    Three QuestionsThree Perspectives

    1. Why do so many children who are raised in

evangelical or fundamentalist homes lose their

    faith in college?

    2. Does modern science support or undermine

    belief in God?

    3. Can we harmonize discoveries of modernscience with Bible (especially Genesis 1-11)?

    History of the Big Bang

The term big bang was a derisive namegiven by opponents of the concept.

1929-1965: Evidence favored a big bangbut the steady-state hypothesis was favored

for philosophical reasons (i.e., it supportsatheism).

1965: The discovery of background radiationpersuaded most cosmologists to accept the

Big Bang theory. 1992: Hubble and COBE discoveries

provided overwhelming support for a bigbang.

For the scientist who has lived byhis faith in the power of reason, thestory (of the big bang) ends like a

2A. An Orderly Universe Is One

Described by Mathematics Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Newton all wroteadmiringly about our orderly, mathematicaluniverse.

They believed that God designed the universe, andit was to be expected that all phenomena of naturewould follow one master plan. The universe wasorderly and thus described by mathematicsbecause God fashioned it that way.

It is the orderliness in nature that makes it possibleto describe it with mathematics and not themathematics that makes it orderly!

There is no rational explanation for it. The

A common reaction among physicists to remarkable

discoveries of the sort discussed above is a mixture ofdelight at the subtlety and elegance of nature, and ofstupefaction: I would never have thought of doing it thatway. If nature is so clever it can exploit mechanismsthat amaze us with their ingenuity, is that not persuasiveevidence for the existence of intelligent design behindthe physical universe? If the worlds finest minds canunravel only with difficulty the deeper workings ofnature, how could it be supposed that those workings are

merely a mindless accident, a product of blind chance?

Astronomy leads us to a unique event, a universewhich was created out of nothing, and delicatelybalanced to provide exactly the conditionsrequired to support life. In the absence of anabsurdly-improbably accident, the observationsof modern science seem to suggest an underlying,

    one might say supernatural, plan.

Crick then triangulates to what must bethe case from biological necessity:

    DNA carries information,

The Enigma of the Origin of

LifeThe largest stumbling block in bridging the gapbetween nonliving and living still remains. All livingcells are controlled by information stored in DNA,which is transcribed in RNA and them made into

protein. This is a very complicated system, and eachof these three molecules requires the other two--eitherto put it together or to help it work. DNA, forexample, carries information but cannot put thatinformation to use, or even copy itself without the

help of RNA and protein.Kenneth R. Miller and Joseph Levine,Biology: The

Living Science (Upper Saddle River, New Jersey:Prentice Hall), 1998, p.406-407.

    What other say about the

origin of life? A profound difficulty exists, however, with the

idea of RNA, or any other replicator, at the start oflife. Existing replicators can serve as templates for

the synthesis of additional copies of themselves, but this device cannot be used for the preparationof the very first such molecule, which must arisespontaneously from an unorganized mixture. The

formation of an information-bearing homopolymerthrough undirected chemical synthesis appearsvery improbable.

    What others say about the

origin of life? The chemistry of the first life is a nightmare to

explain. No one has yet developed a plausibleexplanation to show how the earliest chemicals of

lifethought to be RNAmight have constructedthemselves from the inorganic chemicals likely tohave been around on early earth. The spontaneousassembly of a small RNA molecule on the

primitive earth would have been a near miracletwo experts in the subject (Joyce and Orgel)helpfully declared last year.

Biggest contention has to do with time of creation

and death before the fall, which YEC deny is

Biblical. Recent six-day creation makes no death in animal

    kingdom before the fall possible.

    Summary

Be careful to not be too dogmatic about things that

are uncertain (including my interpretation of

    scripture and science).

Be confident we will one day know exactly how

God did it and how long it took.

Be encouraged to see how much God reveals

himself with the fingerprints he has left in naturethat have become even more unmistakable signs

of His existence. Modern science overwhelmingly

supports belief in a creator God
