised after our time living in Europe), wine (after my time as a travelling winemaker), and entertainment (100 guests listening to acoustics in the ceremony, and dancing the night away to a live band). The feedback blew our minds, and guests raved it was the best wedding they had been to.

BLU Wedding Boutique was created because I believe you can look a million dollars on your day. Follow BLU Wedding Boutique to see our fairy tale unfold!

Once upon a time, a boy met a girl. Then the boy courted the girl. An engagement soon followed, then a wedding and the boy and girl moved into their first home together. Wedding gifts were beautiful and practical; dinner sets, cutlery, toaster, jug and linen.

These days, the order in which these events occur might not be quite the same! So when it comes to choosing a wedding gift for a couple who have already lived together for some time, it can prove to be a somewhat difficult task. And for the couple who already have everything, fitting three toasters into their cupboard can also prove difficult!

But there is hope; because with the new trends of living, there are new trends in gift giving. For couples-to-be and potential gift givers... read on!

Many couples choose the option of a wishing well at their reception, where wedding guests can leave a gift of money to the newlyweds. Often times, the wedding invitation will inform you of this and the couple will advise that your gift will be put towards something significant, such as their honeymoon.

Gift registries are not a new invention but they are definitely growing in popularity with many gift and homeware shops now offering a gift registry service. Generally the couple will list a variety of items in all price ranges so that there will be a perfect gift to suit your budget. This service is fantastic, it takes the guessing game stress away and you know for certain you have purchased something the couple love.

Another great option offered by some businesses, L’Amour Home being one such business, is a wedding registry afternoon tea. The bride, her friends and family gather together in the store, indulge in coffee and cake and peruse the beautiful gifts. The friends contribute towards a gift certificate for the lucky couple to spend within the store.

So there you have it; options for the couples and perhaps suggestions for gift givers to pass on to them! And remember, it never hurts to ask the couple themselves what they would like, after all if they’ve been together long enough, their toaster just might need replacing! Happy shopping, however you do it.

As is expected, when we become engaged, our focus is solely on the wedding, the big day, the grand event. Many of us forget to think very far beyond that day, to what married life, with all its ups and downs can entail. So to find out, we thought we’d take a little waltz down memory lane, with a delightful couple by the name of Jim and Patricia Coburn.

Jim and Patricia are life long locals of Mackay, with Jim being born in Mackay in 1938. Patricia was also born in 1938, in Brisbane. They have been kind enough to share with us some memories of their impressive 53 year marriage and life together.

Jim and Patricia first met at Mackay Intermediate School (now Mackay Central State School) in 1950. They had similar interests in sport. Both played hockey and enjoyed skating which was where they first starting going together. Jim and one

of his friends would escort Pat home after a night’s skating, a regular occurrence for several months, until the first night of the Mackay Show. Patricia went with several of her girlfriends and Jim with two of his friends, and at the end of that night Pat finally agreed to go to a movie with him on their push bikes.

Much of Jim and Patricia’s courting was spent, as it was in those days, riding their bikes everywhere; to sport, to Marian Falls, swimming at Eimeo beach and Mackay Harbour. Eventually Jim purchased a share in a 1953 FJ Holden with his elder brother and sister, or drove his father’s ute.

After going together for 5 years, Pat said to Jim “1960 is a leap year, so I think it’s time we got married”, to which Jim agreed and tells us he has been doing so ever since!

Jim & Patricia 6 February 1960

Page 41: Isaac Weddings - April 2013

41

Pat and Jim were married in the Mackay Presbyterian Church on Macalister Street on the 6th February , 1960 at 2pm and the reception was in the Church of England Parish Hall.

Pat had her sister Lorna and Jim’s sister Ruth as bridesmaids and Jim had his friend Vic as best man and another friend, Bryson, as groomsman. Pat wore a white satin wedding gown overlaid with chiffon, and bridesmaids Lorna and Ruth wore apricot chiffon over apricot satin dresses. The ladies carried artificial bouquets.

The wedding day went smoothly. According to Jim, the women took many hours to pretty themselves up (nothing has changed there then!) while he worked until 12.30pm, got dressed, got married and was back at work at 7am the very next morning! (Some things have definitely changed!) As he tells us; that was how it was then, lucky to have a job.

Patricia and Jim after they were married, lived in rented accommodation until they built the first of two homes, the second one in Ooralea being the family home for 37 years. They have two children, Trevor and Susan and 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

And we end with some very wise words from Jim.

“The secret to a long marriage is to be able to talk about any troubles, have good friends, and be happy with what you, have not what you would like to have. And do almost everything your wife requests.”
