For many years field instruments have beeninstalled and connected to the control system inthe same way because “that’s the way it’s alwaysbeen done.” With recent technological and designadvances this no longer needs to be the case. Thisprogram will take a typical grass roots projectwith 12,500 I/O and examine various ways todramatically reduce the cost of field installationsthrough optimized hardware selection, reducedengineering, design and construction. Thespeakers are:
Mark Murphy, Director of ControlSystems Engineering, Fluor, has more than 35
years of experience with Fluor on refinery, petrochemical, power generation, and other
projects. He isresponsible fordirecting theengineering, design, specification, andselection of instru-mentation and controlsystems, and forensuring that theoverall design of thecontrol system meets
the client’s expectations and requirements. Hehas a BS in Chemical Engineering fromBrigham Young University.

Join a technicalcommittee; keep upto date Joining an ISA committee is a great wayof keeping yourself up-to-date with the latestISA standards changes. Choose from a list ofcommittees relating to your industries. There are two types of membership statusfor each ISA committee: voting members andinformation members. Voting members areresponsible for attending meetings, communicating with the chairpersons, andcommenting on draft standards. Informationmembers receive committee mailings andmay submit draft comments, but they do notvote. To join and to see a list of availablecommittees, visit https://www.isa.org/forms/join-a-standards-committee. For example, I’m currently enrolled asan Information Member on Control ValvesTesting, Valve actuators, and Valve sizing. Asa result, I receive updates on potentialchanges and on new standards relating to thisindustry prior to the official release. Just last month, I learned of at least threedrafts standards in development in the valveindustries including ISA-96.02.01, Guidelinesfor the Specification of Electric ValveActuators, ISA-75.08.05, and ISA-75.08.08,both relating to face to face dimensions ofvalves. As a reminder, current members can viewmost ISA standards, Recommended Practice, and Technical Reports free at https://www.isa.org/standards-and-publications/isa-standards/member-access-to-standards/ afteryou login. Due to copyright restrictions, thisbenefit is for individual member use only. For more information, please conatctEddie Chau at (949) 835-8052 [email protected].
Professional Advancement Message from the DVPHappy Holidays! I hope you have the
opportunity to share some good meals and qualitytime with family andfriends this holidayseason. In SouthernCalifornia the shorterdaylight time, the crispcold nights, the smell ofwood burning infireplaces, and theimmediate need to wearpants and shoes insteadof shorts and sandalswhile doing yard workon a Saturday morningmake it clear that we are
in Autumn, soon to be inWinter, and soon we willbe starting a new year.
Over the last fouryears I have had theprivilege and honor ofserving ISA as District 11Vice President-elect, andlater as District 11 VicePresident. My term asDistrict Vice presidentends this year. StartingJanuary 1, 2016 Jeff Bluecurrent District 11 VicePresident- Elect will bestarting his two year termas District 11 VP. JeffBlue brings with him apassion for ISA and itsvision, 40 years’ experience in the automationindustry holding various roles; he is currentlyEngineering Manager at Southern Las VegasWater Authority, has been a member of ISA for25 years and is an ISA Certified AutomationProfessional. It has been a pleasure getting toknow and work with Jeff over the years. I amconfident that Jeff Blue will be a great DVP, andif you know him I am sure you do too.
Almost 2 years ago during Peggy Coonsterm as society President, a new initiative wasstarted to rethink the strategic goals of ISA, andmake investments to support the new strategicgoals. A specialist assisted the leaders attendingthe meetings at the FLM, and SLM in formingthe new strategic goals. One of the first questionsthat was asked at the initial meeting wassomething to the extent of: Who is Automation? ,If you are reading this you have probably formedyour own thoughts in your mind. Engineers,Technicians, Sales Rep Companies, Research
and Development, Manufacturers, Stu-dents,…. as you can see the list is endless.Automation is everywhere. The process ofcoming up with the strategic goals wasenlightening, you have Automation profession-als in different capacities, from different partsof the world, different experience levels, and inthat room everyone is united as volunteers inISA currently coming together to create thestrategic goals for the society. I encourage youto checkout ISA’s new website layout and readabout the 5 strategic goals www.isa.org .Below is ISA’s Vision and the 5 Strategicgoals: Content, Data, Coolest Delivery, CyberSecurity, and Advocacy.
There is still work to be done, however
overall ISA is making progress in implement-ing the strategic goals so that they bringoptimum value to its members and theautomation industry.
I want to thank all of the volunteers indistrict 11 for working with Jeff Blue and Iover the last couple years in making district 11meet requirements for maintaining activesections, encouraging and attending leadermeetings, bringing value to its members, andall that while having fun. All of the tradeshows, golf tournaments, technical presenta-tions, educational seminars, holiday dinners, etc. bring the network of automation profes-sionals together allowing us to share ideas, andget to know each other.
Although my term as DVP is ending Iwill still be around ISA. Best Regards Rafael Agrazsanchez ISA District 11 Vice President 2014-2015
