After some chatter she asked me, "What do you do?" I responded, "I am a Rabbi." "Where?" the person asked. "Wise Temple." "For how long?" "I am finishing my sixth year here," I proudly told her. "That is terrific; she said, "We have been members for decades. I am glad to meet you." I too was glad to meet her even though it was during my last months serving this most precious of congregations. Not only was I glad to meet her, I have been privi- leged to come to know so many of you who make up the Wise Temple family. At this time, I am conflicted. For there is sadness in my heart at the same time there is excitement in my soul. Those two never balance well. The sadness is caused because of the love and friendship, the sharing of sorrows and the celebrating of joys that we have come to know with one another. These are moments none of us will forget and will be forever etched in our minds. Of course, sadness is the price that is exacted when one loves and cares deeply and then moves on. My sadness is found in the idea that I am leaving a place that has become my home and so I am leaving my "family." At the same time, I am excited of course, for the new opportunities that lie ahead. They present me with great challenges that I look forward to confronting. Being a Rabbi is filled with wonder and joy, confusion and difficulty - but most of all - it is simply an honor. It is an honor to enter people's lives in the most critical of times. I have been so honored by serving you during these last six years. Your graciousness and warmth, your ability to learn as I taught and to teach as I learned, your willingness to allow me to become one of your Rabbis is a blessing that will stay with me for the rest of my life. In 1995, when Plum Street Temple was being renovated and was closed down, I was ordained at the beautiful synagogue known as "Music Hall." While I was not ordained a rabbi at Plum Street Temple, I became a Rabbi at Wise Temple. For this privilege I am eternally grateful. My six years here will last a lifetime within my soul and heart. I will take what I have gained and learned and apply it in all that I do and in all that I am. From the commitment of social justice, to the dedication of being a welcoming congregation for those of all ages and backgrounds, to the sacred task of educating ourselves in the roots of our Tradition, to sharing in life's most precious and most painful moments, these all helped me be who I am as a man and as a Rabbi. My thanks goes to so many, from you the laity, to the lay leadership, to our won- derful staff here at Wise Temple to my friend, partner and colleague, Rabbi Kamrass, I am more thankful than words could express. I know too, that you will allow your new Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Rayna Gevurtz, to indeed become your rabbi as well. I wish her and you the many blessings I have come to know in my six years at this "K.K.", this Holy Congregation. May each of us go from strength to strength.

Several weeks ago, I was waiting for a seat in a local restaurant when some else waiting struck up a conversation with me. After some chatter she asked me, "What do you do?"

I responded, "I am a Rabbi." "Where?" the person asked. "Wise Temple." "For how long?" "I am finishing my sixth year here," I proudly told her. "That is terrific; she said, "We have been members for decades. I am glad to meet

you." I too was glad to meet her even though it was during my last months serving this

most precious of congregations. Not only was I glad to meet her, I have been privileged to come to know so many of you who make up the Wise Temple family. At this time, I am conflicted. For there is sadness in my heart at the same time there is excitement in my soul. Those two never balance well. WISE TEMPLE APPOINTS RABBINIC INTERN

In response to increasing programs, Congregational growth, and more activity, Wise Temple is pleased to announce that we have created a new part-time position of Rabbinic Intern. Beginning next month, Michael Shulman, a rabbinic student at Hebrew Union College, wi" make Wise Temple his "student pulpit," an arrangement that will enable him to join Rabbi Kamrass and the new Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Gevurtz, in teaching and leading services. The Rabbinic Intern will assist the Rabbis in teaching in our Confirmation Class, work with our Youth Director, Brett Stern, in leading several retreats for our students throughout the year, teach several adult education classes, teach in our Gesher program, and assist in leading services during the course of his internship.

Michael Shulman is a fourth year rabbinic student at Hebrew Union College, and a native of Cleveland. He grew up in a large, active Reform Congregation and worked as a rabbinic intern there for one year before entering HUC. He has also served a student pulpit in Marion, Ohio for the last two years. Michael is a graduate of Georgetown University and in addition to his rabbinic studies at HUC, is pursuing a masters in education at Xavier University.

We look forward to welcoming Michael Shulman to our staff and to the ways in which he will enhance our Congregational life with the programs, classes, and services that he will lead. We know that he wi" have a wonderful experience in the year to come at Wise Temple, and that he will be warmly welcomed in our Congregational Family.

"Wise Temple has always been an important part of my life. Each year my family and I sit down and discuss which Wise-Up volunteer projects we would like to participate in. Through Wise Temple, we get a chance to give back to the community when it would otherwise be more difficult to do so on an individual basis. Wise Temple has helped me grow and become a better person. The Wise-Up program showed me that volunteering can be fun and rewarding and is something that I will continue to do as I grow older."

"There are so many special memories I have of Wise Temple. Through the years, it has been a place of self-fulfillment. From the primary grades, to senior year, I have learned about others and myself. Making latkes, having the mock wedding, preparing to become a Bar Mitzvah, have been some of my fondest memories at Wise. I have become a stronger person and more responsible Jew because of Wise Temple." -Jon Monger

"Recently, while walking to second class at Sunday night school, I paused at the 1987 consecration picture hanging on the wall. I'm standing on the edge, hiding behind my hair, (which has never been hard to do). Quiet and shy and crying in the corner was how I spent my year in the Open Room. I'd like to think I've come a long way since then. But, perhaps in a sense I am still on the edge. I've never been deeply involved with youth group or even extremely sociable at Hebrew High School. I've been too shy -.r too busy. And yet after all these years thanks to my friends, family, teachers, and rabbis, Wise Temple has come to feel like a

)me to me. So maybe I have grown and changed. After coming here every Sunday morning for the past thirteen years, first as student then as a teacher, I know that is a place where I belong. I treasure my memories of consecration, religious school, Bar

.:md Bat Mitzvah's, Confirmation, Shabbat services, holidays, and now graduation, which I share with my Wise Temple community." -Zoe Tarshis

"In reflecting on my experiences as a member of the Wise Temple community, from my first day as a student in the Open Room to graduation, I feel my most meaningful contribution has been as a teaching assistant in the Open Room. I have spent 4 years helping in the Open Room and I have enjoyed the experience a lot. Towards the end of 8th grade when I signed up to be a Madrich, I just assumed that I would be assigned to my mom's first grade class. When I received my assignment to the Open Room, I was at first a little skeptical about how I would like it, but it turned out that it was a great place for me. I am proud that I have helped many young children learn about their Jewish identity and also helped them grow as people."
