Introduction The Environdata 10 metre instrument mast (Part# IS37) is designed to mount wind speed and wind direction sensors at a height of ten metres above the ground, to satisfy EPA Requirements and Australian Standards. The mast is a tilt down type and includes a winch which means easy installation and easy raising and lowering for sensor maintenance purposes. The Environdata 10 metre mast has a maximum load bearing capacity of 5kg total, including the cross arm, sensors and sensor cables.

The mast must not be installed in windy conditions or in an any manner contrary to this handbook or the warranty will be void.

Please use this handbook in conjunction with your site specific and job specific Risk Assessments and develop and implement your Safe Work Method Statements accordingly. As each site, job and organisation has different requirements for maintaining site safety the risks must be identified and managed to on a per-job basis by the installation team.

IMPORTANT: Any excavation work, (including holes or trenches) must be done in accordance with required safety precautions, including Dial Before You Dig.

If unsure, do NOT proceed.

1.0 Equipment and Parts Needed

1.1 Parts List

Refer to CERTIFICATE OF INSPECTION for parts included in the kit.

1.2 Footings

Two options exist for the guy rope attachment point footings:

1) Concrete footings (Fitting kit included as standard)

2) Duckbill Anchors (Included if requested at time of order)

[NOTE: Star pickets have previously been used by clients as an option for temporary installations or in instances where the use of concrete footings or Duckbill Anchors is not possible.

If Star Pickets are used as guy wire anchors the mast is not certified. Moreover, the pickets may move leading to premature mast failure.

Under no circumstances does Environdata or its agents recommend the use of star pickets as guy wire footings. If you use star pickets as guy wire footings the Environdata Warranty is VOID and any incidental or consequential damage is solely your responsibility.]

1.3 Optional Installation Equipment (Not supplied)

1) Padlock and keys to secure mast - to suit 10 mm diameter hole.

2) A perimeter fence is desirable to protect the system from vandalism, theft and animal interference.

2.0 Site Preparation

Before the installation of your new Environdata Weather Station, the site you have chosen needs to be prepared. If you need assistance in selecting a suitable site, please refer to our weather station siting guide or contact Environdata.

Please also note the site itself should be clear of medium to high vegetation.

2.1 Site selection

The purpose of locating the wind sensors at 10 metres is to make sure that local (ground) effects do not interfere with the measurement of wind speed and direction. This means that the measurements will be representative of the general area, say for 10-20 kilometres. This type of measurement is called ‘Meso’ scale, and is normally necessary for air pollution dust, particulate or spray drift or odour monitoring. The quality of the site will affect the quality of the data.

It is also important to site the mast so that other local effects (trees, buildings etc) do not interfere with the measurements. The optimum is to have all objects ten times their height away. For example, a ten metre tree would be no closer than 100 metres away. In practice, this is normally very difficult to achieve.

A ratio of 4 -7 times would usually be acceptable.

The area should ideally be flat, and reasonably even.

However for difficult areas, or sites with strict conditions imposed, you should consult with Environdata, your environmental consultant and regulatory body to determine what siting you should use and if necessary what variation from the Australian Standards will be acceptable given your particular circumstances.

Any siting variances should be noted on reports to regulatory bodies, or in data provided to modelling consultants etc.

2.2 Orientation

The orientation of the mast should be based on the space available to lower the mast down for service or repair, and the best orientation for the solar panel, as per the site layout in Appendix 2.

It is strongly recommended that the enclosure be fenced off for security reasons - from both humans and stray animals. If you wish to conserve space, you can arrange that the mast is lowered through an entrance gate in the enclosure.

Once you have decided the orientation of the station, you will need to mark out the footings.

2.3 Marking out the site as per Appendix 2: Mast Footing Layout Overview

(N.B. please note the below North South orientations are correct for masts installed in the southern hemisphere, and should be reversed for Northern Hemisphere mast installations).

1. Mark centre-post location with marking paint.

2. Measure an extended line through centre-post mark in the North-South direction, at least 3m in North direction. (Mark the 3m point as Northern guy footing) and 1.5m in the South direction. Mark the 1.5m point in the south direction.

The northern guy footing is placed 3m to the north of the centre post, opposite the line of the direction the mast will be lowered, this means that the upper guy in this direction is the only guy that needs to be completely released prior to lowering the mast for servicing.

3. From the point 1.5m South of the centre-post, mark the North-South line with a perpendicular line, that extends 2.6 metres in both the east and west directions. .

4. Mark each of these positions as the southern pair of guy footings.

5. You should now have the centre post and 3 guy footing positions marked. Important: Double check that they are all 3m from the centre-post. They will also be 120 degrees apart, and measure 5.2m between each consecutive guy footing around the perimeter.

6. Mark the data logger and rain gauge post positions as per the footing layout overview.

7. Draw a line from the rain gauge post to the data logger post. This will be a cable trench.

8. Draw another line from the mast centre post to the data logger post for another cable trench.

2.4 Set Mast Guy Wire Footings

1. The footings for the guy wires that support the 10m mast need to be set in concrete (approx 4 to 5 20kg concrete bags per footing), in the 3 positions indicated on the site layout diagram (Appendix2) as you have marked out in step 2.3 above.

2. Excavate a 450mm x 450mm x 450mm hole - or equivalent volume augured hole with a minimum depth of 300mm – for each guy rope footing.

a. Each footing consists of a 500mm length of M12 threaded rod, (vertical in middle of excavated hole) with a 450mm wide angled footing brace (horizontal on the bottom of the excavated hole.

b. The footing brace is clamped onto the bottom of the threaded rod with the supplied M12 Nuts.

c. The M12 Eye Nut is fixed to the top of the threaded rod with the remaining (pre-threaded) nut tightened against it.

d. Place the footing into the in the centre of the excavated footing, and pour in the mixed concrete. The threaded rod & eye nut should remain exposed from the concrete. Ensure the rod is vertical as the concrete sets.

e. Note the eye nut needs to be screwed on so all the internal thread on the eye nut is fully engaged. Once the guys are attached and the footing set, it cannot undo, even if its clamping nut becomes loose.

2.5 Excavate Mast Footings & Conduit trenches

1. The hole for the centre mast post needs to be excavated. Excavate a 450mm x 450mm x 450mm hole, or equivalent volume augured hole with a minimum diameter of 300mm.

2. The hole for the rain gauge post (ISRG or ISRG2) needs to be excavated. 250mm wide x 450mm deep or equivalent volume augured hole with a minimum diameter of 200mm. Please refer to the site layout diagram.

3. The hole for the data logger post (IS31) needs to be excavated. 250mm wide x 450mm deep or equivalent volume augured hole with a minimum diameter of 200mm. Please refer to the site layout diagram.

4. A trench between the hole for the rain gauge post and the data logger post holes needs to be dug. This is to protect the cable (which will also be in conduit). Please note the depth should be a minimum 200mm.

5. A trench between the hole for the centre mast post and the Data Logger Post holes needs to be dug. This is to protect the cables (which will also be in conduit). Please note the depth should be approximately 200mm.

6. If you have a grass temperature sensor, soil temperature sensor, or soil moisture sensor, please note the trench that needs to be dug between the data logger post and the site area reserved for these sensors.

7. Please note the 10m mast centre post, the rain gauge post and data logger post are all set into position with approx 2 x 20 kg concrete bags per post, often prior to mast installation. The centre post installation is covered in section 3.1. The orientation of these posts is important; Contact Environdata if you are unsure.

2.6 If your system includes a UHF link:

1. Site inspection is required to determine line of site, distance, & location of antenna mounting at the ‘office’ end.

2. If multiple systems are to be installed, please contact Environdata for advice on multiple antenna location.

3. Antenna cable distance between office antenna and the office UHF modem needs to be determined. If the cable needed is more than the standard 5m supplied then please contact Environdata.

4. Prior to the IS37 or Weather Station installation the antenna and cable need to be installed at the office.

2.7 If your system includes a Direct Cable link:

All cable runs need to be completed prior to installation. This includes trenching, conduit, and cable entry into buildings or structures.

2.8 If your system includes a Serial to Ethernet converter:

Your IT department needs to be consulted to assign a static IP address to the converter. This needs to be configured prior to installation. Environdata is happy to confer with your IT staff ahead of time to facilitate this process.

2.9 If your system includes WebGen:

Your IT department needs to be consulted to assign a dedicated PC for this software. This needs to have the correct Windows Operating System installed – currently Windows 7 Professional or Windows XP Professional – with administrative user rights, and be connected to the network, prior to the installation date. Environdata is happy to confer with your IT staff ahead of time to facilitate this process. Please refer to the current WebGen handbook for further information.

3.0 Installation

3.1 Install Foundation Post

Place the Foundation post in the correct orientation in the centre of the hole and fill with concrete.

Ensure the post is vertical and facing the correct direction as the concrete sets. The correct orientation is determined by facing the front of the post towards North. That is, the cable tie clips are on the north face of the post.

The post is set 400mm deep, it is important to leave the drainage hole at least 100mm above the concrete.

Ideally this will be done at least the day before the mast is to be raised.

3.2 Attach the Outer Post Pair

Once the Foundation post footing has set, mount the pair of outer posts, one on either side of the foundation post. It is important to include the four washers as spacers as this spreads the force of the bolt and nut, and prevents rubbing between the inner and outer posts.

Note that at this stage you should only insert the lower of the two large bolts through the Foundation post and outer posts, so the outer posts of the mast should at this stage be in a mostly horizontal orientation.

3.3 Attach the Hinge Pin and Lower Mast section

Next, mount the lower mast section in between the outer post pair with the M16 hinge Bolt. It is important to include the four washers as spacers as this spreads the force of the bolt and nut, and prevents rubbing between the inner and outer posts.

3.4 Position Middle and Upper Mast Section

Position the middle and upper mast sections in place as shown. These sections are designed to only go together one way. The nylon cable tie holders along one edge should all be on the same side as each other.

3.5 Bolt Mast Sections Together

Using the M10 x 35mm SS bolts, washers and Nyloc nuts supplied, bolt the mast sections together as shown. Bolt heads should always be on top of the join with the nuts below.

3.6 Mount Sensors on to Cross-arm

1. Feed the sensor cables through the cross-arm and out the centre exit on the bottom face of the cross arm before bolting the sensors in place. (A screw-driver or piece of wire is handy to ‘hook’ the cables out). NOTE: To avoid possible damage, it is safer to leave the wind speed cups and vane OFF at this stage.

2. Bolt the Wind Speed sensor to the two captive nuts at one end of the cross arm, the Wind Direction sensor to the other end.

3. If you are using one, locate the Solar Radiation sensor on the top of the cross arm in the circular cut out provided. Bolt through from underneath into the bottom of the sensor body.

4. If you are using a 10m Temperature sensor place this in the SS11 free standing sensor shelter and then connect the SS11 to the bottom of the cross arm, using the holes provided.

3.7 Attach Cross Arm

1. Raise the end of the mast onto a steady and secure support. New versions have a support ‘leg’ built in to the top section, which can be utilised at this stage.

2. Feed sensor cables into the end of the mast and out the exit 400mm down the top mast section.

3. Bolt the cross arm to the top mast section cross arm mounting plate, using the supplied SS M6 bolts into the captive nuts on the cross arm

3.8 Fit Conduit

4. Connect the 15m Sensor Extension cables (or your specified length) to the sensor cables after they exit the top mast section.

5. Connect the extension cables provided, using a quarter turn to lock the connectors together. Make a note of which sensor is connected to each extension cable.

6. From April 2013, the sensor connectors and the Extension cable connectors are all marked with the data logger channel number they correspond to, in order to facilitate matching the extension cable to the sensor. At the data logger end of the extension cable the cable is marked to indicate the channel number to connect the cable to.

7. Fit the Rigid sections of grey 32mm conduit to the mast sections. This conduit is fixed to the centre mast sections using the cable tie fixing brackets and cable ties supplied.

Position the first conduit section 200mm below the cable exit on the top mast section, with the flared end to the top.

Join the second piece by sliding the flared end over the bottom of the first piece. This should position the bottom of the second piece near the pivot point of the mast.

Affix the third section of rigid conduit to the left hand outer post, flared end up, via the cable tie mounts as above.

8. Run the 15m sensor extension cables through the conduit while the mast sections are still laid out horizontal.

9. Leave a loop of at least 150mm additional cable length at the pivot point of the mast – where the conduit switches from the centre post to the outer post. This allows the arm to swing without damaging the cables.

10.The flexible conduit is fitted after running the extension cables through the rigid conduit. The included cable insertion tool will facilitate this process.

11.The flexible conduit should use the re-useable cable ties supplied.

3.9 Fit Winch Cable

1. Fit the winch cable onto the Eye on the lower mast section using one of the 6m Stainless steel cables and D-shackle provided as shown below:

3.10 Fit Lower Guys to Mast

Seven guy ropes are provided in total; 3 of 10m and 4 of 6m in length. One of the 6m cables is used on the winch, the 10m guys are for the upper section, the 3 remaining 6m guys are for the lower section, fitted to the outer support posts.

These should be fitted to the outer support posts while they are laying horizontal.

The guy wires provided have one end with a pre-made loop. This end is attached using D-shackles to the Eye bolts pre-fitted to the outer support posts.

Two guys connect to the southern side, and a single guy connects to the northern side

DO NOT connect the guys to the footings at this stage. Do not cross the guys on the southern side over the path of the mast.

3.11 Raise Outer Pair & Bolt into Place

IMPORTANT: As you raise the outer mast support pair, you will need to support the cross arm end of the mast to ensure there is no physical damage to the sensors. The best way to do this is to have a person carry this end forward as the outer pair is raised.

Once the outer posts are vertical, they need to be locked into place on the foundation post with the M16 Stainless steel bolt, 2 washers on the outside and nut.

3.12 Fit Winch

1. Once the outer pair have been raised, the winch can be fitted as per diagram below.

2. Clamp the end of the winch cable to the side of the winch using the cable clamp as shown below

3. Make sure the winch is fitted to the opposite side of the cables/conduit; that is, the winch is fitted to the southern side.

3.13 Connect & Tighten Lower Guys

1. Using the supplied D-shackles, attach the turnbuckles for the lower guys to the eye-nut in each guy rope footing.

2. Undo the Turnbuckles to leave approximately 5mm of thread at each end.

3. For each guy rope; thread 2 of the supplied wire rope clamps onto the guy rope, and then feed the guy rope through the end of the Turnbuckle, and back through the wire rope clamps.

4. Pull the guy rope through until the slack is removed.

5. Clamp the first wire rope clamp down using the supplied M10 Nut Driver, around 40mm to 60mm from the end of the turnbuckle.

6. When you have all three guys in place, check and adjust the tensions incrementally until the slack is removed and the mast is vertical.

a. The guy ropes are tensioned by tightening the turnbuckle. Ensure both ends of the turnbuckle are tightened at the same time; this is best done by holding the turnbuckle ends stationary and rotating the body. A screwdriver or similar may be used to apply leverage where necessary.

b. Do not over tighten. The correct tension = 1.5 to 2 inches

deflection, with only moderate hand force at 1.5 metres up the guy wire.

c. Use a plumb bob or similar to confirm mast is vertical.

7. Once the lower guys are tightened, clamp the second wire rope clamp down using the supplied M10 Nut Driver, around 200mm from the first wire rope clamp. Cut the excess wire with the supplied wire cutters around 50mm above the second wire rope clamp.

8. Tighten the locking nuts onto the turnbuckle.

9. Use the winch to remove the slack in the winch cable, and act as a safety mechanism, to prevent sensor damage from the top of the mast hitting the ground. This should NOT be done until all 3 lower guys are tensioned.

3.14 Fit Sensor Cups & Vane, Set North & Test Sensors

1. Test each sensor and extension cable with a sensor test box (supplied with your system) to ensure that everything is fully operational.

2. Mount the wind speed cups and vane. The setting of the wind direction vane must be done with a sensor test box. See the system’s handbook for details. A compass or GPS is also necessary to find north if it is not already known. The total accuracy of the wind direction data relies on this setting so it must be done as accurately as possible!

3.15 Fit Upper Guy Wires to Mast

Seven guy wires are provided in total. The 3 x 10m guys are for the upper section.

These should be fitted to the upper guy attachment points on the upper mast section while the mast is in the lowered position.

The guy wires provided have one end with a pre-made loop. This end is attached using D-shackles to the Eye bolts pre-fitted to the upper mast section.

Two guys connect to the southern side, and a single guy connects to the northern side.

DO NOT connect the guys to the footings at this stage. Do not cross the guys over the path of the mast.

3.16 Winch Mast Vertical & Lock into Place

CAUTION: Do not connect the guys to the footings at this stage.

CAUTION: Do not raise the mast in windy conditions.

CAUTION: As the mast is winched into place utmost care must be given to ensure the upper guys do not catch, and have free unimpeded travel as the mast rises. The winch ratio allows easy raising of the mast, however a ‘snagged’ guy wire can cause damage to the mast without any feedback through the winch handle to the operator. Observe the Upper Guy Wires at ALL stages of mast winching to ensure free travel.

CAUTION: Watch the sensor cable loop at the hinge point to ensure no pinching occurs

Use the winch to raise the mast, observing the cautions listed above.

Once the mast is vertical, use the remaining M16 Stainless Bolt, 2 washers & Nut to lock the mast to the outer mast sections.

CAUTION: Once the mast is raised, it must have the guys connected. It cannot be left upright without all 3 guys attached and strained correctly or mast failure will result once windy conditions occur.

3.17 Connect & Strain Upper Guy Wires

1. Using the supplied D-shackles, attach the turnbuckles for the upper guys to the eye-nut in each guy rope footing, above the lower guy D-shackle.

2. Undo the Turnbuckles to leave approximately 5mm of thread at each end.

3. For each guy rope; thread 2 of the supplied wire rope clamps onto the guy rope, and then feed the guy rope through the end of the Turnbuckle, and back through the wire rope clamps.

4. Pull the guy rope through until the slack is removed.

5. Clamp the first wire rope clamp down using the supplied M10 Nut Driver, around 40mm to 60mm from the end of the turnbuckle.

6. When you have all three guys in place, check and adjust the tensions incrementally until the slack is removed and the mast is vertical.

a. The guy ropes are tensioned by tightening the turnbuckle. Ensure both ends of the turnbuckle are tightened at the same time; this is best done by holding the turnbuckle ends stationary and rotating the body. An adjustable spanner, screwdriver or similar may be used to apply leverage where necessary.

b. Use a plumb bob or similar to confirm mast is vertical.

c. As part of this process, you may need to loosen some guys as you achieve the correct tension balance.

d. Do not over tighten. The

correct tension is achieved when you can get 2.5 to 3 inches deflection, with only moderate hand force at 1.5 metres up the guy wire.

7. Once the upper guys are tightened, clamp the second wire rope clamp down using the supplied M10 Nut Driver, around 200mm from the first wire rope clamp. Cut the excess wire with the supplied wire cutters around 50mm above the second wire rope clamp.

8. Tighten the locking nuts onto the turnbuckle.

4.0 IS31 2 Metre Mounting Post for Logger Housing

4.1 Mount Standard 2m Housing Post

If not already done, dig a hole for the IS31 mounting post, and concrete it into position. Note that this post MUST face north as shown on the diagram, so that the solar panel faces NORTH (south in the northern hemisphere). The post should be positioned as per Appendix2 – Data Logger Section of diagram.

Make sure that this post will not get in the way of the IS37, or guys, when it is being raised or lowered.

5.0 Lowering Mast For Service

CAUTION: Do not lower the mast in windy conditions.

1. Ensure winch is attached

2. Loosen upper guy that is in the northern direction. This is the one that is opposite the direction of mast lowering. Do this by undoing the Turnbuckle locking nuts and loosening the turnbuckle so 5mm of thread is still visible at both ends. Once the guy rope is loose, remove the turnbuckle by undoing the turnbuckle to the guy rope attachment eye nut. Leave the turnbuckle attached to the guy rope.

3. Remove the M16 Bolt that secures the bottom of the lower mast section to the outer support posts. This bolt is approximately 300mm above the winch location.

4. Operate the winch to begin feeding out the winch cable. You may need to gently push the lower mast section to begin mast travel.

5. Gently lower the mast supporting the end of the mast with a steady and secure support. Some versions have a support ‘leg’ built in, which can be utilised at this stage. Keep the winch cable attached as a safety support.

6.0 Raising the Mast after Service

CAUTION: Do not connect the Upper Northern guy to the footing at this stage.

CAUTION: Do not raise the mast in windy conditions.

CAUTION: As the mast is winched into place utmost care must be given to ensure the upper guys do not catch, and have free unimpeded travel as the mast rises. The winch ratio allows easy raising of the mast, however a ‘snagged’ guy wire can cause damage to the mast without any feedback through the winch handle to the operator. All 3 upper guys may need to be checked and re-tensioned as required.
